what do you think the show would b like if brio wasn’t like a thing because it was unintentional but i can’t help but wonder how different the show would b if brio wasn’t a thing and like what “romantic” plot would we be seeing and like would the amount of viewers change what do you think do you see yourself watching it if rio and beth were strictly business (as he so desperately tries to claim) or like would you be bored also sorry if you have been asked this before

That’s an interesting question, anon! I guess my answer comes in two parts, because I think we sort of know what the show would’ve looked like if Beth x Rio weren’t a thing from the original pilot trailer.

I talked about it a bit in this post, but I don’t think the original Beth (played by Kathleen Rose Perkins) would’ve had the same relationship with crime that our Beth (Christina Hendricks) has at all, let alone with Rio. This is pure speculation, but I think that version of the show would’ve operated as more of a comedy of errors when it came to the crime side of things, and likely focused a little more of the emotional throughline and growth at home. I’m actually pretty sure Rio was supposed to go to prison at the end of season 1 initially too, not get out on bail (just from things Manny and Jenna have both inferred in interviews) and stick around. If that was the case, I think we probably would’ve gotten a new antagonist, and perhaps even a more direct line between the girls and Turner, as opposed to the triangle of Beth, Rio and Turner.

Of course, that’s not what happened though, in no small part because we got Christina’s Beth, not Kathleen’s!

In that context, I actually can see the show never having made them a canon romance while still maintaining the shape of the series we got pretty easily. Beth’s romance with Rio after all has equally been about her romance with crime – she followed the siren call of the latter in a way that feels steeped in her desire for control and power, and that’s something that’s headily realised in the way Christina plays Beth. 

The way the show exists has had that seduction really personified via her attraction to Rio in a way that underlines that overall (and adds an incredibly fun and twisted dynamic to that thematic throughline!), but I actually don’t think it’s overall necessary to it. I think they could’ve kept it platonic and kept it focused on Beth’s desire to be Rio, as opposed to the conflicting be-him-or-be-with-him relationship we’ve gotten instead (which I’ll be the first to admit I’m glad for, haha). 

That said, I can’t really imagine a scenario where Manny and Christina’s chemistry isn’t off the charts, so even if Beth and Rio hadn’t become canon, and the romantic and sexual elements had been downplayed, I think they still would’ve crackled on screen together, and the shipping would’ve existed. In that sense, I think so long as Christina and Manny were playing Beth and Rio, the show probably would’ve attracted a similar viewership? 

As for the romance plotlines, I actually think we might’ve gotten our Beth x Dean divorce sooner, and had Beth dating PTA dads, and had the romantic conflicts more steeped in Beth trying to keep her crime and personal lives separate, instead of the sort of messy, blurring lines we have.

Do you know if they filmed the entire season 1 with Kathleen or was it just a couple episodes

Only the pilot! Apparently Christina had been their first choice originally, but had pulled out because she thought NBC would sanitise the show and not let them do what they wanted to, so they ended up shooting the pilot with Kathleen. Sometime after they shot it, they were able to convince Christina that the show wouldn’t lose it’s edge.

I’ve also seen on Twitter that they did a test screening of the original pilot and had quite a lot of negative feedback on the surveys about Kathleen’s Beth too, which I think likely lead to the re-working of the character as a whole and pushed the re-casting.
