“When Williamson started writing the finale, he was sure Joey would choose Dawson. Then, as Kapinos recalls, Holmes stepped in. “Katie freaked out. ‘I don’t want to end up with Dawson,’” he remembers her saying. “So it got replotted, or rewritten.”

Dawson's Creek doesn’t even have an ~active~ fandom but I have so many thoughts about that show that I barely ever express lol

Omg. I just figured it out. Jeremiah is the Pacey and Conrad is SO Dawson, down to the crying meme face.
Dawson was Joey's first love, she was so obsessed with him, yada yada yada, but Pacey, who started out as her friend initially, was the one she needed at the end of the day. They're lighter together, whereas Conrad/Dawson drag Belly/Joey down.
If you're a Dawson girl, you're a Conrad girl.
If you're a Pacey girl, you're a Jeremiah girl.
That's it, that's the post!

Pacey: I want you to be with someone who makes you feel like I feel when I'm with you. So, I guess the point to this long run-on sentence that's been the last 10 years of our lives is just that the simple act of being in love with you is enough for me
That line right there is why I will always choose Pacey for Joey. Whenever she had to choose between him and someone else while he used different words he always stood on the same point. That yes of course he wanted her to choose him, and that yes it was gonna suck and hurt if she didn't, but because he loved her and cared about her all he wanted was for her to be happy even if it wasn't with him. That while yes they had their problems and weren't perfect, they grew and changed and learned from those mistakes.
You can't really say the same for Dawson. From the minute he and Joey started dating the first time he was manipulative, he was controlling, and he was emotionally abusive. He was constantly making her feel like she had to choose between him and what made her happy. He constantly used what he knew their friendship meant to her to manipulate her. He invaded her privacy and then tried to make it her fault. When they would break up he would expect her to sit around and wait for him to change his mind. And I don't think anyone really faulted him for not being ok with Joey and Pacey it was more the way he handled it. He could have easily said like hey I want you to be happy but I'm not in a place where I can see you with someone else and be your friend right now. But he didn't he basically told her you either choose me or you can go to hell. He didn't love Joey, he just had this story in his head of who she was and who they were together and he threw a tantrum when she didn't stick to his script. He was the same way with Jen when she didn't live up to the narrative he'd written in his mind.
So I'm so glad Joshua Jackson pushed for a Pacey/Joey endgame not just because I love them, but because Joey deserved better than Dawson, who wanted her to do whatever he wanted and only wanted her the way he thought she should be and not for who she really was.
