Song Review: Various Artists - “The Weight” (“Whiskey Sour Happy Hour“ Finale)
All-star super-jams often collapse in cacophony or worse. But the one that wrapped Ed Helms’ “Whiskey Sour Happy Hour” quarantine series went in the opposite direction - smooth, melodious sailing all the way through.
Maybe that’s because this band featured, among others, Jerry Douglas, Sean Watkins, Sierra Hull, Madison Cunningham, Molly Tuttle, a couple of Punch Brothers and all of I'm With Her.
Or maybe it’s because they picked the ideal tune - “The Weight” - for swapping vocals and solos.
And it’s definitely because these are world-class musicians who never over-sang their lines or over-played their instruments. And yet they managed to give vocal time to many of the singers and solos to most of the players without any hint of overcrowding as Dobro, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar filled the spaces between verses.
And the harmonious choruses are a delight.
Anyone expecting a train wreck will be pleasantly surprised. Anyone hoping for perfection will be, too.
Such things typically don’t work out so well.
Grade card: “The Weight” (“Whiskey Sour Happy Hour” Finale) - A+

Exploring rural forests
- Bring a flashlight. Bring an extra battery. Bring anothter battery. Bring your headphones. Do not bring a camera.
- Set out after rain. It cleans the air.
- If a tree falls in your peripheral, it's a warning. Be careful, you only get one.
- If a tree falls right in front of you, something is out to kill you, and something wants to project you.
- Those hooves you hear? Don't go looking, it's not a deer.
- You might get the urge to take your shoes off. Allow yourself to give in, if you are feeling reckless. However, no matter how familiar the ground seems, don't let it touch your ankles. Make sure you remember your name. Not all trees are born from seeds.
- The man with the dog does have eyes. He just shares them.
- If you come across a field with cows, check the height of the grass. Does it grow above your knees? Make haste. Do not dwell on the question what the cows have eaten instead.
- You might hear your own steps echoed in the bushes. Looking will not help you. There is nothing there to see.
- It's not thunder, it's moaning. You are lucky their pain is keeping them occupied.
- If you visit the abandoned house, don't close the door behind you.
- You can rest on a fallen trunk, but do not eat. You can lay your bag on a picknick bench, but remain standing.
- The carved sigs are not meant for you.
- Horses do nog step in puddles for they fear they will break a leg. Horses do not step in puddles for they fear they will be dragged under.
- The shadow is not that big, it's just closer than you think.
- The rolling fields look wonderful. Don't stay for the sunset.

The comradery in this fandom is at its strongest when the North Carolina Courage play. Everyone wants them to lose, no matter who they’re playing. Amazing. We unite against The Evil. It’s quite beautiful really!

The plum tree breaks out in bees. A gull is locked like a ghost in the blue attic of heaven. The wind goes nattering on, Gossipy, ill at ease, in the damp room it will air. I count off the grace and stays My life has come to, and know I want less –
Divested of everything, A downfall of light in the pine woods, motes in the rush, Gold leaf through the undergrowth, and come back As another name, water Pooled in the black leaves and holding me there, to be Released as a glint, as a flash, as a spark…
-Charles Wright, “April”

Song Review: I’m With Her - “Call My Name” (Acoustic)
I’m With Her remade “Call My Name” in the band’s own image and thus revealed the song’s inner beauty.
Released as a single produced by Mike Elizondo earlier this year, the acoustic version of non-album track now features just Aoife O’Donovan’s guitar, Sara Watkins’ violin, Sarah Jarosz’s mandolin and their voices.
In this new guise, the song blossoms, as the lyrics and vocals take a more prominent role and “Call My Name” finally sounds like an I’m With Her number.
Bead of sweat runnin’ down my neck/I can wipe it away, but I feel it yet/pulled the covers up tight/and I didn’t hear you cryin’ when you called my name
Freed from the percussion and ethereal production that cluttered the original, this less-is-more approach is a reminder that I’m With Her are at their best when left to their own devices, instruments and harmonies.
Grade card: I’m With Her - “Call My Name” (Acoustic) - A+
