rbb01: anniversary
Callum brings Rayla flowers one day. It's nothing too fancy— just a bouquet of moon lillies from the castle gardens, tied together by the stems with white lace and brown twine. He's sweet on a normal day, and Rayla supposes she shouldn't be so surprised, but it still catches her off guard. So off guard, in fact, that she realises far too late that she's not even sure what they're for.
"It's our anniversary," he tells her brightly. "Today last year, you kissed me for the first time. That's definitely something worth celebrating."
Rayla lets out a laugh, and something like a blush crosses her face. "A whole year already, huh?" she says, accepting the bouquet with a flattered smile. "That went faster than I thought it would. I can't believe it's been—" She catches herself. Then she pauses. "Hang on. Did you say since I kissed you?"
"Yep," says Callum with a grin. It's mostly genuine, but she knows him well enough to now to catch the glint of mischief in his eyes. "One whole year since that day in the desert. You were saying some not-so-nice stuff about yourself. I got mad that you thought those things. I told you you were amazing and you kissed me. Remember?"
Remember? Or course she remembers. How could she forget?
"That's not what I expected."
"You were saying all those things, so I thought..."
"No, I wasn't saying those so you would..."
She groans at the memory. They'd spent the rest of the night pointedly not talking about it, and to this day, it still feels like it was the most awkward night of her life. She hides her face in the lillies. "Today's not our anniversary."
Callum's grin turns into a smirk. She can feel it without even looking up. "Yeah, it is," he says happily. "It was our first kiss."
"No, it wasn't." Rayla winces, her blush growing ever more red at the thought. It's fine now, of course— now that they're together and they know they love each other— but back then? She'd been upset. She'd been lonely. He wasn't ready for it, and neither was she, but she'd acted impulsively anyway, and he'd rejected her, not on purpose, but still—
"It doesn't count," she snaps. "That wasn't— I didn't—"
Callim's smirk only grows wider. "Are you still embarrassed by how it happened?"
"No." Rayla scowls at him. "It shouldn't count. It was a mess. Our real first kiss was the one on the ambler. You know. Because we meant it."
"Are you saying you didn't mean the one in the Oasis?"
"I did but— ugh." Rayla covers her face with her hand. He's doing this on purpose. She can hear how entertained he is in his voice. "It doesn't count. You made me think you didn't like-like me and it was a mess and stupid and awkward—"
"But it was still our first," says Callum with a cheeky smile. He sobers and pries her hand away from her face to press a kiss into her fingers. "For real, though. If you hadn't kissed me then, I would have pined over you until you did. We might not have kissed properly at all, if things had happened differently. And as messy as it was, I'm glad it was our first. It was what led to all this." When he kisses her hand this time, he does so without mischief, and his lips leave ghosts of themselves against her skin.
Rayla's blush deepens just that little bit more under the tenderness of his touch, but she doesn't pull away. She sighs instead, breathing in the scent of the lillies to steady herself, and tangles her fingers with his. "I guess," she concedes quietly.
Callum rolls his eyes at her. "Will it help if I tell you I've got dinner planned for tomorrow night to celebrate our real anniversary?"
Rayla lets out a laugh. "Yes," she chuckles, "but... happy anniversary, Callum."
Callum grins. Happy anniversary, indeed.
