how to argue against anti-gun control supporters
Anti-gun control supporters generally use the following reasons to support their views. Here’s how to refute them:
1. “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”
The thing about this idea is that to a certain extent, it’s true: guns don’t do anything without someone pulling the trigger. However, that doesn’t take away the fact that a gun is a dangerous tool that aids people who want to kill people. Guns help them kill more people faster. If gun control was more strictly enforced, people with malicious intent would have a harder time accessing such a powerful tool, thereby decreasing the likelihood of mass murders. Not convinced? Look at Australia: April 28th, 2016 marked the 20 year anniversary of the last mass shooting that had occurred in 1996. After that shooting had killed 35 people, the Australian government promptly confiscated millions of guns and passed gun control laws. They have not had a single mass shooting ever since. Not one. (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-australia-guns-idUSKCN0XP0HG)
2. “I need a gun because I need to protect myself and my family.”
Those who use this argument are likely overestimating their abilities to react within seconds and use their guns in a way that would result in less harm done than if there were no guns at all in the first place. Besides, this has nothing to do with passing and enforcing stricter gun control laws. As of now, our background checks for guns are so weak that a 13-year-old can much more easily buy a gun than porn or lottery tickets (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJsmKQBx0eo). Furthermore, statistics show that the deaths by gun homicide and unintentional shooting far outweigh the “protection” that guns bring to civilians (#7 and #9 in https://www.thetrace.org/2015/12/gun-violence-stats-2015/).
3. “This is supposed to be a free country. I should have the right to bear arms.”
Honestly, this is such an entitled and selfish view to have. Of course we want to make our country as free and as open as we can!!! Do you really think so many people are advocating for more gun control just so they can strip you of your freedom?!?! The truth is, at this point in time, our gun control policy is just not working!!! At all!!! There have been too many mass shootings, homicides, and accidental shootings that could have easily been mitigated or prevented if we had more gun control. At the end of the day, it’s a simple trade-off: your so-called “freedom” of owning a gun versus thousands of deaths by gun per year (nearly 13,000 in 2015 – #1 in https://www.thetrace.org/2015/12/gun-violence-stats-2015/). Your fucking call.
4. “The right to bear arms is the 2nd Amendment!! We can’t go against the word of our Founding Fathers!!!”
Ok, but the founding fathers also possessed slaves and were sexist af. They were a couple of old white men who had idealistic views that were beneficial (in some ways) for the nation at that time - they were no where near perfect. Moving on.
5. “If civilians don’t carry arms, the government may turn on us at any time.”
First of all, the U.S. government will not suddenly turn on us just because we no longer have guns. Besides, even if every single person in the United States owned a gun, we wouldn’t be powerful enough to overthrow the government if we wanted to. The government spends billions on weapons each year. They have nuclear bombs and some powerful ass shit that they don’t even reveal to the public. This is not a valid argument.
We can have our nation be a fucking bloodbath where three-year olds are taught to practice hiding in bathrooms from potential shooters, or we can try to change our gun policy. Banning guns would be smart, but if the majority can’t get on board with that, stricter background checks is a good and necessary place to start.
