OH YES. I remember my first day of Society Lessons as a hearing person, where the everything was explained to me. Via Audiobook. FIRST they spoke and said, "you are standing on the ground." It was a life changing revelation, and the world began to spin.

But it did not stop.

THEN they said, "there are fingers on your hands." The sensation of flesh and bone crackling into existence is indescribable, but I did not yet know pain, until they told me, "that hurts." I began screaming immediately.

And yet... it continued.

They explained so much. Chairs. Tables. Walls. The sky. Frogs. Ionizing radiation. Breathing. I was told all of it, in one sitting, and only then did I understand. Only when my ears were bursting with normal hearing knowledges, did they begin... my final test.

A strange wall-chair-finger emerged from the sky-of-the-wall, stood on the ground several times, until it was in front of me. A second one came behind it, this one slimmer. The audiobook gave these things names;

Human. Father. Mother. Door. Walking. It was completely impossible to know what these things were until that very moment.

I watch a human dip a hook into water and produce a fish, and I recall my Society Lessons where they called that "fishing." I am decked in the face by a nefarious hooligan, and I have only the audiobook to thank when I know I have been "punched" by a "bad guy." It was only the magic of verbal-speaking-words-noise that made me understand that there are "other people" and that they "do stuff."

Sometimes, even, in "groups."

Before the Society Lessons Audiobook, I knew nothing. I was pure, innocent, uncorrupted by concepts such as "parents" and "door." I am grateful every day that there is no such concept as "being shown things" or "simple logical reasoning" or "looking."

Blessed be those amongst us who escape the horrors of the Society Lessons Audiobook. I pray that you never learn what anything is. Be free! Free as a bird, which also knows nothing and famously cannot learn. 🤗

rough art tips to learn and then break at your leisure.

the distance between your eyes is roughly one eye. the corners of your mouth dont extend past the middle of each eye. ears are roughly in the middle of the tip of the nose and the eyebrow. the eyes are in the very centre of the head. the neck is just a Little slimmer than the width of the head (varies with fat distribution, but fat tends to build up under the chin). hair is easier to draw when you plot out the hairline and then where it parts. leaving appropriate distance on the side of the face (cheekbone area and back to ear) contributes to making characters look more realistic/hot as hell. i dont know specific tips for that so use reference. an amazing reference/study site is lineofaction.com . if you think of the face in planes it makes it easier to construct (look up tutorials). if you draw a spiral like a tornado it can help you figure out awkward perspective for extended limbs (look up foreshortening coil technique). tangent lines are when two lines intersect and cause visual confusion (when it looks like a line that defines an arm is part of the line that defines a building, for example) and avoiding them makes your art way easier to comprehend. quick trick to good composition: choose a focal point (where you want your viewer to focus), detail that area the most, and make sure various elements of the piece are pointing to that focal point. you can use colours to contrast hue, saturation, and brightness and make certain elements of your drawing stand out. drawing in greyscale can help you figure out values. using black in a piece isn't illegal but you should know what you're doing when you do use it- it desaturates a piece and if used as a shading colour can desaturate and dull whatever youre shading too. if you use almost-black lineart and then add black to darken the very darkest areas it will do a lot to add some nice depth. the tip of your thumb ends just above the start of your index finger- your thumb also has two knuckles and all your other fingers have three. if you see an artist doing something you like (the way they draw noses or eyes or hair or anything else) you can try to copy that and see if you want to incorporate it in your style <- this is ENCOURAGED and how a lot of us learned and developed our styles. there are ways to add wrinkles to faces and bodies without making the character look a million years old, you just have to keep experimenting with it. The smile wrinkles around your muzzle dont connect to your mouth or to your nose; there should be a small space in between smile or nose and the wrinkle line. eyes when viewed in profile are like < aka a little triangle shape. think of the pupil like a disk and apply foreshortening to it (it looks like a line when seen from the side instead of a full round dot). subtle gradients can add a LOT to a piece. texture can also add a LOT. look up Tommy Arnold's work (his murderbot pieces are some of my FAVOURITE) and zoom in. find those random little circles he added and try to figure out why he added them there. light bounces. there's lots of way light bounces. sometimes it even spreads through the skin. i do not know these light tricks yet but i want you to know that they exist. draw a circle to indicate hand placement, draw a straight line between that circle and the shoulder, and then (normally at a right angle) draw a straight line on top of that line to find the placement of the elbow. elbows are normally placed Just above the hip when standing and your arm is at rest. there are no bad colour combos if you're brave enough about it, just fuck with the saturation and brightness until it works. keep playing. try new things. add your own tips to this post if you want or even expand on some ive mentioned here. good luck go ham etc

do you have any tips or tutorials for anatomy and poses? you always make it look natural and fluid!

hiya! I'm not really a professional so take this all with a wee grain of salt, but beyond the two common tips of "practice" and "use references" that I would second, I find it's always helpful to keep the skeletal structure of legs in mind when coming up with poses for cats! Simplified, a quadruped's legs look something like below- keeping these joints etc in mind, you can then push poses while keeping limbs (vaguely) on model!

I usually start a sketch by laying out a pose, planning where I want to put these Z-shaped legs, as well as aspects like a character's head, muzzle, ears, and tail. Think about expression here too- is your character feeling tense or relaxed? Shy or confident? Grumpy or cheerful? Try to accommodate for what you want to get across in posture, stance, and tail position.

Then, build over that guideline and add details!

#extra bonus tips- the elbow doesnt tend to dip below the chest when standing still and the tail is an extension of the spine #sorry if this comes across as 'step 2 draw the rest of the fucking owl'-ish or is omitting a lot im not the best at tutorials hahaha #but hopefully this gives some insight into how i plan my poses when sketching! #also USE REFERENCES!! again!! i use them way less than i should dont be like me in that regard #as well as referencing and studying realistic cat anatomy it can also be very helpful to like #just look at various other wc artists and the anatomy of how they tend to draw cats #eyes ears leg shapes paws muzzles tails.... theres a lot to look at for inspiration out there #but do NOT post traced or very-heavily-referenced-from-other-people art and claim it as your own PLEASE

decided to crochet a sweater and it's going well. i feel like I'm going so slow and doing things wrong but i know I'm doing everything right and going at a very valid pace. it's been a week and I'm probably a quarter of the way done, and it's very normal to take a full month to crochet a sweater. making a granny hexagon cardigan so it's two wobbly pooking hexagon panels that'll turn into a sweater once they're joined together, very easy repetitive work up, I've gotten to a point where if i manage not to think too hard i can do it without looking for a while. once i start thinking i fuck up immediately lol. but it makes it good work to do while watching star trek or YouTube and plenty easy to hold a conversation. feeling slightly discouraged with how quickly it's getting so much longer to complete a round, but logically i know each round adds six clusters, which is 18 stitches. the most recent round i finished was 126 clusters, so 378 stitches (+132 chains between them) which. that's a lot, and on top of it I'm changing colors every few rounds as well. I'm working at a fine pace. that's an insane number of stitches compared to most of the projects I've done. i can easily say about half of my projects have had that many stitches total if not less. it's going to feel like it's taking a long time. but when I'm finished I'll have a sweater. i love the colors i chose, i love the texture of the yarn, I'll be able to throw it in the wash and the fiber mix means it shouldn't shrink any significant amount. i plan to make it just on the large side in case it does a bit. I'm excited and tired and wanted to scream into the void about it

#original #life advice #you can read this as a metaphor but i literally do mean that today i learned a lot about drawing backgrounds and upon surveying my work #i took a moment to imagine - as vividly as i could - a garbled video game announcer voice going LEVEL UP #it's garbled because sound files on classic video games were compressed as fuck and i am imagining like... a ps1 era game. #the kind where it holds up really well to this day and in all of the continuing sequels they #still use a lot of the same sound effects because they're so recognizable and iconic. I can picture the graphics and everything. #what does yours sound like or look like? #it isn't actually important that you do this specific thing but it is good to recognize when you're getting better at something #my favorite thing about learning to draw is when I can focus on a really good tutorial and #improve a skill so quickly that it really feels like I filled out a skill tree with my XP #it isn't always an immediate improvement but i am so low level in background illustration that i still level up with just a little XP #whereas if I want to get better at drawing expressions I don't think there is a single tutorial that will cause me to level up on its own. #just because this is the thing I've always focused on for most of my life and so a lot of the tutorials don't have new information for me #so that skill is at a point where it's just gonna improve slowly as i practice and pick up tips over time. #but I know so little about drawing shops or castles that literally one page of information is increasing my knowledge by 20% at least #Pro tip: the Etherington Brothers tutorials are so good and I was able to find several hundred for free on their website #so good #etherington brothers #how to think when you draw
