How a Spanish designer and an Indonesian tycoon teamed up to create a new take-out packaging material

Andreu Carulla, creative director of the Roca brothers' restaurants, was commissioned with a recycling project at a luxurious sustainable resort in Bali. The result was a series of stools or cutlery made from expanded polystyrene.

In 2018, the Catalan Andreu Carulla —designer and current creative director of the Roca brothers' restaurants— made one of the things he is best at and does with the waste generated every night in the kitchen of the Celler de Can Roca[1]. for which he is best known: creating furniture. Specifically, a line of resistant stools weighing less than two kilos each made from expanded polystyrene or porexpan[2] boxes. By injecting steam into the material, it became a mass that could be worked in a mould. With this technique, he manufactured for the Celler a unique daily seat, because none of them resembled the previous one.

Recently, this process reached the ears of the entrepreneur Ronald Akili, one of the great fortunes of Indonesia, in large part because of the luxury resort Desa Potato Head[3], which he founded and runs on the coast of Bali. Influencers, content creators and Carulla travel there with his family. Ten days they were in paradise. “Of course, we were blown away by what they had set up there,” he recalls by video call: “As soon as you arrive they give you an aluminium bottle with a recycled plastic cap to fill it up at the fountains, they tell you that when you go out try to use their bags and backpacks, all recycled too, and the garbage you generate can be stored and taken away because they are in charge of shredding it in a very beastly machine that they have in their recycling workshop”. In this way, the complex has managed to reduce waste to 5% when, according to data from Potato Head itself, that of a standard five-star hotel oscillates around 50%.

This system arose from an observation of the Indonesian businessman, who noticed the enormous amount of garbage that was produced not only by tourism, but also by the citizens themselves with their deep-rooted habit of eating in the street and throwing away the remains, both chopsticks and palm leaf wrappers. So he hired an external audit to clarify the picture. "First, to minimise the impact, and then to transform that material into something that is ultimately useful and beautiful," says Carulla. To put the audit findings into practice, he has hired a large team: Simon J. Pestridge, former vice president of Nike International, is the executive director of brand experiences. The OMA studio,[4] founded by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, is behind the design of the resort's buildings. The Japanese architect Kengo Kuma[5] will be in charge of a jungle retreat with modular cabins, still in the project phase. Carulla has been one of the last to join the team as a collaborator.

During his stay in Bali, the Catalan was scheduled a route with daily visits to various artisans specialised in the production and handling of bamboo, rattan, glass blowing or basalt stone, to see what uses they could give to the waste. Before, the English designer Max Lamb[6] had made a chair made of 833 plastic bottles and the London studio Toogood[7] created outdoor furniture with bottle caps. Carulla prepared a braided sofa with plastic strips that simulated natural fibres, a design that the gallery of the Italian Rossana Orlandi[8] wanted to acquire for the last Salone del Mobile in Milan[9], although it did not arrive in time to be exhibited in its June edition.

The good news, he advances, is that things have continued to be done: "From Potato they told us that porexpan (expanded polystyrene) still resisted them, despite the fact that they had already found a solution that compacted it and with which they produce soaps, toothbrushes, the typical hotel amenities. But I didn't know much about them." In Carulla's studio they created a material from porexpan inspired by the rattan technique. They presented it in September at a free workshop during Singapore Design Week. The intention was to raise public awareness about disposable takeaway food items. “Everything with good vibes, not from paternalism or with that ‘you are doing terrible’ speech. It was more of a 'do what you want, but look at what we are doing and you, if you want, you can join", he clarifies. The people who signed up for the workshop turned the Styrofoam into a kitchen spoon, and while the object dried—a process that takes days—the utensils were exhibited at the National Design Centre in Singapore[10] along with the pieces signed by Akili’s collaborators, in a show titled N*thing is Possible. “The interesting thing is that the participants' objects were completely different from each other, because you have to roll up the polystyrene and it's like a plasticine churro. If you add more solvent, it becomes softer and more pasty, and if you add less, you get something like dry paper”, describes the Catalan.

Among those attending the workshop were influencers and friends of the brand, so the underlying question here is clear: isn't Potato Head another experiment of the infinite number of sustainability experiments that already exist? Carulla does not deny it, but makes a small note: "The stool that we designed with the material as a sample is already in production, they have made a first series of ten units and they are going to continue manufacturing it, first for their facilities and then to sell in stores at a price that can be quite reasonable”. He says that the same thing will happen with his cutlery and the picnic backpacks he created for resort guests, with the Max Lamb and Toogood furniture, and with the almost 100 spoons in the workshop that have ended up being 500 in the end. The catalogue with all the products is already in progress, as an advance of a future state of the art design firm.

Carulla also responds to whether something similar could be replicated and scalable in the western design sector. He sees it as extremely complicated: "In this case, the coincidence has been that whoever has had the resources has been sensitive enough to allocate them to a good cause, which almost never happens." What then? "If you want to mass-produce something recycled in Europe, you may not need a millionaire, but you will need a very high investment," he says, mentioning a recent case: recently, his studio in Banyoles (Girona) competed for the design of a Mahou chair[11] that should be made from 100% recycled plastic, and of which the brewery planned to produce around five million units.

They won the contest with a design that provided a contemporary version of traditional Portuguese chairs, and they did so in partnership with the Valencian company Sp-Berner[12]. It was the one that invested several million euros in innovation and development and moulds, so that post-consumer plastic –the most difficult to work with, since it does not have optimal properties– could be used entirely as recycled plastic, injecting it throughout a prototype that nowadays, finally a reality, can already be seen on the terraces of bars and cafeterias throughout the country.

In addition, it is widely used for packaging and in the ground, road and hydraulic engineering sector.

Opened in 2010, sustainability was not always a key priority for the hotel until 6 years ago. Today, Potato Head Family champions regeneration, inclusivity, and circularity. Founder Ronald Akili's sustainability ambition has transformed the hospitality company from a beach club for entertainment and food enthusiasts to the destination for all traveller groups. The company's many successes can be attributed to 3 important factors: (1) A problem solver. In 2015, Akili went surfing in Bali with his eldest son, and was taken aback by the amount of trash in the ocean and on the beach. From that day on, he has been committed to making positive impacts by utilizing his businesses as a vehicle of change. Akili has introduced a number of initiatives to transform his hotel to the sustainable pioneer that it is today.(2) A community builder. The brand connects with value-aligned local and international partners across its value-chain creation to implement and amplify climate actions. Sweet Potato Project centres on regenerative agriculture that provides sustenance and jobs for communities in West Bali. Sweet Potato Lab produces creative design solutions to turn daily waste to design objects. Potato Head Studios serve as a place where travellers can interact with the local communities. (3) A storyteller and educator. The company empowers NGOs like Sungai Watch Watch to tell stories and solutions of plastic pollution in rivers in Bali and across Indonesia. The multimedia exhibition Nothing is Impossible at Singapore Design Week 2022 was a powerful visual storytelling experience to showcase that 'a beautiful and sustainable future is achievable.' Sweet Potato Kids Club offers fun activities to inspire and educate the next generation to protect the planet.

Summary: A companion series for Like Gold.

It’s challenging to finish up discharge summaries and operative reports when one’s vision keeps blurring, as it turns out. And when one keeps pressing fingers to their lips in disbelief. A poetic sort of procrastination, indeed.

Blank period, canon-compliant, Sakura-centric, some expanded plot points from Like Gold, fluff and pining, eventually becomes a smut fest with feelings.

Chapter 2/?: A Poetic Sort of Procrastination, Indeed

Sakura saunters home late in the evening, admiring the stars above her in a daze of spring air and clutching her tote bag to her shoulder as if her very life force is tethered to it.

In the flurry of emotion, she completely forgot about returning her library books, but she doesn’t give a damn.

She drudged through her entire pile of paperwork, though it was an almighty effort requiring every ounce of her discipline. Even after Sasuke left, she kept tearing up and just gawking at the impossibly beautiful gift he’s given her, affection requited bubbling up inside her ribcage and unleashed into the air she breathes like some sort of ambrosial perfume she can finally afford to bask in. She has always known there is a softer side to him, that there is much more beneath the surface than he lets on with his laconic demeanor, but this is something else.

It’s challenging to finish up discharge summaries and operative reports when one’s vision keeps blurring, as it turns out.

And when one keeps pressing fingers to their lips in disbelief.

A poetic sort of procrastination, indeed.

She hangs her tote on its entryway hook and carefully removes the box inside once she reaches her apartment. After she’s padded her way to her bedroom, she flips on the two lamps before placing it tenderly on her bed.

Sakura briefly contemplates taking the lid off then and there, but she knows she really should shower first, because otherwise the evening is going to quickly spiral away from her, whirlpool of tender feelings that it already is.

It’s the quickest shower she’s ever taken in her life; berry-scented soap floods her body and seems to take forever to rinse clean in her haste, although it can’t actually be more than a minute or two in reality. It’s also the quickest she’s ever toweled off and changed into pajamas, scurrying back to her room and grabbing the first pair she lays eyes on from her dresser drawer.

Once she has shimmied them on, she opens the box again, and just looks.

It still exists - it doesn’t disappear or dissolve as a figment of her imagination - so she picks it up with careful hands.

It is so, so pretty, exquisite in a way that makes her heart hammer relentlessly against her sternum, a catharsis in her chest sweeter somehow than anything she’s ever experienced.

It’s unavoidable; her eyes well with tears again, because he said he had it made for her. Not found in an antique shop off the beaten path or some happenstance market who knows how many miles away. Not just something that reminded him of her.

Made for me.

Which means he thought of this himself. Silk that shifts colors like the Uchiha crest, fastidiously stitched petals, and a cherry blossom tree, carved light wood that is startlingly similar in tone to the accents here in her bedroom.

And the way he looked at her, after, a storm of silver and obsidian that took her breath away.

And he kissed her.

Sakura doesn’t know how she’s supposed to fall asleep tonight, deliriously happy as she is, or how she’s going to spend any of her free time from here on out not staring at this supernal treasure. She strokes the wood with careful fingers, bringing the carving upwards for closer inspection. Every inch of it is gorgeous; she is especially enamored with the pink and pearlescent stitching, coruscant in the low light. She assiduously counts the slivers of bamboo, too, and follows the rivulets of fine branches stretching upwards to the boundaries of the framework. Upon her inquest, she notices an impossibly tiny etching, faintly whittled on the interior of one of the slats of bamboo. Tai Ro, it says; she assumes that must be the craftsman’s signature. She wonders where it came from, which far-off land Sasuke traveled through to commission something so resplendent.

She has never seen anything so bewitching, except maybe silver flecks.

Tearing her gaze away from the fan, Sakura eyes the vanity by her balcony door, an idea brewing.

It’s an aged piece, of a bygone style featuring small drawers on each size and a sunken point in the middle, from which rises a large circular mirror. A framed copy of their original Team Seven portrait sits pushed against the framing, right in the center. She placed it there because she enjoys seeing it as she gets ready for the day. It’s a good memory, one of her favorites, sentimental in a way that makes her heart swell, after everything. A pale wooden hairbrush also sits perched atop its surface, given to her by her mother forever ago while she was still at the Academy.

“I found it in the market today, just after swinging by to pick up rose food from Ino’s mother. It’s old, an antique, but I think it suits you, my dear,” she’d said, ruffling her hair, still long at that point and chattering a mile a minute in the overbearing way she has always tended to. She’d brushed her already combed locks in the manner that Sakura thinks all mothers must with their daughters, even when they are starting to become too grown for that sort of thing. “What I wouldn’t give for your hair! So unique; you should have something lovely to brush it with. You’re already such a pretty girl, but someday you’re going to bloom, and when you do, heaven help the boys.”

There’s a cherry blossom on it, too, adorning the back simply with five perfect petals.

When Sakura moved out of her parents’ house, she chose the tones of her bedroom accents, inclusive of the frame, with it in mind; she’d been using it for years by then, and had developed a fondness for pale wood rooted in familial nostalgia. Most of her actual furniture in the room is secondhand, of an older variety and painted with a white stain to make them somewhat match - she prefers things with a little bit of history, has since her mom gifted her that hairbrush - but the few frames and wall-mounted shelves are lighter washes of wood.

Many of the surfaces in her apartment are cluttered with books and other knick knacks she has accumulated through the years, but she tries to keep the vanity’s top clear, almost like an altar, an ode to the things she finds lovely atop it to give her hope with which to greet the day.

Still clutching the gift tenderly in her hands, Sakura ventures over to it.

She holds the fan close to the frame as well as the brush, comparing the color, near an exact match, a fresh memory making her heart swell in a completely different way, a way she had previously thought was maybe unrealistic.

She’ll get a stand for it, she decides, and display it in the spot the frame currently sits; it would look perfect there, the curvature echoed above it in circular looking glass, a hairbrush of a similar stain beside it. Then she’ll be able to gaze at it every morning and evening. There is no way something this precious to her could ever be stored away in a box and only seen on special occasions; it’s the same reason she struggled with the idea of hiding his letters away in one.

No, Sakura is resolutely sure that admiring it will be a daily ritual.

She can relocate the photo frame to her bedside table, maybe, next to An Introduction to Electrocardiography , or perhaps to her living room, though it doesn’t really match the wood out there.

That gets her thinking. We’re... together now, right? He’s kissed her, and she really hopes he will again, surprisingly soft lips against hers, an aroma of woodsmoke, and butterflies unleashed in her stomach. Maybe she should put the frame on the shelf in the main room. He might come over, sometime; it would be good to have it visible, situated in a place where he can see it.

With the utmost care, she lays the fan on the surface in front of her. Sakura combs through wet locks, coaxing out tangles with an old gift and appreciating a new one with watery eyes. When she’s finished, she carefully clutches it again and admires it atop a lavender comforter for the better part of an hour, alternating between mentally mapping its fine stitching within the confines of her hippocampus and paging through her book of Sasuke’s letters in a way that is more than fond, affection freed from her chest after so very long. The jubilance crests to a sense of omneity as she does so, moon glow filtering in by way of the gauzy white curtains that shield the balcony’s glass door.

She absolutely can’t wait to see him tomorrow. She sincerely hopes she’s not dreaming all of this.

She is so enamored with it that she doesn’t even drink her customary evening tea, her being warmed in an entirely different manner she is as of yet unaccustomed to, better than earl grey or some variety of dessert. It’s immensely difficult to pry it from her own hands when the time comes to do so.

Always is the last word she thinks of before she succumbs to slumber, curled up in soft colors and hoping he has found somewhere comfortable to sleep. Treasured memories emanate from objects old and new, brewing together before a looking glass where she’s placed them for safekeeping and admiration.

When she awakens in the morning, Sakura jerks upright in bed, turning to her vanity to ascertain if it was all a dream, cozened in by her subconscious as she slept.

It wasn’t. The fan is still there, precious and so enchantingly beautiful, dawn flavoring the memory of Sasuke’s return just as sweet as it had tasted yesterday with his lips on hers.

She brushes her hair again, working at the task way longer than necessary and trying not to cry out of sheer happiness. She feels so light, as if being pulled upwards by a latterly existent force of gravity, theoretically possible in terms of relative physics and with the right circumstances, but never actually experienced.

Birds are singing on the balcony when Sakura finally steps outside, snacking on seeds from her bird feeder as she gives her fledgling plants a drink before leaving for work.

It is such a lovely morning.

Sakura makes it through work as if encapsulated in a brand of inertial navigation system, floating as if she’s a bizarrely sentient cloud from patients to test tubes. She feeds the mice and records the brief observations she usually does on Wednesdays, and then a Genin is being brought in with a linear fracture in their tibia, twisted wrong and impacted during training. She gives instructions to nurses, too, taking care of smaller tasks in between, part of her feeling like she is barely there.

Well, not barely. She still keeps her wits about her and heals people; she takes pride in what she does. She just… daydreams a little, too, sage, smoke, and silver occupying her spare moments, flitting in between the corridors of her head as she flits from exam room to exam room.

She’s sitting at her desk, eating an early dinner and working on a new pile of paperwork before her next appointment arrives at five thirty, when one of Naruto’s clones bangs on her window.

Her gaze shifts to the glass at the familiar boisterous whining of her name - “Sakura-chaaaaaaan!” - and she rises to open it the rest of the way, allowing him entry into her office, an easy grin coming to her lips.

“Naruto!” A million thoughts run through her head. He has to know Sasuke’s back at this point, right? Has he seen him? He must be so happy.

Cyan bores into her, and he grins as he steps down. “Sakura-chan, teme’s back! Can you believe it? Though I guess you knew since yesterday.”

Sakura’s cheeks warm at the implication of that, wondering how he knows this information, but her friend is plowing onwards.

“Anyways, wanna have an original Team Seven reunion dinner on Saturday night? Or maybe Sunday night? Kakashi-sensei said Saturday would be better for him, if it works for you. And we should also make it a housewarming party for teme, but Kakashi-sensei says DON’T tell him that, or he won’t agree! It’s a surprise.”

Laughter erupts from her chest, rich and joyful, because it is crystal clear in that moment that Naruto is as elated at Sasuke’s return as she is - okay, maybe not quite on the level that she is, but close - even through a clone. “Of course, we should! I don’t have anything planned for Saturday night.”

Her teammate grins, all infectious happiness in the way that is so utterly characteristic of him, eyes crinkling at their corners. “Good, great, awesome! Be sure to mention it to him when you see him at seven. I’m sure if you suggest it, he’ll definitely agree.” Sakura blinks in surprise, cheeks staining darker. “Man, this is gonna be so great! Team Seven is fucking back ! I can’t wait to get a mission! It’ll be just like old times. I gotta tell Hinata-chan, too!”

She can’t help it; she smiles so wide that it hurts her face, tears paying her another visit. Sasuke’s back. He’s really back. And-

“Well, anyways, I’ll leave you to eat your dinner, Sakura-chan, but we have to force him to be social. I can’t wait to spar! But also, we gotta have a picnic, and no tying me to the pole this time. We could even challenge Kakashi-sensei to get off his ass and give us another go at the bell test. And, and! We should have a movie night. And go drinking! I’ve never seen teme drunk. I bet he’s a lightweight, and he’ll probably say all sorts of embarrassing shit! And-” Naruto’s clone’s expression turns unexpectedly serious, blue eyes suddenly narrowing in a way that is all-seeing and a tan finger suddenly pointing at her accusingly.

“-I mean social outside of you and him, Sakura-chan! Don’t think for a second that you’re gonna escape my questions later, when my brain isn’t fried from staring at that stupid scroll Kakashi-sensei has me slaving over. I want answers. ”

And then Naruto’s clone disappears in a puff of smoke, leaving her blinking in a strange combination of bewilderment and somehow, shyness, too.

And ebullience. Mostly ebullience.

She stands there grinning like an idiot for a long time. She can’t wait to see him at seven.

featuring wound-tending, reminiscence, touchy feely horseshit, and implied erections. AU means alternate universe, but given the timeline fuckery, everything’s an alternate universe. I took it upon myself to re-interpret the prompt. Au is, after all, the atomic symbol for gold.

Scorpion had never wanted to be part of that story more than he did now. Perhaps he had felt this way a long time, but finding the words and the timing had been a battle for which the Shirai-Ryu warrior was utterly unprepared. He was relieved his counterpart had finally made his move. He held tightly to Sub-Zero and breathed deeply the heady scent of Edenian blooms, of the minerals in the spring, the coppery tang of his own blood, and that old scent of desire which surrounded them both. Now was not the time to act rashly, however. Kuai Liang pressed a gentle kiss to Hanzo’s chest and looked up at him.

“I will tend your wound,” he said, not asking. His hand stayed where it was, covering the still-bleeding thing, and Scorpion nodded. They stayed that way for several moments longer, simply drinking in the other’s company, coming down from the adrenaline high of kombat.

Presently, Sub-Zero shifted and stood as Scorpion stood back to allow him passage. To one side of the springs was a small outbuilding that looked mostly finished and was, in fact, stocked with cultivated, refined massage oils, scented soaps, and of course a first aid kit. Its modernity made Hanzo chuckle, given the overall traditional nature of the Lin Kuei. His clan, too, was the same way. They accepted technological boosts and gifts from allies in Special Forces, but for the most part, they, too, stuck to their “guns”, as Johnny Cage might have put it. Takeda was a rare exception and he was still a skilled fighter, even without his electronics. Those, he insisted, only enhanced what he already had. Maybe he was right, but Scorpion preferred keeping things as simple as possible.

It took very little to dress the injury, which was superficial. Kuai Liang found a seat on an as yet uninstalled bench that looked to be made of fine, golden bamboo and thence, pulled Hanzo close so his hips were roughly at eye level. He did his best to disguise the hunger in his eyes as the man’s hips were not the only thing at the level of his gaze. Tending the abrasion with gentle, practiced fingers, he was only half aware of the sensations that were traveling up the other man’s spine, setting off alarm bells in his mind that he was controlling with the greatest of skill and concentration. Half, because Kuai Liang was no fool and could see for himself how it was affecting his companion. It was affecting him as well.

The melancholy of Frost’s exile was overshadowed by whatever strange electricity they were exchanging. He wanted more of it, craved the sparks that flew between them, wanted so badly to ignite something, to make it into an eternal blaze. He thought of the well-hidden box in his chambers, buried deep in his most precious things, in the chest at the foot of his bed. His hope was to see that bed sometime soon with Hanzo at his side… perhaps underneath him—perhaps atop; he cared little, only to be with him, to become one, to never part, in spirit if not in body, as their duties as Grandmasters would necessarily pull them to the far-flung corners of Earthrealm.

“Come,” he said for what felt like the millionth time that day. He stood and took both of Hanzo’s battle-roughened hands. “Now perhaps the restorative power of the springs will be more readily apparent, as you have just engaged in kombat.”

Scorpion scoffed, proving correct the venom behind his moniker. “I would hardly call that kombat.” He knew it was harsh, but he had little respect to spare for those who disdained their gracious master’s teachings. He knew, for example, that were it not for Kuai Liang, Frost would not even be part of the Lin Kuei. If Sektor remained in power, she would be part of another type of stable entirely. His jaw tightened at the thought, but he trailed along behind Kuai Liang, giving no resistance, wanting the proximity and to return to the heat of the springs.

Sub-Zero lost himself in thought as they descended into the water. Unbeknownst to both men, their minds had turned to the same turning point in the Lin Kuei’s history. Both imagined a permanently cyberized Sub-Zero, locked in eternal, bloody kombat with a wraith of pure ire and the never-sated need for vengeance, pitted against each other for the amusement of an acolyte of Shinnok. Once Quan-Chi claimed Kuai Liang’s soul, they would fight side-by-side, as they had once done, one a slave in the mind, one in the heart.

And Shinnok would have been reborn by their hand.

No one would have stood against him, had Scorpion not regained his senses. The Cage family was mighty, but they—the Lin Kuei—and the two grandmasters were a force of nature not even Lord Raiden could halt… assuming he was not providing some horrific vessel for Shinnok’s return. They had both heard the whispering of the depraved Netherrealm sorcerer, Quan-Chi, and his wicked machinations to bring his master back to the world of the living.

But that was a past which had been altered and a future which would never be. Kuai Liang drew Hanzo to him and once more, Hanzo yielded. He was becoming accustomed to this, craving the closeness and the contact. Gently, Sub-Zero turned him in his arms, so that the kryomancer’s chest was pressed to his back, thick arms wrapped around him.

“Look,” he whispered into Scorpion’s ear with a minute gesture of his chin. In the illumination of the sconces and braziers, veins of gold were suddenly visible upon the stones over which they had just trod—and upon which Frost had just bled—and these veins continued, following and splitting and branching right into the springs.

“Are we facing east, a-Liang?” Hanzo asked.

“We are.”

The sunrise would illuminate these veins of gold, shining off them and flashing as it rose into the sky. Behind them, the hot springs backed into a sheer cliff face which, Hanzo was certain, was also veined with gold—or this gold-like substance. Given the amount of Edenian magic that seemed to have created this grotto, he had no doubt the mineral lodes were not of Earthrealm origin and that Arctika might very well have been the most valuable place in the realm.

Made more so by the presence of the greatest grandmaster the Lin Kuei had ever known.

Hanzo Hasashi was not a man who heaped idle praise. When he admired someone, it was with good reason. He had admired Kuai Liang’s brother before him. Bi-Han had been the most powerful kryomancer in many generations, perhaps since the dilution of the bloodlines. He had given that all up in a ruthless grab for power and gave himself to Shinnok. Such a waste, Hanzo considered, tilting his head as he felt Kuai Liang’s lips trail downward from ear to jaw to the side of his neck and then to the place where neck joined shoulder.

He did not want to think of Bi-Han now. He spared no pity for a man who had made his own choices. Perhaps if he had known more—but one could only make decisions and pass judgment based on information in one’s possession. That was then, long gone, yet another thread of fate that had been disentangled from his own.

Moreover, he knew how Sub-Zero felt about the man whose title he had claimed. Hanzo also knew that the claiming of a title in such a way, between blood relatives, was, if not strictly forbidden, considered to be in very poor form among the kryomancers. Blood ties were bonds that weakened. He was glad to know that the new grandmaster thought otherwise. Knew otherwise.

It was truly remarkable how easily they fell into each other’s arms, how comfortable they were around the other man in such an intimate way and so quickly. But it wasn’t quick, not really. The two grandmasters had known each other since they were young men. This night was years in the making, their destinies weaving together like threads of gold until the cord became strong enough to support what they were and, more than that, what they would become.

After an hour or so of kisses, gentle touches, caresses, quiet conversation, and comfortable silence, Sub-Zero suggested they retire:

“To my chambers, if you would do me the honor, Grandmaster Hasashi.”

He was upon the steps, one foot out of the water, one hand extended back to his companion. Hanzo moved forward and took that hand, though of course he did not need it. Again, he simply desired the contact, the press of flesh, the heat and mesothermic chill that, when mixed, became something perfect.

Stepping out himself, he found himself once more following and wondered when he had become so passive. This is new territory and no wise warrior dives in headfirst, he reminded himself. He did not think himself a wise warrior, he was simply someone who was capable of surviving and that took a modicum of cleverness, at least.

Kuai Liang stopped and stooped to pick up the discarded cloak of furs, releasing Hanzo’s hand to brush it off and offer it up. “We haven’t finished,” he explained, “so there are no towels.”

“My armor—”

“Will be retrieved and polished by my most trusted students,” said Sub-Zero, lifting the cloak a little. When Hanzo’s shoulders sagged as they had done earlier in the evening at their tea, he knew he had won and proceeded to wrap the fine, soft thing about the naked shoulders of the man he wanted to call his lover.

Once he was satisfied the man was bundled tightly, Kuai Liang took a risk. He moved swift as a shadow and leveraged his height and Hanzo’s weight to knock the man into his arms, lifting him easily. Wrapped as he was in the cloak, escape was, while not impossible, something of a nuisance. Scorpion grunted and Sub-Zero felt the temperature rise minutely, though they were headed away from the spring.

“Patience, I beg,” he said quickly, pausing to press his lips to the man’s temple which was much warmer than that of a healthy human being. “Still your firestorm, Hanzo. I will not put you or your honor in jeopardy.”

The man was stiff in his arms, unrelenting. He fixed Kuai Liang with a gaze of honey gold with something akin to a bonfire raging behind it. He knew he was asking much and that the Shirai-Ryu grandmaster had endured yet more. He was only begging a small extension on the man’s already-short patience.

“I will have your word of honor,” growled the cloak-bundled man, who was in no position to be making demands, but who made them anyway. I pray I can keep up, Kuai Liang thought with some real fear. The fear was quashed in those beautiful eyes and he nodded.

“By my honor, this remains between us,” said Sub-Zero, as he shouldered his way through the gates. True to form, no one was there to open them, therefore to watch. He took the same path back toward his receiving hall as his chambers were nearby and Hanzo noted that the snow had begun to fall again. The great flakes accumulated everywhere, upon the ground, the trees, the cloak, and Kuai Liang’s bare shoulders.

“And my journey here was a display of power, hm?” Hanzo scoffed sharply, having only just realized that the kryomancer remained naked as the day he was born. Kuai Liang shrugged.

“It seemed neater this way,” he said, diverging from the reverse course of their initial path until he came upon a small, quiet area that looked like it might have been a garden without the snow covering it. The white stuff blanketed everything and Hanzo fought a minute shiver—it really was cold—as Sub-Zero’s muffled footsteps led him up a set of steps and into a warmly-lit, expansive room.

Hanzo Hasashi had not had the pleasure of seeing his counterpart’s chambers. And why would he? What purpose would it serve beyond the one it was now going to fulfill. His heart was fluttering and then hammering in turns and he fought to calm himself as Kuai Liang carried him toward a large, fur-covered bed.

“If the accommodations do not suffice,” said Sub-Zero, laying his bundled charge upon that bed, “others can be arranged, Grandmaster. I would hate for you to feel slighted in my home.”

There was a genuine sincerity to the man’s words. He was giving Hanzo an out. He would force nothing on anyone this night or any night. They were allies, not enemies. More than that, they were friends and this display proved there was a deep trust that had long ago been seeded inside them. Only now were the vines growing strongly enough to reach out and embrace the other, cleaving their lives together for a very, VERY long time.

“These will do,” said Hanzo with an hauteur the kryomancer found audacious and endearing all at once. He had it bad, as some of their allies might have said, and Kuai Liang was all to happy to succumb to it, whatever it was.

In a motion that was strangely graceful for his wrapped state, Scorpion freed himself from the cloak but somehow also managed to stay covered, almost demurely hiding his body, which Kuai Liang had already seen, from view. Something about the movement caught the kryomancer’s attention in a way none of his previous actions had done, including taking down Frost with not a shred of clothing on him.

“I will treasure every moment with you like it is made of gold, Hanzo,” whispered Kuai Liang, crawling onto the bed after him and pressing his back into the furs, closing the gap between their mouths until there was only an inch or two of space.

“See that you do, a-Liang, or I will make you suffer.”

Sub-Zero did not laugh. Instead, he kissed the man utterly without restraint, letting his lips and tongue tell the tale of what he would do to inform Scorpion of his worth.
