4/21/24.
When I saw that Chapter Music (Melbourne, Australia) was splitting a vinyl reissue of Guy Blackman (co-founder of Chapter Music and member of Minimum Chips), I was anticipating a good album.
I wasn't really expecting a great one. "Adult Baby" was originally released in 2007 and now is being reiussued by both Chapter Music and Pop Superette (Pierre, the label owner, is just amazing), a French label responsible for one of my favorite Bandcamp releases, Irmão Victor.
As usual, the Bandcamp write-up contains some gems I need to pass on. First, Guy Blackman is a "nerdy fan of Syd Barrett". His voice reminds me of the melancholy voices associated with Nick Drake, Belle and Sebastian, and Jens Lekman (who appears on the 3rd song!) And finally, the Bandcamp page hypothesizes how the Guy Blackman CD made it to France in the first place. The blame is laid at the feet of Maxwell Farrington - an Aussie living in France who says of Guy Blackman:
“Guy Blackman is one of Australia’s finest singer/songwriters. There are very, very few artists who can make me cry like he does. Normally I don’t give a damn about the lyrics, but with him it’s genius. After his moving (unpretentious) words come his graceful and sticky melodies and arrangements. ‘Adult Baby’ - this is a very important album for me, it’s the Mount Everest of Australian pop.”

Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard - Once - citing Sean O’Hagan, Lee Hazlewood and Scott Walker as inspirations raises certain expectations, and they fulfill them
“I listened to a song that Maxwell sent me and said to myself, ‘this guy is incredible, I must work with him’,” says Christophe Vaillant who performs as Le SuperHomard.
His latest record, a collaboration with Australian singer Maxwell Farrington, was born from an instantaneous connection the pair felt when they met during a joint concert at La Boule Noire, on the MaMA Festival in 2019. During Farrington’s sound check, he sang an a capella version of a song by Burt Bacharach. This led to an engaging conversation between the two musicians, who discussed their common passion for Sean O’Hagan, Lee Hazlewood and Scott Walker. “Well we can all agree that there’s no seduction more powerful than common taste in music,” says Farrington. “Soon after that gig Christophe asked me to write lyrics for him, which I did obligingly. From there I asked him to arrange one of my songs.”
It was clear the two had a lot in common in terms of taste but musically they soon sparked too, sending things back and forth until the sketching of an album emerged. “I sent off a few demos to Christophe down in the south of France and he just picked out whatever songs he felt were good,” says Farrington. “Christophe has a saying: There are no bad songs, only bad arrangements; and we only had good songs, so it was smooth sailing.”
The result is a seamless collaboration from two people who share a great musical intuition. Marrying Farrington’s rich baritone croon with Vaillant’s deft yet stirring compositions and you’re left with a record that feels like a lost classic. Whilst those influences they initially bonded over are clear on the record, it goes beyond being a simple ode to them. As Le SuperHomard - whose 2019 debut album received great critical praise (“A sparkling debut" 4* - Mojo ) - Vaillant exercised his clear pop chops via dreamy synth grooves and sparkling melodies. Here that craft is equally on display, albeit with a tonal shift towards more orchestral pop, with lush, sweeping strings lifting songs as equally as tender strums of guitar keep them propped up. Combined with Farrington’s endlessly infectious vocals, the pair have landed on something that owes as much to the music’s rich history as it does to contemporary sounds.

King Henry’s Funeral: Foreign Monarchs and Royals Arrive at the Abbey
It’s time to say goodbye to our beloved King in Willow Creek, and the foreign guests from around the simworld have arrived at the abbey. The first ones to arrive were TM King Maxwell and Queen Morgan of the Winden Territories followed by TM King Richard and Queen Elissa of Carrington. This is the first time both monarchs visit Willow Creek, although Queen Elissa attended the Queen Annual’s Tea Party a few years ago.
Next up were HM Queen Helena of Monaca and her son and heir HRH Crown Prince Maximilian, Duke of Rosemont followed by HM Queen Sofia of Windasia and her husband HRH Prince Consort Darien. Both the Queen Helena and Queen Sofia have been in Willow Creek before.
Arriving next were TM King David and Queen Blair De Villiers followed by HM King Arthur of Albion. Both King David and King Arthur have never visited Willow Creek before, and we are glad to have them here on this special occasion.
Next up were two of the late King’s closest friends HM Queen Alexandra of Farrington next to her husband HRH Prince Christopher and her sister and best friend to our new Queen, HRH Princess Alice, the Princess Royal.
Following the Queen of Farrington were HM Queen Alma of Simovia next to HM Queen Aisling of Culloden and her son and heir HRH Crown Prince Michael, Duke of Glencoe. Queen Alma and Queen Aislaing have already been to Willow Creek for the Queen’s Annual Tea Party as well a few years ago, and we are very pleased to have them back again to say farewell to the King.

4/3/24.
Someone of Matthew Edwards musical pedigree was bound to come across my radar at some point - I just thought it would have been long before now.
Edwards is English, but currently lives in San Francisco. But I don't think he's part of the current SF/Oakland scene. His music is a bit more produced and literate. It's satisfying my need for music like that of Maxwell Farrington/Le SuperHomard, The Divine Comedy, David Bowie, and David E. Williams.
The Futurists are Edwards' San Francisco based band. He did record a "recent" LP in his hometown of Birmingham, England with a group he called The Unfortunates. He also was in The Music Lovers who put out music on Le Grand Magistery (known to me because of Momus and Louis Philippe). He has collaborated with Fred Frith, and members from Ladybug Transistor and The Essex Green.
This two-song 7" appears to be self-released.

Für ihr zweites Album änderten Dewaere radikal die Taktik, die sie bei der Komposition ihres Debütalbums Slot Logic verfolgt hatten. Damals hatte sich die Band für ein wildes Schreiben durch kollektive…
