I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

The general function of the Ravenstag remains the same: liminal marker, harbinger of doom. What changes is what threshold it bridges, what ruin it portends. If the Ravenstag of season one indicates the “growing liminal space between Will and those with whom he empathizes” and the subsequent “encroachment of his nightmares upon reality itself—and his increasing struggle to tell the difference,” then the Ravenstag of season two signifies the growing liminal space between Will and the guise Will assumes. And his increasing struggle to tell the difference.

Thar Amphala, Issylra: Thar Amphala was Vecna's base of operations in the Shadowfell. In 812 it was transported to the Material Plane and marched upon Vasselheim atop a reanimated earth titan. When the titan was killed, its corpse remained as a new mountain, with the ruins of the city atop it.

As I said in my previous post, being in love with Elena is extremely difficult for Damon. Not just because she’s Stefan’s girlfriend, but because he’s a vampire. When Rose tells him it's best to flip his switch, she assumes he's fighting his feelings to survive, when he's fighting his feelings because she's Stefan's girlfriend. It's the entire reason he hooks up with Andie. He'd rather get himself a fake girlfriend than mess around with his brother's girl.

Rose knows Damon is "pretending" his switch is flipped for the sake of survival. That's why she makes mention to pretending during their after-sex conversation. Apparently, the switch wears off after so long. They have no choice but pretend. Because she believes he's fighting his feelings to survive, and knows he's about to repeat Katherine's history with Klaus, she feels it best he actually turn it off. This scene is quite literally foreshadowing. If Damon doesn't flip his switch, he'll risk a certain death. When Stefan refers to "epic plan failures" in 3x9... he's talking about Damon, and he's talking about Klaus' ritual.

Sex is a common coping mechanism. This is how they deal with grief. Rose is mourning Trevor, Damon is technically mourning Elena because she’s Stefan’s girlfriend. Understand that, you'll understand his blood sharing scene with Elena in 4x2.
