245 - Dolores Claiborne (with Louis Peitzman!)
Tumblr media
In the small hall of Oscar-endorsed horror films, the centerpiece must be Kathy Bates brilliant and terrifying win for Best Actress in Misery. A few years after that win, Bates returned to Stephen King territory (though you can debate how much of a horror story it is) with Dolores Claiborne, the mystery of whether or not a woman killed not only her wealthy employer, but her husband decades prior. With Jennifer Jason Leigh as Bates’ estranged daughter and director Taylor Hackford at the helm, the film couldn’t return to that other King film’s Oscar anointing but endures as an intense melodrama and one of the best King adaptations.
This week, writer Louis Peitzman join us to unpack the history of King adaptations and each of our history with King’s work. We also discuss supporting player Judy Parfitt’s exquisite line readings, the differing takes on The Shining delivered by King and Stanley Kubrick, and this story’s connection to Gerald’s Game.
Topics also include the many 1995 Best Actress outsiders, Bates’ pre-Oscar theatre career, and Dead Like Me.

Thrown Away (Case #0092302)
Pre-Statement
Statement of Kieran Woodward, regarding items recovered from the refuse of 93 Lancaster Road, Walthamstow.
Original statement given February 23, 2009.
Date of Event(s): August 8, 2008
Statement
Woodward works as a garbage collector, whose crew is comprised of David Atayah, Matthew Wilkinson, and Alan Parfitt
100s of assorted doll heads in a bag
The heads were battered, like they’ve been dragged through rough concrete
Few months later, at the start of spring there’s another weird bag
Inside was long strips of paper, with the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, written on it in Latin and slightly singed around the edges
The third bag, 2 weeks later, was filled with thousands of teeth🤮
“It almost felt like a ritual”🤨
The elderly could who answered the door wasn’t aware of what was in their trash
Alan got worse, more irritable and short-tempered
was fired after falling asleep behind the wheel and was replaced by Guy Wardman
On August 8, 2008, 2:09 am Woodward got a text from Alan that read “Found him”
Woodward went back to 93 Lancaster Road
There was a fourth bag, tied off with a dark green bow
Inside was polystyrene packing peanuts, and bronze or copper that had been carved into an anatomical heart, with “Alan Parfitt etched into it with “machine-like precision”
It was cold, like it just came out of a freezer
That was the last sign of Alan
He asked a friend to dispose it in a medical waste incinerator
Post-Statement/Thoughts
There’s been no more strange bags
Alan was reported as missing by his brother, Micheal on August 20, 2008
The teeth bag case was managed by Officers Suresh and Altman
The third bag contained 2780 of the same tooth, all it different states of decay
Do doll heads, Latin, and teeth
The Lord’s Prayer goes like this
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer was a way for Jesus’ disciples to express their reverence towards Christ, their worship and devotion to the divine
It’s also in Latin
In ep 4, I marked this quote “Latin fell out of favour as a language for academic texts in the 18th Century. Since then it has only really used for religious texts”
Ep 4 also reference King Solomon so more religious references
This book was also singed along its edges
This is the second instance where some kind of Latin text was burnt, ep 4 being the prior
I guess teeth would be associated with The Flesh
For the dolls and Latin idk
Just looked at the Fear Wiki
If I had to guess all the fires associated with the Latin could be The Desolation and the uncanniness of the doll heads could be The Stranger?

Episode of the day: MAG 5 Thrown Away
"It was creepy, sure, but the sun was shining and there were four of us working the truck that day, so it was easy enough to laugh it off. It was the old crew – me, David Atayah, Matthew Wilkinson, and Alan Parfitt, who drives – drove – the truck."

Remember… there is something about this place that inbuilt in its character is a very strong sense of identity. Sort of an invitation to claim it, own it, your home, like through a stick of rock, so when you leave that or lose that I think you can have a troubled time. — Sir Kenneth Branagh

You know you were destined to be famous when your name has the exact right amount of syllables to be chanted like a football chant.
Brian May
Stevie Nicks
Rick Parfitt
Elton John
Ringo Starr
Cozy Powell
Andy Scott
And we can fudge George Harrison by just chanting his surname. If we really fudge it, Suzie Q for Suzie Quattro. If we forget it sounds better with an extra syllable we can even do Keith Moon and Steve Priest and we could even go crazy and emphasise the wrong syllable for John Deacon and Mick Tucker.
But we absolutely can't do Roger Taylor, Roger Taylor, Freddie Mercury, Lyndsay Buckingham, Francis Rossi, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Roger Daltrey, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osborne, Paul McCartney, Richie Blackmore, Brian Connolly or Annie Lennox.

The Pull of Autumn - Outlaw Empire - featuring Mark Stewart, Adrian Sherwood, & Doug Wimbish (!)
Art rock collective The Pull of Autumn presents their new single 'Outlaw Empire' featuring Mark Stewart, founding member of the legendary UK band The Pop Group, and remixed by the esteemed Adrian Sherwood. The first taste of the band's fourth album 'Beautiful Broken World', The Pull of Autumn mastermind Daniel Darrow incorporates elements of granular glitch synthesis to the track, the end result being a daring mixture of dub, jazz, spoken word and electronic music.
Long wishing to collaborate with Mark Stewart, the opportunity finally arose for Darrow thanks to Scott Crow of Emergency Heart Records, through which both Darrow and Stewart have released music. Fortunately Stewart, known for his experimental postpunk-jazz explorations and his production and remixes for such artists as The Fall, The Slits and Nine Inch Nails, thought it was a great idea.
Also featuring bassist Doug Wimbish (Living Colour, Tackhead and sessional musician for The Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Depeche Mode, Sugarhill Gang and James Brown), this track was given the golden remix treatment by the legendary Adrian Sherwood, English record producer and owner of the famed On-U-Sound Records, the first label to experiment with early dub reggae music using echo, reverb and delay techniques. Mixing dub with other forms of electronic music, Sherwood has created remixes for Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, Skinny Puppy and Sinead O' Connor.
'Beautiful Broken World' is an ambitious 15-track undertaking that began in early 2020 and involves a number of iconic artists. They include Philip Parfitt of The Perfect Disaster, Stuart Moxham of Rough Trade postpunk band Young Marble Giants, Luke Skyscraper James of I.R.S. recording artist FASHION and John Neff, who has contributed to multiple David Lynch films and is also a member of David Lynch’s Blubob.
