PLEASE make Whitewater be the one who kills Weaselkit. It would be so (tragically) cool, like just thinking about it reminds me of other amazing BB scenes like the Elderberry and Ferncloud scene but on a smaller, background character scale. It would also be a cool parallel type thing to Spiderleg who attempts to kill his son during the same battle. Obviously Spiderleg and Toadstep don’t personally care about the death of a non-Thunderclan kit, so it’s not like they would be aware of the other family murder happening, but WE would know. And we would be shitting our pants. (I’m a sucker for generational trauma and parents failing to protect their children in fiction please mister bonefall)
I HAVE to do it. It fits too well. It's absolutely shockingly tragic and horrrible. Hell opened up and Owlclaw's worst nightmare came lunging out. I have so many thoughts.
Owlclaw has had a whole life dealing with the neglect and abuse he went through, taking it out on others as a bully, and it's only now seeming to get any better
Mentor Oakfur being even more of a parent to him than any other apprentice he's had, knowing Owlpaw needed it.
Whitewater had FINALLY died. It hurt like nothing else, because in spite of everything he loved his mother... but he was FREE
And maybe she was, too. Maybe in StarClan she could watch over him, perhaps now with distance her memory can be something positive.
There was a time he might have wished suffering on her. But he's going to be a dad, now. He's learned that holding onto grudges never seems to do anything constructive.
He started his new life with Pinenose, still in their honeymoon phase. They're a young couple and everything is moving fast, they're welcoming two little twins.
Weaselkit and... Happykit. He still thinks it's silly, but he said it as a sardonic joke because he couldn't think of a good name and Pinenose beamed. How could he burst her bubble?
He has NO idea that his mother didn't ascend to StarClan. Shes doonstairs. He's daring to assume the best, and she's embracing the worst.
She doesn't need long to be completely onboard with Tigerstar's scheme. She didn't even need a discussion with Hawkfrost. The only reason StarClan would throw her down here is because there's a problem.
So, she'll put it right.
The IMMEDIATE validation she feels seeing Harespring training in the Dark Forest is intoxicating. They ARE cursed!! One of them already found its way here!
(AND the spawn of that damn TRAITOR, Crowfeather. The bastard who betrayed Mudclaw's coup.)
Harespring started training here out of curiosity, and a speck of heresy to be totally honest. He wanted to know his biofather, Mudclaw, and StarClan couldn't be all that wonderful if it would allow his brother Kestrelflight to be forced into the Cleric's den so young.
But NOW, having met Mudclaw and hearing his side of the story, and now WHITEWATER landing here as well...
...he has never had stronger faith in StarClan before. Mudclaw was horrible enough. Whitewater is unhinged.
There is no doubt in his mind that these two belong here. The sad stories are outweighed by cases like these, so in his opinion, there SURELY must be things he doesn't know about innocuous cats like Houndleap and Featherwhisker.
He hates coming here, every moment he's trapped with one of his bioparents is a moment he wishes he was spending with papa Torear.
Harespring betrays the Dark Forest the minute he has a chance to. But it doesn't stop Whitewater.
Weaselkit's death happened so fast and they were so young that Happykit can barely remember it. Was it after Dustpelt crunched? ...he thinks it was during.
I can't imagine Happykit will be told about Whitewater until he's much older, but... he knows Weaselkit's death is what drives the wedge between his parents
(Of course that's too simple to be correct. Happy's smart in the way that you get when you have to grow up quick, but still a kid at the end of the day. Owlclaw backslid into old, destructive ways. Pinenose can't handle him and their child and her grief at the same time. They were a young couple to begin with. It shattered like glass.)
I'm not sure who dealt with Whitewater during the Battle of the True Eclipse, but she is definitely double dead. Part of me wants to make it Spikefur, Pinenose's next mate. But Owlclaw dealing with his mother a minute too late, after FINALLY finding peace with it all, is also gut-wrenching.

ngl, I feel like Dark Souls was never really that difficult. I mean, my non-gamer friend got past Ornstein and Smough (with me coaching him but regardless it was all his own effort and knowledge with me as a quicker google search at most), sure, it's difficult, but only in that, you aren't given a cheese for every single encounter, and those that exist are genuinely less fun than actually improving.
The whole point of Dark Souls was Improving both your character and yourself. Getting armor and weapons, leveling up, that's character stuff, important given how they handle stat systems, but it doesn't make things Easy, just shaves off difficulty. That's intentional and very directed.
For you, you improved by exploring the world, finding information, experimenting with all sorts of equipment, positions, attacks, armors, you learned the enemies' patterns, sizes, speeds, silhouettes, and the game's never punching you as hard as it possibly can and telling you just to "git gud" Dark Souls was never "git gud" it was always "get prepared" "learn more" "experiment more" "grow as a person" "grow as a character"
To me, it's been irreparably ignored to focus solely on difficulty and obscure lore not even partially meant to be entirely learned by the average player. They utterly removed the world design for what can best be described as OOT's world design but worse. If anything is hidden you never feel good finding it because it's like finding a needle in hyrule field, the enemy placement is garbage, and of course, it's gotta go faster and faster and faster every subsequent game. Gotta keep the streamer's audience engaged! Marketing is a cinch when your gameplay is designed near entirely around advertising!
I've always felt that combat was DS's weakest link, that doesn't mean it's bad, just that, when you put Literally Everything Else on the table, combat's simply a Very small part of what you do. You're spending Far more time preparing and learning before fighting. And yet, Game of all Time. Not DS2, not DS2's DLC meant to just make it harder, not DS3's...bleh, just, just bleh, not BB, not ER. Dark Souls. Because it was a well rounded game, even when it's second half is utterly atrocious.
I guarantee my non-gamer friend cannot get further than I have in DS2/3/ER. Not that he did in DS, but he at least wants to come back to DS and complete the game. DS3/ER just makes you honestly not even want to come back. Why bother? There's nothing more I can do but devote time like a second job to improving a skill that will Never Benefit Me as much as Dark Souls has in my life.
Dark Souls gave you challenges that appeared insurmountable. But what the developer's did to keep you engaged and hopeful, was that they proved there's an Intention and Design to what you're encountering. You're only intimidated because you don't know enough. When you fail, you learn more, you grow more confident, and you try again. If that fails, you explore more, you try more, you experiment more, if that fails, you better your equipment, you grow your character, and if that fails, you know by then, it's down to You to "git gud".
DS2 onwards has None of that. It's just "git gud" there is no other place to go that makes this place feel or play any better, no amount of levels or equipment will honestly feel like they make much of a difference and there's So Much Garbage inbetween all of that. By the end of a boss fight I failed, I never think "Hmm, I should try this!" because I already did and it didn't work. Nothing gives you an advantage, it's either full on cheesing, or waste as much time as humanly possible going BACK to the god damn cheesy boss fight hoping this time the AI doesn't break in such a way that's impossible to ever predict or counter or care.
Don't get me started on how fast these games are getting but the camera seems to keep getting closer and closer to the player since DS1, and enemies larger and larger, and the combat areas are either so fucking small, or cluttered to shit, that you Literally Cannot See near every god damn combat situation.
Remember when the difficulty was due Near Entirely to the player lacking information and knowledge, and now-a-days, near anyone can beat DS with a guide? Good times. I sure wish they made games you're meant to have fun and genuinely get invested into. Now it's about making the combat visually sell itself when the gameplay aspect is not made to be fun. I don't find any enjoyment in having to quickly put in button combinations in DDR formatted patterns.
I seriously can't stop. You know what the BEST part of the weakest link, combat, is? That you and the enemy are Just As Vulnerable When Attacking. When they attack, if you aren't hit, you can go for it a hit. It's Very Mechanical and thus means you can Learn and Improve.
Enemy attacks, I dodge left, I get a hit, they're stunned, I get another hit, they go for an attack, I dodge.
Simplified, but it sure is nice to See The Enemy and Know What They're Doing based on Knowledge I Accrued Fighting It.
Now it's
Enemy attacks, attacks, attacks, attacks, attacks, now you have Maybe a Chance at a Single Swing. Repeat forever until the bulletsponge stops moving.
I get that it's it's own thing, but my god it's never been nearly as good as DS's combat. Just looks cool. Doesn't feel cool at all. It feels very lame, just bizarre to me to make DDR-like combat in place of an actual challenge you're meant to figure out, not just eventually get past. Hard to explain, but in DS, if something seemed insurmountable, it was an illusion of sorts, still difficult, but not as impossible as it seemed. What felt random and loose now feels tight and responsive. That's Supposed TO HAPPEN.
But it Never happens in any subsequent game. Every boss fight I always am pissed. Because it's never cool, or fun, it's just frustrating and when it's done I just sigh, and try to move on while ranting about just about every aspect because MY GOD no one playtested that! No one! Not one soul thinks that was a well designed moment of gameplay! Then hope to god it never gets that bad again. Then it does.
It's like...DS1's first half was a total fluke, and it's second half just permanently poisoned the rest of the series. Because that second half is just DS2, it's just DS3, it's just ER. There's not an interconnected world or any feeling that these places are even in the same universe. It's Hallways. That lead to the next level. Imagine the first Zelda's Dungeons, that's DS1's second half onwards, except each dungeon is connected by a hallway, or elevator. Just utterly boring. "You're stuck here til you're done here" simply didn't happen every turn in the first half.
Just really don't know how it went so off the rails. All I can really think is that it's all about difficulty. And god forbid if their game is FUN instead of HARD! They might just get another Game of All Time that way! And God knows No one Wants that!
To be clear, it's not about "the game is too hard" it's that it's Entirely focused on keeping that faux lineage it genuinely never had or earned. Just marketed.
If you want a harder Dark Souls, there's a Plethora of challenges you can do. Not a one feels forced honestly. Soul LV1, magic/bows only, heavy load only, there's so many ways to play DS1 that, simply put, aren't as feasible, nor as interesting or fun in subsequent games.
Oh I got it! It's like Castlevania SOTN vs Castlevania 2. Sure, 2's not as bad as it's made out to be, but it sure isn't well regarded. Meanwhile SOTN has exploring, growing, learning, like holy hell, it's literally 2D Dark Souls. DS wasn't even the first to do something like itself. Kinda sad how off the rails it went and how Backwards it's become. A total step down in every aspect that made a game "Of All Time" to focus on a Genuine Lie that their game's are difficult. They aren't. They're Tedious. Learning DDR is Tedious. And when that's Literally All You Have Left, I'm sorry, but that's never going to be Game Of All Time, it's simply going to be forgotten as the hype continues to die down.
As we see today, I don't think DS has ever been more popular. A game from 2011. Doing better than it was before. DS2? Still flailing in "no it's good" and "no it's bad" discussions (it's bad, it's really, really bad, not even debatable, some enjoyable aspects, but we all like burnt toast sometimes) DS3? I hardly hear anything about it because it's such a soulless piece of shit. ER is dwindling, only rescued by DLC, Bloodborne continues to be Overwhelmingly overhyped and stuck to Sony devices. I'm not even going to touch Sekiro at this point, heard it's hard, guarantee it's faux difficulty and just by looking can tell gameplay took a backseat to marketability again.
Don't get me started on artistry. It's dead. Do ya like the color grey? Because boy howdy, they got you covered. Do you like primarily 3 colors at any given point? Because boy, I sure hope you like the colors Green Yellow and Red! But grey versions of them. Like, Veeeeery Grey versions of them. Ya'll know they put this filter on there so it looks standard across everyone's monitor's and stream's right? Like, they handicap their visuals, so everyone has an equally bad visual experience? Instead of...you know just having a good looking game that doesn't stream right all the time online...Maybe we can try...not putting more than half the budget in graphics? Given it's just a marketing tool, and half the total budget is equal to the marketing budget, maybe we can try NOT putting 3/4ths the budget into marketing????
I fuckin hate souls-likes because Not A One understands what the fuck made Dark Souls good! Is it so hard to understand that, in a time where Not A Single Soul had any confidence in the design of any game they played, that the One That Made People Go "Oh Shit GOAT" was the ONLY FUCKING ONE IN YEARS that gives the player CONFIDENCE AND TRUST IN THE DESIGN!?
You can't just have it be HARD AND CALL IT A DAY
YOU HAVE TO EARN THE TRUST OF THE PLAYER
YOU HAVE TO EARN THE RESPECT OF THE PLAYER
YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE PLAYER TRUST THE DESIGN
TRUST THAT THERE IS A REAL DESIGN
YOU NEED TO GIVE THEM SOMETHING
All this faux difficult shit does is tell the player, There is no design, there is only fitting string into needle holes. And any attempt to stray from that is Severely Punished.
Fuck off.
Dark Souls is a Puzzle game where the puzzle is your fear and how you can surpass it.
It is NOT pushing a fucking boulder up a god damn wall.

Hi sorry it may sound stupid but I just got an exclusive ticket to their live concert on 3rd June in Nagoya and this is my first time to visit them! (and alone lol so I'm bit nervous right now)Wondering what preparation should I do? like how early should i arrive at the venue and can I use english when i buy merchandise etc.
thank u!
Hello! It is not a stupid question at all. I don't kow if you ever went to see Dir en grey outside of Japan even, but there are definitely differences to know about.
Chronologically, if you are interested in merchandise, be prepared to dedicate almost your entire day for that. People usually line up from 8-9AM until the venue staff distributes numbers. When the merchandise table actually opens, usually around 3PM (but 2PM in the case of the June 3rd show), then you come back and you will have the priority based on your position in the morning's line. However that's IF the venue does distribute number papers. I have gone to a Zepp Nagoya show where we were forced to line up right until 3PM without ever being given numbers, which was very problematic because we weren't prepared for that and had no food, and I think it started raining at some point.
Eventually, not sure if only around 3PM or some time after noon or something else, the day's panel will be set up and you can take pictures of it. Technically, it will be there until after the show too, but it can be nice to capture it in photographs while the light/shadow contrast is not too high.
When 2PM comes around and the merchandise begins selling, unfortunately don't expect the staff to speak English. However, the table will usually have plastified sheets listing all the goods with pictures, so you can probably understand each other by pointing to what you want and gesturing how many you would like. In Japan, when ordering something, most places/people will double-check with you what your final order is before charging you. Just don't appear rude despite the language barrier, and make sure to finish with a kind "Arigatou gozaimasu" of course! If you're worried about the impression you leave, you could probably start the conversation with "Sumimasen" too.
From what I remember, they accept credit cards, not just cash.
The only thing left after that is the actual start of the show. Seeing as the June 3rd concert will take place in a venue with seats, then you literally don't have to show up before 6PM. By then, most of the fans will have already entered the venue, so you will avoid the rush. Also, Dir en grey almost never starts their shows on time, but it can be fun to be there ahead of time and get impregnated with the playlist they decided for the music playing before the concert starts. This tour's playlist has some really 'intimidating' songs. I would really recommend going early (the doors open 45 minutes before 6PM) to experience it, because it gets you in a certain mood for the show!
Unlike numbered tickets, seat-assigned concerts probably just have people enter based on first-come, first-served basis, in a disciplined line (or two). No need to rush, nobody will take your seat. By the way, try to look at the venue's seat map ahead of time to know where you are seated, in case it is a bit confusing in person. For example, I think it was the Yokosuka hall this month that had AA and BB rows in front of A, B, C, etc.
Inside the venue, keep in mind that food is usually prohibited, but you can bring (non-alcoholic?) beverages in bottles. Seeing as you will have a seat, you don't need to worry about being lightweight like in general admission venues. Any bag you bring and the exclusive goods bag that you will receive can be placed in your seat while you stand up during the show.
In the last two seated shows, for some reason the venue staff checked everyone's bag to make sure that there was no filming equipment. Not sure if something oot leaked throughout the first half of May, as they did not do that in Yokosuka. Those checks usually don't occur for general admission standing venues.
Last thing I can think of: the exclusive goods bag is usually at a table inside the venue. You can technically get yours before or after the show, as they should have enough for all exclusive or VIP ticket holders, but it might be good to get that taken care of before the show starts, to be at peace of mind and not forget. There should be a sign up somewhere mentioning the exclusive goods, but if you don't read Japanese, try to look around not too far from either the venue's or the concert room's doors for a table that has many rectangular bags lined up. Once you locate it, you will need to present the paper ticket that you were handed when you entered the venue, as the staff member will stamp the back of it. That prevents people from frauding and trying to get more than one bag per ticket.
Perhaps half of this was totally unnecessary and is obvious, but I prefered to list everything that came to my mind. Have an awesome show and let loose vocally and spatially! Nyaaagoooyaaaaaaa!

Which Link does Dink look like? I defaulted to OoT dink in the “and who’s that babe?” reblog, but is there one he specifically looks like?
I also have some thoughts I want to share about the dark Link in Zelda 2, the OG. He isn’t really a dark Link from what I can tell? He is summoned by a not evil man who wants to test Hyrule for one, and I suppose his only point for existing is to guard great powers like the triforce (as that is what Hyrule gets for defeating him), and all he does is copy everything Hyrule does.
If that version of Dark Link were in Player’s Aid, would they still fight? This has been ruminating in my head for days, I’m honestly curious on your thoughts on how he’d interact with Player beyond fighting.
I've seen a lot with the Dink that most people write/draw him looking like Time? (Which makes sense since his first debut was with Time) And I usually see fanart of younger Time.
But that's not what I have planned for Dink, seeing as he's supposed to represent the darkness of all the Links I have it planned that Dink doesn't really have a set form? Unless it's an amalgamation of them all
I'm putting all Dink's shape-shifting to good use, if the man can look like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All at once he can look like every Link at the same time or shift his body to look like each of time.
This will be addressed on the next chapter! I wanted to add to the horror element of what Dink really is, ya know?
Now for your second point!
I did a quick bit of research just so I could answer this question and have come to this!
That Shadow in Hyrule's game is not Dark Link! There's about 3 categories of shadow based enemy Links.
Shadow Links - Made from Ganon's hatred and evil thoughts manifesting in the Dark Mirror in the form of Link! A dark reflection of Link- Four's Shadow counts as this! He's not a clone, but more like a twin brother raised by Ganon to hate Link? In layman's terms at least.
Dark Link - The evil reflection of Link! He's not just another monster but actually Link himself. He's construction from Shadow magic (and thus is why he Is still called The Shadow, but the Links) I guess the best way to describe him is He's Link's evil clone.
Link's Shadow - As the name said, he's literally just Link's shadow. There's nit much on the wiki but my guess is the old man used magic to use Hyrule's own Shadow against him as the ultimate test to see if he was strong enough to have the triforce of Courage. (I mean he did defeat Ganon so I don't see why Link needed that test but okay)
I think Link's Shadow probably does later inspire the creation of Dark Link tho.
So from that, I feel like Hyrule's Shadow would probably be pretty docile with Player. Sure, they'd freak out at first until they realise that it's just Rulie's Shadow so they're safe. Pretty sure the Shadow is also a nod back to Peter Pan as Hyrule is supposed to be loosely be based on the boy? So, another guess I have is that Hyrule's Shadow could mirror Hyrule in a personality way and could be just as smitten as Hyrule is with Player?
I hope this answers your question, BB!
EDIT: You know, Pinky talks about a shadow eith Hyrule quite a bit....@luimagines I AM WATCHING YOU/j

Hi, sorry for oot. But I really need someone to share my story with, since you're my fav writer so here. I'm not homophobic, I have a boyfriend he's so good to me, kind and also warm-hearted. But last night, he comeout as gay and someone who always come to our date is his boyfriend. and he just use me to hide his real sexuality because lgbtq+ still taboo in our country. I still breakdown. Feel not worth it for anyone... It's 2:51am. And I just wake up, I was crying all day. Thank you so much bb, hope good things always come to you and everyone.
oh nooo!! anon, im sorry! i feel like, if he could hide his sexuality and his relationship from others and you then he should just continue to hide it while NOT BEING with you.
if people question why the two of them are together and so close, they could just lie.
“we’re brothers from another mother.”
“we’re best friends— what, we can’t hang out and be friends?”
although it is super hard to come out to someone.
anon, i genuinely do not know what to say because this is the internet and one wrong thing you say will trigger a shit ton of people. i like giving advices but i’m so scared to give out the wrong advices. i love you for trusting me by telling me this but i haven’t been in this situation and i haven’t experienced this at all, so i have no clue what to say and i have no say.

would whitewater end up getting dark forested for her support of mudclaw, her hypocrisy, and her neglect?
There's a VERY high chance of it. She's almost certainly damned unless someone defended her VERY well (which is unlikely)
When StarClan makes a ruling, they aren't neccesarily deciding if you are Guilty or Innocent. They're determining if you are worthy of their ranks. You have to prove you belong in Heaven, NOT that you're not bad enough for Hell.
For most warriors this is a very simple yes, and no trial is required... but if you so much as OFFEND StarClan with your bad vibes, they might damn you just for that. Whitewater has a really bad reputation for everything she's done.
The Queen’s Rights actually work "legally" on the assumption that judgement is outsourced to StarClan, because mortals (Oakstar) can't be trusted to be impartial on this specifically. The birth of kittens cannot be used as evidence of codebreaking behavior... on the mortal plane.
StarClan was ALREADY going to give her a review just based on her affair with Mudclaw. If it ended on the Great Journey like they initially planned and she invoked QR with her Ba-less litter, there wouldn't even be a trial.
But that's not how this story goes. She was a ShadowClan cat involved in Mudclaw's rebellion, because she wanted to support him.
SHE might have only done that because she wanted to avoid ThunderClan "putting their paws in another Clan's business" or some other excuse, but StarClan says
"L + Ratio + Supported your baby daddy's coup + Set the peat on fire + What were YOU doing putting your paws in another Clan's business"
StarClan didn't even accept MUDCLAW'S explaination. They didn't even accept VIXENLEAP'S excuse, just some Thistle Law-loving RiverClan warrior who joined because Hawkyfrosty asked her to. They were always going to give Whitewater a hard time for this.
Whitewater might have been able to wrack up some goodgirl points by being a very loyal ShadowClan warrior..... and she did, a little.
But she kept her head down. No spectacular feats of redemption. Just tried to live quiet. That doesn't incur a lot of favor.
And then, the part you've been waiting for... how she treated Owlkit. Theyyyy didn't like that.
If she was sooo unattached to her mate, why did his smiting BOTHER her so much, hm?
She might have won favor for doing something very noble and giving the kittens to the bereaved Torear, but she KEPT Owlkit. Any love she had that influenced that choice drained away
and she didn't do the "right thing" for him by asking for help. She just did the bare minimum at best, and hid her abuse at worst.
Unfortunately though, the neglect and emotional abuse did not earn as much ire on their own as you're hoping. StarClan is (and was) full of much worse abusers. Hillrunner, for example.
Most of StarClan's condemnation would be based around Mudclaw's Rebellion... but they've been waiting a LONG time to process the surviving non-WindClan rebels. So... she's probably doomed.
Unfortunately I cannot imagine she takes it well. She completely ignores that Owlclaw was just a footnote in her condemnation, and uses it to confirm everything she ever believed.
"That kitten WAS meant to die that night. I should have dragged that child out into the storm with the rest of its cursed siblings. I've been shoved into the spot where Owlclaw should be!"
Hmm... maybe I should axe her shortly before the Great Battle, and actually have HER be the one who attacks Owlclaw's kittens. It would be pretty horrifying if she was the one who killed Weaselkit, her own grandchild.

nothing, nothing, green rupee, nothing, green rupee, blue rupee, nothing --- oh! red rupee! nice. link smiled to himself a little at that, hoping his luck kept up as he methodically went around the room and smashed the rest of the vases. he was onto the last one, a couple dozen rupees richer, and was poised to smash it against the wall when he could feel someone’s eyes on him. he paused, vase still raised above his head as he looked up and saw a girl staring at him. he stared back, frozen.
Tumblr media
it felt like being locked in a stalemate, neither one moving, and link felt a wariness settle over him, shoulders tensed. was she going to try and stop him? it wouldn’t be the first time he’d been chased out of somewhere ... and it wouldn’t be the first time he’d get away despite it, too. if worst came to worst, he’d just have to do it again this time.
@gamenu liked for a starter!

Out of the Sun
Masterlist
Part 7 - 784 words - rated PG-13
Conversation resumed. Laughter echoed in the gradually emptying dining room. Over the next hour, several people associated with various branches of the Resistance stopped by and were introduced to the newcomer, who greeted everyone kindly and with a smile.
Karak had said that smile was sunshine. Poe Dameron seemed to notice that he was right. The commander watched Ellra from the corner of his eye the entire night, his eyes sparkling whenever she laughed or smiled.
When the conversation lulled again, Poe asked Ellra, “Basic is not your first language, is it?”
Ellra smiled and shook her head, the cloud of curls dancing.
“Kor ke. Isa bela ko.”
“You don’t say,” he replied, giving her his signature grin.
“It’s Ishta, my people’s tongue,” she said, laughing. “I thought my Basic was great. What gave it away?”
Poe smiled down at the empty cup in his hand.
“The way you say ‘Poe,’” he said.
“Poe?” she repeated.
Ellra could be heard repeating the word under her breath for a moment.
“He’s right,” said Snap. “You say the ‘oh’ sound kind of different. Say ‘flow.’”
“Flow,” said Ellra, feeling her cheeks get hot for the first time over dinner.
“Say ‘over,’” said Karé.
“Over.”
“See?” said Poe. “Say ‘Poe.’”
“Now you’re all mocking me,” Ellra deadpanned.
“They’re just curious,” said L’ulo gently.
“Yeah,” said Poe. “I’ve been around the galaxy and no one’s said my name like that. It’s interesting.”
Ellra picked up something in the commander’s tone that made the back of her neck prickle.
“We’re extremely isolated,” she explained, scratching the place that prickled. “Our pronunciation is based on an ancient language.”
“I think it’s pretty,” said Jessika, draining her last drop of tea. “Pohhh…” she mumbled to herself, trying to emulate Ellra’s accent. “Pohhhh…”
It was late. The group dispersed. Jessika, Poe, and BB-8 remained to escort Ellra to her quarters. She walked slowly between the two humans as the little droid rolled cheerfully in front of them.
Next to the command center, the barracks was the deepest part of the base, safe from ground-level attacks. Ellra’s room was in the same level as the enlisted. She had the smallest compartment in the whole base, right at the corner of a row, near the lift.
Connix had let her look around it earlier. It was just a small work station, a bunk with a bookshelf at the head for personal items, and a refresher. Near the head of the bed, built into the wall was a compact charging station for small droids and astros. Two small crates of Ellra’s personal belongings were waiting by the workstation to be unpacked.
Ellra was tired. She looked forward to slipping into her new bed and sleep. Space travel was exhausting.
“Hey, BB-8,” said Poe when they stopped outside Ellra’s door.
The little droid rolled over to Poe and beeped curiously.
“What if Ellra gets lonely on her first night here? Shouldn’t you keep her company?”
BB-8 beeped an eager confirmation and Ellra broke into a grin.
“A spy?” she said softly, daring to flick her eyes up to Poe’s before looking back at the little droid.
BB-8 beeped sweetly and she understood. He would be her confidante as much as he was Poe’s.
“Alright then,” she said, keying in the passcode Connix had showed her earlier. “Happy to have you, little friend.”
BB-8 beeped and whistled his goodnight to Poe and rolled inside. Ellra turned to her two companions and thanked them for their help and company and bid them good night. Jessika shook her hand and Poe seemed uncertain if he should shake her hand or hug her, so he settled for an awkward kiss on the back of her hand, which left Ellra giggling helplessly.
She stepped into her quarters and locked the door. Through the door behind her, she heard Jessika hiss, “You kissed her hand?”
“She thought it was sweet,” whispered Poe defensively.
“You’re pathetic,” said Jessika, unable to stifle her laughter.
BB-8 was rolling around inside the room, examining it. He whistled and booped softly to himself. Ellra couldn’t stop the smile that split her face.
“Tomorrow, I’ll plug you into my datapad and we’ll have a real conversation,” she said.
BB-8 rolled over to her and beeped cheerfully and softly.
Ellra needed to unpack, check the security feeds, shower, change, and pull down the bed. But she didn’t have energy for all that. She confirmed that the animals were safe, milling about quietly in the dark, and crashed into her bed, clothes and boots still on.
The last thing she remembered was rolling to her side to lay her arm across BB-8’s head.
“Good night, little friend,” she whispered.
Boop-bee.
