My rules for 2024:
Dieting and health: Any weight above 55kg is unacceptable and I will not be living like this anymore
1. The 1200 calories a day is the maximum amount you should ever ingest, aim for 1000 calories. Never restrict too much, however, you have to study and function well in university.
2. The only drinks you are allowed are black coffee, unsweetened tea and diet coke. A plain latte is only allowed on a date or when hanging out with your friends. This should never be done more than twice a week.
3. Take your multivitamins in order to function well and treat your muscular problems.
4. Stretching is to be done every morning, for at least 10 minutes. It is not much, but it helps. You should walk everywhere, however, never let anyone convince you to take the bus when the destination is at a less than 20 minutes of walking distance. Aim for at least 5000 steps a day.
5. Drink 2l of water a day. Being hydrated is especially important for your skin and body.
6. Eat strategically. Only eat before class, before studying, only when you need the energy food provides. Never waste that energy when it's not necessary.
7. Never order fast food again. Learn how to resist the urge to say yes when it's being proposed. Your roommate is skinny, you are not. She can have it, you cannot.
8. You can indulge in some unhealthy things that bring you joy. Your nicotine addiction is manageable - try to replace cigarettes with vape liquid, it is less pricey and makes your room smell better. Slowly decrease the nicotine concentration until you are ready to completely drop it. The occasional wine is accepted, but count the calories in it and don't overindulge. Never are you to be seen in public smoking or drunk, however. Always keep these flaws secret.
Studying: Medical school is hard and demanding, but it is possible to get through it.
1. Any mark under an 8 is deemed unacceptable and you should strive for the better.
2. You know yourself well. Stop trying to mimic the way other people study, use the method you know has worked for you since the beginning. You are smart and capable.
3. Stick to your schedule religiously. Study every single day except for Saturdays. Every subject is to be revised and valued equally.
4. Start studying for examinations one week before it takes place. Strive for the best marks. Complete projects as soon as they are announced.
5. Always take notes, answer questions and be attentive during class. The people who judge you for this are jealous of your intelligence. Never shut up ever again.
6. Volunteering is essential: it gives you bonus points for future Erasmus projects. Therefore, you should attend such events once a month. Do not prioritize it over your studies, however.
Hobbies: You must have a personality and be cultured, besides being smart. Never let anyone see you as boring.
1. Reading is your favorite activity - aim to read 20 pages a day. Read 40 pages in the weekends. Read fashion magazines as well, in order to stay inspired.
2. Writing - on the weekends, try to write something: an article, a poem, some prose, a blogpost, anything you like. Never let that passion fade away.
3. Limit TV shows to 40 minutes per day, watch a movie on the weekend.
4. Go out to see the opera, a museum or an art exposition every month.
5. Stay up to date with the news in the industries that matter to you!!
Personality and Social Life: Things are going great, but they can be improved.
1. Always keep your cool. Never are you to rage in public ever again. People respect you, don't mess this up. You must always wear a confident smile, never show your weak side in public.
2. Be friendly and helpful. Always say hi when walking past someone you know and engage in conversations with your colleagues. However, you are not to overshare with people you do not know well. Keep the conversations going about themselves, not yourself, unless asked about.
3. Help people out whenever you are directly asked for. However, do not overdo it. Put yourself first.
4. Do not talk ill about anyone unless it's with your close friends or significant other. This can be used against you anytime.
5. Never seem too available. Only hang out if your schedule allows you to. Never fall into the trap of "study gatherings" as you know well you function better individually.
6. Keep in touch with your close ones daily. Ask about their day, show them that you care.
7. Hangouts must be limited to twice a week. You must only hang out with your boyfriend once a week. It hurts, but it keeps you both focused on your work.
8. Don't PDA at university, please. This has to stop once and for all. Limit it to hand holding and sitting together at less important courses. Do not show people how needy you are.
9. People who lack certain morals and are not compatible with you from this point of view should not be part of your life. Their negative energy impacts you a lot. Only speak to them if directly approached.
10. Don't be late, it's unacceptable. You must be present 10 minutes before the start of an event.
11. Never are you to be seen in nightclubs or places that may damage your reputation. If it doesn't characterize you to be in that place, stay home. Do not fear missing out on anything, you already saw enough.
12. Use social media for only 30 minutes daily.
Looks: Being put together is the key to success. It teaches you discipline.
1. Skincare must be done twice a day, morning and night. Keep it simple but consistent, as your skin is not compatible to harsh chemicals. Apply perfume and body sprays.
2. Makeup should be kept to a minimum, unless it's a special occasion: eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow gel, lip liner and lip gloss is the perfect recipe.
3. Your hair must be lustrous and well kept. Wear it down most of the time. Do a cute hairstyle once a week.
4. You must always be dressed up for the occasion: always wear preppy academic outfits to university, something more playful and fun when you go out, your lounge wear and pajamas should still be cute. Even if nobody sees you, you still can see yourself.
5. Buy some new clothes every month. Change it up, do not seem repetitive with your outfits.
6. Your clothes must always smell good, be meticulously ironed and fresh.
7. Never are you to wear the same outfit again in a week. People notice and you must not seem lazy.
8. You have to take care of yourself every week: shave, paint your nails and toenails, exfoliate, apply a face mask, wash your hair.
9. Shower every other day instead of every day as your skin dries out. After every shower, use lotions for your body. You must always smell like a cake.

As preparations for the tour ramp up, so does the amount of time you spend working.
You’re still doing double time, assisting with schedules while staying up late at our desk to reply to emails and finalise details for the tour. You resort to alternating between sipping on tea and energy drinks to help you stay awake long enough to finish all your work. Even though you don’t like the way they make you feel, jittery and sometimes nauseous, it’s the only way that you’re able to meet your deadlines. Everyone on your team is feeling stressed these days and not even the snacks that the company sometimes provides are enough to bring a smile to people’s faces.
The only person that consistently stays later than you is Chan. He has practically become a permanent fixture in his studio and you’re starting to just barely meet the minimum recommended Charging times. It’s not bad enough that you’re concerned, you just watch what you’re eating and make sure that you’re getting enough calories to keep your energy levels up.
You keep a more careful eye on Chan’s diet too, although you don’t interfere because you know he has his own goals for the condition of his body. You make sure that the snacks and drinks he likes are always provided during schedules, that there’s always food available to eat in his studio, and bring dinner to him more often than not.
The two of you are on good terms, even if you don’t have a chance to hang out as often doing anything other than working or eating. In fact, you’re probably closer than you were before. Chan doesn’t treat you any differently, but there was a deeper understanding that was shared between the two of you.
You’re relieved that after so many nights you spent worrying about Chuseok, you no longer felt like you were hiding something from him. There’s an unspoken agreement not to bring up anything about your eomoni’s treatment of you. You don’t think that you’ll ever see eye-to-eye on the subject, but you had expected that. You know how bad your relationship looks from an outsider’s perspective, but to you it’s complicated in a way that you don’t know how to put into words.
The first concerts for the tour were held in Seoul, so you didn’t think that you’d be as heavily involved. You’re honestly not too sure what to expect from your first time helping out backstage, but you never could have imagined the chaos.
During the first night, everyone was relieved that things went relatively smoothly onstage, but there were a lot of small problems that had to be resolved on the fly and need to be relooked at again. It means that, although the audience and the members had a great time, all the staff were exhausted by the end of the concert. You spent most of the time running back and forth basically as a stagehand, as it was too short notice for you to explain fixes for many of the issues that came up and easier for you to just do it yourself. You hadn’t realised how involved you were in the run of show, but over the months you had become familiar enough with all the little details that to be busy all night.
Cleaning up was another beast. Everything had to be packed away after each concert, but it seems like all the equipment has multiplied and there aren’t nearly enough containers to put them into. With all the troubleshooting, things weren't where you thought they would be or had been modified and could no longer be stored the way they were previously. It felt like a more intricate game of jenga with costumes, accessories, and equipment that were thousands of dollars.
Debrief was at least a chance for a physical break, but it’s another hour of discussion with your team on what could have been improved and what went well before you’re allowed to go home. You fell asleep in the car ride and Eunsung has to shake you awake when he drops you off in front of the dorms. You’re severely tempted to close your eyes during the elevator ride, but force yourself to stay conscious. You barely make out a greeting to the members, before collapsing on the couch, grateful to finally be sitting.
At least they’re all in an infectiously good mood, even if a few of them had cried from all the emotions during the encore. Their boost of energy cheers you up a bit and after a bit of time resting, you’re happy to join them for a very late meal. They eagerly recount everything that happened during the concert and talk over each other trying to share funny stories of mishaps or entertaining things they noticed in the crowd.
As tiring as it was for you, you think that it’s all worth it. It’s been a while since you’ve seen the members so excited, and as you were exiting the arena, there were a number of Stays that you had encountered, all of them equally as thrilled.
Working in the office is reprieve from the craziness of the concerts. The second show was fairly similar to the first, but a bit smoother and with that it was more fun. You knew better what to expect and found yourself enjoying the chaos instead of getting swept away. But even though you enjoyed the experience overall and are still looking forward to the rest of the tour, you now have a better appreciation for the quiet. You're definitely relieved that the initial tour planning gave a bit of time between the Seoul, Japan, and international concerts.
The next month before you have to leave for Japan is critical, not just for you but also the members. It feels like you barely see any of them outside of the company anymore. Even though they've just had a comeback recently, they're already preparing songs for the next one and juggling that with attending brand events, doing solo interviews, and photoshoots for magazines.
Chan has never complained about any of it, but you know that their growing popularity means more pressure and that's taking a toll on all of them. 3Racha spend hours going back and forth perfecting portions of songs before sending them for approval, more members try to get involved in songwriting, and everyone devotes their free time to vocal lessons, dance practice, and working out.
You know that they've been offered more days off, but were adamant to keep the schedules as tightly packed as possible. You're proud of them and understand why they've chosen this, but you're also concerned. The only thing you can do is support them and cheer them on, knowing that doing your job well will help them do their job.
It's just before 12:30 in the morning when you finally decide to save everything and turn off your computer. Although you're used to the long days and late nights, an early morning schedule means that you have to be back at the JYP building by at least 6 am to prepare, an hour earlier than the call time for the boys. You quickly pack your bag and make your way down to Chan's studio, where he's doubtlessly still working.
Sure enough, when you knock on his door and gently ease it open, Chan has his headphones on and barely nods a greeting before focusing back on his laptop. Knowing that your presence is enough of a signal for him to get ready to leave, you flop down onto his couch and pull up your thread of texts with one of the company drivers.
You feel guilty but the recent cold weather and ever present threat of sasaengs camping outside of the building mean that he's used to all the late night requests. A fan had recently cornered Chan as he had left one day and had later posted about their encounter, leading to an increasing number of people loitering around the main exit, hoping for a glimpse of any of the members. Although there hadn’t really been any issues, it was enough that the JYPE had sent out a company-wide email about being more vigilant on keeping track of who is walking in and out of the building, as well as more security for the time being.
[12:32 am - sent]
Sorry, Chan-ssi and I will need a ride back to the dorms soon!
[12:34 am - received]
K. Just let me know when you're ready and I will pick you up.
[12:34 am - sent]
Thanks! You're the best! I'll let you know when we're about to head down.
Satisfied, you switch to one of your guilty pleasures, scrolling through Twitter.
Your first account had been created before you worked at JYP and was used to keep up with some of your friends. You had made your second account when you started working with Xdinary Heroes as a show of support and also to get more insight on the fans to better cater to them. Now, that account and the newest one you had for Stray Kids were purely for fun. Sure, it was sometimes useful for work to see what piqued interest the most and what people were complaining about, but you mostly wanted to see people's reactions to content, it saved you money from subscribing to Bubble, and you could bookmark fanart that you thought the members might like to see.
You didn't post much and if you did, made sure nobody would be able to deduce that you were part of the staff. Your profile was generic and you followed a mix of Korean, English, and Japanese accounts, as well as some of the popular translation ones.
Everyone was excited for the upcoming Japan tour dates, especially after the recent Seoul concerts. The preview for the Japanese merch had just been released today so it dominated your timeline. Even though you haven't been on in a few days, you're glad to see there's still a lot of posts from the concert and that so many people, regardless of whether they were able to attend, enjoyed the show.
Technically you had been there and there were a few screens scattered around that were streaming what was happening on stage, but all the staff were so busy that you had only been able to catch a few glimpses of the performances. Based on your conversations with other managers and coordis, it would continue similarly for the next few concerts as new issues arose and would have to be solved on the spot. You were hoping that you'd have a chance to be part of the crowd for at least one night sometime this tour.
After scrolling for about 15 minutes, you lower your phone a little bit to peek and see what Chan's doing. He’s still working on a song and doesn’t look close to stopping. You frown, usually he’s pretty good about wrapping up his work shortly after you arrive.
“Channie-oppa,” you call, keeping your tone light. “Are you almost done?”
“Yup,” he says absentmindedly, not even pausing in the work that he’s doing. You stare at him for a moment, but give him the benefit of the doubt. You know there’s more pressure on him than usual, there’s looming deadlines for their next album and limited time to do everything with preparations for the rest of the concerts. Even if it means sacrificing a little bit of energy, you don’t mind giving him some extra time.
After you notice 15 more minutes have passed, you bite your lip, not wanting to interrupt again, but also wanting to get home to rest and Charge for as long as possible. With a press junket scheduled to start early in the morning and continue for most of the day, you know that Chan has a long day ahead of him, and that yours was going to be even longer since you had to arrive before the members to help set up everything.
It’s when the driver you had contacted sends you a text asking for an estimate on when you want to be picked up, that you decide to speak up.
“Hey, how much longer do you think you’ll be?”
“You can go home first,” Chan says instead of answering your question.
"Tomorrow your schedule starts-" you start to explain, but get cut off.
"I know," Chan says, sounding annoyed. He finally turns around to face you and tugs his headphones off roughly. "But this is important, I need to finish as much as I can right now, okay?"
"I’m saying this for your benefit. You'll be able to work better after you rest. I think it would be good if you took a break tonight."
"I'm good now!” he snaps. “I'm really good now. I was also good when you were not here. When you weren’t my soulmate. I worked as much as I wanted. I did things I liked. Even without you, I was fine every day."
"I- '' You swallow hard and look down, biting the inside of your cheek hard. Without anything for your hands to do, your fingers find a hangnail on your thumb and pick at it. "I just want to help you."
"Thanks, I don't need it,” he says, exasperated. “You really don't have to do these things for me. I can order my own dinner. I can choose when I want to work and when I want to stop. If I need to check my calendar, I can look it up by myself. You aren't family. You aren't my girlfriend. Yes, you’re a manager for Stray Kids. Yes, you're my soulmate, but you don't have to…. try to do everything, you know? It’s enough for you to just live your own life and do your job as a manager, but you don’t have to do anything extra.”
You make a small noise of acknowledgement, but the sound comes out with difficulty. Your throat is tight and aching while your nose is starting to stuff up, making it harder to breathe normally. You blink rapidly to keep your vision clear, eyes stinging. You know crying won’t do anything to change the situation except maybe make it worse, but you can’t help it. You’re almost glad when Chan continues on without waiting for a reply, as you don’t think you’d be able to say anything if he wanted you to.
“I know you think you know what this industry is like after 3 years, but you don’t. I was a trainee for 7 years, I’ve been an idol for longer than you've worked here. I know better than anyone what my limits are. You've told me how controlled you felt when you used to live at home, but sometimes I can’t help but think that some of your eomoni’s methods have rubbed off on you. I don't need someone constantly nagging me about this and that. I don’t need you bringing me food just because you think I need it. I don’t need you reminding me about schedules. I don't need you sitting around my studio trying to get me to go home when I'm not finished with my work. And I definitely don’t need or want you telling me when I should be taking a break, resting, not working, sleeping, all of that. Please, please, can’t you just leave me alone?”
“I’m sorry.” Your voice sounds wet and thick and cracks in the middle of your words. Not knowing what else to do, you bow in apology and are grateful that your face is hidden when you realise that the tears that have gathered at the corners of your eyes have finally fallen. You wipe them hurriedly, feeling mortified, but Chan hasn’t even noticed, already turned towards his laptop and with his headphones back in place. Even though he can’t hear you, you still say, “I’ll just go ho- back to the dorm now.”
As expected, he doesn't reply.
You must have subconsciously backed up when Chan's tone had risen, because you were now only a couple steps away from the exit, making your retreat easier. You close the door behind you as quietly as possible and beeline to the bathroom.
The harsh glare of the fluorescent lights hurt your eyes and exaggerate the redness of your face when you stand at the sink and stare at yourself. Where the skin was worried away on your thumb, there are now smudged beads of blood that you wash away. You splash your face with water to wipe away your tears, then press a soaked paper towel against your eyes to try to cool down the swollen skin there. When you look at yourself in the mirror, you almost laugh at the pitiful expression that stares back at you. It reminds you of all the times you did this when you were younger after conversations with your eomoni, meticulously applying make-up to hide any signs of weakness. You had gotten better over the years, at cleaning yourself up carefully and preventing yourself from crying in the first place.
After blowing your nose, you leave and head toward the building’s lobby. You don’t think that you can face anybody else tonight, so you text the company driver again, telling him that you’re getting a ride with someone else but that Chan would probably still need to get a ride home a bit later. You don't wait for confirmation before locking your phone and dropping it into your bag.
For once, you’re grateful for the cool air as you step outside the doors, the usually biting winds feel refreshing against your hot skin. At this time of night, there aren’t many people around, which means nobody pays attention as you start walking towards the dorms.
You take deep breaths to try and calm yourself down, pressing your cold hands against your cheeks which are still flushed with emotion.
You feel humiliated. Had you really come across as that desperate and overbearing in your interactions with Chan?
One of your eomoni’s favourite ‘reminders’ to you growing up was that you were too much.
You were too emotional, too dramatic, too sensitive. You spent too much time daydreaming, imagining a future for yourself that would never happen. You were too open with people, too trusting.
People don’t want that, she would say. They want you to be polite and quiet. You can have opinions, just keep them to yourself. You spend too much time doing whatever you want and not enough time listening to what people are telling you to do. You're expected to be obedient. Don't overstep.
It hurt to know that maybe there was truth in her words. It was clear now that you had done more than overstep.
Chan had sounded stressed, angry, and his tone had been cold, much sharper than you had ever heard before. He had been cruel, even. But what had caught you off guard the most was the deep-rooted frustration that you had heard. It meant that this likely wasn't the first time that he had thought these things, it was just the first time he had shared them with you. It was a wound that had been festering and he was just now exposing it for you to see.
You hate that you had caused that.
You also couldn’t help but feel embarrassed by your display of emotions in Chan’s studio. You hoped that he hadn’t noticed, but found it hard to believe that he couldn’t tell your voice was more choked up than usual. You used to pride yourself in having full control of your emotions, but had found yourself caught off guard so many times since you had met your soulmate.
You had become too soft-hearted and you hate that too.
Mechanically, you let yourself into the dorms and complete your nighttime routine as quietly as possible. All the other members are home, but their doors are closed and lights are off. Exhausted and emotionally drained, you curl up on your side of the bed and close your eyes, willing yourself to fall asleep quickly.
The wound on your thumb stings.

[AO3] [Part 2 (coming soon)]
Tumblr media
From the back seat of your friend’s car, you aren’t sure which is louder: the sound of Cyndi Lauper from the stereo or the voices of your friends building over one another, chattering about who they were hoping to run into at this party and whether or not Steve Harrington was officially on the market again after the big blow out on Halloween.
Your group, comprised of queen bee Cynthia and her loyal subjects Dawn and Heather, couldn’t be more excited for this frat party Cynthia managed to score an invite to. You, however, are dreading it.
These things have always made you uncomfortable. The drunken socializing and constant swatting of hands away from your ass (why did they always default to groping?), the dull attempt at small talk that preceded an even more pitiful drunken attempt at a kiss. You thought, at least, when you moved up to attending college parties the conversations might get a little bit more substantial (or at least entertaining), but to no such luck. Yeah, you dreaded it all, but going to these things came with the territory of being part of the in-crowd, which is…apparently something you care about. You have to if you want to make it to graduation unscathed, so you tend to just sit down, shut up, and let the queen tell you where to go and what to do and how to look while doing it.
You’re anxiously picking at the hem of your flared denim skirt when the car comes to an abrupt, screeching halt. Not expecting to have arrived already, you look up in confusion, only to be partially blinded by the neon greeting of a 7-Eleven sign. Of course, how could you forget? Not only did you have to attend these things, but you had to provide the vultures with sustenance too.
Turning in the driver’s seat, Cynthia raises her brows expectantly, glittery blue eyeshadow reflecting the light seeping into the window, and says, “we need a mixer for Heather’s vodka stash, something low calorie but sweet. OH! And Corn Nuts. It’s not a party without Corn Nuts.”
“And I suppose it’s my turn to buy again?” You huff, barely holding back an eye roll.
From the passenger seat, Dawn snickers and eyes you in the vanity mirror, “well you are the only one of us with a job, after all.”
There’s no point in arguing, so you just give a curt nod and shove open the door with your shoulder, grumbling under your breath all the way to the door. You almost make it all the way in before there’s another ungodly screech from the open car window.
“Make sure to get the BQ this time!”
The only response she gets is a thumbs up thrust her way that turns into a bird the second the door closes and hides you from view.
“Only one with a job my ass, Dawn,” you grumble as you browse the coolers. “Like my minimum wage cashier gig at the Gap is better than your daddy’s weekly allowance.”
Circling back to the front, you grab a couple of bags of Cynthia’s chosen snack and tuck them under your arm, and then get distracted and pour yourself a Diet Coke from the fountain. You take your time browsing, sipping the drink in your hand and placing one foot in front of the other on the checkered tiles, effectively putting off your arrival at the party. Good news for you, abysmal for your friends in the car who are now laying on the horn.
You’re glaring into the cooler and chewing on your straw when the horn sounds again. You scoff, and a dark chuckle from next to you makes you jump.
Turning quickly towards the sound you find Eddie Munson, Slurpee in hand, his smirking lips tinted a faint blue from the flavored ice. He’s leaning against the cooler door, head cocked, looking down at you with amusement. Though you didn’t often talk, his reputation precedes him and you know exactly what to expect before he even speaks – sarcasm and a dry, annoying wit. A year ahead of you, or at least he should have been if he actually graduated last year like he was supposed to, Eddie Munson is the exact opposite of the crowd you’re used to, lurking in the shadows and hanging out with the DnD club rather than on the sidelines with your pom-pom wielding peers. However this close up, he looks harmless, charming even when his smirk persists but his eyes soften.
“Trouble in paradise?” He asks, a smooth, teasing lilt to his voice.
You huff in response, yanking a bottle of diet limeade off the shelf a little too harshly. “That suggests that there’s never not trouble.” The cooler door slams shut, a burst of chilled air sending the boy’s wild curls fluttering around his face. “...but no more than usual, if that’s what you’re asking.”
He hums, a thoughtful little sound in the back of his throat, and pushes away from the coolers, falling into a swaggering step beside you. One hand stuffed in the pocket of his leather jacket, he offers the slurpee up to you with the other and gives it a little shake. “Nothing a little processed sugar can’t help, I’m sure.”
“Please,” you snort, pushing his hand away. “I know you’ve got something stronger than that.” Your cheeks heat at the boldness in your voice, unsure of what made you even say it, but judging by the quiet sound of surprise, you’ve caught him off guard too, so you’ll take that as a win.
He cuts you off when you pass the fountain machines again and hops up onto the counter like he owns the place, settling into his makeshift seat with a content sigh and reaching behind his head to pull another cup from the dispenser.
“Did you say Cherry or Blue Raspberry?”
Sizing him up with a stare, you push, “I didn’t.”
“C’mon, sweetheart,” he urges, the pet name sounding sweet and sour and playful on his lips. He leans over and fills the cup with bright red slush anyway, despite your protest. “Never underestimate the rush of a good brain freeze. Try it.”
Though you glare the whole time, you do end up unloading your arms and take the drink from his hands. Leaning your hip on the counter beside his softly kicking legs, you take a long pull from the cherry flavored ice. You roll your eyes at the intent stare he fixes you with as you drink and swallow with a loud, dramatic, “ahh!”
“I dunno, Munson,” you sigh, “I think I’d still prefer it with a little nip.”
“Yeah well,” he takes a long drink of his own, much longer than yours, and squints against the oncoming headache. “You gotta try a little harder. Little sips aren’t gonna do it for you.” From outside, there’s another long, loud blow on the car horn that has you squeezing your eyes shut in dread. Eddie nudges you with his knee, “give it another go. A real one, this time. If you still insist it doesn’t do anything for you, I’ll send you on your way to wherever the Diet-Cokeheads are dragging you and we’ll never speak of it again, but is that really how you want to spend your Saturday night?”
You know he’s got you pegged. This party really is the last thing you want to be doing tonight, but your so-called-friend honking outside demands it, and if you don’t want to suffer the wrath of a high school clique scorned, you should probably just comply. Through the window of the shop you can see a very angry Cynthia shoving Dawn out of the car, shouting and pointing at you, though you can’t hear what she’s saying through the glass.
That settles it.
Tempting your fate, you pull the straw back to your lips, smirking around it at the boy in front of you and taking another drink. Longer, faster, taking in much more ice than your first attempt. You feel silly, stupid, a little like the sugar is going to make you throw up but even worse, the cold is electrifying. Your throat burns with it, feeling the chill all the way down your chest and into your stomach, the brief pain shooting up your spine and into your brain. When the ache settles in, you shut your eyes tight and wrinkle your nose, instinctually reaching for whatever is in front of you and squeezing. Whatever is in front of you just happens to be a denim-covered knee.
The ring of the bell above the door mixes with Eddie's triumphant laughter and the sound of both has your hand retreating so quickly you’d think his touch burned you, despite the goosebumps still prickling your skin. Your heart pounds, head still throbbing at the dull freeze, you scoop your purchases back into your arms and turn on your heel as Dawn approaches.
“Hey,” she sneers, “Cyn wants your ass back to the car, pronto. She says the Kappas won’t wait around all night.” She and Eddie are both hot on your heels as you approach the counter and she definitely takes notice. “What’s with the freak?”
Eddie snorts, backing off a step or two. “You don’t own the corner store, princess,” he leers, “can’t a guy just get a drink in peace?”
“Not when I see you scamming on my friend in the process. Was he bothering you, babe?”
You’re listening to them bicker as you count out your money, the leftover cherry flavor in your mouth turning bitter as you realize how little you’ll be left with after this snack run, but that comment was enough to bring you into the conversation.
“Chill out, Dawn,” you sigh, “he was just making small talk. It’s nothing.”
“Sure,” she pops her gum in punctuation, brows raised in concern, but she couldn’t care less when the horn sounds again and sends her scrambling back to the car with a clipped shout of, “just hurry!”
When the door closes behind her and the cashier hands over your receipt, you hang your head in defeat.
The soft mutter of, “guess you’d better get going then,” is a lot closer behind you than you expect and it makes you jump. Eddie snickers again, rubber toe of his boot kicking lightly at your heel, and when you turn he plucks at one of your suspenders teasingly. It snaps back into place against your white tee shirt with a sharp sting, and you can feel your skin warming even more.
Your pulse races with indecision, eyes flicking between the car outside and the boy in front of you. He lifts his chin in question, holding out your forgotten slurpee with a grin full of mischief.
It’s with a weak groan and a moment of mourning for your social life that you stomp out to Cynthia’s car, open the passenger door and dump the bags of snacks into Dawn’s lap. She scoffs in protest, but it’s Cynthia who speaks up.
“What’s your damage?” She ducks lower to meet your hard stare. “Get in the damn car we have to go.”
“Go without me. I’m suddenly not feeling well.”
“Oh, boo,” Cynthia whines with no actual sympathy in her voice, bringing one hand off the steering wheel to mimic wiping away her crocodile tears. You swear she mutters something else as Dawn slams her door shut and they peel away, but you can’t be bothered to decipher what it is.
You can feel Eddie’s warmth behind you before he actually makes his presence known.
“About that ‘something stronger’ you wanted,” He starts, passing the paper cup over your shoulder again. You turn to peer up at him and he nods over to the busted up van he’s known for. “Need a ride?”

I just wanted some genuine suggestions for losing weight without burning out my body and harming it. Since you are one of the most mature Tumblrina I know, I thought of asking you. You don't have to answer if you aren't comfortable.
thank you for your trust hun❤️ and for the tentative approach to a sensitive subject.
i learned a lot when i was on my own weight loss journey and i can genuinely give some sound advice on how to approach it in a healthy way.
depending on your starting point, i would suggest skipping working out entirely in the beginning. you can walk, 10k steps a day i still swear by, and that's cardio almost everyone can do. again, i don't know your starting point so if we're talking severely overweight start off slow, don't force your joints. just regular walking, no sprinting, running etc.
working out, even cardio stuff believe it or not is more for toning towards the end of weight loss journey and afterwards. everyone thinks hitting the gym is gonna help them lose weight when in fact it can do you a lot more harm than good especially at the beginning. you burn very little calories with an extreme amount of effort, making you even more hungry and prone to overeat, you're gonna end up bulking up your muscle mass and not really getting rid of the fat, plus, again, it can be extremely taxing on your joints and overall health if you push yourself too much too fast.
nutrition is the key with weight loss and i'm tired of ppl trying to sell working out to those who are desperate to make a change.
however it's not as easy as "just don't eat as much", unfortunately. and if you're like me and have other things hindering your process, in my case, insulin resistence, then it's really not simple at all.
you gotta try and see what works best for you but there are some things that benefit everyone regardless of their specific needs.
first of all, you gotta be in a caloric deficit. there are a lot of online calculators where you enter your current weight, age, gender, height and your weight goal, and it calculates what your daily caloric intake should be for you to get there as realistically as possible while still mentaining a healthy dose of nutrients.
which leads me to number two on the list, macros (those calculators will tell you what your daily macros should be too). you wanna look up meals that are high protein low cal. you'll be amazed how some easy changes to your diet can make such a big difference! download myfitnesspal (an app) where you can track everything you eat, buy a food scale so you can weigh everything and this way you can ensure you reach your macros for the day (protein, fats, fibers and carbs) while staying within your daily caloric deficit. which btw, should never go bellow 1100-1200 no matter how fast you're trying to lose weight! there's no way you can reach your macros if you do that and you'll be malnourished, you'll lose muscle mass not just fat and you'll also end up with lose skin if you starve yourself.
which leads me to number three, don't starve yourself!!! you won't be able to sustain it for a long period of time and you'll end up binge eating every several days, which will erase all the "progress" anyway. trust me.
allow yourself a lil cheat meal every once in a while so you don't grow frustrated(careful to remain within your daily calorie intake, carbs and fats will probably skyrocket but at least try and get smth high protein)
drink lots and lots of water at least 3-4 liters daily (not all at once!!! this is very dangerous and i just wanted to clarify!) it makes a world of a difference!
try and get your 10k steps in if you can but even without that if you're in a defiict you WILL lose weight
you can also try intermittent fasting. i wouldn't recommend one meal a day. try at least two. the way it works is you try and not eat at all for as long as possible and then only eat in the ramaining timeframe. most ppl do 16-8 or 18-6. meaning you fast 16/18 hours and only eat in the remaining consecutive 8/6 hours. this eliminates snacking. which is important in terms of glicemic spikes. your body needs downtime between meals, if you keep feeding it and snacking however little every few hrs you keep getting spikes in your blood sugar and you won't lose weight. sometimes even if you're in a significant deficit. skipping breakfast is easiest, but you could skip dinner if it makes more sense for you. but make sure you hit your macros in the remaining timeframe. if you can't manage that, intermittent fasting is not for you
this is, in very rough lines, what i consider essential. keep at it for a month and you'll see results and will be motivated to continue! i hope it helps ❤️

Realistic Weight Gain Goals: What to Expect in a Month
Introduction
Setting reasonable goals for weight gain is essential to maintaining a healthy and long-lasting strategy. While it’s normal to want to see results right away, it’s important to know how much weight you may actually acquire in a month. This article will address this subject in simple terms and give you a clear grasp of what to anticipate as you embark on your weight-gain journey.
The factor at play
Before delving into the numbers, it’s critical to understand that gaining weight can be influenced by a number of variables, including genetics, metabolism, level of activity, and food. These elements influence how your body adjusts to changes and how quickly you put on weight.
1. Gradual and sustainable approach
It’s not only healthier but also more enduring to aim for a moderate weight increase . An unhealthful rise in body fat and related health problems might result from rapid weight gain. Aim for a gradual, moderate rate of weight gain, as this is often advised.
2. Caloric surplus
You must eat more calories each day than your body expels in order to gain weight. A healthy weight gain of approximately 0.5 to 1 pound per week is possible with a caloric surplus of between 250 and 500 extra calories per day. This can result in anywhere between 2 and 4 pounds of weight gain over the course of a month.
3. Muscle vs. fat
The difference between gaining muscle and increasing fat must be made. Proper strength exercise and enough protein intake are both necessary for muscular growth. Your physique and general health can benefit from gaining muscle. However, acquiring too much fat too rapidly can have negative health effects.
4. Hydration and water weight
Your daily weight readings on the scale can fluctuate depending on your water weight. Temporary weight increases that don’t always correspond to true fat gain might be caused by things like dehydration, sodium intake, and hormone shifts.
5. Individual differences
Everybody’s body reacts differently, so keep that in mind. Due to a variety of reasons, some people may gain weight more quickly while others may progress more slowly. Focusing on your own journey is more effective than comparing your progress to others.
6. Avoid crash diets
Negative effects may result from engaging in severe dieting or binge eating in an effort to acquire weight quickly. Your body can be harmed and you may experience long-term health problems if you gain weight quickly through improper eating habits.
7. Tracking progress
Track your progress using several techniques in addition to the scale, rather than relying exclusively on it. Take measurements, keep an eye on how your clothing fits, and evaluate how you’re feeling in terms of your mood, energy level, and general health
8. Patience and consistency
On your journey to weight gain, patience is key. It takes time for sustainable improvements to produce noticeable effects. Rapid changes are not as vital as consistency in your eating and workout routines.
9. Protein-Rich Diet
Give your diet enough protein to assist muscle growth and repair. Poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, lentils, and vegan proteins like tofu and tempeh are all sources of lean protein.
Conclusion

just saw someone describe vegetables as 'difficult to prepare' (completely subjective, depends on your tastes, and also vegetables can generally be eaten raw without giving you listeria or salmonella but sure) but also as 'more expensive per calorie and go bad faster than other foods'. the second claim is puzzling me though because i think 'going bad faster' depends on how you store it (vegetables are so easy to freeze for example, but even kept in the fridge if you do it right they'll be fine for a week unless they were old to begin with) but the 'more expensive per calorie' part i've never really thought about because i generally associate meat (except for the cheapest of cheap cuts) as being far more expensive and i'm wondering if there's any way for someone to substantiate the claim that vegetables cost more? this person didn't provide any sources for the claim and i don't really know where to start on a price comparison per calorie
Well they're difficult to prepare if you don't know what you're doing. I wouldn't have the first idea how to properly cook and season a steak or a piece of chicken, so for me they would be difficult to prepare. Whereas in my case, vegetables are incredibly easy - you often don't even need to cook them. Many vegetables, pulses and grains keep fresh for ages (months in the case of canned, frozen and many grains), and if you screw it up, unlike meat, you're unlikely to get food poisoning and potentially become seriously ill.
I seriously doubt this person doesn't already prepare a good amount of vegetables, unless they're eating terribly. Chances are good that this person is thinking about very specific vegetables they associate with a 'vegan diet,' as opposed to the potatoes and rice they associate with their own food. Quality fresh produce can for sure be expensive, but it's still not even comparable to fresh, high quality meat. Besides, why compare meat to veg at all - why not meat with faux meat, and compare that preperation process?
The price per calorie claim is pretty toothless. Price per calorie of what meat? What vegetable? Where? What time of year? Why is price per calorie a relevant measurement of cost and value for money? Should we be recommending people buy pure fat and lard instead of chicken, because it's cheaper? The fact that many animal products are extremely high calorie is not exactly an uncomplicatedly good thing, since high calorie does not equal nutritious, and low calorie doesn't mean not nutritious either.
You can readily accept that in some cases, meat will be cheaper per calorie than vegetables. But... so what? More expensive per calorie does not equal less affordable, as a metric it certainly doesn't translate to a plant-based diet being more expensive. We can also all agree that fruit and vegetables should be cheaper, and to do that we could start with removing the massive subsidies on meat and dairy and applying them to fruit and vegetables instead. So what is the actual argument here?

Title: The Thick and The Lean Author: Chana Porter Genre/s: science fiction Content/Trigger Warning/s: cults, eating disorders, sexual harassment, death, murder, earthquakes, racism Summary (from author's page): In the quaint religious town of Seagate, abstaining from food brings one closer to God.
But Beatrice Bolano is hungry. She craves the forbidden: butter, flambé, marzipan. As Seagate takes increasingly extreme measures to regulate every calorie its citizens consume, Beatrice must make a choice: give up her secret passion for cooking or leave the only community she has known.
Elsewhere, Reiko Rimando has left her modest roots for a college tech scholarship in the big city. A flawless student, she is set up for success…until her school pulls her funding, leaving her to face either a mountain of debt or a humiliating return home. But Reiko is done being at the mercy of the system. She forges a third path—outside of the law.
With the guidance of a mysterious cookbook written by a kitchen maid centuries ago, Beatrice and Reiko each grasp for a life of freedom—something more easily imagined than achieved in a world dominated by catastrophic corporate greed. Buy Here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-thick-and-the-lean-chana-porter/18667830 Spoiler-Free Review: Another book that took me a while to write a review on because I had to turn over things in my head before I could get down on paper what I was thinking. Been a while since I read any of these books in succession, and I think I need more of them in my life.
Anyway: I think most people who've written reviews about this book have already mentioned how it tackles the relationship with food, and how it relates to diet culture, and how diet culture as been the basis for cultish behavior/actual cults (I like this episode from Cult Podcast about Jillian Epperly and Jilly Juice - just note that this podcast might slant more humorous than some people like while dealing with serious subject matter, and this particular episode makes liberal references to bodily functions that some people might not want to hear about in certain situations). This novel just takes it to an extreme, with an extra layer of factory town on top. Which, when you really think about it, a factory town isn't really all that different from a cult situation now, is it?
And while all that's definitely important to think about, and the book certainly puts it front and center, I was more drawn to the parallels between the two main characters, Beatrice and Reiko: specifically, how Beatrice seems to "ascend" in terms of the trajectory of her story and development, whereas Reiko's is a "descent".
It doesn't seem that way at first though. In fact, at first it feels like the opposite: Beatrice "descends", while Reiko "ascends", so to speak, when comparing the trajectories of their stories in the first third of the novel. But as the novel goes on, it becomes clear that while Beatrice's story is a "descent" in terms of her material circumstances, it is a clear "ascent" in terms of her inner life and her ability to be true to herself and the world. On the flipside, Reiko's story appears to be an "ascent" in terms of her material circumstances, but is a clear "descent" in terms of her inner life and her ability to be truthful to herself and the world.
I suspect that I derived this metaphor from the way the way the City is portrayed in the novel: as one becomes wealthier, one "ascends" through the layers of society until one lives in the air itself, like an angel whose feet never touch the ground. But that kind of ascent is not necessarily good for one's soul; sometimes you have to touch grass in order to be a better person, instead of being so detached from the world that you forget it - and everyone else living in it - exists, and become absorbed entirely in nothing but your own personal concerns.
While these comparisons are of course interesting, and highlight different aspects of the world in the novel (as well as similar ideas that are happening in the real world right now), I found myself wishing that Reiko's story had been given the space of an entirely different book. Not to say that it's badly-told, or that it's a bad story; I just think that it doesn't rest as comfortably alongside Beatrice's story as I would like. While the themes and concerns of their stories do have some overlaps, I truly feel like Reiko's story is a completely separate beast from Beatrice's, and deserves to have its own room to breathe, as it were. Maybe this book could have been done as a pair of matched novellas, as opposed to one whole novel? This is just my own thought of course, since the author knows what they want to do with their book and it's not my place to tell them how to execute the story they want to tell.
That being said: I liked the uncertainty of their respective endings. The novel talks a lot about change and how to bring it about: whether that's change in oneself, or change in the world around oneself, and the uncertain endings for both Beatrice and Reiko are a reminder of how such change never really comes into being unless one continues to do the work. It's also a reminder that though stories end, life continues: it doesn't stop moving just because the storyteller decided to write "The End" at the bottom of the page. It's an important reminder, I think, to people who are on the front lines of initiating and creating change in the world: sometimes the ending of one story is just the beginning of another, and with that comes all the potential for change and uncertainty as one would expect from the start of any story.
So overall, this was a great read: the language in particular is lovely, especially where it focuses on food descriptions. However, I think it bites off a bit more than it can chew. Beatrice’s story is great, and Reiko’s story is great, and the idea of using The Kitchen Girl to both world-build and connect their two disparate stories is pretty damn cool, but I rather think their stories are distinct enough that they need to be told entirely separately. I say this specifically in reference to Reiko's story, which i think could have been more justice if it just had a bit more room to breathe. The attempt to encompass so many themes - diet culture as religion; the sublime experience of the senses through food; being true oneself despite the potential consequences; sacrificing oneself in order to achieve stability and security in life; the effects of climate change; classism; racism; colonialism - this book tries to get them all in there and doesn’t quite let all those themes really breathe. I rather admire the attempt, but again I wish each of those ideas had been given a bit more room to really expand.
Rating: four plums

Getting Fit: Tips And Tricks For Losing Weight
Weight loss is a difficult subject for a lot of people and it's not easy to do. If you want to lose weight correctly and safely, it's important to do your homework. Some of the weight loss tips featured below will help you to increase your knowledge of the entire weight loss process. If you are going to lay out a diet plan, avoid the weight loss drinks and bars. These types of food have a surprising amount of calories, all while failing to satisfy cravings for actual food.` Rather, you're going to be quite cranky and even hungry after such a "meal." In the end, they end up being a very high calorie and useless addition to your diet. One easy way to start slimming down is to cut red meats out of your diet. Red meat is loaded with fats and unhealthy cholesterol. Try leaner, healthier protein sources such as fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and soy-based meat alternatives. One thing people should do when trying to lose weight is to banish the word "diet" from their vocabulary. "Diet" implies a temporary way of eating, a quick fix that, once your weight-loss goals are reached, can be abandoned. It's much more helpful to think of weight loss as a different "way of eating." If you make more conscious choices about your food and choose to view these foods as part of a new way of eating rather than a temporary fix, you will find yourself adapting to them better and ultimately making them part of your new weight-losing routine. Weight loss is impossible without water. Many times your body can trigger a hunger response to thirst. If you drink a big glass of water before you eat you will know if you are really hungry or if you are just dehydrated. Keep a drink for yourself on hand at all times. Try to cook at home as much as possible. Food from a restaurant often contains a lot of fat and salt. Also, restaurant portions are huge, which might tempt you to eat more than you really need. When you cook your own food, you can control exactly what goes into your meal, and you can control your portions. When you dine out with friends, have a skinny cappuccino instead of dessert. That way you will not feel like you are just sitting there watching while they indulge. Plus, you will know you are saving a whole lot of calories sipping on your sweet, warm, low-calorie beverage instead of choosing that high-fat, calorie-laden piece of cheesecake. If you are overweight because eating is the only thing that gives you pleasure, you need to find other actives that you enjoy. Try finding new hobbies that give you as much pleasure as food does. This will allow you to only eat when you are hungry, instead of eating for something fun to do. A type of good workout that is good for people trying to lose weight is yoga. It can be a very relaxing workout which is great for the mind, though you will also be earning an average of 350 calories for an hours workout. They have many classes you can join, or just find a good workout video and do it alone. When you are at work try to ignore escalators or elevators and take the stairs when you are going up or down just a few flights. This will help you to burn calories and it should not be something that is far more than your body can handle. You probably know the importance of exercise in losing weight. Plan at least three sessions a week, and target a 40 to 60 minute window. Try to maintain a workout schedule; work out early in the morning for a boost of energy, or at the end of your day to unwind. If you follow your diet and exercise plan, you are sure to lose weight. You will want to learn tips that can be used everyday as well as for weight loss. By applying the information you find, you will see that it is very possible to be successful in reaching your weight loss goals. So give it your best shot and use the information learned here to help you get the positive weight loss results you are seeking.

What type of food is best for my dog?
The choice of the best kind food for your dog is dependent on age, breed weight, level activity and any conditions in health. Overall, a balanced diet that suits all the nutritional needs of your dog is essential. Here are some guidelines to consider:
1. Commercial Dog Foods
• High-Quality Commercial Foods: Select reliable commercial dog foods that name meat (chicken, beef or fish) as the first ingredient free from additives, artificial colors and preservatives. These products are made to cover the nutritional levels as specified by AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.
• Type: You may opt for the dry (kibble), wet(canned), semi-moist, and fresh or refrigerated types based on your dog’s preferences and its nutritional requirements.
2. Age-Specific Diets
• Puppies: Puppies do not have the same nutritional needs as adult dogs. They require more protein and calories that will help them develop faster and also improve their energy. Puppy-specific formulas are recommended.
• Adult Dogs: Adult dogs need balanced nutrition that would include proteins, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins in proper quantities.
• Senior Dogs: Diets these dogs must have such that they do not gain much weight but are rich in fiber and contain an appropriate amount of protein.
3. Special Diets for Health Conditions
In other cases, some dogs might be suffering from health complications that necessitate special diets such as low-fat diet for pancreatitis or renal conditions characters with the requirement of a reduction in proteins. Your veterinarian should be consulted before giving your dog a special diet.
4. Raw Diets and Homemade Foods

On the one hand, raw diets are contentious and must therefore be handled with greater caution. Talk to your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist for this assurance of safety and nutritional adequacy.

Intermittent Fasting
Nope. No type of fasting slows down your metabolism beyond the general metabolic adaptations that occur with any type of weight loss. To read all about this, check out this article (all references are on my website):
The Unexaggerated Facts About Intermittent Fasting
We all have that friend who tried intermittent fasting thanks to some Instagram influencer and now won’t shut up about it. On the other hand, we can all think of another friend who religiously worships breakfast and says skipping meals is dangerously unhealthy.
You’re probably reading this somewhere stuck in the middle, not sure what to believe. Does intermittent fasting really work? Or could it be dangerous for your health? What are the scientific pros and cons to it?
All of these questions will be answered and more, my friend. Let’s dive into it.
What Even is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is an eating style that despite the recent hype, has actually been around for centuries. Many cultures and religions practice some form of fasting on a regular or irregular basis. Intermittent fasting is also referred to as time-restricted eating which can be used interchangeably.
To do it, you simply limit the time you’re able to eat during a 24-hour period while fasting the remainder of the time. You can still drink water and low calorie drinks like tea at any point.
There are many variations of intermittent fasting, some of which bend the rules a bit, but in general the most common approach is a 16:8 fast, meaning you don’t eat for 16 consecutive hours a day and eat all your meals within the other 8 hour window.
Most people do this by skipping breakfast and eating their first meal in the afternoon.
Here’s an example:
Noon-8pm: Eating window – means first bite of food can enter your mouth at noon and last bite of food should be swallowed no later than 8pm. 8pm-noon: Fasting window – means you don’t eat within these 16 hours. You can think about food, but you just can’t eat it. Got it? Cool. Pretty simple stuff huh? In fact, if you really think about it, intermittent fasting is really just a glorified way of skipping breakfast.
Thanks to fancy marketing, it simply sounds flashier than it actually is. At it’s core, it’s merely just shortening your eating window and skipping a meal.
Regardless of it’s subtle simplicity, so called fasting experts will claim it as this magical diet with miraculous health benefits. In another extreme, you’ll also have old school dorks who claim skipping breakfast or skipping meals will tank your metabolism worse than the 1929 stock market crash.
Let’s find out where the truth lies.
Intermittent Fasting For Fat Loss
Most the time, intermittent fasting is done to lose fat. Does this actually work?
Yes, it definitely can and in most cases does, but how it causes you to lose fat is quite misunderstood. You see, you don’t lose fat from the fast itself. You lose fat because you end up eating in a caloric deficit meaning you end up eating fewer total calories than you burn over time.
A caloric deficit is always needed for weight loss meaning it’s entirely possible to not lose weight or even gain weight while fasting if you eat too many calories during your eating window. Don’t make this mistake.
However, many people do lose weight on it because the nature of fasting puts you in a deficit with relative ease. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out if you completely cut out a meal and limit the time you’re allowed to eat, you’re likely going to eat fewer total calories than you used to.
But when total calories are matched, research shows fasting is not superior to other forms of caloric restriction (1).
We literally have 3 systematic reviews on this. For those who aren’t as nerdy as me, a systematic review is an epic study of studies. One is usually more than enough to give us a definitive conclusion on a topic.
All 3 combined looked at short term and long term effects in a variety of subjects which all concluded the same thing. Intermittent fasting causes weight loss because it restricts calories. In every single study, when you compare it to other forms of caloric restriction, the results are the same when the deficit is equal (3,4,5).
There’s no mythical fat burning magic with fasting. It just causes you to unknowingly eat less.
Even when you look at other variations of intermittent fasting, you see the same conclusions.
This study showed alternate day fasting did not cause more weight loss or improve adherence when compared with daily caloric restriction (2).
Another 2 studies showed fasting heavily twice a week was not superior to standard caloric restriction (6,7).
So as you can see intermittent fasting is definitely a viable strategy to lose weight, but it’s not this superior diet people make it out to be. Some of my clients do it and others don’t depending on preference. If you can stick to it consistently enough to see results, that’s great, but if you don’t want to do it, that’s cool too. There are plenty of other strategies that are just as good.
Intermittent Fasting For Health
When nutrition gurus promote a diet, it’s advantageous to list as many health benefits as possible even if they aren’t true. This often happens with intermittent fasting.
We just learned fasting is not superior for weight loss, but does it have any superior health benefits as often claimed?
No not really. All proclaimed health benefits of fasting occur because of caloric restriction, not the fast itself.
This is seen consistently in human research and is true for everything ranging from cholesterol levels, increased insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, decreased risk of illness, and autophagy (4,5,7,8,9).
Simply being in a caloric deficit regardless of fasting will produce the exact same health benefits.
The only time, I’ve seen somewhat convincing evidence that intermittent fasting has additional benefits apart from a caloric deficit is in overweight or unhealthy individuals (19,20).
So long story short, fasting doesn’t have any superior health benefit apart from a caloric deficit in healthy people (25).
Intermittent Fasting and Metabolism
Beyond health and fat loss, many fasting gurus claim fasting is the secret sauce to enhancing your metabolism.
They’ll claim it helps you metabolize fat better because you’re not taking in any food. This is partially true, but science paints a fuller picture. Fasters are able to burn more fat during their fast, but also burn less carb. This ratio reverses once they start eating (22).
Furthermore, breakfast eaters will burn less fat during the morning and more carbs. This ratio reverses as well (22).
The end effect is the same exact fat loss as discussed earlier. There is no real advantage when calories are equated for.
And while we’re on this topic of metabolism, if the results of measured fat loss wasn’t enough, research has directly shown fasting does not boost your metabolism (23). If it did, fasting would result in superior fat loss when calories are matched in studies, but this just doesn’t happen.
Is Skipping Breakfast Dangerous for Health?
Science just showed us, fasting isn’t as magical as fasting fanboys claim it to be, but is it as bad as anti-breakfast skippers claim it to be?
Let’s look at the potential drawbacks.
Some people believe intermittent fasting is quite detrimental because skipping breakfast will crash your metabolism. These are the same dorks who still sleep with a nightlight and believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Thankfully, research shows us breakfast is not some holy meal you have to eat. Consistent research shows skipping breakfast doesn’t affect your metabolism and has no impact on health (10,21).
Many people also claim skipping breakfast will cause you to overeat in your later meals. This is also untrue.
A recent systematic review shows the opposite. Skipping breakfast generally causes you to eat fewer total calories for the day than those including breakfast (11,12).
In fact, one study shows if you force non-breakfast eaters to eat breakfast, they end up overeating and gaining fat (13). This is why trainers who still preach the whole breakfast is the most important meal mantra are idiots.
Long story short, fasting doesn’t crash your health and is generally safe.
Does Fasting Impact Performance?
Long term, fasting doesn’t seem to hinder performance in strength or endurance (15,16).
In the short term, performance is hindered if you train fasted in the morning. This study in habitual breakfast eaters showed morning workout performance was better with a high carb meal prior to exercise compared to training fasted (14).
This seems to be the only scenario where intermittent fasting negatively impacts performance. However, as a whole, fasting has not been found to consistently enhance performance in athletic performance (24).
This means in a majority of scenerios, fasting neither decreases nor increases performance.
Does Fasting Cause Muscle Loss?
One of the biggest knocks against intermittent fasting is that it causes muscle loss. Many bodybuilders believe going a few hours too long causes your body to eat away your precious biceps and calves.
However, this is another myth about intermittent fasting. The research shows you don’t lose muscle and retain it just fine while fasting as long as you end up eating the same amount of calories and protein.
In untrained subjects, eating one meal kept the same amount of muscle as eating three without strength training (17).
In trained lifters, doing a standard 16:8 fast paired with strength training resulted in the same muscle retention as those who didn’t fast (15).
Finally, there’s a study in Muslim bodybuilders who would be more prone to muscle loss than anyone because of their low body fat percentage (18). It compared 2 groups training during Ramadan. One group trained fed and the other trained fasted. Both groups didn’t lose any muscle. This study not only shows intermittent fasting doesn’t cause muscle loss, but that strength training specifically while fasted doesn’t cause more muscle loss given all else equal.
Can You Build New Muscle on Intermittent Fasting?
We know it’s certainly possible to build new muscle while on a fasting diet, but from research in other areas, it’s probably not optimal because a short feeding window prevents frequent protein distribution as well as making it hard to eat enough total calories.
That being said, if you’re able to eat an optimal amount of calories and protein during your feeding window, muscle growth while on a fasting diet is comparable to a non-fasting diet (25).
Who Should Do Intermittent Fasting?
Based on the current research and experience with my clients, here’s everything you need to know about intermittent fasting and if you should do it.
Intermittent fasting is a viable weight loss strategy, but it’s not magical or superior to other methods. It simply makes it easier to eat fewer calories by restricting the time frame you’re allowed to munch on food. It’s also not superior for health. All of fasting’s so-called health benefits come from calories being restricted, not the actual fast itself. Skipping breakfast does not crash your metabolism and doesn’t negatively impact your health, so fasting is generally safe. Skipping breakfast also doesn’t cause you to overeat in later meals. That’s a myth. Research shows skipping breakfast generally causes you to eat less than someone including breakfast. Intermittent fasting doesn’t hinder performance unless you’re a habitual breakfast eater who trains fasted in the morning. That being said, fasting also doesn’t enhance performance like some famous athletes claim. Intermittent fasting and training while fasted does not cause muscle loss given all else equal. Prolonged fasting isn’t well researched, so I don’t recommend fasting longer than 24 hours if you’re worried about muscle loss. Trying to build new muscle on intermittent fasting is doable, but likely not ideal if you struggle to eat enough. So while intermittent fasting isn’t this magical diet marketers claim it is, it’s still a deeply viable eating strategy for fat loss with no significant drawback.
You should do it if it aligns with your goals and you’re able to stick to it consistently. If you’re not used to skipping breakfast, it will take some getting used to, but some practical benefits include being able to eat bigger meals and not having to worry about cooking frequently.
Different Types of Intermittent Fasting
If you do decide to try it, here are a few different variations you can try:
16:8 fasting: This is the most common and simplest one. You fast for 16 hours a day and eat within an 8-hour time frame. 5:2 fasting: This is where you eat normally 5 days out of the week and fast for a majority or completely on 2 days out of the week. Your fasting days should be non-consecutive and not be on a workout day. Alternate day fasting: This is where you eat normally one day and fast the following day either completely or partially. Custom fasting: You can customize your own fasting hours or fasting days, so it suits your preferences better. Maybe fasting for 16 hours is too much at first, so you prefer to ease into it with a more reasonable 12 hour fast. Or perhaps you want to fast for 20 hours instead of 16 because you got the discipline of a monk.

IS IT HARD TO LOSE WEIGHT AFTER 40?
Tumblr media
It's normal to gain weight as you age, but harder to lose weight once you hit 40. Albeit you lose weight, it's even harder to maintain it for long. Even people with a best-toned body find it hard to stay similar once they are 40.
There are several factors that may contribute to a slower pace of weight loss like hormonal factors, loss of muscle mass, medical issues, hereditary factors, etc. Though, it may be hard to lose weight, but not impossible.
Muscles of the body burn more calories than body fat. With age, when muscle mass is lost, it slows down your metabolism and makes it difficult to shed that extra kilo.
Leptin, a hormone, is made up of the fat cells of the body. The satiety factor is regulated by leptin. Overweight people develop resistance to this hormone. Some people lose weight easily with simple modifications in their lifestyle, change in diet, and exercise, but some are not that fortunate.
If truth be told, 30-40 percent of people regain their lost weight within one year of losing it. Weight gain during the 40s may be a precursor to issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, PCOD, arthritis, and other health conditions.
As you age, fat tissues start to accumulate around the middle part of your body. Grownups are subject to one-third more fat deposition than young adults. Women, especially during menopause, tend to gain weight because of decreased levels of estrogen.
Still, even with a healthy diet and exercise, hormonal changes impact weight during middle age. According to the American Council on Exercise, due to slow metabolism during midlife, you tend to lose less than 300 calories per day than you did in your 20s.
The golden rules of weight loss
A healthy lifestyle always tops the list of rules for good health and well-being. Other than that, what you need to know is the reason to lose weight. Ask yourself, why do you want to lose weight? The clarity of the reason makes it easier to start the journey.
Golden rule #1: Cut back on portions. Diet control is the first step if you need to make your weighing scale point towards the left. Even if you eat a healthy diet, without portion control it's almost impossible to hit the goal.
Golden rule #2: Stay hydrated. Water aids in keeping the body hydrated as well as maintaining the satiety level. Ill-timed snacking may be to a greater extent limited by regular intake of water.
Golden rule #3: Avoid skipping meals. Skipping meals muddles with metabolism. It may tend to disarray your blood sugar level. Skipping a meal may result in binge eating or snacking on a high-calorie diet.
Golden rule 4#: Aim to lose a fixed weight per week. A slow and steady weight loss is more long-lasting than sudden weight loss achieved through crash and fad dieting. The drop-a-dress size may be tempting, but a gradual weight loss is sustainable and helps you in maintaining a healthy weight for a long.
Following these golden rules will surely help you lose weight gradually, but if nothing is working, then consider trying slimming oil.
Slimming Oil and Weight loss
Slimming oil helps in reducing weight if used regularly in the areas of fat deposition. When it is massaged on the skin, the potent ingredients present in the oil penetrate deep down into the area of fat deposition, boost metabolism, and cellular energy, and enhance cellular regeneration.
Slimming Oil aids in burning fat diminishes stretch marks, tightens the skin, and helps remove toxins accumulated in the body.
Try TSO (Tribal Slimming Oil)! It stimulates fat cells and aids in the process of fat loss. It is an instant fat burner oil that gives results instantly. Tribal slimming oil is a completely organic and safe way to lose the extra fat in your body.
Summary
Being 40 doesn't mean you can't lose weight anymore. Keep in mind that what works best for one may not work for the other. The weight loss strategies keep on changing down the road. If one strategy hits the wall, consider switching to the next until you reach your ultimate goal.
