Okay I double checked because the "40,000 years ago" figure is SO bonkers that I was like "...did I misremember and it was 4,000 years ago?" And apparently 45,000 years ago is ACTUALLY when Arion did a bunch of stuff. (Not being born, though. He was born 527,654 years ago. And was still a teenager 300,000 years later, somehow. I hate comics.)

ANYWAY, Atlantis sank into the sea around 9,600 BCE. Which still predates all forms of paper, but they also had fucking LASER CANNONS so who the fuck knows.

Here is a bound book in 9,600 BCE. I'm so sorry. (They are not underwater yet, that comes after the laser cannons.)

Now I'm sidetracked about how Atlanteans would have paper... like you can't make paper underwater and I can't think of any equivalent methods that would work in the ocean. Maybe a water-curing resin? Paper gets part of its strength from how cellulose shrinks and sort of links together as it dries so a natural plasticizer would seem like an equivalent... maybe they could just hack off pieces of fallen wood and polish it, but that takes wayyyy more skill and effort and time compared to paper making. Hm. Maybe they could mine volcanic stone? Maybe they just import cotton paper from the surface (thick cotton paper doesn't fall apart when it's wet like wood-based paper. At least not as easily). Maybe they draw on rocks with silverpoint. HMMMM. @pluckyredhead @aqua-dan do they address this in the comics?

I'm thinking so hard about this because drawn porn, at least, would need paper. Written porn in theory does not need paper, though it's wild to imagine people dictating their erotica to surface transcribers. Like do you think there's a specific job for that or do you have to podfic your porn yourself if you're a writer? Do most Atlanteans even know how to use their vocal chords to talk? All of their communication is telepathic.

Re: paper: in The Atlantis Chronicles they use magic to write with ink on paper regular-style, which is so boring. But that was 40,000 years ago (dear Peter David: no it wasn't) so maybe they write on special fish or something now.

According to Rebirth, deeper Atlantis is basically the ghetto and people are fishier there (i.e. Dolphin has scales and bioluminescence).

The rest isn't addressed in canon so I think everything else in this post can be Confirmed Accurate.

btw if you're annoyed with Google search giving you results for stuff that's similar to but not actually what you typed in, go to search tools, go to where it says "all results" and change that to "verbatim" and then it will search for what you actually asked for

why this is not the default is beyond me other than obvs enshittification but it has rescued a bunch of searches for me lately where the top results were completely unhelpful until i switched to that so. might be helpful for others
