also Very interesting to me how transness is completely accepted in the silt verses and misgendering/deadnaming is nonexistent, but the only two references to transitioning in the show are about the exorbitant medical cost. (dennis saying he helped pay for paige's transition and now faulkner's father apologizing for not being able to afford T for him.)

the decision to forgo transphobic worldbuilding and not to hold the listener's hand wrt Explaining Transness is Very intentional, which makes the choice to reference transition like this stand out even more. everybody in this world will gender you correctly no matter what you look like, but if you actually want to feel like Yourself through transitioning, you gotta pay for that. which means you gotta sell yourself to a church or a corporation. all systems functioning as intended....

Something about the parallels between Carpenter’s chapter and Faulkner’s chapter kills me.

The way that Carpenter carries the sorrow and shame with her as literally as she carried that corpse, the way that the only thing she could do to escape from her childhood home was to bring her past with her. While Faulkner cannot carry it any longer, he’s been carrying it for so long that when he finally confronts it in his childhood home he drowns in it, he plunges head first into it and it takes courage and he is drowning-

Just something about how despite it all Faulkner still cannot swim. He is still drowning in the narrative he created for himself. Carpenter pulls herself out of the tide and rises above, carrying it with her and Faulkner is drowning.

everybody talks about and memes on the euphoria-and-tragedy of carpenter and faulkner becoming siblings when you forgot to consider that faulkner had killed his sibling before but ALSO. have any of you guys ever stopped and. just. thought about em.

thought about carpenter's brother giving himself up to the trawler-man body and soul. in a decision that made sense inasmuch as keeping his faith went, but was also wildly destructive and hurt people and more importantly, left his sister fully alone in the world. when she had already lost Everything else she held dear.... em's death as one of the things that most firmly shaped carpenter's tumultuous relationship with her own faith n the trawler-man, the miracles after he died and the helpless "you took everything from me" anger/grief combined.....

do you ever think about em as a man willing to give up everything for his god. including his sister. who loved him more than anything.
