It was probably some wonderful organisation on the part of Nature to protect itself. It saw to it that everyone with any magical talent was about as ready to cooperate as a she-bear with a toothache, so all that dangerous power was safely dissipated as random bickering and rivalry. There were differences in style, of course. Wizards assassinated each other in draughty corridors, witches just cut one another dead in the street. And they were all as self-centered as a spinning top. Even when they help other people, she thought, they're secretly doing it for themselves. Honestly, they're just like big children.

this was just so funny to me. I like that Pratchett never fails to emphasize that these social classes of characters aren't inherently good nor bad. They have their flaws and different ways of dealing with each other and the world. It's very human and therefore very grounding and entertaining.

What I love about Terry Pratchett's good characters is that they never fail you. Sam Vimes might push you towards the piss puddle for fun, or put a farting pillow under your chair, maybe tie your shoelaces while you're asleep - but he would never fuck your wife or piss into your shoes or make you miserable for no reason other than sheer "fun".

Granny Weatherwax would never say "no" to a crying for help or "please". She wouldn't betray her morals for money, some sort of respect gain or power.

So wouldn't Angua. Or Susan. Or Adora Belle. Or Carrot. Or Luggage.

more Discworld adaptation thoughts; i like the idea of getting Harry Potter actors to have major roles. Daniel Radcliffe as Rincewind, Rupert Grint as Ponder Stibbons, Emma Watson as Magrat Garlick, Maggie Smith as Mistress Esmeralda Weatherwax. and of course, as i've mentioned before, Miriam Margolyes as Nanny Ogg.

additionally i really like Danny John-Jules for Sam Vimes. maybe we could get the other Red Dwarf lads in there. i know Craig Charles would make a great Nobby Nobs, though that's probably coloured by his Dave Lister performance.

+++Hello Roundworld!+++

I've seen my fair share of Discworld polls by now, and every character bracket that contains the Big Wukwuks like Sam Vimes, Death, Granny Weatherwax etc., always sees them win - so I'm proposing a different approach.

I'm going to offer, over the next months, brackets that will include a set of characters MINUS the Big Wukwuk you'd expect in that set of characters. Say, "Favorite Watch Character (minus Sam Vimes)" and so on. I'm going to roughly follow the character groupings that the L-Space wiki uses, but I'm also thinking of other groupings - feel free to suggest some!

Basically, if a character is the main protagonist of a series of stories, they count as a Big Wukwuk and will be banned from participating in a bracket. For main protagonists of just one story (such as Victor Tugelbend and Polly Perks), I'm going to use my own discretion as pertains to the bracket they're in. Basically, I want brackets in which the smaller wuks have a chance to win!

As of now, I'm thinking of the following brackets:

Favorite Watch Character (minus Sam Vimes and Captain Carrot)

Favorite Ankh-Morpork Character (minus Vetinari and Moist von Lipwig)

Favorite Unseen University Character (minus Mustrum Ridcully and Rincewind)

Favorite Witches Character (minus Esmeralda Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching)

Favorite Death's Domain and Other Supernatural Entities Character (minus Death and Susan Sto Helit)

Favorite Miscellaneous Character

Favorite Dwarf (minus Cheery Littlebottom)

Favorite Troll (minus Detritus)

Favorite Igor (minus Igor)

Favorite Non-Humanoid Character (minus the Librarian)

and perhaps even a bracket of bracket-winners!

Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett. It was my first Pratchett and my first introduction to Death from Discworld. It lives rent free in the pent house of my heart.

I generally do not like standalone becoming series.

However, I adored Frogkisser by Garth Nix and would not be against exploring more of that world.
