South African Jews reacted with outrage on Friday after the country’s governing body for the sport of cricket stripped the Jewish captain of the U-19 national team of his role, citing the “risk of conflict or even violence” as the reason.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that David Teeger, who is Jewish, would no longer captain the side just one week before the opening of the U-19 Cricket World Cup, when teams from 16 nations will compete in South Africa for the sport’s top prize.
In a statement released on Friday, CSA said that its security team had advised “that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament.”
It added that such protests would likely focus on Teeger — an observant Jew and resident of Johannesburg who made his professional cricket debut in 2023, scoring an impressive 51 runs for the South Africa Emerging Players side against North Cape. Teeger was only appointed to the captaincy of the U-19 team last month.
The targeting of Teeger could result “in conflict or even violence between rival groups of protestors,” CSA said. Invoking its “duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup,” it said that Teeger had been “relieved of the captaincy … in the best interests of the players, the U-19 team, and David himself.” Teeger would “remain an important and active member of the team and we wish him and the team every success in the tournament,” CSA concluded.
CSA’s decision — against the background of rising antisemitism in South Africa, widespread support for Hamas in the wake of its Oct. 7 pogrom in Israel, and the charge of “genocide” brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) — provoked fury in South Africa’s Jewish community.
Prof. Karen Milner, chair of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), told The Algemeiner that CSA’s decision was “an outrageous act of antisemitism.”
“There is no basis for this decision, other than the fact that Teeger is Jewish,” Milner said. “It is shameful that CSA is embarking on a path that is dangerously reminiscent of Nazi Germany, when Jews were actively discriminated against, including among sporting clubs.” She stressed that the SAJBD “would do everything in its power to fight against this vicious prejudice.”
In a separate statement, the South African Zionist Federation (SAZF) said it would be calling on the International Cricket Council (ICC), the sport’s global governing body, “to investigate the CSA’s blatant act of discrimination.”
“The ANC [ruling African National Congress] government’s political hostility to Israel and its friendship with Hamas has created a climate in which it is entirely acceptable to target a sportsman because he is proudly Jewish,” the SAZF stated.
Among those expressing sympathy for Teeger on social media was three-time MLB All-Star Kevin Youkilis. “Heart goes out to this young Jewish man,” Youkilis posted on X/Twitter. “The ‘security risk’ excuse is bullshit.”
Former Boston Red Sox star Youkilis also referred to a speech that Teeger made just weeks after the Hamas pogrom, delivered after he received the “Rising Star” Award at a Jewish community ceremony. Teeger paid tribute to the Israeli military, saying, “Yes, I’ve been [given] this award, and yes, I’m now the Rising Star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel.” He went on to dedicate the award to “the State of Israel and every single soldier fighting so that we can live and thrive in the diaspora.”
Teeger was being “punished for showing gratitude to the State of Israel,” Youkilis commented.

MLB Free Agency
The offseason is here with the Houston Astros winning the World Series and wrapping up the 2022 postseason.
So, what's next?
As of now, the 2023 Spring Training will start on Saturday, February 25. There will be the regular MLB teams playing, as well as different World Baseball Classic teams.
Until then, you might think that baseball is at a standstill, but right now, a team's most influential factors are being decided: Who will sign a contract?
Here is a list of my top five free agents to keep an eye on leading up to the 2023 season:
Aaron Judge (RF) - The "Homerun King" himself has not signed back with the Yankees after receiving the 2022 American League MVP award.
Justin Verlander (SP) - The poster child of the Astros bullpen, now the winner of 3 Cy Young awards has not signed back.
Jacob deGrom (SP) - He only had 26 starts over the last two seasons with the Mets, due to injuries, however, he remains one of the most talented starting pitchers in the sport.
Trea Turner (SS) - This shortstop from the Dodgers has record-breaking speed, making this the perfect year to sign him. With bigger bases being installed due to recent rule changes, stealing bases will be more encouraged than ever.
Carlos Correa (SS) - With both the highest number of WAR over the past 2 years in short stops and opting out of his current contract with the Twins, it will be interesting to see where he lands.

The Economic Effect of Shohei Ohtani
I’ve been an avid fan of the globally famous baseball player Shohei Ohtani, ever since he started playing in Major League Baseball (MLB) in 2017! Surprisingly though, my Dad was a fan of Ohtani even before, where he’d played in a team called Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). I went to watch my first Angels game with my Dad as a freshman in high school in 2018. Luckily, our house was near the Angeles stadium so we went to watch Shohei Ohtani play frequently (we weren’t a big fan of the Angels, so only went when Ohtani was playing). In fact, in September 2018, I had the opportunity to play the National Anthem for my marching band at the Angels Stadium, where Shohei Ohtani was recognized as player of the week! Below is the photo:
Tumblr media
The last baseball game I went to was in 2021, my senior year of high school. It’s been over a year since I saw Ohtani play, and I knew Ohtani was approaching his final year of arbitration with the Angels, so I was really excited to watch his game before then.
Fortunately, on October 1, 2022, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced that the club has agreed to a one-year, $30 million contract with the reigning American League MVP Shohei Ohtani for the 2023 season. I immediately texted my friends that we should get a ticket to go watch Ohtani play.
I’ll be discussing four economic concepts in regards to the market for the Shohei Ohtani  tickets:
Factors that affect demand
Elastic vs inelastic demand
Price discrimination
Preference
Sadly, the market for baseball game tickets has changed a lot since I first went a couple of years ago. Going right to the point, I was never able to go back to watch Ohtani play ever after the announcement of the one-year 30-million-dollar contract.
One of the reasons for this is a rise in demand, but what caused this to occur? Over the years, Ohtani became more recognized through his outstanding performance on the field. For example, he became the first player in MLB history to have at least 45 homers, 25 stolen bases, 100 RBIs, 100 runs, eight triples in a season, and became a two-time MVP award winner. His exceptional skills as both pitcher and hitter brought attention to baseball fans like me, as well as the hearts of Japanese supporters who cheer for homegrown talent, having a deep sense of national pride. With the total number of Ohtani fans increasing, so does the demand for his tickets.
Tumblr media
However, that wasn’t the only reason why his tickets were in high demand. Another significant factor that affected the demand was consumers’ expectations of the future. As mentioned earlier, Ohtani agreed to stay in Angels for another year. However during that year, another great player, Mike Trout broke the hamate bone in his left hand, requiring surgery that sidelined him. A day later, Ohtani left his start due to a blister on his pitching hand. Ever since then, the Angels have been on a losing streak, and rumors began to circulate regarding Ohtani’s future with the Angels. Fans grappled with the possibility of Ohtani not resigning with the Angels which meant that Angels and Shohei Ohtani’s fans are expecting a lack of supply for their goods (Angels tickets) in the future, causing the demand to rise.
Tumblr media
Consumer’s Expectation's Effect on Demand
As expected, Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year on December 9, 2023, for 10 years, a $700 million contract! This shocked many people including me because it was the largest contract in worldwide sports history even surpassing Lionel Messi. But this also meant that the price elasticity allowed the ticket-selling firm called Ticketmaster to sell their seats for a higher price. Price elasticity of demand measures how the quantity demanded of a particular good responds to a change in the price of that good. Since the supply is so limited, the price elasticity is inelastic. As a result, even if the prices for the Dodgers game increased, the demand for the tickets wouldn’t decrease as much.
Before the Ohtani signing, the average ticket for opening night was priced at $390.95 per ticket, but tickets for the home opener increased by 152%! How much would that be? The average price for the game scheduled on March 28, 2024, has soared to $983.71. Notice the price of the front seats Ticketmaster sells for:
Tumblr media
This is the reason why Ticketmaster employs a strategy called dynamic pricing when distributing tickets. Dynamic pricing is a method of pricing a good in which the price fluctuates with the current demand. Essentially, the higher the demand is, the higher the price. Ticketmaster says that they use dynamic pricing to prevent scalpers from buying mass quantities of tickets to resell. One could say that Ticketmaster (and Dodgers) have the fans’ best interests in mind. But maybe that’s because those interests line their pockets. Dynamic pricing represents a type of price discrimination, and consumers are charged varying prices to maximize profits.
When athletes become popular, it’s not just ticket sales that will boost; demand for merchandise also skyrockets among fans. This can be exemplified by Shohei Ohtani, whose jersey became the fastest-selling within the first 48 hours of any player in history! It even broke the record that had been held by Lionel Messi when he signed with Miami and placed FC. Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United jersey at third. Taking that into account, if we were to look at different types of jerseys, we may see something like this:
SHOHEI OHTANI JERSEY > LIONEL MESSI JERSEY
LIONEL MESSI JERSEY > CRISTIANO RONALDO JERSEY
SHOHEI OHTANI JERSEY > CRISTIANO RONALDO JERSEY
Of course, this is an example and they might prefer Ronaldo’s jersey over Messi's, or can be mixed up, but keep in mind that Ohtani’s jersey had the fastest selling out of the three, many might prefer Ohtani’s jersey over Messi’s and Ronaldo’s, and Messi’s jersey over Ronaldo’s. This would be an example of rational preference. For reference to be rational, it needs to have complete and transitive preference. Preferences are complete when the person can express a preference against any two alternatives that they could possibly face. Preferences are transitive when the rank ordering is consistent across successive comparisons, just like in the example above where x > y, y > z, and x > z.
When looking at the economic impact of Shohei Ohtani, it became clear that his influence extends far beyond the baseball field. Through his exceptional talent as a pitcher and catcher, he sparked a surge in demand for baseball tickets and merchandise. As he continues to make outstanding performances, the sports economy can further develop and grow. Last but not least, I want to congratulate Ohtani on his recent marriage!

The 27th DICE Awards Nominees Have Been Revealed, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Leads The Pack
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 27th D.I.C.E. Awards return next month to Las Vegas, where the industry-only event celebrates the best games and achievements in games of 2023. Unlike The Game Awards, which are hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, with votes from media outlets and the public in some instances, the D.I.C.E Awards are voted on exclusively by game developers.
Basically, it’s the awards show where the people who made the games you played last year determine their favorite games of last year. It’s an awards show of The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, with D.I.C.E standing for Design, Innovate, Communicate, and Entertain, and amongst the awards, the academy typically inducts someone into the Academy of Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame – we spoke to Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon about it in 2022.
[embedded content]
Like in previous years, Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller and IGN’s Stella Chung will host the show, which will be livestreamed on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
As you might know, 2023 was a great year for games (but an admittedly terrible one for the people who make them with more than 10,000 laid off in the games industry). Leading the pack of the 27th annual D.I.C.E. Awards is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, developed by Insomniac Games, with nine nominations. Following it is Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, with eight nominations. And behind it is Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, with seven nominations.

The 'Montgomery Riverboat Brawl' spoke to millions in 2023
The summer was defined by a viral video that will be remembered in 100 years
For many Americans, New Year’s Eve is a time for reflection, celebration and dedication. Whatever the previous 365-plus days have sent our way are looked back upon with some level of wisdom hopefully gained, while the upcoming calendar is anticipated in the most innocent way possible. The entire event is capped off with a tradition popularized by a newspaper man but invented for the sea.
What you see in Times Square these days at the behest of Ryan Seacrest, and before that Dick Clark, is the brainchild of Adolph Ochs, who owned The New York Times and started the practice in 1908. Now commonly known as a ball drop, it’s an extravagant twist on a technological marvel that was initially invented for an entirely different purpose: marine chronometers.
Time balls, as they were known, helped boats set their clocks when they came to town. When ships pulled in, they knew what time it was, literally.
As 2023 comes to a close, there is not a more apt metaphor for what was the story of the year in Black America. A hundred years from now, its legacy will still stand.
The “Montgomery Riverboat Brawl” likely won’t be forgotten in the yearly cycle of another league or awards season. The when and where is as important as what happened that afternoon in Alabama.
To begin August, the National Association of Black Journalists’ national convention descended upon Birmingham, Alabama, a welcome sight for folks in town. The annual confab for the industry was met with open arms and the sense of community was about as good as it had been between town and function since I’ve been doing this job. Black people had a ton of fun with each other, shared generational experiences per usual, and because of where it is, returned to many historical places that are a part of our shared lineage, such as Selma, which is about 90 minutes away from Birmingham.
Quite a few folks took the trip. Little did they know that barely a week later, the city most famously known for the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Bloody Sunday of 1965, would be back in the news via a previously humdrum Facebook business page.
During that span in Birmingham, Major League Baseball unveiled the logo for their next special regular-season game, this time at the oldest ballpark in America. The game will officially be called MLB at Rickwood: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues. It’s a genuinely magical place, for sure. As the state capital, Montgomery is home of the Montgomery Biscuits, the Tampa Bay Rays’ AA affiliate, which will be playing against the Birmingham Barons two days prior to the MLB game at Rickwood Field.

The Birmingham Times, the local Black community weekly, dedicated its issue to the NABJ conference entirely, with the headline reading, in part, “Birmingham welcomes the voices of a generation.”
Indeed, it did.
In a summer in which blockbuster flicks made $500 million a pop, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé gracefully allowed us in their orbit in their different ways, and hip-hop celebrated its 50-year anniversary, the place known as the “Cradle of the Confederacy” sparked one of the most important historical moments this journalist can think of in many years, on many fronts.
You could teach an entire university class about the multiple layers of generational trauma unleashed in the confrontation. The immediacy of the news connected to the history of the site and the legal untangling that followed (six people were charged in the incident, including Reggie Bernard Ray, known best as the Black man swinging a chair) are the kinds of things people make entire seasons of longform podcasts about. If I were an author, I’d write a book about it.
Montgomery itself is like a choose-your-own-adventure of the most horrifically f— up racist s— you can imagine. All the American classics are there: First confederate capital. Vicious redlining and economic apartheid for generations. Domestic terrorism. It took 200 years for them to elect a Black mayor. That was four years ago.
In specific to the brawl, it’s borderline bizarre how on the nose the whole incident was. The night before, 45 held a campaign rally at that very spot. On the very day of the fight, a group of Black women concluded a two-day healing event with a ceremony sharing their happiness and thanks by laying flowers in the water at the Riverfront.
Two hours later, the pop-off heard around the nation went down. All of course happening at the very spot where enslaved people were brought to town. The very dock. On a boat, likely of the same name.
Of course, there are a million wild things that we could talk about the proceedings but those are for other avenues. What I simply cannot get over is how direct the line is between the very specific interaction of these people and where they came from most immediately.

Riverboat dock worker involved in viral Montgomery, Alabama brawl charged with assault: records
The white folks were friends and family of an owner of a mini-mart in Selma, having a lovely day until they decided to get drunk and basically show their behinds. There are a trove of angles, deep dives, rumors and other things about this specific unfolding that are one thing. Here’s one, two, three, four … nine, if you need that.
But I can’t get past the riverboat. The carrying joke of the moment is that the boat was named the Harriet, like Tubman, making the whole situation much funnier as a solid pop culture joke of what happens when you get your a– whipped. The reality, while far more grim in its origins, not unlike the pugilistic proceedings themselves, makes me laugh a lot more.
That riverboat is named the Harriott II. It’s ostensibly a lovely time just like any other water cruise deep in the American South. It was dedicated in 2008. When it arrived, a lot of people showed up to watch. It aired live on local news. Sure, great. It was named after a boat that famously was the first riverboat that made the trip from Mobile to Montgomery to pick up cotton. … OK. In EIGHTEEN TWENTY ONE. Good lord.
The beatdown boat is named after a boat which a.) definitely carried enslaved people, but b.) was clearly a literal part of the economic engine that fundamentally disenfranchised Black Americans economically, nevermind tried to destroy us humanistically. And guess what that boat was likely named after? You guessed it.
Well, you can just continue down the river, a.k.a. the supply chain in those days. There were not one but two slave ships, each at one point named Harriott or some variation thereof, that were active in triangular trade. Naming a boat after any of these vessels is certainly a choice.
There was a time when those white men would have been fully within their right to effectively single out and proceed to hurt that boat captain to their heart’s content. And way further back than Jim Crow. Look up Virginia’s “casual killing act” of 1669 if you want to ruin your day. But these days, not even close. Those same negroes who you dragged across the ocean on boats named Harriott are now jumping out of boats named Harriott to administer the fade of a lifetime when you wrong our people.
As many of my friends from other lands say often: Only in America.
Perhaps most satisfying about that entire ordeal is that so much of it was very specifically a function of social media. We learned about this through various posts that not only showed but featured incredible contextual narrative provided inherently from those documenting it. We learned everything we know about the offending parties from their posts earlier in the day.
Aaren Rudolph, aka Aquamayne, has a whole new future to consider. The fact that this news was spread, nevermind occurred, due to just the regular tendencies of Black folks just trying to be themselves and stay prudent is incredible to me. Black Twitter, which was once ruled dead but now has come to include basically the combined algorithms of our diaspora across platforms, had a legit rebirth. We told y’all the truth, showed it, too, and people just had to wear it.
Alabama has been about that action. Fun fact: The Black Panther Party began in nearby Lowndes County, too. None of this is news in terms of the resistance, but it was also a reminder that while we have a collective experience that we share and cherish, there is also very much the importance of understanding individual communities for themselves.
Yet, as my FYPs say — a win is a win.

SZA and the year quite like no other
It was a role reversal that was almost too fantastical for Forrest Gump, which won six Academy Awards but these days is widely regarded as hokey but touching. Too over the top, too conveniently aligned with too good of an emotional ending. In the 1994 Tom Hanks movie, Gump, the main lovable character from Greenbow, Alabama, plays college football, becomes an All-American and meets the president.
Perhaps the most laugh-out-loud scene comes when the title character makes good on his word to pay back his best friend. Their shrimp company blows up and Benjamin Buford Blue’s mother faints on the porch when she gets a check from a white man from a fictional town in Alabama.
In the following scene, there’s a reversal from when we are introduced to her as part of a generation of Black women whose lone job it is to serve white men shrimp in dining rooms dating back to plantation days. Now, Blue’s mother is the one getting served shrimp and it’s a white woman doing it. The joke obviously being that after years of having no option but to serve white folks, it was time for that to change. The role reversal is so swift and direct that you can’t help but laugh.
Montgomery, the town affectionately known as “The Gump,” is now ground zero for one of the most serious but somehow hilarious exchanges of the year. Last month, the man who threw his hat in the air — signaling he was in distress to his fellow people — held a press conference. One of the humans in the altercation has pressed charges against the boat co-captain, but the city has not.
“It was just so shocking. Now, for me to get charged for something I do every day, it’s my job? It’s just shocking to me,” Damien Pickett II said in November. “For me to get charged for something I do on the regular [to] make people happy, put smiles on their face?”
The last five years in the United States of America have felt like quite a bit of a reckoning. Over time, the long slow institutional battles we’ve fought to untangle have come to light, and many people understand what an uphill battle there is for any sort of sanity in society, nevermind justice.
For a non-fictional event to play out so poetically, violently and publicly — while leaving many feeling like the result was satisfactory — speaks directly to the lived existence of millions of humans who call this country home by choice or by force. ChatGPT could not have created a scenario this complete.
Someday many years from now, someone will consider acting a fool on the dock again. And on that day, deep inside, something will tell them that’s probably not a smart plan.
When the ancestors speak to you, it’s a good idea to listen. Lesson learned for 2023.

MLB Expansion: Why Am I Obsessed With It?
Tumblr media
The World Series ended last week and the Rangers became the 25th MLB team to win the coveted championship. This leaves the Rockies, Brewers, Mariners, Padres, and Rays as the only teams without a "ring". (Fun fact: 1922 was the first year teams were awarded rings after winning the Series) This was just the 3rd time in MLB history that 2 expansion-era teams faced off for the title, with the other 2 being 2015 and 2019. Without a second thought this seems, at best, like a nifty little stat, but looking deeper, it's borderline amazing it took so long for two expansion teams to play each other in the Fall Classic.
First, let's define "Expansion" team. It's any team added to the league AFTER the first 16 teams. Here are those original teams.
Original 16 MLB Teams and the year they joined MLB
Chicago Cubs - 1876
Atlanta Braves - 1876
Pittsburgh Pirates - 1887
Philadelphia Phillies - 1883
San Francisco Giants - 1883
Cincinnati Reds - 1890
Los Angeles Dodgers - 1890
St. Louis Cardinals - 1892
Baltimore Orioles - 1901
Boston Red Sox - 1901
Chicago White Sox - 1901
Cleveland Guardians - 1901
Detroit Tigers - 1901
Minnesota Twins - 1901
Oakland Athletics - 1901
New York Yankees - 1903
Sure, some of these teams have moved and/or changed names a few times, but as official franchise lineage goes, these are the original Major League teams.
In a short 27 years, baseball exploded to 16 teams. Originally, they were clustered in the east, only stretching as far as St. Louis. Those teams, battled it out for 57 years before any others joined the fray. Most measurements will tell you, to this day, that these 16 teams are still the more popular of the franchises. It's hard to compete with the popularity of the Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Braves, Cubs and Red Sox.
With the rise of commercial air travel, the success of the Braves' move to Milwaukee, and the ousting of the Dodgers and Giants to the West Coast, it was clear Baseball could handle teams in smaller markets all over the US. In 1961 MLB started growing by adding a second Los Angeles-based team, the Angels, and the Senators in Washington DC. The latter moved to Dallas in 1972 to become today's Rangers.
This kicked off a 37-year expansion that saw 14 teams added to the league. Teams popped up everywhere, from the southernmost tip of Florida to Canada to Seattle.
14 Expansion Era Teams and the year they joined MLB
Los Angeles Angels - 1961
Texas Rangers - 1961
Houston Astros - 1962
New York Mets - 1962
Kansas City Royals - 1969
Milwaukee Brewers - 1969
San Diego Padres - 1969
Washington Nationals - 1969
Seattle Mariners - 1977
Toronto Blue Jays - 1977
Colorado Rockies - 1993
Miami Marlins - 1993
Arizona Diamondbacks - 1998
Tampa Bay Rays - 1998
The league nearly doubled in size which, mathematically, made it harder to win a World Series. In 1969, the Mets were the first expansion team to win a title, but for the most part, the expansion teams were absent from the Series altogether. For most new teams, success did not come quickly. In fact, there have only been 14 expansion team champions since the start of the expansion era (1961). Here they are.
Expansion teams that have won a World Series
1969 - Mets 1985 - Royals 1986 - Mets 1992 - Blue Jays 1993 - Blue Jays 1997 - Marlins 2001 - Diamondbacks 2002 - Angels 2003 - Marlins 2015 - Royals 2017 - Astros 2019 - Nationals 2022 - Astros 2023 - Rangers
In 62 years of expansion, only 14 of those years have been won by new teams. If you spread the numbers out and do some math, during the expansion era (1961-2023), the original 16 teams together have had 976 eligible "campaigns" for a World Series, while expansion teams have only had 652 (that's counting each team per year they were in the league, minus the '94 strike year.) That's a 3/2 ratio for the expansion teams during the expansion era. Of course, since the new teams trickled in over the years, that stat is on a sliding scale, but I still feel like they should have had more success, faster.
For a better sample we'll need to look at all the Series played since 1998 (once all the teams were included.) That's 26 years of baseball with a 30-team level playing field. Theoretically, with true parity, 47% of the teams in the series should be expansion teams, and those teams should win 47% of the time. Let's see if that happened.
'98-'23 saw 20 expansion teams play in the World Series. That's 38%, about 9% away from true parity. That period also had 8 expansion World Series champs. That's 31%, even farther from parity. So the phenomenon that brought me to this journey, (2015 the first all-expansion team World Series) is starting to make a little more sense, but it still blows my mind that it took SO long.
I guess, given that most of the newer teams are from smaller markets with smaller fan bases and thus have a smaller cash flow, they can't afford to go out and buy who they need to fill the holes in their lineups like a bigger market can. A hard salary cap could really help in this dept. The bigger markets are also natural tiebreakers themselves. Would you rather make 20 million and play in Tampa, or make 20 million and play in LA?
If we only focus on recent memory, the last 10 years, the expansion teams have been done much better. 12 of the last 20 teams to make the World Series have been from the new batch, and they've won half of them.
More Fun Facts: The Mets and the Astros are tied for the position of most successful expansion franchises as they've both been to 5 Series and Won 2. The Marlins and the Blue Jays won both of the Series they played in, but have only made it to 2 each.
Here's where I dedicate a paragraph to the Phillies. They have been in the league since 1883 and have only won 2 championships. The only other original team to win just 2 World Series is the Guardians, but they joined the league 18 years after the Phillies. The Phils have been historically bad for a long time. If it hasn't been obvious that I'm a Braves fan, this should be the tipping point. :)
I don't think I'm trying to make a point here, maybe MLB should have a hard salary cap, or expansion teams should have found a way to be better, faster. I mean, how can you happily be a Padres, Brewers, or Mariners fan? 45+ years of failure has to create resentment towards the team and baseball as a sport. Hell, if the Braves go 2 years without winning their division, I get antsy.
Regardless of all of this, I'm just fascinated by MLB history. Seeing all these teams start trickling in through the later half of the 20th century, find their footing, and then win a World Series is like watching a child being born, grow, and become an adult. The circle of life.
