Comments on “Shetland” season 7 now it’s full aired
Here be spoilers
So first of all, the things I liked:-
- above all: the Lloyd subplot and it’s resolution and why Jimmy left. That was powerful as fuck, and beautiful, and perfect to Jimmy’s character, and a gorgeous bit of subversion for a cop show. He left the police on his own terms, and in order to save an innocent (and awesome!) Black man from the US criminal justice system and general injustice. I loved it, and their scene in the cell was magnificent. <3 I can forgive a lot that I didn’t like about the season for this, because it was the best possible way that Jimmy - whose compassion and recognition of the humanity of others has always been one of the best things about him - to exit the police and the show. Choosing what’s right above what’s legal. Also I really, really liked Lloyd. <3 I hope he has a fantastic life in Norway, or wherever he chooses to settle.
- the scenery continued glorious, obviously.
- Tosh’s character development, and her being left in charge. <3 <3 <3
- Sandy getting to be competent! Billy getting a bit more to do!
- Rhona coming back. <3
- the hugs!
- the wee wallet thief. <3
- by the end of the series I really did care about Connor’s family.
- that first scene between Jimmy and Duncan was good.
Things I did not like:-
- ugh, Meg. I didn’t like her (she came across as desperately callous at times, especially, in wild contrast not just to Jimmy but to most other characters), I didn’t like how she was written, I didn’t like that we never really learned anything about her interests, and above all I hated the Designated Heterosexual Romanceness of it all. I never got the impression that she and Jimmy were particularly into each other, let alone massively in love. The final scene was embarrassingly poorly-written and neither actor seemed that convinced by what they were saying. And no I really am not saying that just as a Jimmy/Duncan shipper! I knew a het romance ending was likely, I just wanted some actual fricking care and attention given to it being a good and convincing romance with actual things in common and chemistry. It’s not like Jimmy’s not had at least some with potential female romantic partners before! Asha especially. That Meg got the family theme music that’s only been used up to now for Cassie and Duncan after, what, 3 extremely lacklustre dates, was just insulting.
- and honestly, would it have been so bad if Jimmy had left the profession and had one final scene with Cassie at the end, bookending the show? Het romance is not the definition of a happy ending or of emotional resolution.
- almost no Duncan, and almost no Cassie. I know there were practical reasons for this (Mark getting double-booked due to the pandemic timing changes; Erin having mostly left acting as a profession). But they both could have been *mentioned* far far more. Jimmy’s family has always been one of the best and most interesting things about him. Cassie was the most important person in his life prior to this season, and Duncan his best friend and someone he was willing to go to prison for in season 6. Why didn’t we get at least Jimmy’s end of a phone call to Duncan to reassure him after the caravan explosion? Why didn’t the two scenes with Cassie have more emotional content? UGH.
- so little Cassie and the total misfiring of the Meg arc meant that well-written female characters were in frustratingly short supply this season, Tosh and Connor’s mother aside. So much more could have been done with Connor’s sister and her wee goth friend, e.g..
- just generally, Duncan was done dirty. After all his growth and changing for the better, that’s how the show leaves him?! After that beautiful arc that resolved in season 5? I mean life isn’t always fair, nor does fiction have to be, but... it feels like he’d redeemed himself and then got wildly punished anyway. And then just ignored.
- the eco-terrorism plot was frustrating in the extreme.
- so much more could have been made of the Shetland folklore angle of things and I really hoped it would be.

Note
I’ve seen your discussions on non-reveal Cleves costumes lately and how some of the cruise Cleves costumes were built as non-reveals, and I have a clarification question: do you know who had reveal costumes vs. who didn’t especially among the principal Cleves costume (knowing the black and silver Cleves costumes are non-reveals already). Thanks, and loving the blog!
Hey! Yes I do! So some of the casts still use the open jacket style, but as far as the closed jacket style goes.... Has a reveal: - UK production principals - UK production alts with red Cleves costumes - US production principals + understudies Does not have a reveal: - Cruise principals or alts - Black or silver swings
There have been two scenarios where one member of a cast has reveal and one does not: - In the 2019-2021 WE cast, Lexi McIntosh received a closed reveal style for the 2020 reopening. However, Cherelle Jay and Collette Guitart were still in alt costumes, so they continued to use the usual open jacket. - In the current UKT cast, both the original principal (Aiesha Naomi Pease) and the alt (Grace Melville) received the closed jacket reveal style. However, Aiesha departed the show, and Jessica Niles replaced her. Jessica has been wearing her old Breakaway 2.0 costume with an open jacket.
So... - Lexi McIntosh, Dionne Ward-Anderson, Aiesha Naomi Pease, Paisley Billings, Grace Melville, Brittney Mack, Nicole Kyoung-Mi Lambert, Keirsten Hodgens, Olivia Donalson, Kelly Denice Taylor, and Cassie Silva have a reveal - Kennedy Carstens, Channing Weir, Sasha Renae Brown, Kayla McSorley, Natalie Pilkington (black), Rachel Rawlinson, Esme Rothero, and Harriet Caplan-Dean do not have a reveal
Hope that helps!

Shetland season 7 (eps 1-3) observations. Spoilerific, including mildly spoilerific for ep 4 which we haven’t had yet.
Behind the cut for spoiler reasons.
- insufficient Duncan, and very insufficient Cassie.
- this is not a particularly compelling central mystery, awesome as the acting is. I’m fed up with the organised crime element, I’m fed up with Shetland being treated as an absolute hotbed of Everything Bad. It just... the first few seasons portrayed the horrible stuff happening as an aberration and that is so much better and more interesting.
- it is good to see Sandy being a bit competent at last.
- I am assuming that Tosh will be fine, thank God. But also, in that case... what’s the point of that cliffhanger? Ugh. Cheap.
- if they break Tosh and Donnie up I will riot. They are both wonderful and deserve the world and they are by far the best canon romantic relationship in the show.
- on which note.
- UGH.
- look if they really want Jimmy to end up in a happy het relationship for Douglas Henshall leaving, then... fair, I guess. This is a thing that happens, and I wasn’t really expecting that they’d go canon Jimmy/Duncan. But they couldn’t in that case put more effort into said het relationship than this?!! Jimmy and Meg have absolutely no discernable chemistry, we’ve not seen them at any point bonding as friends before attempting to date. They’re awkward with each other without seeming actually attracted to each other. The kiss was... weird. And they don’t *smile* with each other. Duncan made Jimmy smile and laugh and obviously feel safe and cherished on the day of his beloved mum’s funeral. That’s what you want for a love interest for the main character, if you want to give them a happy ending. It’s a bit of a whopping difference! At the very least, even without a romantic relationship between the two men, centering their friendship has been a really good emotional choice up to now and I’m annoyed that they’ve stopped that.
- I mean on the upside, I guess, whatever they do and however much they force Jimmy and Meg together and ignore Duncan, they are simply not going to sell the audience on the concept of Meg supplanting Duncan as the second most important person in Jimmy’s life after Cassie. Even if they outright say it, no one’s going to buy that, I think, however heterosexist.
- no Cassie at all in the show so far is a massive loss, even more in some ways than the mostly-gone Duncan. And unlike Duncan she’s not in Aberdeen!! I guess Erin Armstrong was very busy? But we’ve not even seen Cassie’s emotional reaction to a) both her dads being arrested, b) one go to prison, c) the other being suspended, d) and come back to Shetland and resume his work. All while she’s living with one of his employees. Oh and also she lost her grandfather during that time too. I mean, really? Nothing? Nothing even about how she’s coped with all of this? Even without Erin there, could we not at least have a conversation between Jimmy and Alex about how she’s doing? Cassie’s relationship with Jimmy and her gradually starting to trust and have a proper relationship with Duncan too has been one of the joys of the show from day one. She’s absolutely key! Grrr.
- the central mystery of the show wasn’t great in season 6 either, but at least in 6 we had the Duncan & Donna stuff. This one is just... not enough. It feels like they’re repeating earlier themes and beats. (Lost child, frantic mother, flawed and damaged father; that’s 5 and 6 rolled together, and both did it far better.)
- I’ll watch to the end of the show, obviously, but as far as I’m concerned this just isn’t canon, especially not relevant to all the fanfic! Partner and I were noting earlier that if this had been the standard of season 1 we’d probably not have become fans. Which is a massive shame, especially as this is Douglas’s last season.
- after watching last night I then showed Partner Endeavour 1.3 (”Rocket”), which was the one episode they’d not seen yet. They loved it, even though it’s hardly the best of that show. And ooof the contrast in quality was honestly a bit appalling. And in its first four seasons I’d say Shetland absolutely is on a par with Endeavour. I mean, I can’t say that Endeavour series 8 was the best thing ever either, but it was so very much better than Shetland 7 that it’s a bit embarrassing.
- if Endeavour 9 disappoints like this I’ll be frankly devastated. But I will also be surprised.
- just, ugh, frankly.
- so, yeah. Shetland continues to have great acting and scenery and good individual moments, but the writing and direction this season are really really not there, at least not yet. I hope the last few episodes redeem it somewhat. And at least we hopefully get Rhona back next week, and that should help matters. :-)
