Dancing in the Rain
Tumblr media
“You know, when I pictured this vacation, I imagined a little more tropical beaches and a little less torrential rains,” Kensi commented, peering out the cabin window with a grim expression.
Since Hetty disrupted their plans to road trip across the state after Deeks’ FLETC graduation, they’d been forced to make alternative plans a few months later. By that time, the Airbnbs and hotels they’d originally booked were no longer available, or way outside their budget, so Deeks had to look for alternative accommodations.
Which is how they ended up in a little cabin smack in the middle of the Oregon woods. During a particularly rainy week. Normally, the rainy season had wrapped up by April, but not this year. It had started raining shortly after they arrived, and barely let up since.
All the fun activities Deeks had planned went to the wayside, keeping them cooped up inside for the most part.
“I’m sorry,” Deeks apologized, wrapping his arms around from behind, and resting his chin on her head. “Everything I checked indicated that the weather would be nicer by now.”
“It’s not your fault.” Kensi made a disgruntled sound. “You didn’t decide to come home from FLETC early, or cancel our vacation.”
From her tone, he could guess who she did blame. Once the dust had settled around his expedited graduation, Kensi’s annoyance had grown exponentially. Four months later, and she still hadn’t completely forgiven Hetty for her scheming.
Kensi slid her hand up to cover his. “I know how hard you tried to make this a good trip.”
“You just were hoping that leaving the cabin didn’t require water skis?”
She snorted at his summation, then sighed deeply.
“I guess I was hoping for this to be a break from all the crappy stuff that happened this past year. Now this just seems like an omen of more disappointment.”
They watched the rain pour down onto the flourishing trees and vegetation. It seemed to fit Kensi melancholy, the familiar scent and sound of water hitting leaves.
“You know, there’s no reason why we can’t go for a small hike,” Deeks suggested a few minutes later.
“You mean other than the flood?” When he didn’t respond, Kensi twisted her neck to look at him. “You’re serious.”
“Yeah. We brought boots and jackets. It’ll be good to get out.” He paused, lowering his voice playfully. “Unless you think you can’t keep up. I mean I prove that I’m capable of keeping up with FLETC’s best.”
“Oh, I can definitely keep up,” Kensi said with a hint of her usual competitiveness. Exactly as Deeks had hoped. “Get your raincoat and try not to fall, Atticus.”
Ten minutes later they were decked out in coats, boots, and carrying umbrellas just in case. They decided to take one of the many trails that surrounded the cabin—a huge selling point when Deeks had booked the place.
It was surprisingly peaceful, and as they hiked through the muddy leaves and weeds, he felt his spirits rising. It was also warmer than he anticipated. After trekking up a particulary steep part of the path, he tugged his hood down, letting the cool rain wash the sweat off his skin.
“Deeks, you’re going to get soaked,” Kensi said, slipping over the leaves as she followed after him. He offered her a hand, and she tugged herself up, resting briefly against a tree, inhaling deeply.
“What didn’t you ever play in the rain?”
“When I was about 5.”
“You should try it again. It’s good for the spirit,” Deeks said, unzipping his jacket and shrugging it off. He stuffed it into the backpack he carried, then held his arms out from his sides as the rain began to seep through his shirt.
Kensi shook her head, then reluctantly stripped her own jacket off. Once it was safely stored away too, Deeks set the bag to the side, and took a few step backwards.
“No, lets see if you can catch me,” he taunted, darting off down the path.
He heard Kensi gasp something unintelligible, then the sound of her racing after him. Deeks grinned, dodging a tree stump. He kept a good gap between them for most of the chase until they entered a small clearing, marking the end of the trail.
Deeks spun around as Kensi crashed through after him, hair plastered to her head, and sweatshirt equally wet. She had a dangerous look on her eyes. He started to backing up, holding his hands up in surrender, but Kensi didn’t stop.
Instead, she wrapped her arms around his middle, moving them both until his back his a tree.
“Gotcha,” she murmured, fire and triumph sparkling in her eyes.
“Yeah, you did,” he said unevenly.
Stretching up on her toes, Kensi grasped the sides of his head, fingers sliding through his dripping hair, and kissed him. Her lips were hard and insistent, making him gasp. Dragging her hands down his back, she sucked his bottom lip between her teeth.
She pulled back with a wicked grin. “You know what else is fun in the rain?” In answer, she stripped his shirt over his head. The wet fabric clung to his skin, and they were both giggling by the time she got it off.
Sliding her hands across his bare skin, Kensi pulled his head back to hers.
“Best vacation ever,” Deeks murmured right before their lips met again.
***
A/N: I have no idea if it was actually more rainy in Oregon in April 2021.
Why exactly would they go to Oregon you might ask? Well, it’s quite rainy there, and it’s a fair distance from LA.
Also, the title is misleading since no actual dancing occurs.

Arrival to Keflavík · Lost luggage · Birth of the Meradalir volcano · Night in Akranes
4th of August, 2022
After a long flight with two transfers - a busy night spent on Stockholm airport, early breakfast for two (= shared Norwegian beer) and enjoying the sight of a beautiful landscape after departing from airport in Oslo, we finally arrived to Keflavík - only to find out, that one of our backpacks was left back in Stockholm. Knowing, that we have time until the evening for the luggage to arrive, we decided to pick up our rented car and explore the surroundings. As we didn't have an exact plan for our first day in Iceland, our best option was to stay in a close proximity to Keflavík airport. And how damn lucky we were! Only one day has passed since the birth of the Meradalir volcano, and the starting point for the hike was only 30 minutes away from the airport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spectacular view of the solidified lava fields from previous eruptions in Geldingadalir, photo taken at the starting point of Route A to Meradalir volcano.
The hike to the volcano itself took us approximately 2 hours of leisurely walking. Vast area of the Fagradsfjall volcanic system was constantly monitored closely by scientists. We watched the volcano from a safe distance from above, nevertheless it was an experience of a lifetime. Later we noticed quite a lot of people in considerable proximity to the volcano and we considered returning back and going closer to the fissure at the end of our trip. Unfortunately, we were unable to do so due to time constraints.
Tumblr media
Meradalir eruption, second day (4th of August, 2022).
After this unforgettable hike, it was almost time to get our lost luggage. On our way to Keflavík airport, we made short stops on the south coast of Reykjanes peninsula to observe a few swimming seals and we also took a peek at the Gunnuhver hot springs. First Icelandic word of the day was „hætta“ - danger. One has to be careful around all that lava, geothermal hot springs and pools. But the views are definitely worth it :)
We decided to spend our first night in a camp in the town of Akranes. We managed to watch the eye-flattering sunset, although the sun barely sets and the night is never completely dark in August. If you have to watch your budget, the best option is to buy a camping card at a very favorable price, which gives you access to several camping sites all over Iceland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First night at the Akranes camping site, which was one of our favourites, as it offers great facilities and amazing seaview.

Probably going to start a backpacking/camping blog soon! I'll post a link once it's made, but we're still a little ways from that point 😅 just very excited!!
For my pack I got an Osprey Aura AG LT 65. I know a lot of people have some issues with Osprey, but the Aura is sooo nice for curvy people like me. You can customize pretty much any setting to best fit you, and it has all the compartments I was wanting. At a little under 4lbs it's not the best for someone wanting to go ultralight, but I wanted a more traditional pack because eventually I want to be able to carry up to at least 40lbs of gear for long hiking trips.
My bag is a NEMO Disco 15 (the women's model cuz, again, curvy. Leaves more room for the hips), which I only went for because of the July 4th sale on Moosejaw. I found out it was slightly cheaper on REI after I bought it, but thankfully I'm in a place where a few cents shouldn't make-or-break me anymore. Thank goodness for Affirm, though! Otherwise my credit would be awful 😬
Still deciding on a sleeping pad. My husband wants a Big Agnes but I feel like we could probably go with something a little more budget friendly for the rest of our gear. I've found some decent options online with high reviews that are a fraction of the price of the big name brands.
Also still debating on tents. We go back and forth on having individual tents or one two-person tent. The goal is to eventually have both, but for now it's probably more cost effective to just go with a two-person tent. I found one on Amazon that's super lightweight with lots of great reviews!
If anybody reading this has any suggestions, would love to hear your input ☺️ as long as it's helpful and/or constructive, not just being rude about my gear choices. I did a lot of research before settling on my pack and bag, so I'm good on those fronts.

Check the Tent’s Capacity: Choose a tent that can comfortably accommodate the number of people in your group. Keep in mind that you may want extra space for gear storage.
Evaluate Weather Resistance: Depending on the season and location of your trip, weather resistance is a crucial factor. Look for tents that offer protection from rain, wind, and other potential weather conditions.
Assess Setup Ease: Choose a tent that is easy to set up and take down. Practice setting it up at home before your trip to ensure you’re familiar with the process.
Look for Additional Features: Consider features such as vestibules for gear storage, interior pockets for organization, and dual doors for convenient access.

Proper maintenance and care can extend the life of your Camp and Climb Tent and ensure it remains in top condition for future adventures. Here are some tips for tent maintenance:
Clean and Dry Your Tent: After each use, clean your tent to remove dirt and debris. Allow it to dry completely before storing it to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Store Properly: Store your tent in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid storing it in compressed form for long periods, as this can damage the fabric and seams.
Inspect for Damage: Regularly inspect your tent for signs of damage, such as tears or holes. Repair any damage promptly to prevent it from worsening.
Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, storage, and maintenance to ensure the longevity of your tent.

Nathan’s Sweet European Vacation Part I
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is early May, and college athlete Nathan is finishing his exams and water polo practices before summer break officially begins. It’s been a long grey winter in the Midwest, and Nathan is aching for a change of scenery. For this summer, Nathan has planned a backpacking trip across a few Eastern European countries.
Excited about his upcoming adventure, he daydreams of hiking in the countryside, visiting small towns, tasting local cuisines, and meeting new people. In preparation, Nathan has been training hard to build stamina and endurance for this five-week journey.
Four Weeks Later
Nathan is now a little more than halfway through his European adventure. So far, he has not been disappointed with the scenery, the food, and the wonderful people he has met along the way. The only thing that Nathan was not prepared for was his budget. About halfway through his trip, his funds are running low. To compensate for this, Nathan has opted to take cheaper hostels and seek out odd jobs to earn some quick cash to keep him traveling.
On this day, his journey has taken him into a small old-world town on the outskirts of a sprawling forest. The town was picturesque with its squares, cobblestone streets, and crowded shops and homes. Around two in the afternoon, the townsfolk were shopping, dining, and chatting. At 6’1 and dressed in his backpacking gear, Nathan stood out as he walked through the streets. His presence made the heads and eyes of men and women take notice. Young and in his physical prime, Nathan’s ego swelled, his cheeks blushed, and strutted from the attention. Since it’s been several weeks on the road, Nathan decided to spend a little extra money tonight to secure a private room at the hostel and go out with hopes of meeting someone.
Tumblr media
As Nathan passed the market on his way to find the town’s hostel to book a room, he began to smell the most delicious sweets. Almost hypnotized, his nose leads him down a small winding alleyway to a bakery tucked away from the main street amongst the surrounding stores and apartments.
Nathan peers through the window of a small bakery. His eyes widen as he looks upon the large variety of sweets neatly organized in bins, on trays, and displayed on shelves. Nathan has never seen anything like it before. He was never one for pastries due to his training and keeping his lean physique, but he was hungry and on vacation – So why not treat himself?
As Nathan entered, he noticed that the shop had a few patrons in local garb, picking loaves of bread, rolls, and sweets and placing them into their wicker baskets. Their appearance looked a bit disheveled as if they lived in the nearby forest rather than in town.
Upon seeing the visitor, the patrons gathered their items quickly and made their way out of the shop. Nathan noticed that none of them paid for the items or that the shop had a vendor behind the counter.
Nathan walks further into the shop and becomes fully engrossed in the sweet smells of everything around him. His mouth begins to water as he takes deep breaths in. Upon exhaling, Nathan is alerted to his undeniable hunger.
Nathan is quickly snapped out of his daze, by a warm baritone male voice behind him, asking “Can I help you?”
A bit startled, Nathan turns around. He was not expecting to see a tall handsome man standing there with a tray of doughnuts. The man was tall with a broad chest that complimented his carved facial features. The tray in his hands looked small in comparison to the size of his forearms. He had darker features of chestnut brown hair, brown eyes, and a short beard. His tan skin made his smile ever brighter as he gazed at his young visitor.
The baker smiled at the young lad and asked again if he could help him with anything.

A bit lost for words, Nathan fumbled out “Hey.”
“Hi, my name is Gareth.” The baker said with a smile. “Welcome to my bakery. If you are looking for something sweet, you have come to the right place. I have the best in the county.”
(with a bit of a stutter) “Hi…, I’m Nathan. I was just exploring the town, and I smelled the baked goods from the main street.”
Continuing to look at the lad, Gareth welcomed Nathan with his wide grin, the baker encouraged him to look around the shop. Nathan saw many of his favorite treats from his childhood (e.g., cinnamon rolls, strudels, and doughnuts). However, the young athlete was taken aback by the sheer volume of never-seen-before local treats. Nathan was in awe, drool slipping out from his lip. He slowly spun around from one delicacy to another.
Gareth, watching and noticing how memorized he was by his treats, snapped his fingers a few times to get the boy’s attention. “Hello, can I help you find an item, or would you like to sample something specific?”
“Ummm, Oh! Hi, yes. Sorry, your store is amazing. I have never seen anything like it. I have not been one for sweets since I was a kid, but this place is something else.” Nathan sheepishly admitted.
“Thank you. The shop has been in my family for centuries, and its pastries are legendary. Once tasted, some find it hard to resist going back for another.” Said Gareth.
“I can believe it. Everything in your shop looks delicious. I was thinking of grabbing a few items for the road. I have been on the road for a couple of weeks, and some pastries would keep my energy up.”
At that moment, Nathan’s stomach begins to rumble again, forcing him to rub both hands across his abs to settle it down. Looking down, Nathan notices his watch and that it is getting late. After this, he realizes he forgot to secure a bed at the hostel for the night.
In a panic, Nathan asks the baker where the hostel is in town.
“Unfortunately, our town doesn’t have one.” Said Gareth, “Our town is small and rarely gets visitors. Some places may have a spare room to rent out.”
Nathan, a bit panicked, asked Gareth if he knew of any rooms or accommodation nearby that might be available for a night.
The handsome baker, in his smooth baritone voice, says, “This is your lucky day. As I have a room available, he could have it for the night in exchange for some help in the kitchen. I will even let you have the left-over bake goods that don’t sell.”
“Wow, really – Thank you!” Nathan, overjoyed by this lucky turn of fortune, was excited to not only secure a place to stay for the night, but have tons of treats to load up on.
Hearing Nathan’s stomach rumble again, Gareth tells him to put his jacket and gear behind the counter and motions him to follow him to the kitchen. “Let us get you something to eat, and I will show you some tasks that I need help with.”
As they entered the kitchen together, Gareth's eyes were on Nathan as he was shocked by the size of the kitchen space. The kitchen must have been twice the size of the retail space. At the heart of the kitchen was a large wooden table covered in trays of pastries. There were large piping bags full of different fillings, cooling racks of pastries waiting to fill, and loaves of bread cooling.
“This place is crazy.”, Nathan said. “It is like a factory. Why do you have such a large kitchen in a small town?”
The proud baker reminded Nathan that they have been in business for centuries and supply the county. We ship in bulk and have many clients around the globe who enjoy my creative creations.
Gareth then gestures for him to sit at the table.
As he sat down, Nathan’s tall athletic frame was dwarfed by the towering cooling racks, making him feel like he was at the kid's table at Thanksgiving. Now faced with a table full of desserts, Nathan fully realized how hungry…starving he was.
“Oh man, I am so hungry. May I have some to eat while I work?” asked Nathan.
Gareth, “Of Course! I need help preparing these treats for sale. As you work, feel free to eat whatever you’d like. I have my little black book of instructions on the table next to you.” Nathan then looked over at a very old, dilapidated journal. “It is all common sense really, but feel free to use it if needed.”
“First, if you could fill these doughnuts with the assorted jellies, decorate the cookies, glaze the cinnamon rolls, and powder the strudels. Then you can help me with the pies, bread, and chocolate croissants.
I will be running some errands and will be back in about an hour. Then I will close the shop and check in on your progress.”
The baker heads towards the kitchen door, stopping to take one last look at Nathan as he opens the book of instructions and pages through it, completely unaware of his current predicament.  Gareth, knowing what is in store for his new guest, slowly closes the kitchen door behind him and quietly locks it.
