Anna Cora Mowatt, Mimic Life, and the Critics
Part III: Publication Although January of 1856 is usually listed as the publication date of Mimic Life, newspaper ads and reviews indicate that there was an initial release of the book starting in the Northeast around December 25, 1855.  This run quickly sold out, leading to the publication of blind items similar to this one that appeared in the Charlotte Democrat in the early weeks of January,…

Round 20
THE SEA EAGLE
MAKING RUGBY LEAGUE GREAT AGAIN!!!
Tumblr media
Round 20
Manly Sea Eagles      30
Defeated
Newcastle Knights   6
This time last year Manly were being coached by a non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon and were struggling to avoid the spoon. In the corresponding game against the Knights who were also coached by a non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon they duly were defeated in what was then known as the Slapfest Cup, in commemoration of the infamous slapping incident between respective non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon player/coaches.
Tumblr media
How things have changed in the space of 12 months. Now under Coach Hasler, Manly won’t be slapped around by anyone, particularly a team coached by a non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon. Thankfully for Manly (and their supporters) there is now only one team who’s ranks have a coach with such credentials, that being the Knights and as expected Manly put them to the sword.
Played in ideal conditions at the recently resurrected Fortress Brookvale, Manly opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Curtis Sironen crossed after a deft offload from Cherry Baby. Sironen has become somewhat of a try scoring machine in season 2019, and his work on the edge of the ruck, running off the likes of Cherry Baby and Jake Trbjovec has been a revelation.
Tumblr media
Manly doubled their advantage when Rueben Garrick scored what can only be described as a miraculous try with an acrobatic leap into the corner collecting a well placed Cherry Baby kick. Fast, nimble, athletic wingers have been a scarcity at Manly in recent years the performance of young Garrick, who has now scored 13 tries in season 2019 has added a new dimension to this current Manly outfit.
Manly did not have it all their own way in the first half, and after a spate of penalties the Knights hit back through young gun Kaylen Ponga, reducing Manly’s advantage to 8-6 at the break.
With their season on the line and the tightness of the score-line the Sea Eagle was concerned that the Knights would come out all guns blazing in the second half. Alas, these concerns were not to come to fruition as the Knights, under their non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon coach reverted to type and meekly surrendered to the vastly superior Manly outfit.
Tumblr media
Manly opened their second half tally, when journeyman, come try scoring machine Joel Thompson crossed after some fine leadup work from Dylan “NOT GUITY” Walker. Like his cohort, Curtis Sironen, Thompson has also wreaked havoc running off the edge of the ruck this year.
The Sea Eagle can report that there are unconfirmed reports that Thompson may be leaving Manly at seasons end to link up with none other than the hapless Knights. If this is in fact the case the Sea Eagle can only conclude that poor old Joel, has forgotten the disaster that was the past two seasons at Manly (prior to Hasler’s return in 2019), loves playing under non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex-Dragon coaches and is not concerned with premiership success. Memo to Mr Thompson – beware they never go better when they leave the nest!
Tumblr media
Further tries to Horhay Torfua and Rueben Garrick and the score-line was beginning to resemble a rout and effectively putting an end to any hope that the Knights had of playing finals football this year. The late season capitulation of the Knights is hardly surprising and is not dissimilar to a number of other clubs (think Dragons, Warriors etc.) that seem to collapse when the whips are cracking in the lead up towards finals.
Thankfully the same cannot be said about the Des Hasler coached Manly outfit, who not only are now assured of some action in September but are knocking on the door of a top 4 finish – do we dare to dream??
They Never Go Better
The report that Joel Thompson may be leaving Manly at season end has prompted the Sea Eagle to recap some high-profile victims of the syndrome “They never go better when they leave the nest”. The list of players succumbing to this phenomenon is long and far from distinguished and history tells us it’s a hard one to overcome.
Bob Fulton – Bozo, a Manly legend, premiership winner as a player (at Manly) thought the grass was greener at Bondi, however after an ill-feted stint with the Latte sippers returned to Manly where he won a premiership as a coach and ultimately became a rugby league immortal.
Tumblr media
Paul Vautin – premiership winning captain at Manly. Unlike Fulton, Vautin was shown the door at Manly, probably at the time deemed to be too old and too slow and thought he could prolong his career at the Roosters. Poor old Fat ended up warming the bench for reserve grade, before returning to Manly as a Chairman and Life member.
Tumblr media
Ron Gibbs – after leading the pack to premiership glory in 1987, Rambo Ronnie sought greener pastures at the Gold Coast – no further comment necessary.
Kieran Foran – a recent poster boy for the syndrome, when after tasting premiership glory at Manly took the big money on offer from the Eels. After a disastrous stint at the Eels, where it was alleged that he was living in his car, Foran’s career has been marred by injury and poor form at both the Warriors and Dogs.
Tumblr media
Anthony Watmough – like Foran, another poster boy, multiple premiership winner at Manly, Choc spat the dummy and went to the Eels and after playing only a handful of games was forced to retire.
Tumblr media
Glenn Stewart – premiership winner and Clive Churchill medal winner at Manly. A bit like Fatty, was shown the door for being too old and injury prone and ended up at the Bunnies where he had very little game time due to being too old and injury prone.
Will Hoppa – premiership winner in his rookie season at Manly, when he played state of origin, to a moderate performer at both the Eels and Dogs.
John Hoppa – premiership winner at Manly but now only remember for sticking his finger where the sun doesn’t shine at the Tigers.
Tumblr media
Anthony Seibold & Brad Arthur – both assistant coaches at Manly, but now leading their respective clubs towards sustained mediocrity.
Dean Whare & Peta Hiku – both were promising backs at Manly but have morphed into relative obscurity and irrelevance at the Panthers.
Any current Manly player would be well advised to consider the above when making decisions on their playing futures. Whilst there were no doubt other motives at play (i.e. contract negotiations and coin) Cherry Baby for one was able to recognise the phenomenon reneging on his deal at the Titans and has been rewarded greatly for his sage and sensible decision.
In some instances, it won’t be up to the player as Manly generally has a history of recognising a players use-by date and moving them on regardless, a concept somewhat ignored by the also-rans.

The GOP Tax Plan Would Make It Harder for Workers to Get New Skills

The GOP Tax Plan Would Make It Harder for Workers to Get New Skills
How can workers adapt to a constantly changing labor market and the oncoming threat of automation? One of the suggestions researchers and policymakers have is to go back to school and acquire new skills. As my colleague Derek Thompson wrote recently, “Making it easier for adults to attend college part-time is crucial if, as the White House has claimed, the U.S. economy [actually] suffers from a ‘skills gap.’” But the latest Republican tax plan, which passed in the House, would make it more difficult for many of these workers to tap into precisely the types of education and training they have been told they need.
The House Republican plan, which was unveiled earlier this month, would repeal the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC), a 20 percent tax credit on tuition expenses at any eligible postsecondary program up to $10,000 for those who make $65,000 or less (or $130,000 or less for married couples filing jointly). Over 4 million tax filers claim the LLC annually, saving them about $2.6 billion a year.
Gutting the LLC wouldn’t completely eradicate tax credits for students. The LLC has a counterpart, the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), which the tax plan would not scrap. About 10 million people utilize the ATOC, saving them $17.5 billion per year. Only students going to school at least half-time, in their first four years of postsecondary education, whose income is less than $90,000 (or $180,000 for joint filers) are eligible for the credit. While the AOTC’s higher income cap captures more of the population, the credit’s limits on years of postsecondary study mean that it won’t be accessible to many who need longer-term retraining programs. To mitigate some of the damage done by repealing the LLC, the Republican tax bill offers to extend eligibility to a fifth year to serve some of those who would have been served under the LLC, but would offer them only half as much as what they’d get for the first four years.
Some experts say that eradicating the LLC particularly harms workers who have been told that the key to success in the labor market is learning new skills. The LLC, according to Kim Rueben of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, is the only real option for workers who have or need more than five years of schooling, or who are enrolled in school less than half-time. And that’s many of the workers whose jobs are at risk.
The House tax plan also would repeal the tax exclusion for employer-provided education assistance, which allows employers to offer up to $5,250 to an employee for educational needs, tax-free. In a letter to the Hartford Courant regarding the potential repeal, the president of Sacred Heart University, John Petillo, and the president of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system, Mark Ojakan, wrote that the “tax-excluded benefit is an important tool in any workforce strategy.”
Cutting that tax exclusion and the LLC could make it more expensive for workers to gain new skills or higher degrees. “Workers going back to school part-time or in non-degree programs wouldn’t be eligible for a tax credit and others would have to pay tax on the value of schooling paid for by their employers,” wrote Rueben and her Tax Policy Center colleague Gordon Mermin.
When asked about how the planned education-credit cuts will affect workers, a House Ways and Means Committee spokesperson touted estimates from the right-leaning Tax Foundation, which indicate that nearly 1 million new jobs will be created because of the bill, due to the proposed lowering of the corporate income tax.
If the tax bill passes in its current form, nontraditional workers who were hoping to retrain may face yet another blow. “It all feels like it is all part and parcel of decreasing federal support for individual workers and for having employers invest in workers or human capital,” says Rueben. The U.S. has funded employment and training programs since the 1930s, but that funding has consistently dwindled. Resources for employment and training programs peaked in the 1970s, according to the economists Burt Barnow and Jeffrey Smith, when funding was equivalent to about 0.64 percent of the U.S.’s GDP. In 2015, funding for these programs was equivalent to only 0.03 percent of GDP. The funding pales in comparison to what other nations spend on these programs: In 2015, Germany’s expenditures on training programs were equivalent to 0.22 percent of its GDP, and in France, expenditures were closer to around 0.34 percent of GDP.
The tax plan has yet to pass the Senate, which will start debating after Thanksgiving and vote sometime before the Christmas holiday. Because Republicans have a 52–48 majority in the Senate, if more than two Republican Senators vote no, the bill would be stifled. There’s reason for Republicans to be concerned though: Two Republican senators, Ron Johnson and Susan Collins, have already expressed hesitation about the contents of the bill.
