Do you use Facebook? You might obtain some settlement money
Tumblr media
Anyone who has a Facebook account in the US and is qualified to receive a portion of the $725 million privacy settlement that parent firm Meta has agreed to pay, may now submit an application. Eligible applicants must have had a Facebook account in the US since May 24, 2007. The world's largest social networking platform, Meta, is paying to settle claims that it permitted millions of its users' personal information to be given to Cambridge Analytica, a company that helped Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election. The amount of money that each user will get is unclear. Since the funds must be distributed among them, each payment will be smaller the more persons who submit valid claims. To apply for the settlement, users can either print the paperwork and mail it in or fill it out online. The situation started as a result of claims made in 2018 that Cambridge Analytica, a firm associated with Trump political adviser Steve Bannon, paid a Facebook app developer for access to the personal information of about 87 million platform users. After then, that information was used to target American voters throughout the 2016 presidential election campaign that ended with Trump being the 45th president. The outrage over the findings prompted senators in the US to question a repentant Zuckerberg and sparked requests for people to cancel their Facebook accounts. Facebook still has more than 2 billion members globally, including an estimated 250 million in the US, despite the fact that its growth has slowed as more people connect and amuse themselves on competing sites like TikTok. Two depressing news articles today.
Minority ethnic heart failure patients ‘36% more likely to die’ in UK Study also finds people from ethnic minorities with atrial fibrillation more than twice as likely to die than white patients Tobi Thomas Health and inequalities correspondent Mon 3 Jun 2024 00.00 BST Share Minority ethnic patients with heart failure are more than a third more likely to die than their white counterparts, according to research. The study, by researchers at the University of Birmingham and supported by the British Heart Foundation, looked at data from more than 16,700 people from 12 existing clinical trials for heart failure patients. Eleven of these trials were testing the effects of beta blockers, with the remaining one examining the medication spironolactone. The researchers’ analysis found that for patients from a minority ethnic background there was a 36% higher risk of death after an average of 17 months, compared with their white counterparts. People from ethnic minorities who also had atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm irregularity, were over twice as likely to die during the 17-month follow-up period. The study showed that beta blockers, which are commonly prescribed for heart failure, were able to reduce deaths in white patients by almost a third ethnic minority ethnic patients were inconclusive. The researchers also noted that 89% of the patients included in the study were white, which highlights the under-representation of minority ethnic patients in clinical studies. Previous research has shown that patients who are female, black, Asian or less well-off are significantly less likely to be offered heart valve surgery on the NHS in England.
Tories will allow bars on trans women, says Kemi Badenoch
Tories will allow bars on trans women, says Kemi Badenoch Conservatives would change law so trans people could be excluded from single-sex spaces, if party wins election Jessica Elgot Deputy political editor Sun 2 Jun 2024 17.30 EDT Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare via Email Kemi Badenoch has said the Conservatives will change the Equality Act to rewrite the definition of sex and allow organisations to bar transgender women from single-sex spaces, including hospital wards and sports events. The party will make clear that the protected characteristic of sex means biological sex, enabling those who wish to bar male-bodied people from organisations or activities to do so. Badenoch said it would provide reassurance for services such as those aimed at domestic abuse victims.

Mary Poppins’ UK age rating raised to PG due to discriminatory language
British Board of Film Classification lifts it from U certificate almost 60 years after film was first released

Mary Poppins has had its age rating lifted to a PG by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) almost 60 years after it was first released.
The film’s rating has been upgraded from U – which signifies no material likely to offend or harm – to one advising parental guidance due to the use of discriminatory language, the Daily Mail reported.
It was changed because of a derogatory term for the Khoikhoi, a group of people who were among the first inhabitants of southern Africa.
Classifiers picked up on the term used by the character Admiral Boom – first as a reference to people not onscreen, then as a reference to the film’s child stars when their faces are blackened with soot.
“We understand from our racism and discrimination research … that a key concern for … parents is the potential to expose children to discriminatory language or behaviour which they may find distressing or repeat without realising the potential offence,” a BBFC spokesperson told the Mail.
“Content with immediate and clear condemnation is more likely to receive a lower rating.”
The reclassification affects only the cinema version of the film, with home entertainment versions still rated U, according to the BBFC. The word in question is “Hottentot”, an adopted name for the Khoikhoi used by Dutch settlers, thought to imitate their language, which is considered offensive. It would later be used to refer to all black people.
It is not the first classic film to have its rating upgraded in recent years. According to the BBFC’s 2022 annual report, the 1978 animated film Watership Down merited a PG rating as classifiers sought to “remain in step with societal standards”.
They said: “In their exile, the rabbits meet various challenges, some of which result in bloody bite and claw injuries caused by animals fighting. In one scene, a bird tells one of the rabbits to ‘[pee] off’.”
They added: “When we viewed the film under the current guidelines we reclassified it PG in line with our current policies for violence, threat, injury detail and language.”
The 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture was also upgraded from a U to a PG that year as a result of its “very mild language, mild violence and threat”, the BBFC said.
When deciding on how to classify a film, the BBFC considers scenes that might show dangerous behaviour, discrimination, and references to drugs and sex. It also considers the language used in the film, scenes of nudity and of threat, horror and violence.
Classifiers particularly look out for discriminatory language or behaviour that is “unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of, or in an educational or historical context, or in a particularly dated work with no likely appeal to children”.
A message from Betsy Reed, editor of the Guardian UK...FA message from Betsy Reed, editor of the Guardian US
I hope you appreciated this article. Before you move on, I wanted to ask if you would consider supporting the Guardian’s journalism as we enter one of the most consequential news cycles of our lifetimes in 2024.
From Elon Musk to the Murdochs, a small number of billionaire owners have a powerful hold on so much of the information that reaches the public about what’s happening in the world. The Guardian is different. We have no billionaire owner or shareholders to consider. Our journalism is produced to serve the public interest – not profit motives.
And we avoid the trap that befalls much US media: the tendency, born of a desire to please all sides, to engage in false equivalence in the name of neutrality. We always strive to be fair. But sometimes that means calling out the lies of powerful people and institutions – and making clear how misinformation and demagoguery can damage democracy.
So...the Satanic State of Britain just threw one of their own Classics and one of their most adored actresses, Julie Andrews under the bus, by admitting that they put racist dog whistles IN Mary Poppins, just to damage Disney, over 50 years after the film was made. They killed their own Doctor Who series and now they just fucked over one of MY favorite childhood classics....JUST TO FUCK DISNEY. WOW.
