#OTD in 1641 – Rory O’More, Lord Maguire and Sir Pheilim O’Neill initiate a major revolt in Armagh.
The Irish Uprising of 1641 was a long-term result of the “plantation” policy of Tudor and Stuart monarchs under which Ireland was aggressively colonised by Protestant settlers from England and Scotland. From the mid-16th century, Irish landowners were dispossessed to make way for the settlers and a vicious cycle developed whereby rebellion against the English government was followed by further…

A fine set of fetlocks!
flickr
A fine set of fetlocks! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H. Poole Collection: Poole Photographic Collection, Waterford Date: 1915 - 1917, most likely 1917 NLI Ref: POOLEWP 2734 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

ART THREAD
I have had the very great pleasure of commissioning some beautiful art to celebrate the release of my new novel Nine-Tenths. I'm going to share them all in this thread (and hopefully add to it if I'm lucky enough to be graced with more) so you can appreciate the talent of these incredible artists.
Tumblr media
by Christopher Winkelaar
Nine-Tenths is set in a world where all the nobility in Europe are homo draconis - shape-shifting dragons who have the ability to take human form. Every culture in the world have dragons living among the humans, but the European and Asian nations are the only ones where dragons were historically elevated to the roles of monarchs, nobles, and emperors.
In a world where the American Colonies rejected British rule, this meant they were also rejecting draconic protection--and so while they won their Independence in 1793, they were soundly trounced in the War of 1812, losing all of New England, including New York State, to the British. They were absorbed into the Canadas, except for New York City, which was reclaimed by the Dutch and re-renamed New Amsterdam.
The Canadian colonies expanded west, as they historically did in our world, through a series of broken treaties with the Indigenous peoples of the continent, and the reprehensible colonialist practices which put the settlers in power today. It also means they were able to expand further south, without the Americans to bump up against.
This also meant that the Americans were unable to expand as far south and west as in our world, coming up against Indigenous dragon-protected lands, such as the Oniagara, or Aztec and Incan empires, which grew further north after Spanish contact, and flourished.
Unlike in the current version of Canada, the land was legislatively divided into much smaller provinces than currently exist, each overseen by a hereditary draconic Lieutenant Governor, who report to the draconic Governor of the Canadas, who in turn reports to the House of Lords in England (also dragons). Each province is divided into Duchies, Earldoms, and Marquessates, presided over by a noble dragon family.
As dragons are long-lived, the current Queen of England is Elizabeth (the first one). As she has not yet passed, the Kingdom of Scotland as yet remains separate from England. Ireland too is independent, the Irish dragons having beaten back the English ones. However, Wales remains a satellite colony of England, as the betrayal which brought about it's subjugation and the trickery around the hereditary title "Prince of Wales" still occurred. (This an important plot point).
Tumblr media
by @seancefemme
This is the first piece of art I commissioned for the novel, and you'll note it's now become the cover art!
Meet the heroes of our tale: barista and disaster bi Colin Levesque, stuck in the middle of his quarter-life crisis and crushing on his cafe regular, Welsh dragon Dav, the Marquis of Niagara (though of course, Colin doesn't know he's the Marquis, and thinks Dav is just some minor noble with nothing better to do all day than hang out and read).
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin works at Beanevolence, an indie cafe in downtown St. Catharine's, in the province of Upper Canada (Southern Ontario in our world). It's owned by his bestie Hadi, and he was only supposed to be a barista until he'd graduated. But now he has his Sustainable Tourism degree, and no clue what to do next. He feels completely stuck. Luckily he has Dav to distract him.
Except that one day Dav distracts him too well, which results in a kitchen fire. As an apology for the inferno, and to help the cafe get back on it's feet while the repairs are under way, Dav volunteers as the new bean roaster, creating incredible and (and ultimately social-media viral) coffee roasts with his fire-breath.
Tumblr media
by @ibrithir-was-here
Colin and Dav start a flirtation at work.
Which leads to...
Tumblr media
by @teejaystumbles
Luxurious dates and late-night smoochies.
Tumblr media
by @pinkpiggy93
Which also goes a little bit viral. See, it turns out that the Marquis of Niagara usually keeps a low profile, and his sudden romance with a human has the gossip rags and tabloids all in a tizzy.
But more than that, it puts Dav under the scrutiny of Francis Simcoe. He's the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, a dragon with a hate-on for Dav, and the perfect ammunition to ruin his happiness.
Because, you see, it's against dragonic rules for dragons to be seen to be laboring in service of humans... and Dav's new gig at Beanevolence is about to--forgive the pun--land him in hot water.

i have to ask becuz i love sean and i love ur au, since darragh was famous back in 1899, is he famous still? or is there anyway sean or lenny or anyone stumbles across more info about him?
he isn't famous like due to the (vague gesture to the history of ireland) but almost all info still available on him is stuff sean had absolutely no idea about. thankfully this is an idea i have had cooking for a while so hold onto your hats
annabelle (my queen) is constantly travelling internationally due to her work as a humanitarian and the second she gets asked to speak at a conference in ireland she violently insists that sean and kieran come with her (lenny could come too but he's busy with exams :c)
pls take this moment to consider the challenges of getting sean and kieran on a plane. it's a minimum 10 hour flight everyone's worried about how kieran will react to the general chaos of it but my boy has his headphones and every season of my little pony friendship is magic he's fine. sean, on the other hand, practically has to be sedated. hitting them with the are we there yet after half an hour in the air. might have a slight panic attack being in an enclosed space for so long. his last transatlantic crossing was on a boat and sure it took weeks but he could fucking run around.
poor annabelle standing there with their bags outside the airport while sean and kieran just lay on the nature strip. proper irish soil!! irish grass!! irish air!! a proper irish pub with proper irish food!! (annabelle is aware they are not allowed to drink unsupervised and to try and rein them in if it gets problematic but denying irish boys a chance to drink at an irish pub?)
so many buildings have been preserved sean can literally navigate the city like he never left. it's very obvious if kieran wasn't there he would've run off and annabelle would have no hope in hell of finding him.
sean remembering stuff he didn't even know he remembered. they'll be walking around or doing touristy history shit and he'll be hit with a vivid memory of being in that place with his da. there are some businesses still open from the time period. he can literally buy bread from the same bakery his da did that was cooked in the same brick oven.
kieran is in charge of taking photos and he takes the best and worst photos. sean will point out a tree he used to climb or a sidewalk he tripped over one time and scraped his knee real bad and his da had to carry him because he as a child insisted his leg was broken and kieran will photograph it.
the big thing is a lot of darragh's legitimate political work is what he's remembered for/easily documented and as a child that was both a) boring as shit and b) not something he fully understood so sean is learning about like all these rallies and amazing debates his da had with career politicians and landowners where his blessed self-educated father absolutely kicked ass.
obviously darragh hated the british and had some contentious arguments with irish-born landowners but it's so obvious how much he loved his son. after sean was born he started advocating for education like children should not be expected to work how can people expect the public to even recognize the corruption of politics or that the people meant to represent them are cut from same cloth as the parasitic aristocracy and win votes through a crass imitation of the struggles of the poor if they're not educated.
sean still struggling to understand half his father's debates because it's really clicking just how smart darragh was. they're following a biographical map of darragh's movements through ireland and he's facetiming lenny from massive parliament halls like 'apparently my da gave a speech here about the rights of the working class?? there's a rumor he punched the lord lieutenant but that was british propaganda?? here's an oil painting of my da punching the lord lieutenant??'
lenny is seething HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW YOUR DA WAS A MAJOR POLITICAL FIGURE???!?!?! I JUST REMEMBER THE FUN STUFF LIKE SETTING FIRE TO SHIT
darragh's murder at the time had massive political implications in ireland and while most of it was lost to history there's some snippets of really positive things even his political opponents said about him following his death. plus there was a riot that ended with the burning of a major british agency building. sean gets a laminated poster of the newspaper article and takes selfies with the memorial plaque.

May 4th* 1658 General George Monk proclaimed the Protectorate at Mercat Cross.
Some sources say 5th
Cromwells new model army had invaded Scotland, winning decisive battles against the Scots at battles of Dunbar and Inverkeithing, this Proclamation in Edinburgh was made to draw a line under Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Oliver Cromwell was installed as the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland and he ordained that the People of Scotland were pardoned for any crimes they might have committed during the preceding wars and that there would be not further financial or other punishments.
There were of course exceptions, any Royalty were still to be held to account as were over two dozen Scottish nobles and generals including David Leslie Lieutenant-General of the Scottish Army. Over 70 other nobles who had been fined by Cromwell were still held to those penalties.
Scotland was placed under English military occupation with General Monck as military governor of the country. The English army had been able to suppress the Scottish resistance to the occupation with relative ease and the occupation, with sporadic but ineffective resistance, this continued until 1660 when Monk was instrumental in the restoration of the monarchy and Charles II was invited to take the throne.

Lucy Percy Hay, Countess of Carlisle (1599-1660), Van Dyck c1637, private collection.
Her father was the so called “wizard Earl” Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland and her mother Dorothy Deveraux one of the Earl of Essex’s sisters. Dorothy in turn was the daughter of Lettice Knollys, who was herself in turn the daughter of Catherine Carey the daughter of Mary Boleyn - sister of Anne Boleyn and aunt of Elizabeth I - and maybe Henry VIII himself depending on if you think he was Catherine Carey’s father or not.
Despite this illustrious linage, Lucy’s childhood was overshadowed by her fathers incarceration in the Tower of London for his alleged role in the gunpowder plot, and the collapse of her parents marriage. At age 17 Lucy eloped with James Hay, Viscount Doncaster, a member of James Is bedchamber and minor favorite who was twice her age and a widower with children. Although she claimed to be in love with him, it’s just as likely Lucy saw James Hay as her ticket out of the tower and to court.
Around 1620 it’s believed that Lucy became lovers with the then Marquis of Buckingham, with her husbands approval - George was the key to the king and to favors. The gamble paid off as the Doncasters were created Earl and Countess of Carlisle about this time. Lucy and George would remain involved until his death in 1628. Her husband James died in 1632 leaving Lucy a wealthy, well-connected, child-free widow; and a major figure at Charles I’s court as the sometimes ally, sometimes frenemy of the Queen. She was said to be one of the great beauties and wits of the era, and her salon was a major hub of political networking and literary patronage. She was also, despite her reputation for libertinage, something of a puritan.
The above painting was a gift for another rumored lover; Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
During the civil war Lucy developed a reputation for playing both sides for the middle, eventually returning to the tower for involvement in conspiracies against the newly established commonwealth. She died of a stroke in 1660, her days of glory long behind her.
There has never been a proper biography or study of Lucy and her career, despite being one of the major political influence brokers, intelligence agents, and cultural patrons of the age. Instead, Lucy is mostly remembered today as the potential inspiration for Milady de Winter from The Three Musketeers, along with a number of other salacious stories of varying accuracy, such as supposedly informing the five MPs of their impending arrest in 1642. Due to the fact few of her papers have survived, getting to the woman behind the sensational legends is not easy.
