ABT Don Quixote Thoughts
Friday, March 1st 2022
Kitri/Dulcinea: Skylar Brandt Basilio: Herman Cornejo Mercedes/Queen of the Dryads: Cassanda Trenary Espada: Gabe Stone Shayer
1. Skylar Brandt is the best ballerina at ABT for sure.  Her Kitri was phenomenal, captivating and drawing you in from her very first step into open fourth with the fan flick to the very last bow in front of the curtain.  Her technique was flawless, whenever she would do a developee or grand battement to the side, her foot/leg was so turned out you could almost see the bottom of her pointe shoe and it was so high even with her hips staying completely square.  I have absolutely no idea how she did it, but it was stunning.  The act I variation had perfect energy; her Kitri jump isn’t as high or flexible as I expected from her, but it’ll come with time!  The line of pirouettes, holy shit.  They were fast but on music, perfect fifth into a perfect passe every single time and she needs to give a master class on spotting lol.  You could tell she was a bit tired in act III, but again that stamina will come.  I love the choreography where it’s passe passe into saut de chat into of passe passe bourree and she flew in her saut de chats!  In this version they do echappees into attitude turn and she did those really well; a lot of the time the ballerina struggles to stay on the music in that moment, but she hit it every single time.  Her fouettes were all right, not awful but not a stand out part of the performance.  She did them, accomplished them, and looked good.  In this version, they cut out the final diagonal of piques which bummed me out because she would have done them SO WELL, but oh well.
NOW FOR HER DULCINEA.  HOLY SHIT.  Her control, her perfect positioning, her hops en pointe where her foot came perfectly to her knee during the petit battements, her pique manege, everything was PERFECT.  I could watch that variation alone over and over; honestly for me it was the stand out part of the performance.  I thought this would be the part of the performance that would be the least awesome, but honestly it was my favorite part.
2. Before the performance started, Christine Shevchenko (born in Ukraine) came out and spoke a little bit about her life in Ukraine and about Odessa and dedicated the performance to Ukraine.  After she spoke, we all stood while the orchestra played the Ukrainian national anthem.  It was very emotional and a beautiful show of support to the country.
3. Now for the other dancers:
Herman Cornejo: time to retire.  His jumps are low and while he did well in the fake suicide scene, other than that I was bored.  He definitely got better as the show went on, but honestly if I never see him again, then cool.
Gabe Stone Shayer (Espada): OMG.  He was the stand out man in the performance.  Normally Espada and the toreadors are kind of boring...not Gabe.  He needs to be promoted to principal and dance Basilio IMMEDIATELY.
Cassandra Trenary (Mercedes/Queen of the Dryads): meh.  I don’t know why she’s a principal.  I don’t really have anything to say about her.
Kanon Kimura (Amour/Cupid): yes yes yes yes yes YES.  If Obraztsova is the gold standard for this role, Kanon is the platinum standard.  She was so light and quick and airy and playful, I can’t pick one thing to write about because everything was flawless.  In the coda, she did fall, but got right back up and continued and it didn’t matter at all.  I hope to see more and more of her!
Garegin Pogossian (Gypsy Couple): incredible.  Again, normally this part is insanely boring to me, but he had such energy and his jumps were huge (for an American dancer).  I hope he continues to gain more roles as well.
All in all, it was a fantastic performance that I didn’t want to end.  You know a performance is good when it doesn’t feel like 3 hours went by!  Here are some videos and pictures from the curtain calls!
