gonna ramble about neo in my rwby sci fi au a bit, long text below the cut:

Neopolitan Sci Fi / Alien au

-Part of an alien species called Udinnies (singular: Udinny). Udinnies are a unisex humanoid species with an appearance somewhat resembling sea slugs. Udinnies are semi-aquatic, and breath through skin diffusion and as such generally need to stay at least somewhat hydrated at all times to remain healthy. They have the ability to change their appearance to suit their environment, but some individuals have honed their skills to change their physiology almost entirely (like Neo did). Udinnies are very elastic and self regenerating and are capable of surviving many falls and injuries that would be typically fatal to humans. Udinnies have an unusual way of speaking, they have two separate vocal chords, one near the front of their mouth that makes whistling+trilling sounds, and another in their throat that more closely resembles “human speech”. Both chords are used at the same time by Udinnies in speech, dubbing their unique method of communication as “dualspeak”. Neo however was born with underdeveloped/weak lower vocal chords and cannot speak at all. She can still make said whistling and trilling sounds with her upper mouth.

-Her adoptive parents chose to take her in from a rich orphanage after the death of their own daughter, and specifically chose an Udinny with the somewhat twisted idea that they could take advantage of the shapeshifting ability of Neo’s species and make her essentially morph physically and mentally into their lost daughter. This did not work as planned.

-Neo’s backstory at this point is mostly similar to her one in Roman Holiday with some changes/edits to fit the setting. She was raised in this restrictive household (which was a large private spaceship near the planetary colony of Vale) that tried to ignore her needs and conform her into someone she didn’t want to be. She spent a lot of time in the human form at a young age, and she hated the lack of “customization” she was granted, which she began to experiment with as she grew older with gradual “edits” so how she wanted to look and present. In her adulthood she switches back and forth between her human form and Udinny form and sees both as equal parts of herself.

-Neo does not find any comfort whatsoever among her own species, who have their own set of expectations regarding her.

-Her gender is a complicated subject because Udinny cultures do not know gender as a concept, but she was raised among humans who imposed a binary female gender onto her. She considers herself “woman-aligned” by human understandings and goes by she/they, having been comfortable being seen as a woman but not in the specific way that had been imposed onto her. She is not considered cis by either set of cultures.

-At a young age her imperfect shapeshifting had made her “uncanny” to a decent number of humans which partially contributed to why she’d been sheltered. As she grew older her ability to replicate human appearances was fine tuned and near perfected.

-She is neurodivergent in some way, unsure what specially but she is, probably autism.
