Chasing Waterfalls

JJ x Reader

Description: Emotions flow like the water in the waterfall.

Word Count: 1.9k (I’m slacking sry)

“BYE MOM I’LL BE HOME TOMORROW!” You scream as you run from the house.

John B’s was pretty close, and you were about to make today unforgettable. The crew had been down in the dumps thinking that there wasn’t anything new for them to do, it was just the same old same old, but you found something at work yesterday.

You work at the country club with JJ, you both applied together a few summers ago when it was becoming apparent that you needed money to go on all the adventures.

While bussing a table yesterday, the girls behind you were talking about this amazing hike that led to a waterfall that had water deep enough that you could jump off into it. You read the name from their tab and searched for her instagram, sure enough she was public and posted the pictures from the hike with a location tag.

Saving the location you texted the Pogues to meet at John B’s tomorrow with food, proper shoes and a bathing suit. You didn’t want to give too much away but they needed to be at least a little prepared for what you had planned.

Racing onto the property you see that you are the last one to arrive, the rest all sitting on the porch trying to figure out what you have planned.

“Are you all ready to have the best day of your life?” You questioned as you jumped onto the porch with them.

“C’mon (Y/n), just spill, what do you have planned?” Kie asks, excitement evident in her voice.

“So, I found this waterfall, well I actually heard about it at work yesterday, but then I found the location and we’re gonna spend the day there!” You explain, watching the smiles grow on everyone’s faces.

“It’s about an hour and a half drive, but I think it’ll be so worth it!” You finish, slightly jumping up and down.

Everyone smiled and nodded and started packing everything that would be needed for the trip.

“(Y/n),” JJ squeezed you into a tight hug and spun you in a circle, “you have saved us all from extreme boredom, so, you’ve been moved up in the rankings and have become my favorite person, John B you’re now in second.”

“HEY! I thought I was forever at first?!” John B yelled from the van.

“Well I haven’t heard you offering any fun ideas, but you do house me and drive me places, just be happy you're still towards the top.” JJ remarked and grabbed the last load of things to bring to the van, throwing a wink your way.

You met JJ and the rest of the group when you moved here a few years back, your mom ran a convenience store that kept you afloat for the most part, getting a job at the county club helped you guys have a little extra cash after the bills were paid.

You clicked with the group better than anyone thought possible, together you all formed a family and there was nothing that could wedge between you all.

The drive was full of awful karaoke and dances between all of you. The energy was unmatchable, everyone just letting go of the stresses of home.

Quicker than expected you all arrived and gathered the necessary belongings into backpacks before setting off on the small hike to where the waterfall was waiting.

It was a hot day and this seemed to be a popular spot to come so there were quite a few other people when you came over the final hill and laid eyes on the waterfall.

It was beautiful, the water fell perfectly and the water was a crystal blue, speckled with a few other people enjoying the cool water.

The group set up towels and the rest of the stuff in a sunny spot before heading for the ledge that people were jumping off. Kie wasted no time in running to the ledge and jumping off, letting out a yell of pure joy as her feet left the ground, she resurfaces with the biggest smile on her face, calling for the rest of you to follow.

John B, Sarah, and Pope followed, but you hesitated due to the nerves that came out of nowhere, JJ picked up on this.

“M’lady,” JJ held out a hand, offering a little extra confidence with it, that you took before both running to the end and jumping off, not letting go of him until you had to in order to swim back to the surface.

Everyone was swimming and throwing water on eachother, occasionally getting out to jump back in again moments later.

After a good amount of time it was decided to get out and take a little snack and rest break, so the group moved to the towels and relaxed in the warm sun.

Looking out to the water again you watch as a couple clung to each other as they floated around the water, just based on the way they looked at each other you could tell they were in love. Without thinking you opened your mouth.

“Ugh, I wish I had a boyfriend,” eyes slightly widening when it came out of your mouth, but you shrugged it off, everyone wished that… right?

“You know, (y/n), I don’t think I’ve ever even known you to date, have you?” Sarah moved her head up to look at you, as well as the rest of the group now.

“Nope, it’s hard to find someone who can handle me,” you smirked.

It was true, you hadn’t really dated before, sure you had crushes and had been in that weird talking stage before, but nothing ever became official.

You were a very strong willed girl, you knew what you wanted and how you wanted to be treated, and some people just seemed to be turned off or scared of that.

You also currently had a crush so deep that it didn’t really let you see anyone else as an option. As soon as you met JJ it was hard to ignore the butterflies that came every time he brushed your shoulder or smiled so big that it reached his eyes, just the small things.

“What do you even look for in a guy?” Kie propped her head up on her hands.

“Oh you know, real stuff, like the shape of his ass.” You smirked again and looked back at the group to see them all rolling their eyes and scoffing.

“Okay but really, what would it take to sweep you off your feet?” This time John B pushed.

Realizing you weren’t gonna be able to joke your way out of this you shrugged your shoulders.

“I mean, I don’t know. I want someone strong willed like myself, someone who really cares, would be willing to drop anything in order to help someone,” sighing you continue, “he needs to be a good listener, willing to pay attention to the little things. He needs to be able to make me laugh, that’s a big one. Oh! And someone who is giving, not like buying me things, I don’t need that, but someone who is willing to give me their time and is willing to work on things together.” You nodded your head and looked at them all, just staring back at you.

“You want someone the opposite of what your dad was.” JJ locked eyes with you and you felt your smile falter a bit.

“Yeah... yeah I guess.”

Your dad was awful to your mother, always told her that he could have done better, just rude and uncaring. When you were 12 your mother caught him cheating. She packed the two of you up and you left, she didn’t have a destination in mind, just drove until she ran out of land, literally. The two of you happened to stop at a gas station by the ferry and saw a listing for the small house that you two lived in now. She paid for a hotel for the week, got things in order to buy it, and set divorce papers to your father all in that week.

After that you two had started thriving in this new house, just you and her. Of course the divorce got messy, but he gave up custody of you without a fight, so after a year the divorce was final and you and your mother never spoke of him again.

“I learned from my mother what it means to be a strong woman, she taught me what it means to love someone, how to find the attributes of that love in someone else. She also taught me about where she went wrong, I know what traits can quickly turn toxic so when I see that in someone I keep my distance.” You are looking at the ground trying to hold back the tears.

Feeling an awkward silence you stood and plastered a fake smile on.

“I don’t know about y’all but I’ve had enough rest, I’m gonna go jump in again.” Nodding you turned and quickly walked to the other side of the water where the ledge was, where you were slightly hidden from the others.

Taking a deep breath you closed your eyes and just tried to forget about the memories that we’re trying to break through, this was supposed to be a fun day, so dammit you were gonna be happy.

“Hey, (y/n), are you okay?”

Your eyes shoot open to see JJ staring back into your own.

“Uh,” you plastered the smile back on, “yeah, yeah I’m fine!”

“Bullshit,” JJ pushes your hair behind your ear and then takes you into his arms, holding you in a tight embrace, “I’m sorry I brought up your dad, I know it’s a touchy subject, I wasn’t thinking, trust me of all people in our group I understand not wanting to talking about your dad, but you know I’m here for you no matter what.”

He felt a sob shake your body in his arms and held you closer, rubbing small circles on your back, then pulling away from you to wipe your tears.

“(Y/n), I’ll give you my time, my attention, shit, I’d give my life for you,” JJ looked down at his feet then met your eyes with his own, “I hate to see you in pain, let me make you happy, okay?” He smiled at you and you felt a smile grow in your own face, nodding as he wiped the rest of your tears from your cheeks.

He pressed a short kiss to your forehead and grabbed your hand as you two walked towards the original destination.

“You know, as far as the qualities you look for in a guy, I do have to say, I DO have the best ass around,” he looked at you, causing a short giggle.

“Eh I dunno, could use some work.” You tried to hide your smile as you passed him, your hand reaching out slapping his butt as you sprinted for the ledge, hoping he wouldn’t be able to catch you.

He caught up to you at the very end, grabbing your waist before you both launched off the cliff.

After landing in the water he kept his hold on you, you both just floated together, you head resting back on his shoulder.

Maybe he would be the first boy that passed your test, the one to finally break down your walls.

Only time would tell.

Make Me Yours

JJ x Reader

Description: First of my Prompt requests! Rules are rules, being a goodie two shoes you don’t want to be the one to break them.

Word Count: 2k

Closing your eyes, you relaxed feeling the wind blow through your hair as the Pogue made its way down the river.

You all had just spent the day on the boat, swimming, tanning, just enjoying the summer without a care in the world.

A shiver went down your body as a bit of the water splashed up and got you just the slightest bit wet, making the air a little more chill. Wrapping your arms around yourself you just decided to get over it and go back to relaxing.

Seconds later you felt the seat sink beside you, then a slight tap on your shoulder. Opening your eyes you see JJ holding out the hoodie he previously had on to you, the chill becoming a bit worse you accepted it with a smile.

“Whattcha thinkin about?” He smiled and asked as he laid back beside you, forcing you to be done relaxing and talk.

“Not much, just about what I might wear tonight,” you yawned, “and maybe taking a nap before, forgot how much swimming and the sun can take it out of me.” You giggled at the end.

“Shoot, I might just try to take one right now,” you yawned again and closed your eyes.

After a few minutes you were about to drift into a sleep when there came a series of pokes to your shoulder. Cracking an eye open you look up at JJ, a shit eating grin covering his face.

“Don’t test me JJ, I won't be much fun at the bonfire tonight if I’m tired.” You close your eyes once again and he huffs and pulls your hair out of its bun, starting to untangle the ends so he can run his fingers through it, something he often did when he was bored. The familiar and comfortable feeling of his hands brushing through it lulled you into a soft sleep, finally.

As the boat got back to the dock, everyone seemed to hit a second wave of energy and decided to split ways and meet back here in two hours to go to the boneyard together.

“Hey, do you girls want to get ready at my place?” Sarah looked at you and Kie and you could feel the smile grow on your own face as you watched the same happen on Kies.

“I was hoping you’d ask that,” Kie smiled as you all got into Sarah's car and made your way to figure eight.

Getting ready with the girls was always an experience. Between the clothes that got thrown around and the crazy dances you would all make up to the obnoxiously loud music that played, it was easily better than going to the parties themself.

Not having any other clothes that what you wore on the boat today you asked Sarah if you could borrow something, and you swore you saw her eyes sparkle.

“(Y/n), you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for you to ask that question.” She spoke before she went to work digging in her closet, trying to find the perfect look.

“I hope you don’t mind, but I’m gonna make you look a little Kookish,” she giggled as she looked between two shirts, then tossing them both to the side as she went back to the closet.

“Oh my gosh, JJ will give me so much shit,” you laughed, “but I mean it would be nice to wear something more stylish than my jean shorts that I bought two years ago.” You shook your head, letting your mind wander, what would JJ think of this new look?

“What’s going on between you two anyways?” Kie asks, laying on the bed throwing grapes into the air and catching them in her mouth.

“What do you mean?” you felt a slight blush raise to your cheeks and you turned your head hoping that Kie wouldn’t pick up on it.

“Oh please, don’t lie to yourself, you know you like each other.” Sarah muttered from the closet again.

“Aren’t you literally wearing his hoodie right now?” Kie points her finger to the hoodie you still have on.

“I don’t know guys, we’ve known each other for so long, plus you know the rule, Kie you’re the one who made it.” sending a pointed look her way you raised your eyebrows and she scoffed.

“That rule is some bullshit and you know it.”

“We got close one time, we were both drunk and happened to end up really close, I think he was about to kiss me, but all of the sudden he pulled away and mumbled something about the ‘rule’, so I’d say it stuck.” You said only loud enough that Kie barely caught it.

Before she had a chance to respond Sarah was running out of her closet.

“Okay not to change the subject but I found it, I found the perfect outfit for you!” Sarah squealed and put a romper into your arms.

“Oh, no Sarah I can’t, this is so nice.” You look at Sarah.

You had grown up a true Pogue, you still just scrape by money wise, always leaving you at a loss when it came to keeping up with the styles, usually getting hand me downs from Kie when she got new things, you were thankful but always felt less the others even though you know none of them thought of you that way.

“Oh please, just wear it! It will look so good on you! It’s nice but still casual enough to wear your converse with!” She just smiles and pushes you into the bathroom to change.

Both Kie and Sarah can’t wipe the smiles off their faces when you come back out, rushing to put your hair down and adding a few braids, then forcing you to apply the smallest amount of mascara and lipgloss. By the end of it all you looked like a real Kook, but still uniquely pogue.

Sarah snapped a quick pic of the three of you in the mirror and then you were all back off to John B’s place to meet the boys.

Pulling into the driveway you all hop out and walk up to the house to see if the boys are ready.

“Oh shoot, y’all go ahead I forgot my phone in the car, I’ll be right in!” You called as you ran back to the car, grabbing your phone and then running to the house.

You walked in the house and everyone was doing their own thing, Pope was the first to notice you, and that started a chain reaction from the boys.

“Woah, (y/n).” His eyes got big and you could hear the shock in his voice.

John B was next, and you watched as his jaw just dropped.

JJ’s back was turned and when he saw the way they were staring he turned confused, soon joining the others.

“Doesn’t she look great?” Kie swung an arm around you, being able to tell that you were getting flustered.

“I didn’t bring a change of clothes so Sarah lent me this,” you looked at your toes and back up at the guys, “is it too Kook-ish?”

“No!” JJ exclaimed, then coughed a bit, “uh, yeah no not too Kook, you look really good, but sorry to say you can’t look better than all this.” He motioned to himself and you and everyone laughed.

Everyone getting into John’s van, JJ sliding into the seat next to you, casually dropping his arm around your shoulders, Kie giving you a look, feeling a slight blush rise to your cheeks you let your head drop naturally onto him.

You really didn’t know what this was, but you liked it.

Arriving at the boneyard you help set up the keg and table for drinks. When people started showing up you helped JJ start the bonfire, the two of you finding your friends after, everyone having a good time.

A few drinks later the girls dragged you away towards the other people dancing, throwing judgment to the wind you all three danced to your heart's content, not caring who was watching or what anyone thought.

The boys joined after a song, wanting to join in on all the fun you girls were having. You looked to see John B and Pope dancing with you all, but were a little confused to not see JJ dancing with them.

Looking around you finally found him leaning against a tree flirting with some tourist girl, a slight pang in your chest. You swallowed and shook your head, he wasn’t yours, you have no right to feel this way.

Plastering a smile back on you tell Kie that you’re going to get another drink, seeing the hurt in your eyes she just nodded, not knowing what was wrong but didn’t want to question it.

Walking to the drink table you filled a cap and took a sip, looking back at your friends dancing like idiots, managing to bring a real smile to your face.

“Um, excuse me,” a boy lightly tapped your shoulder, “um, Hi I’m Cole.” The boy smiled and put a hand out for you to shake.

He was cute, had a nice build, all in all he was a catch. Deciding to see where this could go you stuck your hand out and shook it.

“(Y/n), nice to meet you.” You smiled back.

He was opening his mouth to say something else but stopped when a hand slid around your waist, looking up you see JJ.

“Hey pretty girl,” he smiled and looked down at you.

Before answering you looked back to the boy, only to see him a distance away walking the other direction.

“JJ what the hell?” You looked at him with a bit of annoyance in your tone.

“What? I just wanted to come say hello, who was that anyways? Looked like a weirdo,” JJ snatched your drink out of your hands and finished it off.

Anger and confusion built in your chest, not knowing what else to do or say you just shook your head and wiggled out of his grasp, getting a bit away from the crowds, but still able to be seen by your groups of friends.

“Hey,” JJ caught up to you and lightly grabbed your wrist, “what's wrong? Did I do something?”

“No, I’m fine.” You look away and feel him turn your head back to him.

“Okay, I can be dense sometimes but I know better than to believe that.” JJ had concern written all over his face.

“It’s dumb JJ, I dont wanna talk about it,” You mumbled.

“C’mon, we’ve gone through too much for me to lose you now,” JJ responded, and you finally let go.

“You don’t want to lose me or see me with some other guy but what am I supposed to do if I can’t call you mine?” You let out a breath and looked to the ground.

“JJ, I have cared for you too long to hide this anymore, I know the rule but I can’t go around acting like it doesn’t kill me to see you flirting with other girls when all I want is for you to be with me.” You felt small tears build at the corners of your eyes.

“Then do it,” JJ finally spoke, “Go ahead baby, make me yours.”

You looked up at him with confusion written all over your face. He took a step closer and placed a hand on your cheek.

“B-but the r-,” you started.

“Fuck the rules,” he whispered as his lips tugged into a smile and he started to lean in, you wasted no time meeting his lips with your own.

The kiss was explosive, all the passion that you two have felt for each other over the years finally put out in the open.

You two only broke apart when you heard cheers back from the party, looking to see that your group of friends were cheering you on.

“I SO FUCKING TOLD YOU!” Kie screamed and you just smiled and rested your head on JJ’s chest.
