applefur toadstep birchfall friendship? on the journey them (and marshkit, rip in peace) were very close friends, and it’d be amazing to see them continue to interact and stay friends after they separate. im pretty sure in one of the guides birchfall, as an apprentice, mentioned being excited to talk to them at his first gathering, but after that it’s never really mentioned at all.
In this rewrite, Marsh and Toad are swapping places!
Marshkit was saved by Brackenfur from the eagle, and has grown into a respected warrior named Marshwing. He's a friend of Birchfall, as ShadowClan has a tentative alliance with ThunderClan through Po3 and their battles are controlled and honorable (unlike canon where they're legitimately hostile).
Marshwing is mentored by Oakfur, and becomes the mentor of Tigerheart.
His sister Applefur is jealous and resentful of him. Their brother Toadkit died in a fox trap that Marshkit was investigating, and Applefur has never been able to forgive Marshwing for it. As they've grown, Marshwing has become a prodigal warrior on 'stolen time' while Applefur feels left behind.
This is how she's pulled into the Dark Forest, at first hoping to get a leg up on him, but eventually having this spite exploited.
She eventually is able to have a takeover of ShadowClan with Redwillow and Ratscar following the death of Russetfur, when Blackstar refuses to lead because of Sol's influence. Blackstar returns at the request of his clanmates, and kicks them out of power.
(And why was Toadkit killed, you ask? Because everyone including myself always confuses his name, Toadfoot, with Toadstep of ThunderClan.)

"Five will become one with the common goal of survival..."
Tumblr media
The death of the clan killer, Ghost, should have signaled an era of peace between the clans. However, the murders continue and relations between clans strain. The last thing anyone wants to do is trust those outside their clan, but when five cats receive a mysterious prophecy and awake in a Twoleg city far from home, their only hope of surviving rests in their ability to put their differences aside and work as one.
WHOA! I almost forgot about the Fatal Five Kitties! Mallick, Brit, Ashley, Charles, and Luba have joined the SAW Warriors AU and they're on a mission!
Individual pics and descriptions below!
Tumblr media
Marshwing (Mallick): a flighty Riverclan tom with a bad habit of overgrooming himself when worried. His father was deputy before dying in battle, leaving Marshwing to struggle under the weight of his legacy. At one point, he met a loner named Brick who let Marshwing help out raiding kittypet homes for food and treats. Feeling like a waste of a warrior, Marshwing wonders if he'll be happier as a kittypet. During the journey of the five, he finally starts to feel useful as he shares his swimming skills and knowledge of kittypet homes with the others.
Tumblr media
Owlshade (Brit): a quiet and analytical Thunderclan she-cat who seems to blend into the shadows. Distrustful of others, she reveals very little about herself or her clan, but she does carefully observe the others and attempts to put together why they were all chosen for this trial.
Tumblr media
Meadowblaze (Ashley): a reserved but smart Windclan she-cat and Ridgepaw's (Brent) mentor. Her leader, Broadstar (Halloran), is an ambitious leader with hopes of expanding Windclan's territory by allying with dangerous rouges and loners and disregarding the warrior code. While many attempt to win Broadstar's favor and embrace a new life of cruelty, Meadowblaze tries to uphold Windclan's fair and noble philosophy and raise her apprentice to be someone who is respected, not feared.
Tumblr media
Breezewhisker (Charles): a cool and collected Windclan tom. Immediately takes on a leadership position within the group and appears to know more about the other cats than he should. Turns out he had been spying on the other clans at his leader's orders in hopes of being chosen as the new deputy once the old one dies. Although his logic and brute strength are valuable, he lacks self-awareness and empathy for others.
Tumblr media
Deerheart (Luba): an ambitious and conflicted Shadowclan she-cat. She's slow to trust the group but still shows a great deal of care for them. During the journey, she starts to question if her home clan's philosophy of self-preservation can't be changed to benefit a greater goal of allowing all clans to thrive. She's no medicine cat, but when the others are hurt, her empathy drives her into action. She finds that she quite likes healing others instead of hurting.

My friends wanted me to draw them as cats- and I already drew me and my other friend, so here’s the rest of them. Thickpaw is well above normal apprentice age- but he just, keeps messing up to get any sort of promotion- much sadly to Beetleflower’s (Gokuharu Gonta) dismay. Despite his appearance he’s lanky and short- one reason why he was kept in the position despite no promotion. Marshwing and Thickpaw like each other- but him being a Medicine Cat Apprentice makes it harder. So instead she focuses on her Warrior duties best she can. Bunnytail is a loud CoastClan Warrior who benefits from Whitestar’s (Angie Yonaga’s lax clan rules)- but the chagrin of everyone else. Shybird was in MistClan, but left- unable to handle the pressure of clan life too well. Sparklepelt is a super fluffy white cat. Super cute pink nose.

are there any leaders, deputies, or medicine cats that could be potential dark forest trainees? i feel like having someone in a position of power as one of the dark forest trainees could make for some really interesting drama/political intrigue
Hmm... it would make for a really good angle. Especially if I'm gonna try and approach OotS with the idea they're trying to put cats in positions of power. I went over every cat looking for some possibilities-- but we're only looking at real opportunity with the deputies. I saved them for last.
Leaders
Unfortunately, no leader in OotS would make sense as a potential trainee.
Blackstar: No Was actually offered the choice to align with the Dark Forest by Runningnose back in the Slash-and-Burn Era. I'm approaching his development post-TPB as him being slowly eaten alive by guilt and becoming repentant by his death after OotS.
Onestar: No Demands loyalty, subservience to himself and StarClan. He doesn't need MORE power because he already is asserting himself and committing to his role. Besides, there's enough WindClan trainees and I would like for him to rightfully distrust the DF trainees, not be displaying hypocrisy in this instance.
Bramblestar: No Already rejected the DF in TNP, doesn't make sense for him to relapse.
Mistystar: No Train with Tigerstar? Misty would sooner kill the guy a TENTH time. Plus-- she killed Leopardstar and sent her here, and it was quite traumatic. I don't think she wants to face her again anytime soon.
Medicine Cats
I thought this section was going to look better and then I realized, this rank is ALSO full of goody two-shoes... but maybe the apprentices?
Flametail and Kestrelflight are possibilities
Littlecloud: VERY no I still need to make that big post I wanted to make about him, but he's actually one of my little favorites. And he's a total nerd with a really rigid sense of justice. He'd actually be upset and betrayed to find out that Runningnose is in the Dark Forest by choice.
Flametail: Possibility Maybe it would be worth it to retool him a bit? Make it so he was training there to learn Secret Medicine but tried to leave, and the DF killed him with the thin ice in retaliation? Only hesitating because I don't want there to be a lot of ShadowClan DF trainees.
Mothwing: Can't.
Willowshine: No Has a strong connection to StarClan to make up for Mothwing's inability to planeshift/talk to spirits, doesn't feel right for her to be going into the DF when she has stuff to do.
Leafpool: No
Jayfeather: No But! He CAN actually go there when he wants to and can probably pull people out at will. He's losing the time traveling stuff so his dreamwalking/planeshifting superpower is actually getting a buff.
Kestrelflight: Possibility But leaning towards a no, because he's overwhelmed with responsibilities and Barkface died in the Forest Territories before he could train him, so StarClan is on his tail. But-- he could still go there hoping to get help from Runningnose, who may have briefly mentored him before his death.
Deputies
THIS is where we've got some material to work with!
Bramblestar's Deputy: Might be Graystripe His first deputy was Squirrelflight, who he demoted when the secret of the three's parentage came out. I know the pick after her is going to be a BAD choice but that can mean a lot of things. It could even be Thornclaw (bracken is dead in late Po3; killed by Applefur, before Firestar dies).
I'm leaning towards the pick being Graystripe, keeping him away from his kids when they're young, and giving me space to show that the clan has mixed feelings about Gray taking Squilf's position and giving me room for him to step down.
Blackstar's Deputy: Russetfur DIES, could make for deputy drama. In the end it's going to be Rowanclaw who becomes the next leader, but maybe Applefur and Marshwing could have been competing for the position? It would be interesting if Applefur was looking for some way to get rid of Marsh without being suspected.
They could even kill each other during the Great Battle. I'd give Marsh kits before then, though, so Tallpoppy's tree doesn't die out again.
Mistyfoot's Deputy: Reedwhisker... or I could shuffle.
Reedwhisker doesn't have to be her FIRST deputy. The first could be an old supporter of Leopardstar who uncovered Mistyfoot's assassination. In fact, it could have been Icewing, who then steps down or is dismissed after the Great Battle.
Though... this would make it strange that Icewing doesn't re-take deputyship for the current events in ASC... but I could just show the clan dismissing her because of her DF training. It's a juicy thought.
Onestar's Deputy: Ashfoot
Nah, Ashfoot's too smart to get wrapped up in this. Plus she's the same age as Bluestar now-- so she's REALLY old, like, well above 15. I was actually considering having her retire before OotS ends and her successor would step down later, after Harespring had a bit of chance to prove himself.

The New Prophecy Kit Saves
Since I'm making the Journey to the Lake much less dangerous and looking to make background characters generally more interesting, I'm un-killing these three ShadowClan cats.
Others might die in their place; but I'm more likely to kill ThunderClan cats as opposed to ShadowClan ones. Those deaths will occur mostly during the Forest's destruction and the WindClan civil war, and kill adult warriors.
Smokepaw -> Smokefoot
The cat who slipped during the climb across the mountains is Smokefoot. The fall injured him, but didn't kill him. The Clans decided to stay with the Tribe until Smokepaw healed, taking the opportunity to gather supplies.
(Side note: I wanted to call him Smokefall for irony, then I realized Smokefoot already exists so it's better to just combine the two.)
Marshkit -> Marshwing
Thanks to popular vote, Marshkit will not die offscreen to a fox trap! He is the kit saved from an eagle by Brackenfur, and he will become a respected warrior named Marshwing, mentored by Oakfur. He eventually goes on the beaver quest in early OotS, and is a serious but dry-humored cat.
Birchfall and Marshwing are the mentors of Dovepaw and Tigerpaw (aged down to match Dove), and both of them secretly miss the connection they had back during the journey.
Applefur, meanwhile, is motivated to train in the Dark Forest out of jealousy for Marshwing. Toadkit is also likely not going to survive to apprenticeship in Marshwing's place, either dying during the destruction of the forest or dying to Marshkit's fateful fox trap.
Talonpaw -> Talonclaw
Being saved by follower request!
His death wasn't really needed, because the vicious kittypets Jacques and Susan didn't need to end his life to prove themselves as a threat. That whole situation is going to get retooled anyway; there was no reason for ThunderClan to get involved.
With Smokepaw surviving, he was able to save Talonpaw from the attack; with both of them coming out injured but alive. As Rowanclaw's first apprentice, Talonclaw will be useful as a supporter of his during his leadership, and the fall of ShadowClan in AvoS.
(I'm unsure if Talonpaw and Smokepaw will become brothers, or mates. I'll decide that once fully committing to a rework of the ShadowClan family tree for Po3.)

Why is applefur jealous of marshwing ?
Her jealousy definitely didn't start off murderously strong. It was pretty standard stuff before the Dark Forest twisted it into open hate.
Marshwing and Applefur are from the same litter, but Marshwing's life is charmed. He's saved from an eagle, by the warrior who becomes deputy of ThunderClan, surviving serious wounds. He's a marvelous apprentice. He grows quickly into a respected warrior. He's picked to go on the journey to save the lake at the beginning of OotS.
Basically; He's a great warrior. It's not too out of left field to be jealous of him.
Another dimension I do want to add though-- Toadkit died in the fox trap that canonically kills Marshkit. He might have died saving his brother. I think it could be VERY juicy if the Dark Forest starts encouraging Applefur to blame Marshwing for this, saying that he was supposed to die instead.

applekit. i love the prefix apple. also hi, hope you're having a good day.
Apple is a super cute prefix, it's a great suffix too.
I got some MASSIVE turnout for Marshkit though, the final tally is looking like it's a 2 to 1 vote... but! Don't worry! I won't forget Applefur either.
My plan for now is to make Toadkit the one who died in a trap (Or, at the very least, he died as an apprentice), and Applefur trains in the Dark Forest like in canon. She's probably compelled to train there out of grief for Toad and jealousy of Marsh.
Marshwing will become an experienced warrior, the mentor of Tigerheart, attend the beaver journey in OotS, and survive past the Great Battle to have some kits to fix the ShadowClan family tree.

Harespring and Kestrelflight are my special little guys, my emotional support background/secondary characters, I love how much love they've gotten and since it seems to be Hare and Kestrel appreciation hour on the blog I just wanted to express how much it puts a smile on my face seeing how they turn out in the rewrite. One question though, is their father Torear going to remain Hare's mentor? I don't think you've said much at all about it and considering parents mentoring their children is a bit of a tabboo it surprises me. Did it slip your mind or is this going to be an exception?
When I do shuffles, I try to make sure that characters keep the cats who were previously mentors or parents somewhere close to them! As you know it all fell into place with Torear becoming the adopted dad/uncle of Kestrel and Hare.
But actually, this time, Harepaw's mentor is Morningflower! Morningflower is getting a big buff, she is going to be WindClan's "Rosepetal" who trains a ton of apprentices. Harepaw is one of them.
Tornear has too many apprentices in-canon imo. He's actually bumped down to two. His first apprentice, Runningbrook, is now Onewhisker's first apprentice, with Whitetail going over to Morningflower as well. His apprentices were Owlwhisker, and Tawnyfur.
Morningflower is going to spread though, I want her to end up with at least three. She's in friendly competition with Oakfur, they hang out at gatherings.

BB!Tigerheart -> Heartstar
For @noisycitrine and @halogenwarrior who wanted more info on the most woman ever.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: An AU version of Tigerheart from Warrior Cats, now named Heartstar. She is a small, lithe russet-brown tabby with a long tail and bright golden stripes. She has a two-colored mane, raptor claws, and oval 'glasses'. There is a bright golden 'heart' on her chest.]
FUN FACT did you know that Canon ShadowClan had 7 male leaders in a row, from Houndstar to the modern arc? I said no. Girl Tigerheart be upon ye.
Names are sacred and carry immense weight in Clan Culture. When a cat is about to become a leader and would have a name conflict with an unfaded ancestor, StarClan renames them. Heartstar was particularly special.
She returned to the Lake after bringing back the love of her life, Dovewing, and died in a raid to take back ShadowClan kits from the Kin's remnants. Tigerheart's father, Rowanstar, couldn't bear to lose his last child. He declared her his deputy, and plunged into the Moonpool with her body.
He drowned the last of his lives away, so that she could live. StarClan itself was awed by this sacrifice, and performed a miracle. Heartstar burst from the water sputtering, ready to rebuild ShadowClan anew.
As a leader, Heartstar is back and ready for the controversy. She watched her Clan fall apart twice, once from Dark Forest meddling and a god's games, and again from Onestar refusing to lend aid during a yellowcough epidemic, and has vowed to never let that happen again.
She's ferociously protective of her family, supporters, and clanmates, in that order, and is not afraid to gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss if she thinks she's doing the right thing.
Clanmew Name: Gaorbabun, Babishai (Tiger + Heartbeating, Heart will Beat + Star)
Alignment: ShadowClan, brief periods as ThunderClan and SkyClan
Relationships: Mate - Dovewing Children (adopted) - Lightleap, Shadowsight, Birchkit, Rowankit Parents - Tawnypelt, Rowanstar Siblings - Dawnpelt, Flametail Nespring - Strikestone, Sleekwhisker, Juniperclaw Mentor - Marshwing
Below the cut is trivia first, then all the changes to the character arc-by-arc, up to OotS, AVoS, and Heartstar's Rise.
Trivia!
Rowanclaw is now the son of Brokenstar along with Littlecloud! They were honor-sired for Newtspeck.
They have a distinct bi-colored mane from their mother, and 'glasses' from their father.
Tigerclaw's family trait is being brown tabbies with raptor claws.
Heartstar got all of the traits because she deserves it
I also miss how she was once described as having 'gold' in an older description so compromise; golden stripes.
I feel like you can't just miraculously resurrect without some kind of cool physical change, so, Heartstar gets to have a raised heart-shaped keloid scar on her chest.
She didn't sire any of her kittens; Light and Shadow were Bumblestripe's, and Strikestone's death left two more behind. It's free baby.
Heartstar fights in perfect tandem with Dovewing. Heartstar is so small that she can leap freely around and under her, skilled enough to never trip her up.
Their favorite tactic is for Dovewing to grapple with a huge opponent, allowing Heartstar to pop like a weasel from up between her legs to viciously attack the opponent's belly.
Tigerheart was the smallest member of the Tigerkin family, by far. In a lineup of record-setting Clan giants, Heartstar is barely larger than an apprentice.
She is much smaller than her entire family. Pocket pikachu.
Heartstar's favorite food is crayfish. She likes how most Clans are unsettled by this, Reedclaw was unbothered.
BB!OotS
Change NUMBER ONE is that Tigerpaw is the only survivor of Tawnypelt's second litter, born during the Cruel Season that saw the rise of Bramblestar.
A tom-kit initially named Goldenkit, the other kits in the litter died to illness. Before her last child died, Tawnypelt angrily challenged StarClan by renaming the survivor Tigerkit.
"Go on, take a tiger into the stars so it can bite your faces off. No? Thought so."
Dawnpelt and Flametail were their cool older siblings, Tigerkit especially idolized Dawnpelt and her quick sass.
The rowdy and troublesome kit was assigned to Marshwing, the cat that Brackenfur saved from an eagle during the Great Journey, now one of ShadowClan's finest warriors.
Marshwing's mentor was Oakfur, who liked to joke that whenever Marsh wanted to admit defeat he'd take the little twerp instead.
Tigerpaw met Dovepaw on the journey to unblock the southern river.
During this time, Dovepaw made her realize that she was definitely not a boy and probably also a lesbian.
This was to Rowanclaw's soft amusement when she returned home, as he is also transgender and figured it out after going on a long journey
"Maybe if we send you out again you'll come back with another one"
Dove and Tiger were fast friends after this eye-opening trip. Dove's perspective expanded to include the other Clans and the death of Rippletail made her realize how much they matter.
Tiger's perspective expanded to, "I do whatever i want because I want to see Dovewing"
Unfortunately for them, tensions between ThunderClan and ShadowClan were beginning to sour. Blackstar and Russetfur were not fond of the new management style of Bramblestar and his aggressive deputy, Thornclaw, both of which had recently taken power shortly before Tigerheart was born.
Unknown to Bramblestar, Thornclaw was training in the Dark Forest, and trying to encourage him to act more aggressively than Firestar.
Tigerpaw started training in the Dark Forest through her good friend Redpaw, who was brought in through his mentor Applefur. Applefur was the sister of Marshwing.
Her paternal grandfather was Brokenstar, and her maternal grandfather was the infamous Tigerstar. If Tawnypelt had given her this name to ward away StarClan and protect her death... then surely there was a power to gain from him?
Tigerstar took a shine to his granddaughter immediately, introducing her to his dead son, Hawkfrost.
It was very surprising to not find Brokenstar in the Place of No Stars, but Runningnose was there to... "explain" is not the right word, more like, "cryptically leave breadcrumbs of answers"
Tigerpaw was often pitted against Ivypaw in particular, as if their mentors considered them rivals. It fostered a resentment between them, especially as Dovewing began to speak highly of Tigerheart.
Tigerheart remained a supporting character, someone that Dovewing was able to talk to for a different perspective from her father Lionblaze and sister Ivypool, until near the end of the arc during a fateful battle
Attacking ShadowClan for control of a contested berry patch, Russetfur was killed, and Blackstar was devastated.
A troublemaking calico creature slid into his good graces. Sol, God of Chaos and Games, convinced him to abandon his leadership.
In the scramble, Redwillow, Ratscar, and Applefur took control of ShadowClan, and started enforcing their own rules. Tigerheart was more cunning than them, and realized they were not going to be able to keep power.
She was threading a thin needle, not openly supporting her fellow Dark Forest trainees, and she knew it.
When they were thrown out of power by Rowanclaw rallying Blackstar to return to power, Tigerstar punished them harshly in the Dark Forest and praised Tigerheart for her foresight.
Shortly after, Flametail had figured out the plot. Redwillow, Ratscar, and Applefur were freakishly strong and Thornclaw was encouraging Bramblestar not to help. They were all in cahoots!
The Dark Forest used their powers to kill him so he'd be silent, ice cracked by demonic meddling.
Tigerheart didn't know if she was going to be able to save his soul, but she had to try. Once again, Tigerstar had ignored the warning sign to preserve his family, calling off the execution.
In that moment, it proved to Hawkfrost that he was undeniably playing favorites. It wasn't about the plan. It wasn't about breaking out of the Dark Forest. It was all another project for Tigerstar's ego... and he was not valued like his bloodline through Tawnypelt.
(Go check out my meta intentions with Hawk's redemption arc over here!)
During the Great Battle, Tigerheart stayed to watch the embarrassment of the first attack, but defected as soon as the fighting got serious in the second one. She wasn't going to hurt her Clanmates, haughtily announcing that this was the best opportunity to, "join the winning side."
After the fight, Dovewing's powers started to ebb away... taking her hearing with it. Meeting with Tigerheart was always refreshing, sometimes it felt like she was the only one who really 'understood' what she wanted.
Things began to get serious when Tigerheart's apprentice, Sleekpaw, developed a rebellious streak, and a group of strange cats arrived at the lake. Onestar reacted badly, and ShadowClan fell to the kin.
BB!AVoS
If Tigerheart has any regrets, it's how she was careless with her niece. She didn't think it was a problem to just let her work it out.
It seemed... harmless. Kids who wanted to feel cool and powerful, she could empathize with that.
The apprentices weren't wrong, at first. The way Onestar immediately became upset about the outsiders, the way two kits were separated because of a vague prophecy, how Clans refused to cooperate even after everything. Tigerheart was frustrated by much of it too.
But there was something wrong about Darktail. Especially when he announced that he was accepting any cat who felt wronged and excluded from Clan society.
Maybe the impulse was harmless. Maybe Darktail was the problem in the end. In any case, the yellowcough outbreak ravaged ShadowClan and the Kin, and WindClan refused to let either of them collect mullein to treat their sick.
Dying to yellowcough is a horrible fate. Catmint can cure, but mullein must be used to prevent lung damage. Tigerheart watched clanmates survive the illness, only to choke to death in the end.
Crowfrost, the deputy and Tigerheart's brother-in-law, was one of them.
Crowfeather, Harespring, and Heathertail went behind Onestar's back to deliver what they could, but too late to save many cats that Tigerheart loved.
After this, ShadowClan quickly fell apart. The Kin was stronger, having immediately kicked the sick out of their group and quarantined.
Cats like Scorchfur said that if Rowanstar wasn't a weak leader, he would have made "hard choices" and done the same
Tigerheart realized that every group had a different reason for following the Kin. Some wanted Clans to be harsher. Some wanted more diplomacy. Others were just looking for connection.
She's smarter than most, and realized that this was much like the Dark Forest. The Kin was everything and nothing, and that meant there was probably an ulterior motive behind it.
They couldn't be trusted.
But no one listened to her. ShadowClan crumbled, she had to flee, and her last memory of her sister Dawnpelt is the image of her worried expression over her shoulder, leaving her behind in the Kin's new camp.
Dawnpelt wouldn't separate herself from her kits, including Sleekwhisker.
An ancient curse was filled yet again, tabby tiger watching their golden sibling fade away.
While staying with ThunderClan, Tigerheart found herself wrapped up in the messy sort-of-relationship between Dovewing and Bumblestripe
Dovewing was clearly unhappy, caught between two uncertain options, growing increasingly frustrated with ThunderClan
When Violetshine brought SkyClan back to the Lake for the final fight with the Kin, Tigerheart decided she needed to go be with her freed Clanmates, wherever they were to go.
Tigerheart asked her to come, but Dovewing wasn't ready. She couldn't leave her Clan, especially not when it wasn't even clear if the ex-ShadowClan cats would be fully accepted into SkyClan
Shortly after making that choice, Dovewing became pregnant. Dread twisted into panic as she realized she didn't want to raise kits with Bumblestripe, the thought of ThunderClan constantly speaking over her as a parent sunk in, and the knowledge that she had already turned Tigerheart down overwhelmed her.
With ShadowClan disbanded, Rowanclaw refusing to choose a new deputy and rejecting his remaining lives, Tigerheart and the survivors had to try and get used to being part of SkyClan.
Heartstar's Rise
This is a summary; go ahead and see the 1st draft outline of Heartstar's Rise over here!
After Dovewing choose Bumblestripe over her, Tigerheart returned to the ShadowClan survivors
They had been annexed into SkyClan, as Rowanstar was refusing to lead after his Clan fell apart under his watch
He never replaced Crowfrost after his horrible death, and was calling himself "Rowanclaw."
Ironic, that he was now in the same position as Blackstar, just before he was made deputy... but this time, there was a safer, more stable Clan for his cats to serve. He was convinced he was doing the correct thing.
This was causing problems related to the ex-ShadowClan cats having a lack of autonomy over themselves; they were no longer a Clan, but still felt like one.
They didn't want to be SkyClan cats. They were ShadowClan.
Tigerheart was more of a leader than Rowanclaw, but he was insisting ShadowClan would never have another star to its name.
"Let it rest in peace."
But before she could hatch a plan, Dovewing vanished, and Tigerheart was told by Poppyfrost (open to change) that she fled because she was pregnant.
So, of course, Tigerheart charged off to go find her.
After traveling far, far east for many days, she hit the church of the Guardians.
While there, her resolve to rebuild ShadowClan only grew stronger, though she promised Dovewing that this time... it was her choice.
She would stay and raise the kits with her, become a Guardian. Anything.
Dovewing, however, felt that this wasn't right either. Tigerheart needed to get home, her love of ShadowClan was completely different from Dovewing's dread for ThunderClan.
And... though she loved it here, she would love being wherever Tigerheart was.
Several guardians decided to join them for their own reasons; Blaze, Ant, and Cinnamon.
Spiresight is probably not going to be one of these (open to change); because he is now the leader of the Guardians. His name refers to the Guardian's new leader ability to sense anything that happens in their territory through the flora that grows there. It was not a name given by Tigerheart.
They came back to SkyClan and ex-ShadowClan cats having an argument over kittens that the Kin's remnants were still in possession of.
Yarrowleaf had been exiled from the Kin remnants and was begging for them to go back and 'save' the newborns Hopkit and Flaxkit.
The ex-Shadow cats wanted to launch an attack to steal back their own kittens and those of dead relatives; Leafstar was vetoing this out of a mix of wanting peace and seeing that the Kin remnants also had a right to the kits through being parents, relatives, etc.
Yarrowleaf especially; how could she know if she was telling the truth that Nettle was a danger to the kits? Yarrowleaf could have been exiled because she was the danger.
Tigerheart decided that enough was enough. ShadowClan was clearly still a separate Clan in their hearts, and they should be making their own choices, not begging someone else's leader for permission.
She will make controversial, ShadowClan-centric choices as a leader-- this time around, I want it to be less "black-and-white," so that the Kin remnants aren't completely evil and there's nuance to this situation... which Tigerheart tramples, displaying how she makes choices.
But, this time, the raid has a consequence; Tigerheart died in the attack.
However, Dovewing couldn't accept this, and brought her to the Moonpool in desperation.
Once there, Rowanstar refused to watch another child die. Declaring her his deputy, he grabbed her body and dove into the water, drowning away all of his lives so that she could live.
StarClan was touched by this heroic display of self-sacrifice, and was emotional enough to perform a miracle; Rowanstar's last life became Heartstar's first.
And with that life, Rowanstar gave her strength. Strength he used for one last kick, to send her back up to the surface of the pool as he sunk into the abyss below.
After this, Heartstar rebuilds ShadowClan. She can be a very biased leader, often ending up in situations where she lets her family off the hook easier than other warriors, or doling out 'theatrical' punishments just to say she did it. On that note, there are aspects of the code she barely cares about.
For this reason, even with the Clan she has the achievement of rebuilding, she can be quite polarizing. Her supporters adore her; her detractors despise her. This hasn't inhibited her ability to rule though...... yet.
(Better Bones does not cover arcs that are not done yet!)
Her political profile is largely 'soft' Traditionalism. She believes that ShadowClan must come first and that fighting keeps the Clans strong, but is committed to preserving the strength of the other four and does a lot of diplomacy. On Clan collaboration, she leans towards Fire Alone. On most other things, she leans Traditionalist.

I know we’ve learned a lot about Blossomfall but can you tell me why she defected so late in the battle and why she ended up defecting? I would love to know how the battle went for her, was it because of Ivypool she defected? Since it was stated they had a brief relationship
I'm still working out the full logistics of the battle, but the full outline of the Night Of The True Eclipse goes kinda like this;
ThunderClan knows their exact plan because of Ivypool, and as soon as she vanishes, tries to get to convincing the other Clans to rally together
"They want to kill everyone in power and take over our Clans, just like they did to Shadow"
The politics here are patchy but Shadow is probably easy to convince, since they aren't looking for a repeat of Apple/Red/Rat's little stunt.
And WindClan has too many defectors to have much choice
RiverClan needs more coaxing
I want to write a speech here that convinces them to all unite because I LOVE rallying speeches like that
DARK FOREST
At the launch point, Tigerstar is getting the soldiers organized
They will move in blocks, and use the tunnels to jump out wherever they need
They don't need to slaughter everyone, stay focused on your targets.
Beetlewhisker is killed around this point
Icewing goes into Protect Mode, gathering the softer cats and defending them
But those cats, Mousewhisker, Minnowtail, Harespring, they're united in finding some way out of this
Ivypool asks her mentor Hawkfrost: "do you think we have a chance?"
Hawk: "......" (no)
There will be 3 battles, as the plan falls apart
FIGHTS
The Clan cat plan was to mix up the fighters in each camp and scramble the attacker's expectations, setting traps and ambushes and ensuring that NO NONCOMBATANTS (elders, kits) were present.
The first fight demonstrates this, showing how caught off guard the demons are.
In this fight comes the first set of defectors, Mouse, Hare, Minnow. Cats who turned as soon as they had the chance.
Featherwhisker is a DF cat who defects here as well, tending to the wounds of all cats
Ivypool planned to break it off here, but Blossom, Hawk, and others are still here. She can't leave them.
She meets Dovewing's eyes and charges off
The SECOND battle is even larger, now everyone is being more indiscriminate knowing this cannot be a Blitz to just kill the leaders.
A lot more cats die in this one, it's a proper middle ages clash of armies
There is a sea of screeching and yowling cats, tangled like a solid, writhing pelt
Lionblaze is a one-man-army but there's too many cats! The Clans can't keep up with their ability to teleport out of tunnels and get instant reinforcements
I am also adding: Spirits heal faster than the living. What could take out a mortal for days is healed in an hour for a spirit, because they do not have physical bodies.
Spiderleg catches Toadstep in his mouth during this moment and stops just short of snapping his neck
Everything goes quiet for him in this moment, the screaming and hissing, and all he can hear is the gargle of Toadstep choking. The taste of blood stings his tongue
He drops him, frozen in place as he realizes what he's doing
Either Rosepetal or Lionblaze shows up here though and BONKS him hard, and he runs off
When the Dark Forest retreats, they stream away like a wave lapping the beach and leave a floor of bodies behind them. Dead, dying, bleeding cats. Some of them are moving, but so mauled they aren't recognizable.
Some of the Dark Forest trainees are with them, Sunstrike is so badly injured she can't move. Furzepelt is trembling, clinging to her and trying to apply pressure to one of the wounds, begging for mercy
Marshwing is laying next to the body of Applefur, having fought her to exhaustion. When Birchfall runs up to his old journey friends, Marsh grins,
"We sure came a long way just to end up in deep dung, aye?"
Perceiving this carnage is too much for Jayfeather. What's the good of his stupid powers?! What's the point of STARCLAN if the damned cats are able to do so much more than them??
He's pissed, he's furious, he takes his stupid stick and jams it into the ground. Rips a clump of fur off a dying Dark Forest warrior, takes the blood of a dead mortal, and hesitates before biting his pinky claw clean off.
Blood of the dead, pelt of the damned, claw of a spirit from beyond StarClan
Featherwhisker: "ooo channeling on a moonlit night? Love that"
He leans his head on his staff as the hum of stars churns into a roar in his ears
MEANWHILE the Dark Forest cats are regrouping
The losses were baaaad.
Even some of the most ardent supporters are wavering.
Tigerclaw's newest plan: HURT THEM. If the Clans remember this night in infamy, that is a victory. Make an entire gap in the generational record, time to target the children
Hawkfrost reaches the final point on his redemption arc: "no im not doing that"
FIGHT
Hawkfrost is considered the second strongest fighter, and Tigerstar WRECKS him, mauled.
Ivypool is UPSET
It was brutal and most of the followers are terrified. Tigerstar says, "anyone else want to argue?"
Ivy drags Hawkfrost off, and as a final chapter with him before he fades JUST as they reach the Dark Forest Meadow.
She thinks he's dead, and he kinda is. We won't see him for several more arcs.
BUT NOW Jay is in heaven bringing StarClan Warriors down.
He resurrected his long-dead stick, and it stands as a massive tree in the stars. He fits as many angels as can fit onto its branches;
Firestar, Moleflight, Russetfur, Deerfoot, Stonefur, and the blue meanie and cowboy curtis and jambi the genie robocop terminator captain kirk darth vader lo pan superman every single power ranger--
AND THEN he brings them down on the tree like an elevator
But this is taking time, the tree is growing before their eyes and Jayfeather is open-eyed and stars are dancing in his sightless gaze
Then a sopping wet, brown tabby appears, breathless
It's Lizardtail, a DF trainee, he desperately explains that they are attacking the kits, please help
Dovewing confirms he is not lying. They've changed the plan and she can hear them barreling towards the noncombatants
They haven't reached them yet though, Lizardtail bought them time
He falls to the ground exhausted, having run, swam across the lake, and then run again
Mistystar makes an awed comment about his hallowed flight, which will become his honor title later. Hallowflight.
FINAL BATTLE
Dustpelt goes down swinging, reinforcing the bramble walls, assuring his kits Lily and Seed that he won't let anyone hurt them
Millie and Blossomfall face off, Blossom vowing she'll end Briarlight
Briarlight cuts through, "Bloss... do you really hate me like that?"
"YES I DO!" (pause. No she doesn't. However they do get interrupted in the chaos)
The first of the Clan combatants show up, pairing off with their rivals.
Ivypool is back, looking absolutely destroyed. She ends up pleading to Bloss that she doesn't want to lose her too
This is when she defects.
Up next, the Tiger/Scourge/Black battle
When Tigerstar wins the match, the sky brightens, and the stars begin to fall.
And that's when Firestar and the StarClan Reinforcements come in to end this
Brackenfur and Thornclaw face off. Mistystar fights alongside her brothers. Many such cases
When Firestar wins, ending Tigerstar's reign of terror, the battle is over.
The last of the DF fighters who fought to the end are captured. The dark forest warriors who stay too long become incorporeal as the Eclipse passes over the moon, leaving just the trainees.

One of the anons that’s rereading to TNP! Do you have any notes for Birchfall? He was the only TC kit that survived on the journey - do any other TC kits survive, and if not how does this affect his personality later on, or his relationship with the DF?
he’s my blorbo <3
Tumblr media
[ID: BB!Birchfall, a stone-brown tabby with thin stripes and speckling. He has a face-plate marking, a stripe just below it, and amber eyes.]
People don't talk enough about how the cats don't seem to have lasting trauma about losing their home of a dozen generations; let alone that the first major events in Birchfall's life were the horrible deaths of almost his entire family.
Are his first memories the sound of his mother's tears? Or the roar of the chainsaws? Was he even large enough to take his own steps on the journey or was he carried into the unknown?
also he has big naturals.
Clanmew name: Pyachfewl (Downy Birch + Fell)
He is the only surviving ThunderClan kitten from the journey.
Hollykit and Larchkit died when he was really young, but he remembers Holly a little better.
Birch palled around with Spiderpaw during the Great Journey, as the apprentices bonded and made new foods and such. Like a little-brother-tag-a-long.
When he wasn't doing that, he became close with Tallpoppy's litter; Toadkit, Applekit, and Marshkit.
The Journey Generation is VERY strange. They had a formative part of their lives where the cats of all Clans needed to depend on each other; so politically they end up with some very unique opinions on cross-Clan friendships.
Toadkit dies in a snare, but Birch, Apple, and Marsh long for their old friendship.
Losing three siblings, his home, being forcefully separated from his friends, and then one of those friends dying horribly probably contributed to his Problems.
DOVEWING AND IVYPOOL are no longer his kits! He was Dovewing's beloved mentor!
In return, Spotfur and Duststripe (prev. sorrelstripe) are now his.
He has his dad Dustpelt's face-shield thing, and a couple of his mother's spots.
In terms of personality, Birch is playful but also kind of a hardass. Guy who will hoot and holler down a zipline but chew you out if you go down without a helmet.
Birchfall has PTSD. ANY human activity, like camping, hiking, or even just boating makes him very upset and can bring on anxiety and nightmares.
When he is stressed, this tends to come out as anger or protectiveness. He doesn't like being separated from his loved ones.
He was an anxious, overbearing father when Whitewing had Duststripe. They worked through it.
Whitewing is deaf! They speak through glyphs, lipreading, and they have a personal system of body language which, if polished, could be the basis for Clan signs.
But, they haven't quite had a chance to consider that... had Dovewing stayed longer, something might have come of it. A lost possibility.
He does remain close to his apprentice when she leaves though... he understands, more than most cats.
If Marshwing is still alive post-Great Battle, he often asks Dove to pass on news.
Stats: Patrol guy. Observant, good at gathering materials. Prefers operating in groups.

Note
was there a spike in half-clan relationships after the journey to the lake?
Massively so, yes.
And friendships, too. Something about that journey really highlighted how absurd it was to just... go back to normal. Birchfall lost his entire litter and got so close to Applefur and Marshwing that losing them was like losing his siblings again.
Swallowtail had Rippletail and Rainstorm, from Rainwhisker. Her brother Beechfur sired Sedgewhisker and Thistleheart. Harestar, Kestrelflight, and Owlclaw are all brothers from a Mudclaw x Whitewater coupling that they mutually agreed was going to remain an honor siring.
It's a lot of cats.

Honestly ShadowClan is a favorite so it's kind of tragic how much of a mess it is-- I think Tallpoppy's line is a good candidate for revival (Marshkit Lives And Has Descendants arc 2k23)
Also as an aside Tawnypelt really saw the writing on the wall for how much of a mess ThunderClan would become later on. Our girl just dipped and went to live her best life. Good for her. 10x better than her sucky brother. Tawnypelt supremacy
I'm not sure WHO it is, but Marshwing WILL be having descendants. That is a promise. They were also, probably, apprenticed-aged during the BOTTE when their father dies.
Marsh goes out in Wave 2 of the fight, ripping and being ripped to shreds by his sister Applefur. In exchange, Toadkit is going to die in the trap intended for Marsh.
...unless, of course, I end up needing him :/ It really is an all hands on deck situation.

So in Book 2 of Starless clan, Birchkit and Rowankit (Tigerheartstar's and Dovewing's 2nd litter) are announced at a gathering to be named after Heartstar and Dove's fathers. Like its around 2 whole pages or so, and it focuses on Birchfall a bit too. How are you going to do that in your Rewrite because I cannot see Dove naming Birchkit Lionkit or Jaykit...I can see Ivypool doing it though lool.
Birchfall was Dovewing's beloved mentor! She actually misses him quite a bit! Birch often fought with Lionblaze about what Dovepaw was going to learn, as Lion wanted to make Dove put ThunderClan (and the prophecy) above all else while Birchfall was interested in introducing her to his buddies.
Birchkit was heavily influenced by being on the Great Journey, forming a very strong bond with Tallpoppy's kittens. Marshwing, now the mentor of Tigerpaw, struggles with how close he still wants to be with his childhood friend. Especially as tensions between the two Clans sour when Bramblestar takes power.
There are people Dovewing misses. Birchfall is one of those special few.
