SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Steinbeck Found the Valley” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tODZxOojn0s This is an Americana instrumental prompted by a line from the Beach Boys's "California Saga": "Have you ever been down Salinas way where Steinbeck found the valley, and he wrote about the way it was, and his travelings with Charley..." The music bed was inspired by a Beach Boys outtake “Trombone Dixie” (from the PET SOUNDS sessions) and other SMILE-era instrumentals.
The images shown are from a farm estate my Dad worked on in Virginia, which worked great for this music even though it alludes to California. For me, Steinbeck is "pure California” and “pure Americana.”
On this track I played accordion and piano with cellist Kim Osterwalder (from the band Flophouse; she also gigged with mutual friends, Buddy & Julie Miller) + trombonist Richard Marriott, who improvised his parts in two takes. Richard is an accomplished composer and veteran of big bands, orchestras, fringe music, and film soundtracks—check out his work at http://www.richardmarriott.com/

Today in Christian History
Today is Monday, February 19th, 2024. It is the 50th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar; Because it is a leap year, 316 days remain until the end of the year.
1860: Viscount Dungannon moves a resolution condemning prayer meetings in the theatres of Southern England where revival services are booming.
1873: A longstanding edict against Christianity is revoked in Japan.
1886: Death at Longmeadow, Massachusetts, of Samuel Wolcott pictured above), a Congregational clergyman and author of numerous hymns, among them “Christ for the World We Sing.”
1930: Internationally-known evangelist and Bible expositor, Harry A. Ironside, is issued a unanimous call (which he will accept) to pastor the Moody Memorial Bible Church in Chicago.
1946: Death in Topeka, Kansas, of pastor Charles Monroe Sheldon, author of the popular Christian novel In His Steps, from which we get the phrase “What Would Jesus Do?”
1949: After trying unsuccessfully for many years to stifle Christianity, the government of Bulgaria passes a law acknowledging that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is the traditional church of Bulgaria and inseparably united with its history.

#OTD in 1641 – Rory O’More, Lord Maguire and Sir Pheilim O’Neill initiate a major revolt in Armagh.
The Irish Uprising of 1641 was a long-term result of the “plantation” policy of Tudor and Stuart monarchs under which Ireland was aggressively colonised by Protestant settlers from England and Scotland.
From the mid-16th century, Irish landowners were dispossessed to make way for the settlers and a vicious cycle developed whereby rebellion against the English government was followed by further…

Worked the night shift last night and we literally only had 1 family come in after 5 so I finished Bimbos of the Death Sun(one of my woman co-workers has mentioned it twice as liking it so I was curious)
I was like "oh I bet the killer is the guy Dungannon called slurs" and although I did nail it it was not for the reasons I thought
I have no idea how accurate it is to convention scenes of the 80s but the coworker who recommended it claims it is and apparently she was in those kinds of scenes at the time
And if that's the case yeah I think cons have changed for the better
Also it was so funny at one point someone was like "oh Star Trek ended 20 years ago and people are still making fanfiction for it" bc the book was published in February 1987 and then September 1987 the first episode of TNG aired vvhvhvv
