February 26, 1918 - Hospital Ship Glenart Castle Sunk by U-Boat
Pictured - E. Edgar, who died along with 162 people, mostly hospital patients and nurses.
The way Allied propaganda exaggerated German atrocities during World War One left many people skeptical after the conflict whether one side had truly been worse than the other. Yet for all British tabloids and letter-writers played into stories like the rape of Belgium, it should be remembered today that the Central Powers did in fact consistently break international law and committed no small number of atrocities. The Allies bent rules to suit themselves too (their blockade of Greece was especially cynical), but their actions paled against brutalities like the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia, the German occupation of Belgium, and the Turkish genocide of Armenians. A small but horrific example took place on February 26, when a German U-boat torpedoed the hospital ship Glenart Castle in the Bristol Channel. The ship was carrying many Australian, British, and South African nurses and hospital patients. "'At about four in the morning, when in the neighbourhood of Lundy Island, outward bound, she was struck by a torpedo. She had all her Red Cross lights burning brightly. There could be no mistaking her.” The Germans could have made no mistake, and evidently they did not, as a number of bodies washed onshore with bullet-holes in the life-jackets. The German submariners had shot survivors to cover up what had happened. War is often horrible for all involved, but the destruction of the Glenart Castle was needless cruelty.
