Franck Biyong - Moonwatching 2 - new album from Cameroonian guitarist
Franck moves the limitations of African music with Moonwatching II, extending the palette of newer sounds in creative guitar music. As Afropop and Nigeria's Afrobeats are recognized worldwide, African rock is almost missing, although it’s one of the fundaments of Western rock music. Is Franck Biyong the African Jimi Hendrix? Well ... Let’s say it this way: Moonwatching II combines the abrasive sonics of James Blood Ulmer with the melodic structures of early progressive and art-‐rock. So yes, Franck (who by the way never intended to copy Jimi) naturally deals with similar topics and sounds in his music… Driven by eerie melancholy, surreal guitars, ghost voices and strong musicianship, the psychedelic music does not get transfigured through the gentle but clear melodic lines...With Moonwatching II, Franck Biyong swaggers from Funkadelic style rock before leading us to Frippertronics-‐likesound scapes...  CREDITS Cello - Tess Crowther Vocals: Melissa James (2 & 7), Haylen Namvarazad (2 & 6) Drums: Emmanuel Yakobo (3), Gabriel Oladayo (All other tracks) Piano, Fender Rhodes (4), Hammond Organ (2) - Florian Pellissier Electric Bass - Asaph Uzele (1), Antonella Mazza (2, 5, 6 & 7) Ghost voices: Silayio, Emma, Owuor, Haylen, Prisca, Ernest, Tony, Sage, Linda, Brian & other helpful spirits & ghosts Tape Effects, Percussion, Bass (3 & 4), All Guitars - FB

Oladipo (feat. Chief Udoh Essiet, Tony Allen) “We’re thrilled to present Oladipo, the first single from Franck Biyong’s forthcoming 'Radio Masoda' album on Tangential Music. The Cameroonian master musician and composer is joined by the equally masterful Chief Udoh Essiet (Fela Kuti & Egypt 80, Roy Ayers, King Sunny Ade) from Nigeria on this exhilarating tribute to their belovedelder Tony Allen, the co-founder of Afrobeat and one of the greatest drummers ever. Propelled by Tony Allen’s high energy drumming (from when they all recorded together) and with passionately sung Yoruba lyrics that were written originally as a funeral mourn to him by Chief Udoh, Oladipo sounds more of a celebration than a memorial. As vital as anything from the ‘golden age’ of African music, this is a stunning tribute to one of the elders who made it so golden”

New Music: Florie Namir - Silence Is Music
Florie Namir is a London-based Israeli singer songwriter who first appeared on this blog at the beginning of last year through her EP I Wanna Be In Love. Franck Biyong (@franckbiyong1) – Evening Prayer
Fridays don’t belong solely to those of us who like to twist it, whine it, break it, and bring it back. It’s also for the jazz lovers. It is for the nights in, the soirees, the art exhibitions and for the simply chilled.
‘Evening Prayer‘ is certainly for those of us who like to kick back to some fine dining while enjoying a night of proud top-class African jazz.

“The puppy guy works at the African hoe joint.”
Earlier this week, my roommate Spens and I noticed a man selling very cute, small, fluffy puppies on the road to passing cars and pedestrians.  He also had a younger associate selling guinea pigs and kittens.  We mentioned this to Shermit, the son of our landlords at our Westlands guesthouse.  He then launched into an extremely fascinating explanation of transactional sex, power, and gender norms in local Nairobi bar scene.  He also uttered one of the best phrases I’ve ever heard in my life: “Oh yeah, the puppy guy works at the African hoe joint.”
“African hoe joint” is Shermit’s term and describes a less upscale club or bar that is frequented by very attractive Kenyan women who are there for the explicit purpose of bagging a rich (preferably white) man.  As white women, if Spens and I were to go to the African hoe joint (AHJ), the Kenyan women may see us as competition for the male crowd, and might even start bar fights, break our phones, or physically try to hustle us out of the crowd or dance floor.  Race is everything at the AHJ, with women seeking drinks, cigarettes, and ultimately, a rich husband who would get them visas out of Kenya, buy them a big house, and have mixed-race kids.  **NOTE: this is one perspective of the whole situation, from that of a white male who I believe was raised in Kenya.  I haven’t yet mentioned this to any other Kenyan friends or gotten different perspectives.
Competition is clearly very stiff at the AHJ.  But where does the puppy guy come in?  According to Shermit, puppy guy is the closer.  He stands outside of the AHJ with his fluffy merchandise, and when a woman and her man come out of the bar, the man may seek to impress his lady friend by getting her a puppy if she’d like.  Because after a night of bar fights, drinking, and semi-transactional sex, there’s nothing like getting a tiny fluffy white puppy.
Shermit also mentioned a large population of mixed race kids in Nairobi, evidently as a result of couplings by expatriate or foreign patrons of these bar scenes.  The women at the AHJ are extremely beautiful, and specifically target white men, perhaps who have never had attention from women who are that attractive before.  Therefore, it can be very easy for some of these men to fall for some of the women in these situations.
This past week, I went out for the first time in Nairobi NOT to an AHJ, but rather to a popular bar that hosts live music every Thursday night.  This past week, J’s hosted Franck Biyong, who pioneered Afrolectric sound.  The whole scene was a cool-looking mix of attractive people, including Kenyans, expats, Indian Kenyans, and other folks from around East Africa.  There were two or three of the same species of middle-aged white men who like to trawl the crowds of foreign nightclubs in search for someone to take home that’s at least half their age.  But the music was good, the people were friendly, and the beer was delicious.

Afrobeat
Do najważniejszych kontynuatorów i spadkobierców tradycji afrobeat należą obecnie Femi Kuti (syn Feli), Seun Kuti (syn Feli), Inemo, Lagbaja, Wale Oyejide, Franck Biyong & Massak, a także grupy takie jak Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Afrodizz, Belgian Afrobeat Association, Albino!, Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, The Budos Band, Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble, Bukky Leo & Black Egypt ’80 i Ayetoro.

Franck Biyong - Kunde - guitarist’s new “Afro Electronic Body Music Odyssey”
“Franck Biyong's new body of work is a fascinating foray into industrial ambiance mixed and imagined exclusively in 360 Reality Audio, a new immersive music experience driven by spatial sound technology. KUNDE does not get lost in the EBM barrel but sounds contemporary, dark, and displaying a detailed kind of craftsmanship in each shadowy beat thump. It is still reminiscent of old school, yet it has a new age-sounding edge in the aggressive instrumental moments and then the open and calm expressionisms. This African psychedelic flower of musical innovation's beauty resembles some of King Crimson's improvisation style with more successful subtle focus, and then follows dramatic closure movements inspired by Krautrock's trademark cosmic voyage-like tones. KUNDE relies on electronic Afro meditation set against towering synths, a sinister wall of distortion, hard-hitting rhythms and melodic moods...A slow soothing space climax that will send you off into another dimension…”

Digital Crate Digging Continues per this Music Monday segment, I asked my constituents can you dig it?
The saga / struggle continues is what they had to say; matters at hand? jokers ignore the constitution or they’ll take the outcome and rig it..
The saga / struggle continues as we let the music play, pulling out the drum to go along with this eclectic rhetoric…
