Hi Mr. Rainbow
Can you please tell me what is going on with Yibo and Yehua stock listing? People are saying he has become CEO. Did he? I am confused.
Yet I am happy to see him with top executives sharing the main stage and main positions. Jiaayo Yibo!!
Hi Anon!
Tumblr media
DD is not the CEO of Yuehua. 😅
I think some fans have been calling him CEO Wang Yibo because he looks the part, and it's kind of a fanfiction AU fantasy. 😅
Du Hua is the CEO of Yuehua, and if you've been paying attention to her over the past few years, she appears to have gone to great lengths to keep DD happy and to support him as the primary breadwinner for the company.
Yuehua is the management company DD signed with when he was still a trainee. His contract ended with them a year or two ago and he re-signed in a much stronger capacity, in part because he's brought in as much as 60 to 80% of their revenue for years.
Although we do not know the full details of the contract, some details are known because of the public documents available through the listing of the company on the stock exchange. His new contract runs until 2026. He is a shareholder of the company now and will be receiving a percentage of the profits.
The company has been trying for years to get listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. They finally succeeded, and today was their official listing ceremony. The shares have jumped in value by 54% since being listed.
As a shareholder, DD will have a stake in the fortunes of the company and his shares will gain or lose value depending on how the company does, which gives him new ways to profit from his success.
Cheng Er (director of Hidden Blade) and Yu Dong (head of Bona Film Group) were both present at the ceremony today as well. Some fans have been calling the three of them (including DD) a touring boy band because of all of the appearances they've been doing together lately to promote the film. 😅😅🥺

Hidden Blade / Wuming
Wang Yibo’s performance as Mr. Ye and the art created by the film’s director, Cheng Er
::-::-::-::-::-::
The shadowy puzzle-box pleasures of Chinese spy thriller Hidden Blade
Satisfyingly cerebral, Hidden Blade features a masterful Tony Leung and a breakout performance from Wang Yibo.

Wang Yibo and Eric Wang in Cheng Er’s moody, shadowy spy thriller Hidden Blade, now in cinemas. Well Go USA
Toward the end of Hidden Blade (无名), the arty Chinese World War II spy thriller that has now reached US cinemas, everything comes to a halt.
“Matte kudasai,” Wang Yibo, playing the canny, careful Secretary Ye, says in silky Japanese. Wait, please.
And then we all — the character he’s talking to, the camera, the film score, the audience, the movie — slow down and wait. We wait for him to light a cigarette, take a drag, then another. We wait for him to look at his reflection. We watch him, wreathed in smoke, take his time.
With a lesser actor, this would feel excessive, showy; it would flatten the moment. But this is Wang Yibo, star of The Untamed and Street Dance of China, former K-pop idol, sometime motorcycle racer, multitalented polymath, and multinational heartthrob. In the pause, tension and dark purpose coil in his jawline, his shoulders, in every flick of his wrist. I have never wanted to look at anything more in my life.
Hidden Blade has gone largely unnoticed in mainstream US media, usually getting name-checked as the legendary Tony Leung’s latest film. The New York Times gave it a kind but mixed capsule review. Other outlets that bothered to review it did so poorly, with multiple reviewers unable to tell cast members apart from one another (!), a handful misunderstanding and misstating the plot, one reviewer dismissing the entire cast apart from Leung. Several wrote it off as a propaganda film.
But Hidden Blade, from writer-director Cheng Er, deserves a much better critical assessment than this. It serves propaganda only in the way that the average war movie might glorify the homeland — think Top Gun: Maverick. In this case, that means a homeland battered by a brutal Japanese occupation. Our timeline centers around Republic-era China, several years after the Nanjing Massacre. The country’s combative factions — the Japanese occupants, the Kuomintang leadership, the current puppet government, and the underground communist resistance — all vie to control China’s future as the war wages around them. Our main characters, Director He (Leung) and his subordinate Secretary Ye (Wang), both work for the Japanese regime in Shanghai, rooting out members of each of the opposing factions and doing the governor’s bidding. But spies are everywhere, and their allegiances aren’t always obvious — sometimes not even to themselves.
Tumblr media
Hidden Blade’s production house, Bona Film Group, loosely placed this film into a “trilogy” called the China Victory Trilogy. (The prior film, The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021), was a mega-blockbuster; this film had a far more lowkey release, though it’s been such a success — closing on $1 billion RMB, it’s reportedly the top-grossing art film in Chinese history — that there’s talk of a sequel.) Each film, linked thematically but not materially, highlights a different group of ordinary people battling a war. This outing explores the pressures placed on WWII spies who often had to work in complete isolation for months and even years; the film’s Chinese title translates to Anonymous. Cheng takes the smoke-and-mirrors obfuscation of the spy genre literally: Ye spends much of the time he’s onscreen symbolically mirroring He, while studying himself in mirrors, being looked at through mirrors, and functioning as a looking-glass for the film itself.
This could all easily feel like shallow gloss with little substance, and the plot seems relatively thin; but over the course of the film, that plot reveals itself to be a tightly edited jigsaw awaiting your assembly.
This is a big part of why repeated viewings of Hidden Blade are such a pleasure (I saw it six times in four days). The film is a metaphorical escape room you find your way through, muddling at first, then quicker and quicker until you arrive at an open door. Cheng’s aesthetic style flickers through the muted action of the first half, from Godard-like formalism to von Trier-esque visual war poetry to outright Tarkovsky homages. But steadily the stylistic flourishes give way to a riveting, sparse thriller with phenomenal fight scenes, staged with excellent attention to setting and detail by fight choreographer Chao Chen. Cai Tao’s cinematography has lingered with me for days, with some shots cracking the whole film wide open for me on third or fourth watch.
This film basks in tiny thematic details — the timing of a musical cue, the symbolism of a tableau, the way a character’s face is lit between light and shadow. Then there’s the symbology; my friends have been discussing the thematic element of food in this movie for days: The symbolism of an intimidating bowl of drunken shrimp, the political nuances of debates over French cuisine, the secrets of an unassuming box of pastry.
In other words, Hidden Blade’s cerebral challenges invite you to play the games its characters are playing. It opens itself to the audience more and more with every repeat viewing. The supporting cast makes the most of limited emotional real estate; Eric Wang and Zhou Xun sink their teeth into their very different roles in the spy game. Tony Leung’s performance in particular grows craftier and more intelligent on every viewing as you begin to understand the veneer of polite soullessness around which he layers his real, veiled emotions. The moments he lets them peek through are masterful to behold.
But as much as Tony Leung was made for subtle but heady roles like this, Hidden Blade belongs to Wang Yibo, and so does this review.

A production still of Hidden Blade featuring Wang Yibo, released for the film’s ¥500m box office. The film has since grossed nearly ¥1 billion. Bona Film Group
This is Yibo, after all, a 25-year-old wunderkind who spent his childhood training in Korea to become a K-pop idol but who returned to China and became a Chinese entertainer slash dance star slash actor instead. I first wrote about Yibo here in 2020 in my review of the historical fantasy series The Untamed. I described him then as “conveying Grand Canyons of emotional depth” through “mesmerizing infinitesimal facial adjustments.”
Tumblr media
A screen cap of Wang Yibo as Lan Wangji from the global phenomenon, Chinese tv series, Chén Qíng Lìng / The Untamed (2019) Tencent (New Style Media Group)
Since then, I have watched Yibo disappear into one strikingly different character after another, embodying them all with talent and skill beyond his years; I have watched him deliver performance after performance, transforming himself onstage and off. He has a star quality that’s hard to describe until you truly get acquainted with his performances and his persona. On first impression, he’s rarely the hottest or the strongest or the glitziest entertainer in a room — but he’s the one who unfailingly blows you away in the end, the one you can’t stop talking about.
As Secretary Ye, Yibo packs the same intensity: He smolders and throbs and pulses his way through Hidden Blade, talking only rarely but speaking volumes with the soulful eyes that first captivated me and a jillion other fans three years ago.
Since The Untamed, Yibo has become a massive star in his home country. He was originally scheduled to make his film debut in the much more high-profile Born to Fly (now scheduled for a spring release), in which he stars as the equivalent to Tom Cruise in Top Gun. As much pressure as a role like that must be to play, the weight Yibo carries in Hidden Blade feels almost heavier. Cheng has talked at length about how the more he saw Yibo act, the bigger his part became; he rewrote the film around Yibo as production progressed, eventually transforming Ye from a smaller part into the soul of the movie.
That’s a huge responsibility, but Yibo shoulders it effortlessly. He immerses himself in Ye’s tortured psyche; he trembles and seethes and changes the mood of an entire scene with a single sharp glance. A debut like this, from an actor this young, in a part this intense, carrying the entire film beside one of China’s greatest living actors, all while juggling four different languages (Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese and Shanghainese dialects) feels remarkable. Yibo’s performance seals Hidden Blade’s status as an unexpected pleasure. Once finally assembled, its cinematic intricacies yield infinite rewards.

from this article written about Hidden Blade’s Beijing press conference.
Director Reveals Reversal and Suspense is the Biggest Point of View
Tumblr media
On January 17th, the spy war movie "Wu Ming", written and directed by Cheng Er, starring Tony Leung and Wang Yibo, held its premiere in Beijing. Cheng Er, Wang Yibo and others attended the scene, while Tony Leung, Zhou Xun, Jiang Shuying and others interacted with the audience through remote connections.
The film tells the story of the outbreak of the Total War of Resistance, the Communist Party of China led by the Chinese Communist Special Branch in Shanghai — circling between Chongqing, Wang and Japanese spy agencies. through the intricate intelligence system behind the enemy, to turn the enemy, to obtain information, to kill traitors, to establish a broader united front, until the eve of victory in the war.
The word 'Wu Ming' is inspired by the Monument to the Unknown Heroes in Xishan, Beijing." The producer Bona Films CEO Yu Dong explained, "From 1937 to 1945, there were a group of heroes who were born and died on the hidden front. although many of them did not even leave their names after their sacrifices, their heroic deeds are worthy of being written and remembered. This film hopes to show the struggle of the unknown, and take the audience to see a world that has never been seen before."
Tony Leung revealed , this is the second time I have appeared in Mandarin with the original sound. For this reason, he specially learned Mandarin from his teacher. "At first I practiced with my teacher in Hong Kong. After arriving in Shanghai, the director changed all the scripts and then learned again. although my Mandarin is not very good, but speaking from my own mouth, the feeling is still different, and it is also very important for the shaping of characters."
Zhou Xun said that she has known director Cheng Er for a long time, and she has always liked his works, especially his lighting and narrative methods. It was a pleasure working with the director.
Wang Yibo revealed that he not only needs to speak Mandarin in his film, but also challenges other languages according to the plot. "I have lived abroad and learned other languages, so learning a language is more like memorizing lyrics for me, and there will be a rhythm in it." Just like the suspenseful atmosphere in the film, during the entire press conference, the creators mentioned The details of the film are always "off the hook". Subsequently, each creator used a keyword to describe the film.
Wang Yibo chose "thrilling". He said that his first leading role in a movie still feels like a dream, and the fighting scenes between himself and Tony Leung are very "thrilling", including literary dramas as well.
Dapeng used "reversal charm" to describe the film, "If you don't watch the movie, even our actors don't know who is good and who is bad. It really didn't happen until the last second."
Cheng Er revealed, Reversal and suspense are one of the biggest highlights of this film. "Many details are very particular, including the tie worn by the actor, which is consistent with the identity and personality of the character, and hides the mystery."
In the "Wu Ming” trailer Finally, the words "super commercial film" were printed on the subtitles. Yu Dong revealed that the cost of the film was as high as 300 million yuan. Cheng Er's last movie was "The History of Romantic Disappearance" 7 years ago. Although the reputation was good, the box office was very mediocre. This time, Yu Dong is very confident, "Director Cheng Er has added commercial elements while maintaining his personal style this time. I believe the box office of this film on the first day of its release will exceed the sum of all his previous films. "
Wu Ming is scheduled to be released nationwide on January 22, the first day of the Lunar New Year.

A perfect succinct summation of current university expectations of minorities in America:
The soft bigotry of low expectations.
And the hard fragility of high entitlement.
The way this plays out often goes via proxy, however. Many students become represented against their will by activists with a particular ideological mindset. And often, they're "allies" demonstrating their virtuous bona fides, not members of those groups.
Note that the request that set off this shit-show was from "a non-black" student.
This (white) commentator rattles off some bogus pseudoscience to insist he "should have" complied; the same author has also decided that "divorce isn't fair" because her ex-husband isn't poor, so that tells you the mentality.
"I really wish his parents would give me that money"
As a timely reminder, Mike Nayna is releasing his Grievance Studies Affair documentary, "The Reformers," on his Substack over the next couple of weeks. Part 1 (free) and Part 2 (subscribers only) are already up, and Part 3 is coming next week.
Just today he's also released an accompaniment called, oddly enough, "The Reformers: An Accompaniment." This is essentially a re-cut of his previous three-part Evergreen State College documentary into a single film. I believe it's free to view.
Part of the way through the film, a former president of the college - who is black, by the way - is receiving an award and a building being named after him. During his speech, some entitled student barges up, takes the microphone and starts ranting like a nutcase.
Nobody does anything. Nobody cuts the mic. Nobody tells her to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up because everything is not about her and her tantrums all the time. When she's done, the former president tries to address some of the points, and she and her pals start talking and chanting over the top, rambling about their "oppression."
Keep in mind, this is a liberal arts college in one of the most blue states in the entire US. These are extremely privileged people acting out a perverted, ideological Live Action Roleplay. They have few, if any, real issues; they're out there fighting postmodern dragons. At the time, this was shocking, and the language and mental processes were bizarre and alien. But nowadays, that language and mindset are everywhere.
The film proceeds along to the notorious takeover and hostage situation where students invade and lockdown the admin building, and the then-president tells everyone to go along with it. The students even yell at him over the placement of his hands, and laugh at him about bathroom breaks for the hostages. Nobody pushes back on this. The president even tells security to stand down.
To this day, nobody can tell you coherently what any of this complete meltdown was actually all about, and to my knowledge, little if any disciplinary action was taken against the perpetrators. If there's one person you'll see time and again through the footage, it's a guy called Jamil Bee. He was essentially the ringleader of the whole thing, but he was never expelled, he was never disciplined, and he was held up as a hero and invited to talks and lectures, Kendi-style.
So what he and his activist friends learned is that they could do whatever they wanted. He's even quoted as saying:
"Nothing is the limit to reparations." "There is no limit that can be set over us in being able to squash oppressive behavior."
The definitions of which he and similar activist types get to decide themselves: "you don't get to decide what's racism - only we do." This type of narcissistic authoritarianism has been celebrated and rewarded, rather than ridiculed and mocked as it should be, or held to the fires of the institutions policies and rules on appropriate conduct. They just let him slide.
And part of that was, as you mentioned, bigotry of low expectations. Nobody will tell these students "no." But also the fear of being called a mean name by intellectual infants: "racist," "white supremacist," "transphobic" or something similar. These words are only useful because they're not a pervasive problem any more; they're aberrational. Calling someone "racist" during Jim Crow wouldn't solicit any meaningful moral panic or defensiveness. But now the accused let them get away with this because it's easier than having to defend themselves from some baseless pro forma accusation of bigotry.
And that screws everything up for the majority of students who aren't mentally ill sociopaths.
This is something that plays out again and again and again. Colleges submit to the emotional outbursts and tantrums of students instead of doing the right thing and putting them in a time-out until they can come back and apologize - Yale and Stanford have had this sort of thing play out again and again.
What's not spoken about is that behind the scenes, it's often college administrators themselves - and particularly the apparatchiks in the DIE bureaucracies - facilitating this, teaching students this "harm" and "unsafe" and "danger" and "words are violence" mentality in the first place.

I got real angry about DC vs Marvel movies and yelled about it for a while, it was very cathartic
So here's the thing.
I'm not interested in litigating or relitigating the MCU. I'm over it. But the MCU fucked up summer tentpole movies, because like Tolkien did to fantasy, they've convinced everyone that they have the only formula for success.
Here's why that's fucking DC so hard: because Marvel is about groups, and DC is about people.
The grand history of Marvel Comics is about who is, figuratively, in bed with who. Marvel is about big teams that fight other big teams, because ultimately Marvel is about holding a mirror up to the real world and saying that all of this *makes big hand motion* is a metaphor for the larger issue.
DC's not.
It's not. It never has been. When you think about the greatest moments from huge DC Comics crossover epics, it's moments of individual heroism or cruelty. It's Barry on the treadmill sacrificing himself. It's Max Lord shooting Blue Beetle in the head. DC is The Longbow Hunters. DC is The Hiketeia. DC is Solomon Grundy being forced into the cycle of reincarnation in Starman when he's finally known peace. DC is Crispus Allen realizing that he will never be whole again, but choice is an illusion.
DC Comics is about individuals who are unique and uniquely alone, and not just that, their choice to be alone is validated by the text over and over and over. They are punished for the choice to let people in constantly. In DC Comics, the path that is presented as correct is to be on your own, maybe with one person you can trust. JLA has felt like an afterthought since the 80's and you can fuckin quote me on that.
DC's been doing this for decades. Marvel definitely has those characters that lend themselves towards it, though I find that especially in the Silver Age they really overcorrected when they tried. But it's embedded into the ethos of the DC universe. It's a place out of time where people work on their own. The two narratives are constructed differently, and oh my god it is just so much easier to pull someone out and spotlight them than to throw a bunch of people together.
DC, in its movies, has absolutely the fuck failed to capitalize on any of this. Do you know what lengths I would go to for a Hard Traveling Heroes movie??? WHERE IS MY ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. All those TV shows that do so well? It's because they all do exactly this. Smallville ran for about four seasons longer than anybody needed it to, and it's about a guy who is uniquely separated from the rest of the world, where the only people who can truly understand him are, their word not mine, freaks.
I do not care about the Justice League! I have shown to you my many DC bona fides and I say that when I was still actively reading DC, it was the one I always skipped. I put it to you that the Snyder Cut still would have been the second-worst MCU film, but it was even more of a failure as a DC film, for its complete inability to understand what DC is.
Wonder Woman was great! That's because it was a war movie about a woman who is out of place and out of time, who was forced to make the choice to attack. It’s a huge movie in terms of set pieces, but it’s a very small story. Where is my fucking Ralph and Sue Dibny detective movie???
The two lessons they haven't fucking learned from the MCU are that 1) you have to have good characters before you smush them together 2) sometimes you just have to take a leap. My GOD if you're gonna make another goddamn "what if Superman.... bad????????" movie, it better FUCKING be Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. I am just the fuck exhausted of hearing there's gonna be another DC movie and having to hide my face.

YOU PEOPLE (2023)
Starring Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny, Nia Long, Molly Gordon, Sam Jay, Travis Bennett, Mike Epps, Deon Cole, Rhea Perlman, Andrew Schulz, Andrea Savage, La La Anthony, Jordan Firstman, Bryan Greenberg, Matt Walsh, Minnie Holtzman, Elliott Gould, Richard Benjamin, Hal Linden and Anthony Anderson.
Screenplay by  Jonah Hill & Kenya Barris.
Directed by Kenya Barris.
Distributed by Netflix. 118 minutes. Rated R.
There is something oddly old-fashioned about You People, even though it probably was meant to seem rather edgy. In 2023 it is not that unusual for people to fall in love with someone of a vastly different background, race and religion. Nor is it really all that necessary in the new millennium for a couple’s parents to be on board in order for a couple to consider marriage. Guys don’t need to ask the dad for permission to propose in the modern world.
This old-fashioned vibe in itself is not necessarily a bad thing – this is at heart a rom-com and doesn’t need to push the envelope completely to tell its story.
The diverse couple are Ezra, a thirty-ish Jewish guy who co-hosts a podcast taking a light-hearted and slightly edgy look at modern life and race, and Amira (Lauren London), an African American designer. The two meet exceedingly cute – he mistakes her for his Uber driver, and she thinks he’s a crazy carjacker – but somehow find a connection. Both have been disappointed by love and fall easily and naturally into a rhythm and then fall in love.
All good, right?
The complications start when the families enter the picture. Amira’s father Akbar (Eddie Murphy) is a devout Muslim and totally refuses to engage with Ezra, and mother Fatima (Nia Long) is only slightly more welcoming. On the other hand, Ezra’s mother Shelley (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is smothering in her openness to welcome Amira to the fold and prove her liberal bona fides, and Ezra’s dad Arnold (David Duchovny) comes clean about his obsession with Xzibit and Pimp My Ride.
And do you know what? In the first half of the film, You People actually has some of the bite it was seeking to portray, particularly in a hilariously awkward scene where the parents first meet and there is consternation about Minister Farrakhan and whether slavery and the Holocaust were equally horrific. Some of the conversations between Ezra and his best friend/podcast cohost Mo (Sam Jay) also have similar bite.
Then about a half-hour to 45 minutes in, the film downshifts and becomes as safe as milk. This section has little more to say about race relations than the 1967 granddaddy of the form, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
Which is a shame because there is some fine humor and terrific acting on display. In the first half, Murphy does some of his finest work in years because he was willing to rein things in and play the straight man. (The second half of the film, his performance loses some of its tightness, but is still mostly worthy.) And Louis-Dreyfus is a treasure in just about anything, and her mocking of clueless liberal overreach is both smart and funny.
There is a clash of comic styles as well as cultures, which leads You People to feel a bit disjointed, but that’s probably the point. Co-written by star Jonah Hill and Blackish creator Kenya Barris, the film has some interesting twists and looks at many points of view. Plus, it brings together such great old pros as Elliott Gould, Mike Epps, Richard Benjamin, Deon Cole, Rhea Perlman, Kym Whitley and Hal Linden, which is always a plus, although honestly of that group only Epps really gets anything worthwhile to do onscreen.
But in the second half it all just evaporates. Everything just slams into cliched rom-com mode, and honestly, I didn’t buy the late romantic complication for a second, nor the eventual epiphany.
So, maybe You People is the perfect fare for Netflix. You can check out the first half and decide at your convenience when or if you want to finish it off.

Hard Boiled
For today’s blog, I wanted to choose a film to watch that correlated with my last response, where I discussed the Hong Kong New Wave. In this response, I mentioned two key directors of this time, one of which being John Woo. After completing some research before determining a certain film to watch, I came across Hard Boiled, a 1992 action film directed by Woo. The film follows as an undercover cop sets out to stop a gangster and his group. While doing so, he goes to large extremes, and faces MANY near-death experiences.
Tumblr media
What initially caught my eye about choosing this film was reading that this film was focused on undercover cops, over Hong Kong’s cinema typical concentration of mobsters and/or other characters involved in intense action. This creative choice really exemplified the times of the New Wave. Similarly, another source provided context of Woo’s choices of film making prior to this one, stating, “Following a burnout break in the 1980s, Woo teamed up with super-producer Tsui Hark to make A Better Tomorrow, a revolutionary blockbuster that set the template for the “heroic bloodshed” subgenre of ultra-stylized, gritty yet emotional Hong Kong action flicks. With a bona fide game-changer under his belt, Woo was allowed to explore his own style with relative creative freedom, notching two more classics with A Better Tomorrow II and The Killer.” (Seidel, 2023).
There is no denying that this film was action PACKED! Woo wonderfully executed stunting scenes, really making them appear to be realistic (at least for a 90’s film. Credit where it is due, people!!). This movie really demonstrated the new lines that directors were pushing, especially Woo, to produce these incredible works of art.
The following clip is the entirety of the hospital shooting scene. I found this clip to be the best one to put here due to its heightened intensity, and due to the fact that this is arguably (in my opinion) the best scene in the movie.
youtube
Though I appreciated the action, and did overall enjoy the film, I do not necessarily believe that the actual plot line itself kept me entertained. Another source similarly mentioned, “Most action movies are audacious in spurts. John Woo’s Hard Boiled (1992) is exciting because it’s almost all audacity. We watch it with disbelief; the bangs and explosions and gymnastic leaps out of a bullet’s path are presented to us with such exquisite vulgarity that we look forward to how Woo is going to shock us next. It doesn’t matter as much where the storyline is or where it’s going.” (Peterson Reviews, 2023). I certainly agree, that the action spoke for itself, regardless of what was happening with the plot itself. I would recommend this movie for anyone looking for consistent action, blood, and gore in a film.

Happy New Year 2024!!
1/1/24: So here we are, the last New Year of this blog. I do intend to carry on after my 50th birthday in a couple weeks, but not after a long break... I've been doing this for free for six and a half years and I have other things I need to attend to. Regarding 1974, it's kind of a lousy year for both Pop and Rock... I think the Boomers just kinda gave up thinking and gave in to the lounge life, getting high, drunk, and everything in between... sort of a Disco mentality before Disco. Interestingly, it was quite the opposite year for film, with some of the greatest movies ever made coming out in 1974 (Blazing Saddles, Chinatown, Godfather Part II, etc.). Anyway, the MUSIC... like I said everyone seemed to be coasting: Zeppelin took a year off, as did The Who and Pink Floyd; the Stones put out maybe their first 'meh' record since the mid-1960s (when record companies were breaking up their records for maximum profit). McCartney was still riding high with Band on the Run, as was Black Sabbath with Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath... Prog in the UK was dying a prolonged death (whose sound began spawning imitators over in this hemisphere, most of which sucked pretty hard) as Yes would put out a lousy record and EL&P took three years off. The best stuff came from a lot of second tier artists: Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, Neil Young, David Bowie (his last as Ziggy), ELO, and Budgie. Perhaps the best album of 1974 belongs to the British Prog-ish group Supertramp, whose third album Crime of the Century most certainly drew Dark Side of the Moon comparisons... a must listen, if you listen to anything from this year at all. Second best: BOC's Secret Treaties. Third best: Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic (not as good as Countdown but still excellent). Fourth best: Aerosmith Get Your Wings. Alex Chilton of Big Star would have quite a productive year as well, releasing one Big Star record (we'll do it) and creating tunes for another (that wouldn't be released until 1978). Some of the new kids on the block include: Rush, although this is before Neil Peart joins for their second album on drums and lyrics, so here you are dealing with mostly a Canadian Zeppelin copycat band (although 'Working Man' and 'In the Mood' are bona-fide Rock Classics); Bad Company, which is basically Free reborn with better production and was the first non-Zeppelin band on Swan Song records... tis okay; Kiss, whose legend speaks for itself; and the bassist for the Stones, Bill Wyman, with a surprisingly excellent solo debut, Monkey Grip. Some of my favorite songs from this year include 'Doraville' by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, 'In For the Kill' by Budgie, 'Dreamer' by Supertramp, 'Fingerprint File' by the Stones, 'Astral Man' by Nektar, '(theme from) Death Wish' by Herbie Hancock, and 'Feel Good' by Fancy (whose instrumental bridge was used on many '80s rap samples)... kind of a mish-mosh, eh? Perhaps the worst offender of 1974 was 'The Night Chicago Died' by Paper Lace... P.U.!!!... recommend you watch YouTuber Todd In the Shadows' take on this tune; 'You're Having My Baby' by Paul Anka is a close second in disgraceful tunes. This year we hear perhaps the first true Disco singles, including 'The Hustle' by Van McCoy, 'Pick Up the Pieces' by the Average White Band, 'Machine Gun' by the Commodores, and 'TSOP' by MFSB. Also, more proto-Punk and just overall weirdness by the likes of the New York Dolls, Sparks, and the Residents. I could go on and on... it's like the malaise President Jimmy Carter spoke about later in the decade kinda starts here, particularly with the economy (first real recession since late 1950s) and politics (see: Nixon, Richard... Watergate). The year also spawns some of the most ridiculous fashion of the era, as well as very long hair for mainstream men and mustaches... lots of mustaches, which men really hadn't worn stylishly since the late 1940s (even then they were very thin... see Walt Disney). Okay out of space... enjoy!

Sound of Freedom
Excerpts:
As for the film itself, critics have described it as a pretty standard “principled man goes rogue” procedural, as Caviezel’s Ballard, burnt out after years of catching online pedophiles, cuts ties with the government so that he can rescue a kidnapped girl from Colombian revolutionaries.
.
Angel Studios itself claims that “Seeing the film is the first step in spreading awareness about child trafficking,” calling it part of “a historical movement to promote stories that amplify light.” A key part of the movie’s messaging centers on positioning the very act of seeing it as a radical and moral act; anything that then gets in the way of that process—even if it’s just a busted sound system—presumably becomes immoral in response.
.
It is worth noting, though, that a percentage of those sales are the product of Angel Studios’ “Pay It Forward” program, which allows donors to send the company money to essentially comp tickets for movie-goers who can’t afford it, in theory … It’s not clear how much of the movie’s subsequent $100 million box office take has come from people making these donations, but if the proportions have held steady, it’s a decent chunk of change
Comments:
Nilus: I see a lot of trolling by just right wing haters saying “The left just can’t handle how well this movie is doing” while literally ignoring the fact that the damn movie has a program where large conservative groups can buy out tickets and give them away free.   You can literally go online and get a free ticket for this shitty movie and watch it in an empty theater.
ArgieBargie: This fascist propaganda and piece of shit movie is the cinematic equivalent of “Moms For Liberty.” It’s astroturf bullshit.
Toshe21: Of course this Communist scum bag called ArgieBargie hates Sound of Freedom. He doesn’t like the realities of child trafficking being exposed to the masses. I am shocked, I tell you, shocked!
Killa K: What “realities” does the film expose? It’s based on a true story that was widely reported in the media when it originally happened, and most of the film takes place in Central and South America, a place that the target audience has little-to-no sympathy for when they come to the States to seek asylum.
MrPuzzles: Except it isn’t. There’s technically nothing wrong with the film. It’s based on facts, it tells its story competently, and it doesn’t beat you over the head with it. That’s really all you can expect out of a dramatized biopic. And, hell, there really isn’t even any kind of hard right message behind it either. It doesn’t even meet the basic definition of a propaganda film. It’s just the circumstances surrounding, and the sort of people selling the film. This film is now a hardline conservative symbol. It’s really no different than when the Nazis took the swastika as their own and basically ruined it forever. Cultural and factual appropriation is, after all, a time-honored fascist tradition. If anything, it really sucks that hundreds of people who likely worked hard on this now have to completely distance themselves from it. I know for a fact if I made something that fucking Trump claimed as his own, I wouldn’t be putting that shit on my resume.
