And the Tony Award Goes to...
Tumblr media
Six-Time Tony Winner Audra McDonald, reigning Queen of Broadway
In honor of the Tony nomination announcement today, it's about time I published this post I've had waiting for almost two months now. With 64 Divas in our tournament, they're practically drowning in Tonys. Collectively, 53 Divas have received one or more nominations across four eligible acting categories, and 31 have taken home the prize. And you'll never believe what tumblr's image limit is. 30.
As luck would have it, two Divas won Tonys in the same year and despite what might be the most dramatic height difference possible, Bebe Neuwirth and Janet McTeer were photographed together specifically so I could make this post work 27 years later. (Bebe in heels and Janet in flats, and still...)

Note
do tell us about your favourite tony winning dresses.
I got two of these anon questions about the dresses, so here we go:
Julie White: Best Leading Actress in a Play (2007)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my top choice. I love the pattern, I love the style, I love the way her back is just out. Julie White as a redhead is very pretty and it suits the dress. (But of course, I love her short grey hair. Very queer-coded.)
2. Victoria Clark: Best Leading Actress in a Musical (2023) - Bonus: (2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vicki Clark winning Best Leading Actress in a Musical in a floor-length blue gown that bares her skin. She is just so damn pretty. My favorite is the recent 2023 dress, but look at that backless cut in 2005.
3. Katie Finneran: Best Featured Actress in a Play (2002)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What can I say? I love a lady in red. The asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline is really working for me, and Katie Finneran always has fantastic cleavage for her Tony looks. When she won a second time in 2010, she was pregnant, so they were really something.
4. Harriet Harris: Best Featured Actress in a Musical (2002)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2002 was a great year for Featured Actresses in red, apparently. I also love Harriet Harris's. It's similar, but this one has fun little straps, and it's paired nicely with a flowy shawl. Big fan of shawls. Never leave home without one.
5. Bebe Neuwirth: Best Leading Actress in a Musical (1997)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady in red, how can I resist? I'm especially fond of the asymmetrical mermaid hem, and all the little detailing. What I wouldn't do for an album of HD photos. But of course, it's illegal for anyone who won a tony prior to 2000 to have a quality photo available. Bebe always dresses so well for her figure. She's very petite and straight up and down, and she looks wonderful with her shoulders out.

BROADWAY DIVAS SUPERLATIVES: Stage and Screen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a shamelessly self-indulgent poll. Bernadette Peters as the Stepmother turned your favorite poll runner (me) gay at three years old. The character was subsequently imprinted on me and I've fallen in love with all of them (okay, well maybe not Idina Menzel's because damn that was...yikes to the whole movie...but she's still hot. Actually, looking at it, there are only TWO good adaptations represented here. Damn.)

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Encores! Once Upon a Mattress
January 27, 2024 | NYCC | Encores! Series | Evening | Musical | Concert | 2H 30M
Tumblr media
This one's going to be a little longer than usual, but not as long as it could've been, so you're welcome. I've been listening to the Mary Rodgers memoir, and going in knowing how and why this musical was crafted the way that it was really shed some light on the process. Highly recommend listening to the audiobook (as narrated by Christine Baranski), because it's wildly entertaining at every turn. As for the musical itself? Well... It's a nostalgia piece that does well in high schools all across the country. And that's great. J. Harrison Ghee, great. Nikki Renee Daniels, great. Harriet Harris, so great she had the house screaming with laughter every moment. Worth the entire night just for her.
Sutton Foster was one referred to as "the luckiest chorus girl" and I don't disagree. Sure, she's talented in specific areas. She's a good dancer, and has the breath support to sing whilst doing it. Sing well? Mmm...no. I've never been the biggest fan of her voice, but it was especially weak in this show, and that's shocking because this is kind of a role made for her. It's big and brassy and doesn't need to be sung well, just loud. And she didn't manage to do that. "Shy" was tepid. Jackie Hoffman out-belted her when she did it eight years ago, and she's a comedy legend. Sutton can get the laughs, that's for sure, but it feels so inorganic watching her roll around on stage. Comedy is hard, and Carol Burnett is a master at it. Her schtick will make you cry laughing, and it feels effortless even if it takes so much work. Sutton makes it look like her entire internal monologue is "I'm funny, I'm being so funny right now, I'm doing comedy," on repeat the entire time. Which, fine, sure, it's a show that works with that. I don't actually care that she's too old for this part (just like she's too old for Marian the Librarian) because it's objectively hilarious that a nearly-peri-menopausal woman is going to be the princess of the kingdom and have heirs, but I do care that she's not delivering the goods.
Listen to this "Shy" and then go do yourself a favor and listen to literally anyone else sing it. She gets a semi-powerful belt in at the end, but come on. This is supposed to be her bread and butter.
Verdict: A Lovely Night
