“A Poet is a nightingale who sits in darkness, and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds” Percy Shelley 🎼 27th January 1756, birth of Austrian musical child prodigy and composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart composed over 600 works during his lifetime, his first piece when he was five. Travelling as a child with his father to various European royal courts to perform; he was 6, when he visited the Habsburg summer residence outside Vienna, and met Archduchess Marie Antoinette who was 7. Legend says that while there Mozart slipped on the polished floor, and was helped by the young future Queen of France, in return he proposed marriage to her. In 1784 Mozart bought a starling from a Vienna pet shop after he had heard the bird singing his Piano Concerto No. 17 in G Major. Three years later the bird died, and Mozart held an elaborate funeral, including heavily veiled mourners, hymns and the reciting of a poem Mozart had written for the occasion. Mozart himself died four years later, amid rumours that he was poisoned by his rival Antonio Salieri that were published in a Berlin newspaper. These rumours were false, but to this day there is no actual known cause of death. 🎼 31st January 1797, birth in Vienna of Franz Peter Schubert, a shared connection between Schubert and Mozart was Mozart’s supposed rival and peer Antonio Salieri, who was Schubert teacher. Salieri also taught Mozart's younger son Franz Xaver Mozart, as well as Franz Liszt, and, Ludwig van Beethoven.
