JIM KIRKPATRICK Dead Man Walking
JIM KIRKPATRICK Dead Man Walking #AlbumReview #RawRampMag
We’ve previously described JIM KIRKPATRICK‘s singing-voice as “demon-filled” and his guitar-play as the “hottest you’ll find this side of the Mason-Dixon line…” and now the celebrated musician has unveiled his eagerly awaited brand new ten-track solo album ‘Dead Man Walking’, which impressively showcases the FM guitarman’s multiple rock & blues talents as well as expanding his variety and range…

The Deacons for Defense and Justice was an armed self-defense African-American civil rights organization in the U.S. Southern states during the 1960s. Historically, the organization practiced self-defense methods in the face of racist oppression that was carried out under the Jim Crow Laws by local/state government officials and racist vigilantes. Many times the Deacons are not written about or cited when speaking of the Civil Rights Movement because their agenda of self-defense - in this case, using violence, if necessary - did not fit the image of strict non-violence that leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. espoused.
On July 10, 1964, a group of African American men in Jonesboro, Louisiana led by Earnest “Chilly Willy” Thomas and Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick founded the group known as The Deacons for Defense and Justice to protect members of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) against Ku Klux Klan violence. Most of the “Deacons” were veterans of World War II and the Korean War. The Jonesboro chapter organized its first affiliate chapter in nearby Bogalusa, Louisiana led by Charles Sims, A.Z. Young and Robert Hicks. Eventually they organized a third chapter in Louisiana. The Deacons tense confrontation with the Klan in Bogalusa was crucial in forcing the federal government to intervene on behalf of the local African American community. The national attention they garnered also persuaded state and national officials to initiate efforts to neutralize the Klan in that area of the Deep South.
The Deacons emerged as one of the first visible self-defense forces in the South and as such represented a new face of the civil rights movement. Traditional civil rights organizations remained silent on them or repudiated their activities. They were effective however in providing protection for local African Americans who sought to register to vote and for white and black civil rights workers in the area. The Deacons, for example, provided security for the 1966 March Against Fear from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi.

Genny was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
She left this life suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Genny was born in Bronson, Florida, Sept. 21, 1928, daughter of Geneva Berryhill Osteen and Leander (Lee) Alexander Osteen of Otter Creek Florida. She was their third child and only daughter. Her mother passed when she was only six years old.
School was one of her loves, along with books. She graduated with high honors and went on to attend Bob Jones University with a degree in Religion and History. In 1950 she graduated. She and a college friend traveled to Gilmer County West Virginia to teach Bible School for the summer, with a missionary for the American Sunday School Union, Glenn U. Kirkpatrick. After the summer she returned to North Carolina to teach a semester.
In December 1950, she returned to West Virginia and married Glenn Kirkpatrick. There was a huge snow storm that December that shocked the young Florida lady. Genny was a partner with him, in the American Sunday School Union, typing reports, putting out newsletters, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and Bible Camp. They had three children, Glenn Joel (Joey), Rebecca B. (Becky) and Robert William Paul (Bobby).
Summers were filled traveling from county to county, in West Virginia, having Bible Schools ending with a Bible Camp in August.
During the rest of the year, it was a different church or one-room schoolhouse each Sunday for Sunday School and preaching.
In all of her free time, she taught herself to drive and took a class at the Gilmer County Career Center to learn to work on cars. She never missed a band concert, choir concert or ball game that her children were in.
Genny worked for the Dept. of Human Services as a Social Worker, and then for the Area Agency on Aging at The Gilmer County Senior Citizens’ Center.
The bookworm in her, took her back to school at Marshall University for a Masters in Special Education and Learning Disabilities.  It was back to teaching, this time in the Gilmer County School system.
Special Olympics became a big part of her life. She loved working with the children and giving them new experiences. For 30 years, she was the Director of Special Olympics in Gilmer County.  When the house needed an addition, she built one on. Nothing could stop this lady.
When grandchildren came, there was plenty of love to go around. As with her children, she was always there for them. Stewarts Creek Church was her home church.
Genny served on the board of the Gilmer County Historical Society. The newsletter for the Gilmer County WV Retired School Employees was one of her projects she loved doing.
She was a member of the Martha’s and Mary’s of Gilmer County and received the Helping Hands Award. Others now saw what we always knew, she was the one behind the scenes lifting all the rest of us up.
Genny was preceded in death by her husband Reverend Glenn U. Kirkpatrick, her sons Joey and Bobby Kirkpatrick, her granddaughters Julia Erin Oppe and Oakley Monroe Kirkpatrick, her mother Geneva and father Lee Osteen, her brothers Lee and Richard Osteen.
Surviving are her daughter Becky and son-in-law Jim Oppe, grandchildren children Tiffany and her husband Mitch Davis their children Luke and Emma, Whitney Oppe and Woody Porter, Carrie and her husband Kevin Summers and son Wyatt, Tommy Kirkpatrick his wife Amber their children Keegan and Ava, Charlie Kirkpatrick, Tara and her husband Billy Eagleston and children Kylie and Landyn, and Chandra Kirkpatrick and her children Jade and Trinity. And Genny’s adopted families the Dorans and Pifers.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, with Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Meadow Lane Cemetery near Glenville. Friends will be received from noon-2 p.m.; Thursday at the mortuary in Glenville.
Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., is honored to assist the family of Geneva “Genny” Osteen Kirkpatrick with arrangements.

May 2024
The final club night of the season of the Isle of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club was held on Thursday 2nd May 2024 in the Royal Hotel, Portree, in front of an almost full house. The music commenced with Calum MacAskill on accordion, accompanied on fiddle by Carina Campbell and Charlie Oag on drums, who played a lively set of tunes - “Redondo Beach, The Wearing of the Green, Billy McMorran's Crook and The Rakes of Mallow”.
Next on stage was the Club's youngest member, Kiro Brendon, who played “My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean and Johnny Cope” on his violin after which he picked up his whistle and played “Morag of Dunvegan and The Barnyards of Delgaty” to resounding applause from the audience.
A group of eight young local musicians, under the guidance of Angus MacKenzie, then took to the floor featuring fiddles, guitar, button box accordion, keyboard, and pipes and played a fantastic selection of tunes – Marches, Reels, Jigs, Strathspeys and Polkas which was greatly appreciated by the large audience which included several visitors from the USA.
It was then the turn of the visiting band to entertain us and it was a warm welcome to three now locally based musicians, Sarah-Jayne Shankland on fiddle, Iseabail Strachan on piano accordion and Hugh MacCallum on drums. It was their first time playing together as a band and they produced a wonderful performance much enjoyed by everyone present. Their first set was for a Gay Gordons to the tunes “Shores of Loch Bee, Greenwoodside and The Heights of Casino” and they continued with Waltzes, Marches, a Boston Two Step and finished the first half of the evening with a set of Jigs as a tribute to the late Fergie MacDonald.
Thirteen musicians assembled to start the second half with a brilliant Stramsh led by Calum on his accordion with players ranging from seven year old Kiro to the evergreen Charlie Kirkpatrick who was visiting the club. The group played two lively sets of great music resulting in much applause from the audience.
After the raffle was drawn club regular Wendy Riva played three sets on her violin in her usual professional manner and was followed by another visitor to the club, Bob Adam from Dunfermline on piano accordion accompanied by Sarah-Jayne and Charlie Oag playing two sets of foot tapping Marches. Charlie stayed on drums then to accompany our other visitor, Charlie Kirkpatrick, very popular and no stranger to Skye, who featured a grand set of Marches followed by a Gaelic waltz selection which had many of the audience singing along.
It was back then to our guest artistes, Sarah-Jayne, Iseabail and Hugh, who set the tempo with a set of Reels followed by the popular tunes “Major Manson of Clachantrushal and Mrs HL MacDonald of Dunach” for a Canadian Barn Dance. Beautiful tunes - “Farquhar and Hettie's Waltz and The Wild Rose of the Mountain” - made up their next Waltz set and the band also featured Strathspeys, 2/4 Pipe Marches and Jigs before rounding off the evening with a set of Jigs made up of “Dr Flora MacAulay of Carradale, The Hen's March, Paddy 's Leather Breeches and Kenny Gillies of Portnalong” much to the delight of the audiece who demanded an encore to which the band responded with a foot stomping set of Reels. A brilliant night of music from three extremely talented young musicians who had stood in at short notice as a replacement band.
The evening finished with a word of thanks for the committee members who keep the club functioning, at times under difficult conditions, and a reminder of the annual general meeting which will be held in the Royal Hotel on Monday, 15th July 2024.

Dead man walking announced by JIM KIRKPATRICK
JIM KIRKPATRICK Announces #NewAlbum #deadmanwalking #UKBlues #Americana #BluesRock
JIM KIRKPATRICK is perhaps best known for his work with the celebrated British AOR band FM. The guitarman released his wizardly blues solo album, “Ballad of a Prodigal Son” — a twelve-track “blues-rock outing” — in September 2021, via US One Records. We’ve previously described Jim’s singing-voice as “demon-filled” and his guitar-play as the “hottest [you’ll find] this side of the Mason-Dixon…

FM - Old Habits Die Hard
Tumblr media
"Old Habits Die Hard" ist das vierzehnte Studioalbum der legendären britischen AOR-Rockband FM. Das Album wird von Frontiers Records am Freitag, den 3. Mai 2024 veröffentlicht. Sieh Dir unten das offizielle Video zur ersten Single "Out of the Blue" an. Interview: Bass Drum of Death - Say I Won't
Tumblr media
Bass Drum of Death in Sion with opening band Fomies, (one of the best Swiss rock bands in my opinion), through my Nikon right after the show.
Back in October, one of my favorite bands, Bass Drum of Death, was touring in Europe and had a few shows in Switzerland. I had not seen the band live since their show in Bulle back in 2019, so I was really looking forward to it – I could make it to the shows in Sion and at Croc’ The Rock – and they were so much fun, with an incredible setlist. I couldn’t help but sing along and party in the pit while taking photos!
Bass Drum of Death was also one of the first bands I ever interviewed, back in 2014. So almost ten years later, I gathered all my courage and asked the band for a new interview before their show in Sion, and they kindly agreed. Join us as we talk about Bass Drum of Death over the years, life outside of touring, the album Say I Won’t and more.
Many thanks to John, Jim and Ian, and the team at Le Port Franc for making this possible!
I know that you guys were living in New York before Covid, and then you moved back to Mississipi. Are you still living there? What’s a regular day like in your lives when you’re not on tour?
John Barrett: I live in Nashville now, Jim lives in New York and Ian lives in Oxford, Mississipi. So we’re split up, but we all meet back up when it’s time to do a tour or something like that. As far as a regular day for me, it’s waking up pretty early, taking my dog on walks, writing emails and trying to get stuff done in my studio room. Maybe a little golf here and there depending on the day.
Jim Barrett: Very domestic these days! Mine is less so. I stay out late.
John: You’re still a big partier.
Ian Kirkpatrick: Oxford is a bit of a smaller town, so there’s not a whole lot to do. So I hang around, skateboard, play golf and that’s about it. It’s a pretty easy life down in Mississipi.
Awesome! I think it’s nice to live a peaceful life. Especially as a musician, touring can get pretty intense.
Jim: Yeah, on tour I want peace and quiet, and sleep. The opposite of running around! I love being on tour, but I’m counting the days to being in my own bed. Or sitting in a park for a bit and not moving around you know?
John: I love being on tour, but having to be somewhere and physically moving every single day can wear on you a little bit.
Jim: It’s exhausting.
Tumblr media
Jim and John Barrett in Sion, through my Nikon.
The project Bass Drum of Death has been going for a while, about 15 years now. I was wondering if you still had the same vision in mind?
John: Yeah, it pretty much stayed the same. The only difference now is that I’ll record demos, bring them to these guys and they will help flesh them out. It’s essentially the same as I’ve always done it, it’s just that I don’t completely finish the songs myself. So it’s a lot better for me, because I can get an idea down, or a rough sketch of what I want. Basically, I don’t have to do every single thing. It makes it a lot easier, and a lot better getting input from different people.
Jim: And it’s fun for us too, because you’ll come in with a demo that you’ve either fully or half finished. You’ll be pumped on it, give it to us and we’ll work on it together. Which is way more how normal bands operate, whereas it used to be 100 % written and recorded and we would just learn the stuff. John is still the band leader, or primary songwriter, but we are able to put our spice on it too.
Tumblr media
Ian Kirkpatrick in Sion, through my Nikon.
I think it’s also a great way to keep it entertaining. As a big fan of garage rock, I am happy that Bass Drum of Death has kept going for so long, but I don’t know what it’s like for the musicians.
John: It’s definitely one of the difficult things, just trying not to do the same thing or the same style over and over. You know, I think I kinda got in a good groove making songs that are maybe in a little bit different styles, but still sound like us when we get them all finished. So it is fun, but it is a struggle after so long. Because sometimes you end up writing stuff that you think you ‘should’ sound like and it makes it hard to take some chances.
Jim: I think – especially on the album we put out in January this year (ndlr: Say I Won’t), we had a bunch of talks about this – if we’re not changing some stuff up or adjusting, then we’re dying. If you’re not changing the way you create, then you are just recycling. And that’s not the point. So I think we came to a middle ground of changing the process, especially for John, but still adhering to the same rock and roll aesthetic that he has curated for the last decade or so. Sticking to that as a formula, but changing up the way that we go about it has kept it interesting.
I was thinking that perhaps you would wake up one day and think ‘fuck this, I’m making classical music now’ (laughs)
John: Nothing that drastic, but a jazz record perhaps? (laughs) But that’s the thing, I’m not a good enough musician to do something in these other genres. I should probably just stick to this.
youtube
I know you’ve done a lot of interviews about the recording and the music of your latest album Say I Won’t alreay. So I just have a question about the lyrics of the song Find It. Are they about something in particular?
John: I guess it was specifically more about being in New York, a place where you can find anything you want. And basically, the downsides of that as well.
Jim: That was the main one we wrote during Covid. When we demoe’d it, I feel like it was one of the first songs where we thought ‘Oh, we’re writing a record now’.
What can we expect from Bass Drum of Death in the future?
John: We’ve got a bunch of stuff coming up. We’ve got a live record that we recorded that will be out soon. And hopefully a new record, we’ll be able to do that sometime next year. We’re trying to hit it hard after having such a long break during Covid. We’ll get it going again.
