Once upon a time, the sight of another Mandalorian would have brought him joy unlike any other. But once upon time, there was a child at his hip and a quest in his heart, and right now...

Right now, all there is is uncertain purpose.

The Mandalorian is ready to turn away and make himself small, waiting for his informant to arrive-- there are weapons made of beskar being shipped out of a secret, former Imperial smelter, and said informant is an employee Koska Reeves had located-- but something catches his eye before he can do it.

This new Mandalorian has what looks to be an unactivated laser sword at their hip, and he finds himself unable to look away quick enough to keep them from noticing he’s staring.

His helm tilts up, visor meeting theirs for all a moment, before he nods once in an attempt to keep the peace. He’s not looking to start anything. He doesn’t want to start anything, only to finish this assignment and leave.

But the deactivated Darksabre at his own hip is obvious. It’s hard not to be curious.

The galaxy changed as the years passed, but as much as things changed, they stayed the same. The Dark and the Light grew and fell, an eternal dance that Melyn had grown used to. The Dark rose and so did the Light to quell it; the Light rose and so did the Dark to conquer it.

Watching from the outside made it all seem so simple. Of course, she wasn’t truly on the outside - when she was needed, she would be there to assist - but, for the most part, she watched; one with the Force, and at peace.

Until-- - -

Something familiar. A deeper darkness; one that she had experienced before, intimately. She hoped that she was mistaken but, deep down, she knew that she was not. And so, here she was.

“I come with a warning.” She spoke, her gaze on the other. “You would do well to heed it.”

THE MEETING WAS SUDDEN,   called only during one of the brief moments when Anakin was on Coruscant between missions. Slightly concerned as ever when he’s summoned by a member of the Council. Though this time it’s just a single council-member and not the body as a whole, which makes him feel somewhat less uneasy. 

“ you wished to speak to me? ”   he asks upon arriving, attempting to keep his face neutral and curious, rather than to relay any of the underlying anxiety he feels when summoned. 

Usually it’s just something about a mission. But each time, he fears that his secrets might have been found out, that they wish to talk to him about his behaviour and frequent, flagrant displays of emotion on the battlefield. Obi-Wan has certainly talked to him enough about that, enough that Anakin has gotten quite good at keeping it hidden. 

At least, he hopes he’s gotten good at that.

After all, Padmé Amidala was a long time friend of the Jedi. “It doesn’t really matter what you do to me, because I’ve already alerted the Jedi Temple to your presence. Whoever they’ve sent is already on their way, likely Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, so it all depends now. Do you want to survive tonight? Because if you do, you should put the weapon down, and simply surrender. You’ll be taken prisoner, and no harm will come to you. If you choose to fight, he’ll win.”

     “Where are my companions?”  She loathed the way her voice pitched higher, almost breathless, at the end of her question, her throat dry and aching, eyes stinging with tears that she could not afford to spill, and would not.    It had been days since she’d last seen any face other than his, had seen anything other than the swallowing, deafening darkness and now even the ambient light of the room seemed blinding.  Her jaw was set, stubborn, defiant, her fingers clenched tight into blood stained palms, wrists aching, burning with the weight of the heavy cuffs and chains.   “What have you done with them?”   There were questions, more questions, a thousand other questions -- what did he want from her, why was she here, where was here, what was the point of it all -- but she would not allow her focus to detract from the concern that lingered first and foremost in her thoughts, the fate of her companions, her handmaidens, the security team that had been traveling with her when they had been attacked, before she had been bound and dragged away to this place.

          perhaps he knew, perhaps it was all simply a trap, but in the moment, she couldn’t bring herself to care.  something had gone right.

          her lungs burned as she sucked in air, the thready thrum of her heart the only true indication at the panic running beneath her skin.  anger and ice were her shield now, and her grip on her presence of mind could provide the next step.

         ❝  i think you should come with me, Xylek.  ❞         it’s sour on her tongue, this victory, but however narrow, she’d use it.
