My Favorite New Manga Reads of 2023

For the past few years on twitter, I've made threads of some of my favorite manga and light novel reads from the past year. This year, I decided I would move it over to two tumblr posts.

After the cut are some of my favorite titles that I picked up for the first time in 2023.

Talk to My Back, Yamada Murasaki

I like to pick up something a little more unusual at least once a year and so at the beginning of this year, I picked up this 1980s alt-manga title about the life of a Tokyo housewife played out in short vignettes. It's a frustrating read because of how real it feels and how much it feels like things haven't changed as much in the last 40 years as I'd like, but it's all the more fascinating for it. The essay at the end discussing Yamada Murasaki's work and placing it in context was a nice bonus too.

When a Cat Faces West, Yuki Urushibara

I love Yuki Urushibara's Mushishi (slow though I have been to actually finish it), so when Kodansha announced a license for Urushibara's much shorter series, I was there for it. It has a cool concept - there are areas of "flow" that will pop up out of nowhere and shift people and places out of time and space and one guy has tasked himself with helping people fix issues caused by it - but mostly it feels like Mushishi but set in the present day. I love a series that's just vibes all the way down.

Skip and Loafer, Misaki Takamatsu

I was absolutely smitten with the Skip and Loafer anime, so when it ended with what felt like a pretty definitive "we are not making a second season of this" final episode, I started the manga. A high school slice of life series lives by its characters and Mitsumi is the more adorable dork ever. The other characters are equally delightful, even when I don't necessarily like them, and I'm so eager to dive deeper into their lives.

Associate Professor Akira Takatsuki's Conjecture (light novel), Mikage Sawamura

This series feels a bit like what you'd get if you crossed The Case Files of Jeweler Richard and The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window: a college student with a supernatural ability to hear lies that alienates him from everyone meets a folklore professor with a mysterious past fascinated by mysteries, and together they investigate possibly-supernatural events. It's a bit silly, but the relationship between the leads is interesting and there's a lot of fun urban legends in the mix. There's also a manga adaptation that I haven't yet picked up, but maybe one day...

March Comes in Like a Lion, Chica Umino

I was curious about this one from the second Denpa announced the license just because of how much I'd heard about the series for years now, and it did not disappoint. I love a good story about a depressed and lonely teenage boy sublimating his feelings into an obsession with a uniquely Japanese pastime, especially when there's so many people around him wanting to help him stop being alone. Now I just wish that the release wasn't quite as slow as it has been, even if I know the many reasons why...though at least I still have the anime to rewatch while I wait.

Don't Call It Mystery, Yumi Tamura

After reading Basara and Wild Com, I was eager to get my hands on a newer series by Yumi Tamura, and the fact that it's a modern-day non-fantasy series made it all the more interesting. Totonou's incessant observations about the things going on around him are delightful, especially when they lead him straight into all kinds of dangers or even just leave everyone around him wishing he'd stop talking for about five seconds. I just want to pat him on the head and ask him to make me some curry.

After the Rain, Jun Mayuzuki

I got a card for the Japan Foundation's ebook library not too long ago, which has been great for picking up a lot of books that aren't available in my local library's collection, including this series. I had heard about it but was a bit hesitant because it's about a teenage girl who gets a crush on her much older boss...but hey, why not give it a try from the library? I'm glad I did because there was such a sweet relationship between them that ultimately helped them both out of the ruts they were in with their personal lives and dreams.

River's Edge, Kyoko Okazaki

I still can't decide if I actually enjoy Kyoko Okazaki's work or not, but I got a little closer to it with River's Edge. It's a harsh story about disaffected teenagers who find a dead body, but somehow it feels less depressing than the other works of hers I've read because they're teenagers and there's still the possibility that they can escape the lives that are dragging them down. I will say this - Okazaki's stories are never boring, whether I enjoy them or not.

Her, Tomoko Yamashita

I got a little overambitious this year and ordered the Italian release of a Tomoko Yamashita title I've been wanting to read for years. Can I read Italian? No. Did I think maybe I could figure it out kinda okay because I've studied French and Spanish? Yes. Did I end up reading everything through a translation app? Also yes. But this collection of interconnected stories about women and relationships was excellent despite the language barrier. I was thrilled to finally see the context for the kiss between a younger woman and an elderly woman that I so admired in Yamashita's 15th anniversary artbook, and its story was a touching exploration of what "normal" means. I would love to see this in English, but unfortunately I can't see it getting picked up.

Glitch, Shima Shinya

I was thrilled that Yen Press decided to pick up another title from Shima Shinya after Lost Lad London, and Glitch has been well worth my time. While it is a fantasy story about a town full of glitches in reality that I'm excited to see play out fully, what really caught my eye is the sheer amount of diversity in the characters - one of the leads is nonbinary, there are mixed race characters, there's a lesbian couple, etc. It's all part of the story but not in a didactic way, which I appreciate immensely. Shinya's art also makes me so happy, and I hope Yen continues to get more of their work.

Lilies and Voices Born Upon the Wind, Renmei

Speaking of diversity in characters, I enjoyed this series not only because it was a nice yuri with a motorcycle lesbian (always a bonus in my book, the motorcycle) but because it had some really thoughtful discussion of asexuality in multiple forms. I wish I could've gotten one of the printed copies that were available for purchase at one con, but alas.

Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, Hiromi Sato & Kamome Shirahama

Did we really need a cooking series spinoff of Witch Hat Atelier? Probably not. Am I glad we got it in English anyway? Absolutely. This is basically an Olruggio/Qifrey slowburn domestic au fanfic and I adore it. And I love that they keep up the conceit about magical ingredients in each chapter's recipe, even though they are legit recipes you can actually make with the real ingredients recommended as substitutions. What Did You Eat Yesterday? but with witches, clearly an ideal combination.

Scribbles, Kaoru Mori

I am not actually a diehard fan of Kaoru Mori's work - I drifted away from A Bride's Story when I ran out of volumes at the library - but I do unabashedly adore her art. Scribbles is just perfect for me with its pages from her sketchbooks and her commentary about things like the ideal skirt tightness. I bought this in hardcover and all and will continue to get the other volumes in hardcover even though I almost always get Yen Press titles digitally because it's so much cheaper that way, that's how much I like it.

Innocent, Shin'ichi Sakamoto

I've had my eye on Shin'ichi Sakamoto's work for a while because I saw a bunch of panels from Innocent on here and fell in love with the art. What I did not expect was that the violently erotic story about a French executioner would actually get an English license. It's gorgeous and violent and weird and I am so here for it. Now, if I could just be sure that Dark Horse actually plans on releasing the whole thing...

Barbarities, Tsuta Suzuki

Much like with Innocent, I saw panels from Barbarities on here ages ago and wished I could read it without much hope, given the lack of other licenses for Tsuta Suzuki's bl since SuBLime's relicense of A Strange & Mystifying Story ages ago. But thankfully I am getting to read this nebulously historical drama with all of its social machinations and pretty men getting flustered by other flirtatious pretty men. And such nice clothes!

A Home Far Away, Teki Yatsuda

Kuma really gets some stellar licenses and A Home Far Away was especially good. Set in 1990s America, it reminded me of nothing so much as My Own Private Idaho crossed with Banana Fish and made me weep absolute buckets in the end. I don't think it's for everyone, but if you were ever an aficionado of depressing 90s queer cinema like I once was, this might be one for you.

À vos cotés [Tonari ni], Basso

I was shocked when the announcement for the French release of this title crossed my twitter timeline earlier this year - France has even less by Natsume Ono than the US does, but one of their publishers managed to get one of her actual bl titles published under her bl penname? So naturally, I had to get it. It's super sweet, about a young man who likes to take photos of horses at a racetrack who meets a much older man, and I swear reading it was just like reading her non-bl work only this time the two characters actually got to say their feelings out loud. This would be a perfect addition to several mainstream US publishers' bl lineup, and I would be the first in line to buy it if they did license it in English.

Dear, My God, Nemui Asada

More by Nemui Asada in English! I love Asada's work for its unique storylines and this one didn't disappoint, with a story about a priest having sex with a cult member to help save him and another story about a guy who ends up with a talking plant. It's a bit disappointing that it's only available on futekiya - when will we get some of these titles in print already?

Ikigami & Donor, Hiko Yamanaka

Hiko Yamanaka is another one whose work is always a bit outside the mold, and Ikigami & Donor is an interesting sci-fi bl about powerful "living gods" who have tremendous abilities but can't heal from injuries without blood, bodily fluids, or tissues from one specific donor. It's a fascinating concept and the way the relationship between one ikigami and his donor played out made for an interesting story. I hope to see more from Yamanaka one day.

Different AU's: I can do all diffrent types! Pirate, mafia, hybrid, fantasy, royalty, mermaid, soulmates, mall workers, vampires, ghosts, ect. Or if you have your own AU and would like me to do somthing with it I can tolltally do that to.

Omegaverse: I know not everyone likes this trope but i'm a absaloute sucker for it. I can do Alpha, Beta, or Omega for charecters or Reader. I do write heats but not in a sexual way, i personally write them kinda like a human period but replace the blood with increased body tempetures.

Any Gender: I am personally genderfluid and AFAB so those are the two that I would have the most experience with. However if you want me to do somthing like a trans reader or AMAB reader than I can try my best. Don't be afraid to make it specific to you, everone is diffrent and I understand trying to look for something that fits you more than the stereotypes.

Crossovers: I don't see a lot of creators in any fandom doing crossovers a lot. I see like *Insert charecter* x reader with *insert other character* personality but not really crossovers. So feel free to request a crossover with a diffrent show.

Any skin color: I love having variety in my writing so I will do any skin colors. I can do basic skin colors, from pale peach to dark brown. I can also do exstream versions like skin that is nearly paper white from how pale it is or skin that us nearly space black from how dark it is. I can also do unnatural skin colors, like Mina!

Alterhuman Reader: Ok so I see absaloutly no alterhuman reader fanfics out there so i'm here to change that. I'm not personally a alterhuman but I do have a few freinds that are. If you want me to do a specific one instead of basic I can also do that. Like instead of a dragon kin I can do a dragon kin with space wing and starts eyes with claws that glow in the dark ect.

Body Marks: I personally have stretch marks, moles, freckles, and odd placed birthmarks so I can do any of these or others if you would like. If you are specifically extra self-conscious of your body marks than I can add extra levels of love to specific part if you would like :)

Abuse: I will not do the character inflicting pain on the reader or the reader inflicting pain on the charecter. I can do mentions of past abuse, such as a charecter or reader flinching at touch or loud noise.

Cheating: character doing it to reader or reader doing it to character is just a big no. I never understood cheating, if you don't love somone just break up with them. If you can't do it for safety reson than find a support system to protect you in dangerous situations.

Misscarage: I have lost three sibling to this and I still cry at night thinking of them, please don't ask me to do anything to do with this subject. If you do I will give you 1 warning and then I'm blocking you.

Abortion: I don't really have a side here but I don't like the though of writing it as it makes me uncomfortable.

Vi que haces peticiónes de la leyenda de korra y quería saber si podrías hacer un trabajo del equipo avatar de korra con un lector que es algo muy similar a una giesha japonesa, osea una mujer que entretiene a personas en fiestas o banquetes y que no debería ser confundida con una prostituta(muchos confunden a las geishas con oirans).

Geisha: Joven japonesa que se dedica a entretener y hacer compañía a los hombres bailando, cantando, recitando poesía, sirviendo el té, etc.; va ataviada con el traje tradicional japonés.

Korra

Lo más probable es que te haya conocido duránte el Libro 2, en la junta en honor a Unalaq y la tribu agua del norte. Al ser un evento relativamente importante también hay entretenimiento especializado, por lo que tú y algunas chicas de tu casa fueron contratadas para hacer la reunión un poco menos tensa. Korra lo encontró entrañable incluso si no tenía idea de lo que era una Geisha.

En algún punto después del banquete, le ganó la curiosidad y decídio ir a preguntarte directamente al respecto. Tu estabas sorprendida por decir lo menos ¡El avatar te estaba hablando! Por lo que si bien la conversación y explicacion fluyó bien, eras un manojo de nervios constante.

Mientras las le explicas a Korra se le ilumina la cara un poco más, es interesante como algo aparentemente simple en realidad lleva años de entendimiento, y ella respeta mucho eso.

Supongamos que te quedas en ciudad república para poder mejorar tus habilidades independientemente, ten por seguro que Korra te recibe con los brazos abiertos y con mucho apoyo moral.

Llendo directamente a la etapa de citas, korra es alguien que, como dije, no solo apoya tu trabajo, sino que ve todo el esfuerzo y entrenamiento detrás, no eres lista, sino que puedes hacer cosas que ella solo podría soñar ¿Tocas un instrumento?¿Bailas?¿Poesía?¿CANTAS?¿CANTARIAS PARA ELLA?

Cómo de vez en cuando va a Eventos importantes, creo que te alentaría a ir con ella y de paso promocionar tus servicios, si accedes ella se queda cerca para jugar a lo seguro. Uno nunca sabe.

Y si decides no hacerlo, probablemente ella igualmente hablé un poco sobre eso(especialmente si con quién habla tiene dinero).

Ahora, en caso de que alguien se confunda con lo que haces(como el ejemplo de la Oirán) ella ya está ahí para evitar cualquier avance, si es algo inocente (ignorancia) solo dará una advertencia, pero si es un avance físico importante, lo siento amigo, dile adiós a tus dientes.

Genuinamente ofendida de como alguien puede confundirte con algo así(sin ofender).

Resumidamente, lo encuentra muy entrañable y sobre todo admirable, ella respeta el trabajo duro y te mereces todo el respeto (y amor) del mundo para ella.

Asami

Ella va a juntas seguido, por lo que es de esperar que haya entretenimiento en esas juntas, sobretodo si se trata de Varrik por ejemplo.

Pero se sorprendió gratamente cuando realizaste tu acto(bailes), se esperaba algo mucho más "Varrik" por lo que fue un respiro de aire fresco.

Muy probablemente investigo sobre las geishas después de eso y queda más interesada al respecto, quiere saber más de forma práctica. Así que se asegura de decirle de forma sutil a Varrik de que el entrenamiento con Geishas sería apropiado para el futuro, y el acepta.

Las siguientes veces que eres contratada para las reuniones, tu principal actividad es entablar conversación con Asami, y siendo ambas mujeres cultas e inteligentes, no es difícil en lo absoluto.

Está encantada con esto, eres alguien con un conocimientos general por arriba de lo común, lo que hace que su interés inicial se haga cada vez más grande mientras más veces se ven la una a la otra.

Ya cuando empiezan una relación, como dije, ella investiga más sobre la profesión y va resolviendo sus dudas, puede que te pregunté, pero al mismo tiempo quiere aprenderlo por ella misma.

Definitivamente disfruta mucho las charlas que tiene contigo, pero si eligiera otra actividad para hacer contigo, sería escucharte tocar el Shaimen, especialmente cuando está estresada(Barrik tiene la culpa en la mayoría de casos).

Probablemente no pueda ir a todos tus eventos, por lo que te preguntaria si quisieras tener algo así como un guardaespaldas en caso de que suegra algo(incluso pedirle a Bolin o Mako que estén ahí un rato como favor), y si dices que no, querrá que le actualices de vez en cuando para estar tranquila.

Si llegara a pasar que alguien te confunde mientras ella está cerca, lo más probable es que lo fulmine con la mirada antes de simplemente irse contigo. No tolera esa mierda.

Es la mejor opción si quieres aprovechar todos tus conocimientos y habilidades artísticas, ella es tu fan número uno y en eventos tu propia guardia personal.

Mako

Se conocieron mediante Wu, obviamente iba a tener entretenimiento costoso y extravagante, pero para parecer un poco más """sofisticado"" contrato a todas las geishas de tu casa. Fue una gran oportunidad que no podían desaprovechar.

Mako, siendo Mako, si bien se mantuvo al tanto de Wu, se quedó pegado al único entretenimiento que REALMENTE le llamaba la atención. No tiene ni idea de lo que es una Geisha, pero definitivamente le gusta mucho más sus actos que los que trajo Wu, y te das cuenta de inmediato y le das plática (y más tarde a Wu también, que por cierto, sigue sin pronunciar "Geisha" apropiadamente).

Apartir de ahí se te pega como pegamento por lo antes mencionado cada vez que van a alguno evento, lo que desemboca en su actual relación.

Cómo habrás podido notar, Mako lo encuentra relajante en comparación a todos los actos que el propio Wu se hace, es mucho más entretenido para el en esos momentos, aunque sea, una charla normal o simplemente escuchar algo de música(el Shaimen especialmente), incluso si está de un especial bien humor puede que se te una para bailar.

Si antes no sabía lo que era una Geisha, menos sabía lo que eran las Oirán, por lo que las primeras veces que te confunden con una, el piensa que es parte de una jerarquía de las geishas, aparte de que solo lo ignoras, por lo que hace lo mismo.

Eso hasta que un invitado trata de acercarse demaciado y las demás geishas se le saltan encima y lo echan prácticamente a patadas, entonces le explican más detalladamente el trabajo de una Geisha y una Oirán, queda vas confundido ¿Quien sería tan estúpido para confundirte de esa manera?¡Lo único que tienen en común es el maquillaje blanco!¡No tiene sentido!.

Apartir de ahí espera tener a Mako cerca casi siempre, no es por qué crea que no te puedas cuidar o que las otras geishas no podrían hacerlo, pero entiende, le importas mucho y no quiere que pases un mal rato por algún decerebrado.

Igual mantiene cierta distancia si se lo pides, es tu trabajo después de todo, no quiere meterte en problemas con tu maestra.

Le gusta verte preparar el maquillaje, los peinados que usas y piensa que los Kimonos son mucho mas complejos de lo que parecen( y PESADOS), admira la dedicación que le das a tu trabajo, lo compara con lo que es ser detective para el(sip, así de importante).

En general respeta mucho tu profesión y lo apoya al 100%, solo asegúrate de cuidarte y el está tranquilo 👍 y si no el mismo pateara algúnos traseros.

Bolin

Sinceramente creo que se conocieron cuando aún estabas entrenando para ser una Geisha, sería el único que si sabe lo que es desde hace tiempo, te hacía muchas preguntas ¿Porque tu cara está tan blanca?¿Siquiera comes?¿De dónde es esa ropa?¿De dónde vienes?¿Eres una princesa o algo así(pareces una)?¿Serías su amiga?etc..

No podías pasar mucho tiempo con él porque el entrenamiento es muy demandante, pero siempre fue muy amigable contigo, no tenías como decirle que no, por lo que tus pocos días libres tu y Bolin salían a pasear por ciudad república, simplemente hacer cosas de su edad, ir a los torneos pro-control, tomar algo de Te, etc.

Realmente te hace sentir mejor contigo misma gracias a esos pequeños momentos, obviamente ser Geisha era lo que querías, pero no era fácil.

¡Afortunadamente Bolin esta ahí para darte apoyo moral! Una vez trato de meterse en la casa okiwa para darte ánimo y lo sacaron a patadas, aprendio la lección no te preocupes.

Cuando FINALMENTE eres una Geisha oficial, espera que Bolin lo celebre contigo como si fuera un logro de ambos, sabe muy bien lo mucho que significa ese título para ti así que se alegro un montón.

Lamentablemente también causó que tú ya limitado tiempo libre fuera aún más escaso, tenías que aprender en el campo, por lo que ibas constantemente a fiestas y eventos que te dejaban exhausta.

Afortunadamente Bolin, aunque un poco triste, lo entendio completamente, trabaste muy duro para esto y no quiere que lo pierdas por su culpa.

Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones te escapas de las tareas y vas a hacer cosas como verlo en sus entrenamientos de pro-control, lo que parece darle un subidon de energía altísimo, si no puedes asistir sueñes pedir que pongan la radio para escuchar el partido y al día siguiente lo felicitas por ganar o lo consuelas por perder. Antes de que te des cuenta si relación aparentemente platónica paso a romántica, no saben cómo pasó, pero no sé qué quejan.

En cuanto a ti trabajo, Bolin es EL MEJOR al respecto, incluso puede aprender a maquillarte y así 1. Pasar más tiempo juntos y 2. echarte una mano, incluso hace algunos peinados realmente bonitos.

Si alguien te llega a confundir con una Oirán reacciona TAN OFENDIDO(incluso más que tu). Realmente molesto por algo así, digo, hasta EL ve la diferencia ¿Realmente es tan difícil entender que no son la misma cosa?

Definitivamente le encanta el baile por sobre todo, se te une a ellos y hasta le dan un abanico para convinar.

*Cuando All Might abandonó el departamento, Deku estaba sentado frente a la ventana y admirando las últimas vistas de su hogar, Musutafu, mientras los héroes salen del edificio*

*En el pasillo*

Aizawa: No fue fácil decírselo, ¿No?

Cuando los primos dieron la última palabra, el resto de familiares hicieron un escándalo alguno, hasta que los héroes aseguraron que lo cuidarían desde Musutafu. Así que con esa aclaración, tuvieron que aceptar.

Posterior a esparcir la noticia, los Héroes profesionales empezaron a preparar las cosas para el exilio que será dentro de 2 días.
