Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a popular weekend destination for anyone who is sick and tired of the Nairobi congestion and craziness.  It’s near a couple other destinations such as Mt. Longonot and Hell’s Gate National Park, so it’s ideal for a relaxing and eventful weekend trip.  Some friends and I went here after a day safari at Hell’s Gate National Park, and did a boat cruise around 5 PM.  The light was absolutely perfect, and we could see birds, waterbuck, hippos, and even found a family of giraffes.  

Naivasha was formed out of volcanic activity, and has over 300 bird species; it’s an important stop for many migrations.  According to our guide, several years of heavy rainfall have expanded the lake, which explains many of the sunken trees around the shoreline.  There were tons of egrets, cranes, Egyptian white ibis, grey herons, white pelicans, cormorants, seagulls, marabou storks, weaver birds, and African fish eagles casually hanging around the lake.  Naivasha is also a big hippo habitat, and the boat guides and fisherman have an understanding of where the hippos have their territories, and when they like to move around the lake.  This is very important because hippos are extremely territorial and quite dangerous to humans if one mistakenly violates that territory.  Our guide brought us to a couple places where hippos were chilling underwater very close to the shore, which made me a bit nervous because our tiny little boat could very easily be turned into a hippo toothpick... 

Naivasha is also famous for pink flamingos, but during that trip, we were unable to spot any.  Our guide explained that you only have a 50/50 change of seeing flamingos at Naivasha -- they feed on algae at the lake bottom, so if the water is too deep for them to feed, then they skip Lake Naivasha and head onto Lake Nakuru, which is to the north.  The boat guide also found us a family of giraffes feeding at the lakeside, with adults and babies!  They were grazing on Crescent Island, which is a protected peninsula along the lakeside.  

We were also able to see a brilliant sunset as we came back from our cruise...would definitely recommend Lake Naivasha and also recommend a boat cruise.  There were many affordable places along the lake to stay overnight, and we had an excellent late lunch at the lakeside.

Stay a night at Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Situated a short distance from the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa, this small private sanctuary bordering the vast Tsavo National Park doubles as a luxury hotel and well-positioned hide, overlooking a salt lick and a waterhole that frequently attracts aggregations of a hundred or more elephants. Step into the land of giants at Amboseli National Park The 392sq km (151sq mile) Amboseli National Park lies at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Wildlife includes lion, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo and gazelle, but the park is most famous for the large herds of elephant attracted by the perennial swamps. Bird-watching is popular, and visitors can learn about the local Maasai people through homestead visits. Take the road less travelled to Lake Turkana In the barren northern reaches of Kenya, Lake Turkana is a strange and beautiful oasis, known to locals as the Jade Sea due to its size and striking colour. The lake provides great fishing, while its islands have healthy crocodile and hippo populations. The semi-nomadic Turkana tribe are just as interesting as the lake itself. Being born and raised in rural Kenya, I was used to seeing tourist vans along the nearby road quite often. Back then I didn’t know where they were headed to or where they came from. Later on in life, I found out that Kenya is one of the best travel destinations in Africa and that the passengers were called tourists going on a safari to different parts of the country.

By the time I was 19 years I had already developed the interest of traveling to these destinations and know what was there to be seen. Because I couldn’t afford the tour vans, I used local transport, spent the night with rural families and ate at local restaurants “Kibanda”. I came to learn that this was called backpacking and I have been backpacking Kenya and Africa on a budget since then.

Kenya is one of the best backpacker havens in Africa. It boasts a number of backpacker’s friendly places to visit, accommodation and restaurants.

When people think of Kenya or rather East Africa, the first few things that cross their minds are safari in the Maasai Mara or relaxing at the beach in Diani.

While these are some of the best experiences, there are a lot of other amazing places to visit and things to in the country on a budget. The deep culture, history, wildlife, nature, beaches and food will give you an experience of a lifetime.

Backpacking Kenya Destinations

Kenya is a member country of the East Africa community and is known as the heartbeat of the region. The blooming tech ecosystem, tourism, athletics and entrepreneurship has put the country in the global limelight.

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and the largest city and it’s mostly the first point of entry for all international arrivals. Other destinations of interest include Naivasha, Mombasa, Samburu and Kisumu.

Getting Around

It is easy to since most of the people can understand and speak English. In rural areas it is however recommended to have a local guide who understands the local language and the surrounding.

Public transport in Kenya is cheap and it is by far the best way to move around on a budget. In big cities like Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu ride share taxi’s (Uber, Taxify, and Mondo) are available and very reliable.

Train travel in Kenya is taking shape at high. It is now easy to travel between Nairobi and Mombasa within a few hours on a budget on board the Madaraka Express Train. Along the way you get to see elephants and Giraffes at the Tsavo National Park and local settlements.

Matatus (Minibuses) and Boda Bodas (Motorcycle taxis) are very common in all parts of the country and are the best way to interact with locals.

Where to stay while backpacking Kenya

Getting a good backpackers place to stay in Kenya is not easy. This is because, most of the places are very expensive or the environment is not backpacker friendly. Being a local, I have been able to find some of the less known accommodation options in the country. This is based on price, ease of meeting other people, accessibility to the cities and comfort.

Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu

Distant Relative eco lodge (Kilifi Backpackers) – This is my recommended choice when in Kilifi. The hostel is inexpensive and you get to meet other backpackers during your stay.

Tulia House (Mombasa Backpackers) – This hostel is located in Nyali beach, Mombasa. It is not far away from the main amenities like malls and restaurants.

Stilt/Diani Backpackers in Diana – Stilt has an easy access to Diani which has some of the best beaches along the Kenyan Coast.

Other good accommodation options along the Kenyan coast include Lamu Backpackers (Lamu), Merry Crab Cove (Watamu) and Backpacker’s Nirvana (Mombasa).

Nairobi and its environs

Khweza Bed & Breakfast (Downtown Nairobi) – This is the best option for anyone who wants to stay close to the city center.

Mara Explorers Camp in Maasai Mara – Accommodation inside Maasai Mara is expensive, this camp offers the best value for money to anyone on a budget.

Milimani Backpackers – In my opinion, this is the best hostel in Nairobi. The place has very nice and friendly staff, you meet other travelers and it located in a very serene environment.

Backpacking Activities in Kenya

There are many places to visit and things to do in Kenya. Even after exploring most of the destinations, I still feel that there is a lot I don’t know about my own county.Many travelers restrict themselves to Nairobi and Mombasa but when there a lot other less known places equally magical.

Game drive at the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park or Nairobi National Park

Watch the great wildebeest migration at the Maasai Mara

Climb Mt. Kenya which is the second highest mountain in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Hike the Elephant Hills located in the Aberdares National park

Experience Lake Turkana and hike in the central island

Day 08:- MANYARA-LUSHOTO After a late breakfast depart the hotel start the drive to lushoto arrive Lushoto in the late afternoon after checking in you may get ready for the evening Hiking or spend the rest of the day in hotel resting. Loldia House: May 2019

Loldia had a little rain in the month of May, just 37mm overall rainfall was recorded – which we were very grateful for! The scattered showers just managed to freshen things up and the surrounds are just green enough.

We are are feeding the hippo hay and a molasses mixture in the evenings, which is gives the guests such pleasure. Sometimes there are up to five at the bottom of the garden just before dark. They remain at a safe distance, behind the low lying ‘hippo fence’ which stops them from coming right up to the house. During the night, buffalo, zebra, Water Buck and sometimes the Bush Pigs are coming in to enjoy the hay. On the night of the 29th, we had two giraffe right in front of main house, they too had come to enjoy the complimentary food that we have been leaving out at night. There are two pairs of Fish Eagles nesting in the garden, which makes for a very good alarm call in the morning!

On May 1st, we found the sweetest little baby fawn Impala, that had sadly got separated from its mother during some hyena mayhem in the night, and had run all the way up to the verandah of room #2. We found it there quite frightened and shaken in the morning, thankfully its mother passed by to collect it before we had to make a plan! The Impala like to sleep on the lawn at night, within the hippo fence perimeter, which gives them safety against predators. On this particular occasion, the hyena spooked the Impala causing quite a ruckus and general separation of of the herd.

With the little bit of rain the Leonotis have come into flower – commonly known as the ‘Sunbird flower’. There are many varieties of Sunbirds and the most spectacular, in my opinion, is the Golden Winged sunbird which is often seen flitting in and around flora surrounding our beautiful infinity pool.

The night game drives are still proving to be very popular – we have now got red filters on the spot lights which drastically limits the amount of invasive light on the animal, meaning they are more likely to continue on with their nocturnal activity and ignore our vehicle almost completely. Guests can expect to see Owls, Bush Babies, Mongoose, Bat-Eared Foxes, Spring Hares, together with the usual Antelope, Buffalo, Hippo and Hyena. One evening an Aardvark was seen! Sadly no leopard sightings in May.

Our guests are always more than thrilled with their trip to Nakuru National Park, where there are always good sightings of rhino, Rothschild giraffe, ostrich, lion, sometimes a leopard and many Dung Beetles at work. It is becoming more popular to leave Loldia House early in the morning with a picnic breakfast and lunch – if you leave it much later than this, the day heats up and by lunch time, many of the animals have taken refuge in the bush. So, we do encourage guests to leave in good time and be back to enjoy the afternoon soaking up the sun and views around the pool.

May has been an interesting month in terms of visitors, it its usually quite a quiet month, but there have been a number of repeat guests who have deliberately come come for the real peace and quiet that Loldia House has to offer. There is no better place to relax and unwind after an exhilarating few days in the Masai Mara for instance. We have also welcomed a lot of travel agents, who come to inspect Loldia as a possible property for their clients. It is always a pleasure to host them.

Some of the visiting agents took a short walk through Eburru Forest, home to the incredibly rare Mountain Bongo, as well as Colobus and Blue monkeys. There walk was followed by a demonstration from the honey collectors (you will see many bee hives through the forest). They also played football with the school children and a member of the Eburru Rafiki Trust gave a talk to the agents in the evening. This is a voluntary organisation whose aim is to re-plant trees, stop the poaching, set up camera traps to hopefully see Bongo, stop the illegal grazing of cattle in the forest, open up paths for walking and encourage the local population to produce honey.

Two of the same agents spent a morning at Soysambu Conservancy following a pride of lion that had been collared. Lion tracking at Soysambu is a particularly fascinating activity to do from Loldia – its very easy to get to and a chance to learn about conservation. The other two members of this team climbed Mt. Longonot, an inactive volcano that overlooks the beautiful landscape of Lake Naivasha area in Kenya.

There have been a few boat trips on Lake Naivasha where guests can enjoy ‘close up’ sightings of hippo and a myriad of bird species. We are very excited to be welcoming a new boat and engine in June!

We were delighted to host mother and daughter, Jill and Rachel, at Loldia House this May. Eager to be involved in some of the responsible tourism projects we support, they reached out to us in advance and sent through donations in order to purchase some much needed supplies for the Loldia Primary School. Once they were with us, we took them over to the school to meet the children and the teachers and to hand out the donations to some very excited recipients. The children were absolutely delighted and they showed their appreciation by singing and dancing for them. Jill and Rachel then traveled on to Governors’ Camp in the Mara, where Jill personally planted 24 indigenous sapling trees! We are very thankful to them both for taking a genuine interest in the environment and communities surrounding our camps and lodges, and for supporting us in our efforts to promote sustainable travel.
