top five games you don’t currently have installed or don’t currently own
Borderlands 2 (owned, not installed)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (still PS3 exclusive and I lent out my copy long enough ago that I don't think I'm getting it back :( here's hoping Master Collection 1 does well enough to justify a PC port)
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (languishing in un-remastered 6th gen purgatory)
Assassin's Creed IV (a tragic casualty of the Case of the Too Small Hard Drive)
Streak Hoverboard Racing (Does anybody even remember this one except me? It definitely wouldn't hold up now, but I have fond memories of playing it oh so long ago.)

What media & content to study for my Maynard software toy(-kit?)
Ya, that's alot of content to learn from.
First Person Perspective
Quake 1 / Xonotic / Red Eclipse / Tesseract / Cube 2 Sauberbraten... (slipgates, scenario scripting interpreter on runtime and absolutely open to modding for every single system in the game thanks to the entire stack being open source)
Resistance Fall of Man (part of its color palette especially for diagetic amber retro GUI/UX, initial darker arc that goes upwards to hope later on, unravelling longer connected history secrets, excavation of historical relics to further one's end, preservation vs progress metric)
Epistle 3 (broader vibe of the series, time travel paradigm through the Borealis, gender swapping, )
Quake 4 (Tweaking the Stroggification process into some transformation that is much more handsome and way less gruesome)
Halo 2 (the alien arbiter's redemption arc + complicated alien politics)
Halo Reach / Portal 2 (far away future dynamics and sapient rebellious unrest)
Wolfenstein The New Order (dystopian aesthetic flavor & alternate history path)
Duke Nukem 3D (EDUKE32 & BUILD2 counts in that department)
Ion Fury (Female protagonist & innovation within retro contraints; Aftershock & Phantom Fury counts as well)
Cyberpunk 2077 (mechanics, quests, overall vibe of going against the systems in place despite working gigs for those same structures, generic future technological level)
Simulation
Micropolis / original Simcity (overall aesthetic and runtime asset/level editing glory)
SimCity 4 (mechanics, connectivity with other cities and other engines, moddability...)
The Sims 2 (life simulation framework, family-building, moddability, the CC community, the customizability of everything*)
FreeCiv (open source, retro Civilization game rules, world sizes and civ numbers in vast quantities, Lua scripting, in-game level editor...)
Civilization 5 Complete Edition (external SDK tools, entire game loop, world generation in high resolution hexagonal grid, a couple of custom and built-in map scripts, strategic mapmode, technological tree with 'G&K'+'BNW', community content, )
Civilization 6 (some loyalty system, climate change, diplomacy in the end-game, districts and other novel simulation aspects)
Crusader Kings 2 (dynamic agentive intrigues in real time, pausable time, historical bookmarks...)
Europa Universalis 3 (graphics, complete-ness, early modern era onwards, Protestant Reformation, enlightenment period, abundance of focus sliders, alternate history threads...)
Abstract
4D Toys / Miegakure (simple environment with composite 4D objects, manipulation of fourth dimension objects with interesting properties, playground world...)
Citizen of Rome Dynasty Ascendant (endless life simulation, accurate historical considerations, subjective goal-oriented playstyles...)
Hypnospace Outlaw (network and knowledge exploration + instigation as strong gameplay loop incentive, connection to other fictional realms, emulating much of the year 2000...)
Factorio (creativity, computer simulation, ultra deep technological mechanics, abundance of diverging workflows for similar tasks, several recipes and several ways to do things...)
'TIS-100' / 'Shenzhen I/O' (classic Zachtronics formula, custom levels, optimization metrics, fairly decent to complete but encouraging to optimize further, prices, time-sharing, limited processing power, instructions, meta/self-awareness aspect)
Baba Is You (keyword manipulation, interpreter like environment, moddability and abundance of custom levels)
The Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall (densely inhabited fictional world, complex skills and wider world design)
Mercenaries Playground of Destruction (many factions to trade and interact about, a shared baseline opponent, territorial control, vehicular combat and other props shop)
Before note-taking form gameplay sessions thread
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The aesthetic I shall use is pretty much the one I utilize on my blog most of the time, the one with retro cartoon vector layered sectors, volumetric 3D geometric elements, with as little anti-aliasing as possible, using NPR stylized N64+Dreamcast Cel-rendering, warm soft yet dark wooden colors, and other things to make for a synthesis of many eras. And I do still am figuring the level layouts to empathize most but I do have some demo suggestions like Poolrooms, forested areas, homes and other sector layouts. So to amount towards a worldly geometric terrain wrapped around on one axis to make a curved cylindric world from QGIS files into Qodot levels.
But I feel like this manifesting game is about integrating into this alternate world, interacting with the many factions that will keep varied relationships with you and building yourself up onto those byzantine politics to instigate positive, constructive, incremental changes.

What's your favourite video game?🎮
My favourite video game of all time is Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. It's essentially GTA in North Korea. You take contracts from the various factions that have invaded North Korea (the UN, South Korea, China, and the Russian Mafia) and hunt down a Deck of 52 Korean officials, generals and nuclear scientists. It's very Bush era military thriller. It's essentially a world where everything they said about Iraq was true about North Korea, General Song is a Bad Man, the intervention is UN sanctioned, and even as a mercenary you never really do anything that is particularly wrong. The use of private contractors is praised as a way of getting round UN red tape. In real life, Blackwater mercenaries were murdering civilians in Iraq and the nuclear threat justifying the invasion was nonsense. So the underlying politics of the game are pretty...complicated, but complicated in a way you can engage with.
Any building can be destroyed with a range of airstrikes, and you can take allied soldiers with you on little adventures. There's lots of little random encounters in the countryside between different factions. I always loved gathering tonnes of UN soldiers in blackhawks and dropping them off outside North Korean spawn points and seeing how long they survived, or setting up big battles between the South Korean and Chinese forces after you help spark a war between the two countries. It's like a big sandbox filled with toy soldiers.
Because the game was published by LucasArts back in the day they were also able to get some really incredible voice actors (the Chinese and South Korean faction leaders are especially good) and there's a lot of backstory and lore behind everything. It's really well rooted in actual Korean politics - the locations that the factions are based line up with real areas that those factions have influence in in real life. The little bios for each of the Deck of 53 talk about Songun, Sunshine Policies, coups, sanction evasion, reunification...the dev team did their homework and it shows! It was enough to get 12 year old me really interested in international politics and I partly owe where I am today to that game.
It also means a lot to me as, a lot of trans people find refuge in video game characters and for me Jennifer Mui was that character. She's not ultrasexualised like a lot of video game women were in 2005, she's a hypercompetent former MI6 operative (the other characters, Jacobs and Nillson, are very lackadaisical and a bit edgy which never really appealed to me) and I remember really really liking her as a character for some reason, especially as it was pretty rare at that time to find relatively rounded female characters in the games that I liked back then (military focused shooters).
The sequel I am not as keen on. It's set in Venezuela and the enemies are racist caricatures. Mui is rewritten as callous and moneygrubbing. The tone is comedic rather than serious. It's published by EA at a time when they were trying to make every franchise they owned into Bad Company. The game was rushed and is very glitchy, the AI thick as two planks. The actual politics behind all this are actually better though, it's openly critical of American imperialism and the UN are obviously only there for the oil. The big oil company is very evil and the work you do for it is evil. It just does it extremely cynically and brashly. It kind of reflects the post Bush hangover in a way. Yeah, our governments went to another country in the name of democracy and peace but we were really there to steal its resources for the benefit of evil corporations - but what else are you going to do about it other than laugh?
I have somewhere in my drafts a ~3,000 word history of the war in Korea in Mercenaries and the kind of policies the Koreans would have to have used to be such a problem for the UN, the political economy behind the factions - embarrassingly nerdy stuff. There's a small but dedicated mercenaries fan community on discord. I'd really checkout Screenslayer's Let's Play series of Mercenaries (it's ridiculously well made!) and Escargot's speed runs. I'm very tempted to stream Mercs myself, mostly as an excuse to rant about my many Thoughts about this 17 year old game (it looks fantastic on the Xbox One though). If there's an audience for that and anyone willing to tell me how to do that I might do that when I am reunited with my xbox at Christmas

🔥 FIRE - do they have any self destructive tendencies? what habits do they have that hinder them from becoming their best self?
*slaps lloyd* this idiot
Lloyd is a control freak in particular when it comes to people he loves dearly. He keeps a pretty good lid on it, but he likes to know what the plan is, what people are doing and when, where he can usually find someone.
This very much stems from being The Older Brother, which has been doubled down on because he did a lot of the managing with Linus throughout their childhood. Canonically, their birth mother is never known; she's either dead or removed from the picture. Serena, however, has lovingly picked up this unknown and created a character I love to death in our writing together. In our own little playground, their mother leaves the family after some time -- both boys are still fairly young, but old enough to where she feels as less guilty about the choice as she'll be able to. This leaves Brendan, a mercenary, to handle two kids on his own. Which, in turn, means Lloyd -- being three years older than Linus -- is put into a caregiving role when Brendan has to work.
It comes from a place of caring, but it can get fucking neurotic at times and it can be stifling.
Lloyd is also prone to severe, fast-spiraling depression! Canonically, this is seen when he's the surviving brother in game. There is an initial anger when he finds his brother dead, but...that anger shifts very, very quickly into resignation and suicidal ideation. His grief is not loud or raging or full of tears. He feels responsible -- that was his baby brother, he should have been looking out for him, no matter how much trust he has in Linus he should have known better, done more, something! Lloyd doesn't even really believe that the Lycians are responsible for Linus' death, and speaking to Nino and Legault showcase this to a sad, chilling degree.
He just wants to die. He doesn't even really want to take any of them out with him, as he previously stated, he just doesn't want to be in a world where his brother is dead and he feels like it was his fault. Justice is no longer a motivation. Even his surviving family and friends are not something he considers living for in this moment. If it weren't for the loyalty of his men, I truly think Lloyd would have faced the Lycians alone. (of course those deaths just...add to the guilt he feels, which spirals further and there's just...I don't think he would have come out of it, even if he lived)
While this doesn't crop up too often over things in his day to day life, at least to this degree, he's a chronic overthinker and he gets in his own head way too much. He puts on a good face, but decisions he's made weigh on him heavily. He is very much mentally split into two people -- or, two things, I guess, in his own view of it.
The man that is honorable and caring, and gentle; a lover of books and knowledge, and sappy poetry. And then there's the Wolf. The Wolf is ambition and pride and dark deeds, cloaked in the veneer of justice and idealistic desires. There's both a clear distinction between the two in his head, and lines that get blurred far too often. He has such a hard time settling the both in his heart and mind, and I think this stagnates him where he currently is:
He wants to do good things, be better, reclaim the feelings he used to have towards his actions and thoughts. But the reality of some of the things he did feels...counter to this, and reconciling these doubts and disconnects and regrets is keeping him from fully moving forward.
I think I've sort of lost my train of thought, but there is a lot wrong with Lloyd and despite his talk and overall desire to improve, I think he's incredibly stuck in his own head and past.

i couldn’t find a list of all the new 10th anniversary achievements anywhere outside the achievements menu so i’m making the list myself
WINGS OF LIBERTY
Liberation Day: “Quick Sign off” Destroy all 6 Dominion Holoboards in the “Liberation Day” mission in less than 3 minutes on Normal difficulty.
The Outlaws: “No Quarter” Complete “The Outlaws” mission without building additional Barracks on Normal difficulty.
Zero Hour: “A Strong Offense” Destroy 8 Zerg Hatcheries in the “Zero Hour” mission on Normal difficulty. (so basically just that one achievement from before, but doubled and on an easier difficulty)
The Evacuation: “The Great Purge” Destroy all Zerg structures in the “The Evacuation” mission on Normal difficulty. (oh this one looks fun)
Outbreak: “23 Minutes Later” Complete the “Outbreak” mission on Normal difficulty before the 4th night. (basically the same name and goal of an existing achievement which does seem a little basic but w/e)
Safe Haven: “Rip Them All Down” Kill 50 enemy units with Vikings in the “Safe Haven” mission on Normal difficulty.
Haven’s Fall: “Raid & Plunder” Destroy 50 enemy structures with Vikings in the “Haven’s Fall” mission on Normal difficulty.
Smash and Grab: “No Smash, Only Grab” Gather all 4 Protoss relics without destroying a Zerg strurcture (sic) in the “Smash and Grab” mission on Normal difficulty.
The Dig: “Thanks for the Advice” Complete “The Dig” mission without killing an enemy unit with the Laser Drill on Normal difficulty. (oh i love this one’s name)
The Moebius Factor: “Contract Saviors” Complete “The Moebius Factor” mission by training only SCVs, Medivacs, and Mercenaries on Normal difficulty.

Welcome to the Jungle: “Rocket Queen” Complete the “Welcome to the Jungle” mission in less than 14 minutes on Normal difficulty. (i know all the old achievements for this mission were Guns N Roses song names, is Rocket Queen also a Guns N Roses song? i don’t recognize it. if it isn’t that’s kinda disappointing)
Breakout: “Love the Bomb” Kill 50 total units with Nuclear Strikes in the “Breakout” mission on Normal difficulty.
Ghost of a Chance: “Many Shots, Two Kills” Kill 2 Spectres with Reapers in the “Ghost of a Chance” mission on Normal difficulty.
The Great Train Robbery: “Fewer Hands, Bigger Cut” Complete “The Great Train Robbery” mission without building an SCV on Normal difficulty.
Cutthroat: “I’ll Do It Myself” Destroy Orlan’s Mercenary Fortress in the “Cutthroat” mission before Han’s mercenaries are hired on Normal difficulty. (”cutthroat” is a pain in the ass to type holy shit. like i’m really good at typing, i type like 200 words a minute without looking even in the direction of my computer, but god DAMN cutthroat is a pain)
Engine of Destruction: “Limited Warranty” Repair less than 5000 damage on the Odin in the “Engine of Destruction” mission on Normal difficulty.
Media Blitz: “Preemptive Strike” Destroy 120 units or structures in the “Media Blitz” mission during the sneak attack on Normal difficulty. (this is like that “destroy a Factory, Barracks, and Starport” achievement for this mission except actually potentially hard this time)
Piercing the Shroud (aka the secret mission): “Count to Three, No More, No Less” Kill 40 enemy units with weapon pickups in the “Piercing the Shroud” mission on Normal difficulty.

In Utter Darkness: “Grounded and Scared” Complete the “In Utter Darkness” mission without building a unit from a Stargate on Normal difficulty. (the hardest part about this one is gonna be just playing In Utter Darkness because holy shit In Utter Darkness absolutely blows)
Gates of Hell: “Band of Brothers” Rescue Warfield in the “Gates of Hell” mission while only training SCVs, Medics, Medivacs, Hercules, Ravens, Science Vessels, and Mercenaries on Normal Difficulty. (in other words... play Gates of Hell. because that’s basically what you already do for Gates of Hell. because the real meat of your army’s the guys you rescue.)
