Why do I think Levi is talking about Petra
Recently, I’ve been binging into every bit of Rivetra content that I could find, and let me tell you, I am pretty much convinced Levi was talking about her at this moment. That being said, this doesn’t automatically make the ship canon, but it adds layers to their relationship, and Petra’s significance.
A lot of you have gathered evidence proving Petra’s feelings towards Levi. I think that at this point, it can be considered canon that she felt something for him. We have the official arts, some panels of Spoof of Titan, Petra’s song, and a smart pass confirming her crush (just to put some examples, but there are more). I’m not going to dwell into that any further, because I think it’s pretty confirmed already.
What I really want to deal with is a debated but less settled question, which is related to the letter that Petra wrote to her father. We know that after she died, Mr. Ral approached Levi, concerned about his daughter’s “devotion”, and brought up the subject that she was too early to be married. This made many people think that they were engaged, but what I think is that Petra’s father realized his daughter’s feelings, and wanted to discuss it with the captain. What’s more, I think Levi realized at that moment that Petra had feelings for him, hence his horrified expression. The attention paid to Petra’s death was underpinned in three different scenes, so her impact on Levi shouldn’t be discussed either.
Now why do I think I’m right? Isayama has participated in the development of Shingeki’s games, supervising the extra scenes that complement the story. Although some of these may come to contradict the canon, they are used rather to develop or give more depth about their characters.
In this conversation between Petra and Levi, she brings up the subject of the letter that she has written to her father, although she feels suddenly embarrassed of its content. It seems that, despite speaking professionally, Petra had put something else in her words, something that her father noticed later. If, on the other hand, we consider this scene as a complement to the canon, Levi knew that something about her letter embarrassed her, and added to her father’s comment, surely he tied the dots right away. So yes, we can pretty much say that her letter did imply some kind of feelings towards him, and I think Levi realized that after she died.
Petra’s memory does not disappear, and we continue to see her alongside Levi in his memoirs on more than one occasion. During his talk with Zeke, they meet in the forest of giant trees, the place where her comrades died, and where he remembers Petra again. During this chapter, Zeke also questions his popularity with women, to which he replies that “there was a time when he was/ He had been popular enough” (it varies with the translation). Which is weird, he could have told him to “shut up”, but he answered. Maybe because the guilt and her memories were really vivid at the moment?
Isayama is very careful with the details of his work, and all the elements that surround the scene make reference to Petra, who also appears centrally in the panel. This can’t be a coincidence, plus, as I said, Levi surely knew about her feelings.
But now is when the next scene comes in. In this conversation from another game, a scene occurs that curiously involves Levi, Zeke, and Petra. It can be understood as something comical, but the relationship of characters is not overlooked. During this scene, it is implied that Levi gets jealous because Petra has agreed to have a drink with Zeke, or at least that is what he thinks, going so far as to tell Petra that he may have found "a chink in humanity’s strongest soldier’s armor ”.
This game came out during the third season, so the manga was covering this arc. I think that, considering the number of hidden references Isayama puts in other materials related to his work, this can be read as a brief reference that Petra was also present in Levi’s mind during his canonical conversation with Zeke. After all, they both have to do with Zeke’s interest in Levi’s love life.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!
