Minami Anonx7 If it helps Literally everyone I have known ever has brought up that I sound like a literal cartoon mobster henchman every time I call people boss so i've just embraced it now fully. Everyone is Boss To Me as I sling my guns goofily to Get Da Coppers. But I SEE…. i've been playing through the yakuza games chronologically I’m currently watching through y4 right now but id like to watch dead souls afterwards. It is extremely funny though the idea of watching them completely ramshackled out of order. Anyways. 1) I personally would love to play the minami centric side game also + I literally cannot imagine it’s anymore embarrassing a thing to want then me daydreamng abt the side game id like to make for my yakuza OC and 2) SOOOOOOO true I love it when Nishida and Minami are like sort of a awful duo together also I admire your like notes about M construction. I haven’t given it much thought yet on how it actually works but that’s mostly bc I have family who work in construction so I make myself laugh thinking Majima has no idea what the hell he’s doing LOL but anyways real…… Idk if you've ever read it but there’s an awesome fic on ao3 where it’s basically about how Nishida was also a prisoner of the hole and this like sort of implied idea or like at least smth I saw someone bring up before in conjunction idea that “Whilst Minami tries to emulate Majima Nishida actually IS like Majima in a way and the result of that has made him jaded/heavily desensitised” which i think adds a really interesting layer to the Relationship to think abt ep if it were canon. So this is why Desperately desperately I need a M construction side game I need something to focus on the majima family outside of him and honestly especially on Nishida…… tangent but there is so much interesting potential w him I want to see it explored !!!!!! Last note here but have u seen Minami's scene in RGG online before? I just found an English translation of it today and it had me very biting and chewing over A) Minami getting legitimately upset when his fake accent was mocked, not bc it was a slight against HIM but against MAJIMA and B) the sort of self deprecating mention he makes of what good is he if he’s not strong enough / good at smth before it immediately gets pushed aside by him and C) the implication that Minami is genuinely attached to Kamurocho/wants to protect it. If u havent i can try and find the post I saw abt it but. Much to think about

its so funny how hes so close to having any kind of depth and then he brushes it off immediately like "yeah this whole clan fuckup bothers me n has got me feelin insecure .lol lmao anyways". like as much as its kind of annoying as a fan of the character its also unfortunately realistic? EYE do that. you wouldnt catch me dead elaborating and having a nice rock-talk if my life was in the midst of being tableflipped. lol + lmao + anyways is the best you're gonna get

also, as a bonus tidbit before i go figure out how to format this idea for a tumblin post, this is half the setup for the Saejima teacher idea i was playing with ☝ because i already know RGG is NEVER going to put any meaningful spotlight on the Family members who've been essentially left to pick up their bootstraps with the big whoopsie of y7. sorry that i keep talking about it in code i dont wanna spoil nobody, in spite of not caring abt them myself i know others do 🙇‍♂️ i'm taking matters into my own hands and i am going to explore the IMPLICATIONS of the BIGGEST FAMILY POSSIBLY EVER going thru what it does. and i'm going to grab Minami by his non-existent shirt collar and i'm going to shake him around until he talks about how this affects him at least a little bit. i'll stop coding this in the Saejima Teacher plot post so you can decide if it matters 2 you or not and read up when i get to it btws

also your point about Nishida is spot on. you don't keep the kind of man who trembles at every conversation he has for that many years without breaking him down and making him (comparatively) jaded in such a stressful line of work. on top of that, Majima literally tests this man like its some sort of divine Greek-mythos punishment put unto him by the gods..... he's absolutely jaded underneath that shaky deadpan stare. Nishida may never outwardly resemble Majima, persona or the genuine self, but he absolutely rubs off on him and influences him heavily. this is the kinda relationship most Gokudo in the series seem to have with their bosses when they're worth a damn, Saejima was ready to walk to the ends of the earth for his patriarch due to the positive impact he had on him, and Majima likewise for his boss, though moreso in the opposite direction. not wholly..... Majima's priority of strength begets some kind of twisted respect towards Shimano. I wonder if he lacks that respect for Sagawa, who as far as I remember never physically overpowers or threatens Majima except for when he's already down and weakened in some form.......? getting off track. point is Oyajis are very very influential to their precious boys, their Family will reflect them (personality, how he runs the joint, etc) regardless if they want it to or not. Majimemegoro has some baller fics exploring all this and it's a large part of what influences me today.....

Speaking of, i would love the title of that fic you've mentioned... i'm a little picky of which fanfic i'll give the time of day but Nishida also having experience with Anagura is tantalising. like that's so tragic.... that's so evil...... i'm sitting here wondering to myself if he was a survivor or.. yknow........ because no one else, in canon, "made it out" of Anagura alive. or, more specifically, no victims make it out of Anagura. Majima was always the exception. either option makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it...... cause if he is another victim then the way Majima treats him is just.... and if he's not then is his constant dedication to him like a form of atonement....... oouuhhhrggg......... im going to hit the wall...........

also! i'd love to hear if you have any unique takes regarding M.Con considering your family...... when i say im pulling ideas out of my ass i mean it. you've got access to a unique perspective methinks. closest i got is other people's accounts and (shudders) ausgov roadworkers i see occasionally............

also also! when you get to dead souls please bitch to me the moment something goes awry i HATE-love dead souls.... the characterisation makes me stub my toe repeatedly in frustration. its not bad and i dont want to be the NO FUN ALLOWED twat but ugghghhghghrghrhgrhg the zombie setting is not handled in a way that engages me. thats all i'll say bc otherwise ill be here forever venting all my nitpicks that i SHOULD throw on twitter but wont bc i got hardcore DS dickrider mutuals who'll get sad in my mentions at best and maybe take it personally at worst

"Lucy Grandchester, yeah that one.”

“Fourty-five unless you are getting nitpicky about cryostasis. That doesn’t count unless I am joking with a ghoul, honestly.”

What do you look like?

He lets out a small half chuckle, "Oh, we are doing this okay. I’ll bite. Slightly short middle aged punk, long greying curly hair, undercut, with one leg and too many tattoos?”

Where are you from? Where do you live now?

Lucy uncomfortably takes down his hair and redoes his messy bun while sighing and becoming a bit short. “I’m from just the other side of that irradiated water near that gas station south of here. Name kinda gives it away. You have seen it? I honestly am not sure how it’s standing still between the bombs and everything else. It’s looked after now, and is a surprise asset to still have. I lived in Boston for a while after all that, and back in this area once Nuka World was opened, then back in the Boston area, and would you look at that I am back in Nuka World and it is a lot more comfortable now.”

What was your childhood like?

"...Unstable, for everyone. It got a bit better once my parents were dead... are we done with this line of questions? Or am I excusing you?”

What groups are you friendly with? Are you allied with any factions?

“Well, I started out trying to play nicely vaguely with anyone that didn’t try to shoot me first. That.... hasn’t stayed how it is. At least not fully, though i generally play nice until I am given a reason not to. I am friendly with the Disciples, the Operators, several of the Children of Atom groups that haven't irradiated their sense out of their heads yet, the Railroad.”

Tell me about your best friend.

He finally visibly relaxes the rest of the way after that history business, and takes a drink of a quantum. “Oh only one best friend? Are we in high school again? aw Alright. We have some parallel histories.” He swirls the glowing drink, but doesn't let himself get lost in his head too far. “Great humor, puts up with my shit somehow, doesn't blow my sneaking. Laugh that could take on the world even though they probably wouldn't. No I am not spoiling who I decided on. A man has to have some secrets somewhere and mine are in short supply”

Do you have a family? Tell me about them!

“My son Shaun never ceases to surprise me with what he can come up with, and how well adjusted he is. Codsworth is still helping out with the household, and helping keep Shaun from disassembling live turrets while I am away, though now he is living here at Fizztop with us. Surprisingly it seems to be an alright setup, and Shaun has taught a few people some upgrades in their downtime. There is enough room to keep things comfortable, and I have done some park remodeling since I arrived. My closest companions that don’t hate my choices I have made I consider family, but that has become a smaller circle than before.”

What about a partner or partners?

“Gage of course, he is my husband for whatever it is worth in the wasteland. Otherwise I suppose that depends how you are defining that. I am an affectionate person and some people seem to have rather strict definitions of where the edge of friend and partner should be”

Who are your enemies, and why?

“Several people aren’t speaking to me very well at best after I have settled into the Overboss seat here, on a personal level. The Pack were wiped out. The Brotherhood were wiped out. The Institute were wiped out. The minutemen are pretty pissed understandably. The Gunners still show up in vertibirds sometimes and are still pretty fun target practice. My settlements are generally comfortable, and my outposts mostly only have problems with gunners or trappers. Minor annoyances.”

Have you ever heard of The Brotherhood of Steel? What do you think about them?

“Yeah, of course. I think they got too headstrong for their flightsuits. I mean I understand but you really can’t do that shit and expect no repercussions. It was quite a firework show honestly, I wonder how far away the heat was felt..”

What about The Enclave?

"I don’t know much about them, only one of their ex-soldiers, he didn’t exactly tell me much. Cute, a bit odd. Not sure if it is the radiation that did that or not.”

How do you feel about Super Mutants?

He has a flash of a pensive thought drift across his face “There’s a few that aren’t so bad. Obviously the FEV isn’t mass-curable though, so not exactly much of a choice what to do about them unless you like getting a rocket launcher or a nuke in your face.”

What’s the craziest fight you’ve ever been in?

“Proobably~ around Bunker Hill, It was just, A Lot. That whole time was not just the specific fight. I don’t remember a lot of it, I’m pretty sure Gage half dragged me home after the main running around and meetings after the fight. I don’t think I had a full thought for a while.”

Have you ever fought a Deathclaw?

He thumb points to a sniper rifle leaning against the wall “Yeah, too often, thankfully usually I see them first, and I’ve gotten the sneaking thing down. They make pretty good steaks.”

Do you like fighting?

“Sometimes, honestly. Something tired and overstated about old habits or something boring. Really though, it is exciting and keeps the boredom away. Playfighting and sparring will do, no need to draw blood. I guess. Good to keep knife and sneaking skills sharp however you can.”

What’s your weapon of choice?

“A modded real sharp Throatslicer she called it, I swear Nisha found this thing in the loading dock or something it is the nicest box-cutter I have ever owned. Opens up anything.”

How do you survive? Your wits, your charm, your skills, brute force, some combination? (a.k.a. what’s your S.P.E.C.I.A.L?)

“Outlive everything around me usually by not being seen, notice it first, shoot it faster, stab it more, talk my way out of it, or by luck. I have zero real idea, but I can eat nearly anything and I bet that helps too.”

Have you ever been in a vault? What do you think about them?

"Of course, there are a bunch, and I was ushered into 111 to turn my life upside down. They seem to only be any good for salvage, horror stories, clean water sometimes, and if you are real lucky a trade post and a shave. I have a settlement vault that is doing well that I have taken over and built up, but that is not Vault-Tec related, obviously.”

How do you beat all the radiation around here? Has it affected you?

“I have a few recipes that are good for radiation, though it doesn't affect me very badly overall and I am slow to feel any sickness. I suspect that one day I will turn into a ghoul.” He is rather matter of fact and unbothered by this, and hints that he knows that not getting sick much from radiation means just that.

What’s your favorite wasteland critter?

“Probably the stags and gazelles and other herd animals. They are overall unchanged other than most have two heads now, they are still nice to watch”

What’s your least favorite wasteland critter?

“Honestly? radscorpions? Those fuckers are too quick and you cant shoot them cos they tunnel and they knock you on your ass and poison you and just UGH”

How do you feel about robots?

"Robots are alright if they are not causing trouble. Some of them are nice. Jezebel is not so nice, but she is guarding red rocket and bitching the entire time so shes no longer my problem. The Rust Devil’s robots are a pain in my ass for real.”

How many caps do you have on you right now?

"Plenty.”

Nuka Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla?

He cocks his head slightly “I havent heard that one in a while. Depends on the flavor of Nuka Cola, I do like Sunset Sarsaparilla though, if you have any.”

Do you do chems?

"Not recreationally anymore. No, not because of him.” He nods toward Gage “It just, gets out of hand”

Do you ever think about the Pre-War world?

"Not as often as you would expect, I mean obviously there is the ‘oh i remember when that wasn't destroyed’ of things, but things are more comfortable than I thought they could be”

What’s your deepest regret? What would you do differently?

His eyes narrow slightly “I don’t really do regret. Things were done the way they were because it was the choice at the time. A choice now for an old situation isn’t helpful to living my current life or my old life. I am not living then, I am living now.”

What’s your biggest achievement? Or what do you hope to achieve?

“Surviving all of this, and myself. Creating this strange semi-stability in this post apocalyptic place.”

What do you want for the future? For yourself? Your friends? The world?

“Keep me and mine safe, happy as we can be, and I hope that my found-family never fully stops growing. Curious what the future holds for my raiders and friends, there is so much potential, it could be risky but it is there. For once it is a good solid place to be, and it’s mine.” Lucy polishes off his questionable as hell drink with a smile.

Armistice, Lara Elena Donnelly

Rating: Great Read Genre: Fantasy, Spy Thriller, Romance Representation: -Bi protagonist -Black protagonist -Disabled protagonists -(Fantasy) Southeast Asian secondary protagonists Note: Armistice discusses sex explicitly and is NOT YA. Tread with care. Trigger warnings: torture, addiction, fascism, guns, state violence, kidnapping, graphic injury - probably very many more that I have missed. This novel gets its hands dirty.

Armistice is a worthy sequel to an amazing book - you can read my review of Amberlough here. If you haven’t read Amberlough yet, skip this review! Don’t spoil yourself!

Armistice picks up where Amberlough left off, its cast of characters scattering to the winds as the fascist state closes down around the titular port city. Armistice sets us back down in Porachis, where Aristide is using his connections to keep himself relevant in show business - because as long as he’s relevant, he can’t be quietly taken out by the Geddan authorities. Cordelia, meanwhile, arrives with nothing: she’s wanted as a terrorist for her guerilla anti-Ospie actions back home, and her flight to Porachis doesn’t necessarily mean she’s gotten away scot free. We also meet our new, third protagonist: Lillian DePaul, a Geddan diplomat to Porachis whose role has been severely altered since the fascist overhaul of Gedda.

Armistice follows these three as their paths intercross - not always to each other’s benefit. Our protagonists deal with informants, surreptitious photographers, double-crosses, dance routines, old affairs come to light, sons at boarding school, and new information regarding the status of Cyril DePaul. It’s a lot. But it’s a delicious tangle that works itself out in just the right, unexpected way.

Armistice is a middle book done well. The middle book is always a strange beast. It starts in the middle, and can’t resolve every question when the final book in the Dossier, Amnesty, is expected in April of 2019. But even as a middle book, Armistice satisfies the reader’s need for catharsis. The new setting and its challenges, the political climate, and the new combination of characters presents a unique set of problems that are addressed in a satisfying way, while still leaving space for the final book.

Armistice’s biggest difficulty is pacing; due to the nature of the story Donnelly wants to tell, Armistice’s plot is a little unorthodox. It’s more of a two-in-one deal where the first half lines up all the pieces and slowly raises the stakes, while the second half forms a more traditional problem-climax-solution plot. However, the halves are not equal, the second half only spanning the last 80 pages of a nearly 400 page novel. If I were to change one thing about Armistice, I would develop that second plot to more evenly mirror the first - but, then again, my argument really only comes down to aesthetic. I know why Donnelly chose such a breakneck pace for the end of the book, and as disconcerting as it may be to someone who is expecting a traditional novel format, I would rather teach myself to expect the unexpected and enjoy the book than not. Perhaps in the context of Amnesty, Armistice’s atypical pacing will be counterbalanced. I wouldn’t let it stop you from reading the book, that’s for sure.

As far as all the things Armistice did right, I could write about that for a long time. I was really happy with how Donnelly developed Porachis as clearly South Asian, but distinctly fantasy, too. And Porachis was definitely not an exotic backdrop to a Western adventure - Porachin politics play as much importance in the novel as the Geddan politics that chased our protagonists abroad. Lillian’s diplomatic work balancing Geddan and Porachin expectations is central to the novel, as are the social hierarchy, gender politics (exceptionally well done), and royal family of Porachis. Porachis is a fully realized character in the novel, as are the Porachin characters mixed up in Lillian, Aristide, and Cordelia’s lives. I would love to hear more thoughts about Porachis, but from my limited perspective, I found the setting to be well-researched, original, and handled with care. Armistice is exactly what I had hoped for in a sequel to Amberlough - the worldbuilding is superb.

In the interest of not spoiling the entire book, I am going to have to hold my tongue about everything else I liked about it. Without giving any specifics, I liked how Donnelly used complex interpersonal ties to weave a very difficult problem for the characters to disentangle. I liked how she controlled the flow of information, the tension, and the dramatic irony. I liked the handling of romance. I liked how Donnelly’s worldbuilding has continued to be the best I’ve ever encountered in SF/F. I expect to be miserable every minute until Amnesty is released this year, and request that you all join me.

Oooh it’s Taliesin’s Golden Snitch from shapeways. She’s GORGEOUS and i got her in polished gold steel because the treat yo’self mentality has absolutely spoiled me. She rolls wonderfully.

Idk if this means like do you like d10 over d20 or if you prefer metal dice over plastic dice, but i enjoy my d20s and i like both material dice

Ooh gosh, while i haven’t used any in an actual campaign (sadly, but im free from school now so ask me if i wanna join your campaign), i think it’d be this translucent teal dice set or my steampunk plastic dice

GOD i have so many dream dice sets, but basically one of them would be a very nice, LED Black Box NieR Automata dice set that would probably cost a fortune and come with a complementary sticker of 2B

Do you have a d&d character?

Yes! I have two right now; one is a tiefling rogue named Seiris. She flirts with men with the sole intention of taking their money. She’s very gay. And then my other one is a human draconic ice sorcerer named Arcel Deskol

What inspired you to make your character?

Not entirely sure with Seiris, she just kind of happened based on her design. For Arcel, she’s been with me as a concept for a few years now, i think since 2014. She was originally part of a nanowrimo story that i never was fully happy with.

What is your characters background story?

Seiris:

Born and raised amongst thieves, rogues, and the like, this is the only life Seiris has ever known. Her father was arrested for first degree murder and her mother left shortly after, claiming she was unable to "handle being around your kind any longer." This hardened Seiris against humans, instilling in her the belief that her father was a fool to ever breed with them. At the lowest point of her life, around the age of 15, she considered herself to be a mistake. Eventually she got over herself and out of her head and learned to make her own life, one formed by her own rules and regulations

Arcel:

A bit standoffish and a bit of a know-it-all, Arcel isn’t one who’s keen on making friends and the few friends she does have she holds near and dear to her heart. Having grown up with a mother who worked far too hard to ever really spend time with her, Arcel found comfort in books, the smooth paper of the pages and the stories of fantasy comforting her when her mother couldn’t. She comes from a long line of sorcerers via Draconic Bloodline, however she views the inheritance of these powers as a burden rather than a blessing. She left home in search of something more exciting than her stuffy life as a Nobleman's Daughter, bored of lessons, rules, and regulations.She's a bit uptight and prefers to follow the rules, feeling guilty if she were to break laws by a ridiculous amount.
