EDITOR: In Matthew 5:24 Jesus said  “love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute.”  Wow! Really Lord: Love our enemies? Then we remember that Jesus died for every one of us, and not just little sins or big sins, but all sins.  Jesus went to the cross loving the people who were torturing and crucifying him. Can we do likewise? LRM

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell.  Love Changes Us and the World:  We celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day March 17th each year, the recognized day of his death in the fifth century AD.  He was born in Britain 386 AD.  But at 16 years of age he was captured by Irish pirates and sold into slavery. Eventually he escaped, but returned to Ireland, as a missionary to teach his enemies of the love of Jesus Christ.
ASHTON RECALLS   by Ashton Hester                                                 Here's a brief item for the Post. Some readers may be interested to know that holding debates was a highly popular activity among schools, literary societies, civic organizations, etc. in the pre-radio and TV era in the early 1900s. Salem was no exception, as the following item attests                                                        DEBATE TO BE HELD AT SALEM PTA MEETING - (The following item was in the February 13, 1924 Keowee Courier). . .On Friday night, Feb. 15, at 7 o'clock, the Salem Parent-Teachers' Association will render a program that will include the following debate: "Resolved, that Geo. Washington was a greater man than Woodrow Wilson." Affirmative, Beulah Nicholson, Jesse Sloan; negative, Annie Nicholson, Loyd Meroney. . .Rev. C.R. Abercrombie, president of the Parent-Teachers' Association, says that everyone is invited to attend the program. ..(Footnote written in 2024: Of course, Woodrow Wilson was the current President of the United States at that time.

If you are concerned with  the progression of overdevelopment in our county it is time to get informed and organized.  One neighborhood concern shared with The Old Salem Post: “ I’m sure you’re aware of the proposed development of 769 acres on Highway 130 for 2000 dwelling units. This will have a very negative effect on our community. Several of us are trying to organize a vocal opposition to this development.”  A start would be to attend the Oconee County Planning Commission meeting on Monday, March 18th at 6pm at 415 S Pine St, Walhalla, SC 29691 in the Oconee County Administrative Office.  Then plan to attend Oconee County Council meeting Tuesday, March 19th at 6pm.  Sign up before 6pm if you plan to speak during public comment.

From a Reader:  I enjoyed your lesson about the meaning of "quick." Here's another context of the phrase, "the quick and the dead." When I was drafted into the Army in 1966, during basic training we had a session on fighting with a bayonet affixed to the tip of a rifle. The drill sergeant informed us that, in a bayonet fight, there were only two types of participants: the quick and the dead. Fortunately, I never had to get in a bayonet fight, because I wasn't very quick. AH

#Sumter sc jummp registration#
The November midterm election is Tuesday, Nov. The commission told her nothing prevents him from running for more than one office. Ethics Commission and other state officials about what will happen if Evans wins both seats.
#Sumter sc jummp registration#
According to Pat Jefferson, director of Sumter County Voter Registration and Elections, she is waiting to hear from the S.C. Evans is also running for Sumter City Council in November in the Ward 1 race. Disney is a former board member who was appointed to one of the at-large seats by the Sumter County Legislative Delegation in 2017. The District 9 race without any incumbents will be between Bonnie Disney and Reginald "Reggie" Evans. Those are Johnny Hilton (District 3) against Canty and Lee (District 7) versus Shery Smith. Only two incumbents face only one challenger. Daryl McGhaney (District 4) and Sherril Ray (District 8) - face three challengers each. Trustees Brian Alston (District 1) and Frank Baker (District 2) are in races with a field of five candidates. As a result of redrawing districts, she and fellow trustee Gloria Lee now live in District 7, and no incumbents live in District 9. The lone trustee not seeking re-election is board Chairwoman Barbara Jackson, who has been on the board since 2012. Singleton - who will go up against incumbent Shawn Ragin in District 5.Īll nine districts have been redrawn after 2020 Census redistricting and a law change from a few years ago that expanded the board from seven single-member districts and two at-large seats to nine single-member districts for the upcoming election. That is a jump from 18 who had filed through Wednesday, and all eight incumbents who are running will face challengers in November on the often-controversial Sumter School District Board of Trustees.Ĭandidates filing on the final day included two former board members in Ralph Canty (District 3) and Monica Squires (District 4), as well as Ron Underwood (District 1) and a pair of challengers - Patrice Campbell-Gaines and Mary F. BY BRUCE five more people filing Monday, Sumter school board races reached 30 total candidates between all nine seats that are up for election.

Top 5 21st-century Industries with the Fastest Growth
China and India are two of the top five e-commerce markets in terms of growth. Even if these markets have long been the norm, the newest ones are on the verge of storming the world. Even though these developing markets are tiny, they provide e-commerce business owners the ideal chance to enter a fast growing market. Let's examine the top 5 e-commerce markets in more detail.
By 2017, the e-learning market is anticipated to expand by 20% annually. Personalizing lessons in real time, learning as a game, and better student tracking are all emerging themes. In addition, more millennial children will require specific goods and services to thrive due to the high birth rate in the U.S. Gender-neutral toys, chemical-free diapers, and gluten-free baby food are a few of the top startup concepts in this industry.
Education technology is the second-fastest-growing startup sector in the U.K. This industry integrates technological instruments into the household and the classroom. Students could always have access to top-notch academic resources thanks to these tools. The Coronavirus virus catalyzed the expansion of the tech sector. Currently, the U.K. has 552 active high-growth tech startups. The current development of the tech industry predicts they will reach $4 billion over the next five years.
The South Carolina city of Charleston, SC, has the second-fastest growth rate. The Charleston market is comprised of the counties of Charleston, Dorchester, and Colleton. Maricopa county, meantime, is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Additionally, Lee, Florida is located in southwest Florida and has just one county, Lee. Similar to Orlando, FL, which is located in central Florida and encompasses the counties of Orange and Sumter, Lake, and Northwest Pinal.
The artificial intelligence sector is expanding quickly. Pioneers in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong have already created the technology to identify illness and foretell a person's demise. For instance, the most recent innovation in this field is Amazon's Alexa. By 2025, the artificial intelligence market is anticipated to grow to $9 billion. These positions may be ideal for you if you seek well-paying employment in this industry.
Green electricity is desirable for many nations as it becomes more accessible and affordable. Samsung, a leading global technology company, has pledged to use only renewable energy in the U.S., Europe, and China by 2020. Following pressure from member states, the E.U. has increased its target to reach 32 percent green power by 2030. Global sales of renewable energy already total $1.35 billion. So, how do you profit from this market? First, affirm investing in this sector.
India will soon rank as the ninth-largest aviation market in the world. It will have more than three times as many mobile apps installed as any other region by 2020, accounting for nearly 50% of all installs worldwide. Furthermore, the market will bring in $72.2 billion in income from games, or 47% of all games worldwide. India could be a good market for you if you want to grow your company internationally. Therefore, enter these fascinating growing markets and leave your mark there.
Another rising market is Namibia. Namibia's solar energy sector expanded 74% last year due to the increasing demand for locally generated electricity. The nation already has 120 MW worth of large-scale solar projects in the works. There is no denying that the continent has a promising future for renewable energy. The top solar energy markets with the highest growth are all in Africa. However, it is Africa's richness that sets it apart. The geography of Africa is the most varied of any continent.
Despite Brexit, U.K. imports to the United States remained stable in 2018, with eight out of ten European destinations. However, the U.K.'s commerce sector will undoubtedly be impacted by Brexit, and the main export destinations may alter significantly. Despite the U.K.'s reliance on the E.U., North Macedonia and Gibraltar have had faster economic growth than the U.S. or the E.U. Korea, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Oman, in contrast, saw substantial development over the previous four years.

The Old Salem Post
Our  Local Tamassee-Salem SC Area News each Monday except holidays       Contact: [email protected]                                Distributed to local businesses, town hall and library.                            Volume 6 Issue 34                               Week of August 22, 2022                https://www.tumblr.com/settings/blog/oldsalempost-blog                                                         Lynne Martin Publishing
EDITOR: One of my recent conversations with Mr. Dean Bare, our area representative on the school board, was directed at the school district spending and that dollars should go into the classrooms, and not in administration. The budget continues to expand, with continued need for more funding. Excuses of  rising costs are accepted as though none of us experience rising costs in our own budgets, while working with the same income. While we make amends to control spending in our own households, why doesn’t the school board and administration be expected to the do same? They are proud educators; however, they cannot control their own budgets. They should be an example for our children.  Mr Bare was hand-picked and appointed to his current seat by the school board, after the untimely death of member Jerry Lee.  The seat is up for election and the position will now be elected by the people.  I intend to speak with the candidates to see where they stand on spending.  I know where Mr. Bare stands from the recent 5% raise in our Superintendent’s salary, now a package deal around $200,000.  We need noncorporate thinkers who are not afraid to ask questions, control budgets, and hold people accountable.    LRMartin                                                                                                            TOWN OF SALEM:  Downtown Market every Sat. 7a-1p.  The Last Downtown Car Show for this year  is Sept 10, 5pm.   We will be collecting Toys for Tots.    + ASHTON RECALLS+           By Ashton Hester      SALEM PETITION OPPOSED PICKET POST SCHOOL IN 1979 - (The following story was in the November 7, 1979 issue of the Keowee Courier. The background is that the Oconee County School Board had recently unanimously approved a plan to consolidate the county's five high schools into three by combining Westminster High and Oakway High and Tamassee-Salem High and Walhalla High. The latter school would be built in Picket Post). . .A petition campaign is underway in the Salem area in opposition to the proposal to build a consolidated high school in Picket Post, which would involve closing the present Tamassee-Salem and Walhalla High Schools. . .A spokesman told the Keowee Courier that the petition is "filled with signatures". . .The leaders of the petition drive dispute a recent report by the School Board that an opinion poll indicated that a majority of Salem area residents supported the Picket Post school. They say that, although the Picket Post proposal got the most votes--63--the combined vote of persons wanting to keep the high school in Salem totaled 73. Those wanting to keep the high school were divided, however, with 49 favoring a four-high-school plan that would consolidate only Oakway and Westminster High Schools, and 24 favoring maintaining five high schools. (Footnote written in 2022: The School Board eventually decided to consolidate Westminster and Oakway High Schools, but in response to public outcries in both the Salem and Walhalla areas, decided against the consolidated Picket Post school. . .The Picket Post proposal again arose in 1992 but was again abandoned after again being opposed by both communities. . .However, about a decade ago, the third try proved to be the "lucky charm," as the School Board--in response to a critical budget-shortage problem and a County Council that refused to provide more school funding--actually built the Picket Post school despite considerable public opposition.)
Healthy practices:  God will make a difference in your life and in your health– if you allow it and are not afraid to pray for God to take away any desire that is unpleasing to Him, and unhealthy for you.  :)  LRM
Jottings from Jeannie: Do Good. Seek Peace, and Go After It!  (Psalms 34: 14)   A Call to Action is sponsoring a 5K race on Monday, September 5th at Norton Thompson Park, Seneca.  This event calls attention to the tragedy of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.  At the end of the race, the audience gathers to kneel before sad little white CROSSES.  These crosses represent approximately 46  SC women and men killed violently in the last year by people whom they LOVED and TRUSTED. Our prayers become a solemn vow.  We promise "those gone too soon" that we will fight hard for a better world for their children.  We confront ugly evil, shake our fists at it, and shine a bright healing light on Doing Good and Seeking Peace!  If you can't join us on Labor Day at the park, please promise me that at 11:15 am that you will recite Psalms 34:14!  When it comes to domestic violence, sadly South Carolina always rates near the worst.  Come to the race!  Learn what you can do! Register at this website:  acalltoaction.org or call 864-710-4224 for information. Now, go hug everyone in your family, and tell them how much love you love them. LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
February 11, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
Today the House impeachment managers wrapped their case against former president Donald Trump. Using the words of the insurgents themselves, the managers argued that he incited the insurrection of January 6, spurring an armed and violent mob to storm the Capitol while Congress was counting the certified electoral votes that awarded the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden.
After yesterday’s dramatic illustrated timeline of the insurrection itself, the managers used their time today establishing that Trump was responsible for sparking that insurrection. They showed the insurrectionists repeating his words—one man read one of his tweets through a bullhorn at the Capitol riot—and insisting that they were acting according to the former president’s instructions.
The managers’ case was reinforced by the fact that the Department of Justice this morning filed a memorandum establishing that Jessica Watkins, a member of the right-wing Oath Keepers paramilitary group, delayed her planned assault on Washington, D.C., until she was certain Trump was behind it. “I am concerned this is an elaborate trap,” she texted on November 9, 2020. “Unless the POTUS himself activates us, it’s not legit. The POTUS has the right to activate units too. If Trump asks me to come, I will. Otherwise, I can’t trust it.”
Again and again, the managers tried to distinguish between Trump and his violent supporters, on the one hand, and the lawmakers of both parties who were their prey, on the other. Again and again, they focused on Trump as the perpetrator of the big lie that the election had been rigged and that he, not Biden, was the rightful victor.
They warned that Trump’s attack on our democracy is not over. Even after all that has happened, he has still not conceded that he lost the election. This refusal to abandon the big lie keeps it potent, enabling him to rally supporters with the argument that fighting for Trump means defending American democracy. It is a deadly inversion of reality.
The House impeachment managers have given Republican senators multiple ways to justify a vote for conviction to their constituents. They have shown how Trump began to incite violence even before the election, in plain sight, and how that led to an assault on the Capitol that came close to costing the lives of our elected officials, including Vice President Mike Pence—a Republican—and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the two people next in line for the presidency if Trump were to be removed from office.
The riot threatened the representatives and senators—including them!—their staffers, and many of their family members who were at the Capitol that day. And yet, even as lawmakers begged Trump to call the rioters off, he did the opposite. He attacked Pence in a tweet even as the vice president was being rushed to safety from the mob.
The managers focused, too, on the terrible toll the attack took on Capitol police. Three of them are now dead, with more than 100 wounded physically and others wounded mentally. Senators could vote to convict out of a determination to protect law enforcement officers, something their constituents say is important to them.
Today, the managers emphasized the many Republican lawmakers who condemned Trump in the wake of the insurrection, including the Cabinet members who resigned their posts, the state governors who called him out, and fellow lawmakers who expressed dismay at his incitement of the rioters.
Finally, the managers warned that, unless Trump is stopped, he will absolutely do such a thing again. They pointed out that the riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, after which the president condoned the white supremacists who killed Heather Heyer, was a rehearsal for the attack on the Michigan state house this summer. That, in turn, was a rehearsal for the attack on the Capitol. As manager Diana DeGette (D-CO) said: “In 2017, it was unfathomable to most of us to think that Charlottesville could happen, just as it was unfathomable to most of us that the Capitol could have been breached on January 6…. Frankly, what unfathomable horrors await us if we do not stand up now and say, no, this is not America.”
Senators were apparently shocked to see how close they came to falling into the hands of the rioters, and yet, although many Republican senators concede that the House managers mounted a compelling case, they continue to say that they do not believe they have the power to convict a former president. This suggests they are looking for an excuse, since the Senate’s vote on this question, which should be definitive, passed on Tuesday by a vote of 56-44. At one point today, at least 18 Republican senators were absent from their desks as the managers were making their case.
It’s unlikely that any of the senators want to acquit Trump because they want him to stay in the political scene. Some of them want his voters, but that itself cuts against wanting him to stay around: they want his voters to elect them, not to reelect him or elect his chosen successor. It’s likely they simply hoped he would fade away as he lost his social media presence and became occupied with the financial and legal troubles that are already piling up.
After all, bankers have distanced themselves from the former president, his businesses appear to be losing money, and a $100 million tax dispute with the IRS is now likely to come to a conclusion after being put on hold for four years. Yesterday, District Attorney Fani Willis, Fulton County, Georgia’s top prosecutor, announced that she is launching a wide-ranging criminal investigation into Trump’s January 2 phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a call that lawyers have suggested broke election laws.
But the Senate trial has shown that maybe he’s not going to fade away. The House impeachment managers have laid out a damning case. The scenes from the insurrection were shocking, and they established a pretty strong sense that Trump is deeply involved in an ongoing attempt to overturn our democracy. It looks possible that the Department of Justice might, in fact, go after the former president and perhaps others with the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
After the past two days, senators who were planning to let Trump off the hook might be worrying they will have to answer to constituents furious that they didn’t do their jobs and instead associated the entire party with a criminal president and the rioters that attacked the Capitol. Already the editorial board of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has lambasted Missouri Senators Josh Hawley and Roy Blunt: “There is no way to credibly argue that Trump protected and defended the Constitution when video evidence shows him directing a mob to storm the Capitol and interrupt constitutionally mandated proceedings to certify the Electoral College result.”
The senators need Trump’s lawyers to do a good enough job tomorrow to give them cover to acquit, and it seems likely those lawyers are not skilled enough to do so. Tonight, Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) visited Trump’s defense team. Cruz said they were “sharing our thoughts” about their legal strategy: it is of note that Cruz was the Solicitor General of Texas before being elected to the Senate, and Lee was an assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah. Also a lawyer, Graham is the former chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The Republican senators who will vote either to convict or acquit the former president must do so knowing that trials associated with the insurrection between now and the next election will keep the story in the news. The question is whether the American people will interpret the story as the impeachment team has framed it, or whether Trump’s lawyers and later Trump himself, if he regains a political foothold, can somehow knock that interpretation aside.
Lead impeachment manager Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who was a constitutional law professor before he went to Congress, seems to understand their dilemma. “Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered,” he told the senators today, quoting political theorist Thomas Paine, “but we have this saving consolation: The more difficult the struggle, the more glorious ... our victory.”
He told them, “Good luck in your deliberations.”
