U.S. conservatives always talk about creating jobs but get SO MAD whenever anyone mentions banning prison labor like imagine the insane ammout of jobs that would be created literally overnight if companies in your country had to actually employ people instead of using slave labor from people that got caught with weed 10 years ago.

#california & louisiana and their surrounding handful of states are notoriously horrendous for this #sending literal children as in juvenile offenders out to fight massive forest fires that kill hundreds and charging them for their jail time #so they are ''paid'' pennies & still rendered unemployable upon release #angola prison is fucking heart chilling #wish somebody would bring up the jobs thing and say oh but y'all not about that life huh! when other repubs demur #it is hard because like ''banishment'' is not a thing anymore & truly sometimes the best harm mitigation is to put an offender AWAY #from their ability to do harm #even if it's not like execution worthy or anything #like I'm not saying prison abolition is going to fix things and I'm not saying I have a different solution for it! #I am saying the fact that prison labor being sold to the highest bidder in private industry is a fucking slave auction though #and by extension one cannot be a slavery abolitionist without demanding an overhaul of the bloodthirsty corruption of prison labor #including & especially the school to prison pipeline + racial profiling and all other facets of the prison industrial complex

Re-reblogging to incorporate this tag from @rigil-kentauris because this is ABSOLUTELY also a factor; the policing of bodies and especially the treatment of bodies as public property subject to criticism or condemnation by popular consensus or literal governing by institutional interference can never be separated from race in the culture & this country.

Whose bodies are allowed to exist as is? Whose are allowed to be modified? For whom are these medical interferences forced upon them, either overtly... by circumstance à la food deserts, which types of care are accessible, etc.... or as a path to "success" & survival, ie if your only way "out" of poverty, redlining, etc., is marrying well, assimilating in appearance to class pass into a different job, the intense self modification of athletics?

Whose bodies are demanded to be on display as public property? Whose are forced to be covered? Whose bodies and which procedures are taboo to discuss, and how much does it play into perpetuating the myth of Calvinist meritocracy, that you are good and beautiful if you are deserving, that you just coincidentally wanted to look like that, have that "glow up" to win, that the bar for you to overcome and survive has not been placed so high that it is unattainable without changing yourself, and that by extension, winning at the unspoken game means you are beholden to protect & enshrine it, and maintain that your wins were "natural," ordained by the golden god of vanity?

What does it mean to reject the game and not play by its rules and still thrive? What does that do to those within the system, and what response does it evoke from them when you've decided they are not in control?

Not to equate trans identity and struggle to racial identity and struggle, but the roles they have occupied do overlap, and do echo. Who does it serve to police whose bodies, and who is doing the policing? And to what end if not profit, power, control, all of the above? What is the goal behind convincing you your body is not your own to do with exactly as you choose? What is the uniform you don when you treat your body as free, and your neighbor's as carceral property subject to control by the state, for no reason other than the audacity of not being yours?
