i thought southwest was all 737s?? why does she look so stubby???
Southwest is all 737s, yes! It's wild how quickly the 737's reputation has changed because they used to be The stubby plane.
There are four 'generations' of 737 - original (100/200), Classic (300/400/500), Next Generation (600/700/800/900), and MAX (8M/9M/7M and 10M when those enter service). The first 737 model from all the way back in the 60s, the -100, looked like This:
Tumblr media
(They only made 30 of them and they were basically all Lufthansa's, but I think NASA might still have one)
Because, you see, the 737 was intended to be strictly a short-range jet carrying small amounts of passengers and because of that it was absolutely teeny. It was actually meant to compete with planes as small as the Fokker F28, and in modern terms I'd compare it to something like an A318 or E170 (except far more limited in range). Original 737s operated routes you'd probably use props for today. They were literally made to take over on routes too small and low-capacity for the 727.
(Check out those weird stretched out nacelles - those are JT8Ds, and they're most prominently also used on the DC-9 but you can also find them on some 727s, some Caravelles, and one of my favorite obscure failed airliners, the Dassault Mercure. Get a long, little engine, they said. You can tell original 737s apart from Classics because those ones have regular(ish) engines.)
Then for some reason Boeing just kept stretching her?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
737-200 of United Airlines | 737-300 (Classic) of LOT Polish Airlines
Tumblr media Tumblr media
737-500 (Classic) of Southwest Airlines | 737-600 (Classic) of Air Algérie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
737-700 (NG) of Southwest Airlines | 737-800 (NG) of Southwest Airlines
Tumblr media
737 MAX 8 of Southwest Airlines
And now they're comparable to 757s, for some reason. I have a massive soft spot for the old stubby 737s. To me that's what a 737 is supposed to be. But the -800 was the most produced until the MAX 8, which I believe has similar numbers, so those are what people are most used to seeing if they grew up after the 727 era.
As for Southwest, they operated the 200, 300, and 500, and right now they operate the 700, 800, and MAX 8. They're planning to replace the 700s with MAX 7s, but those aren't getting built yet...so you got to see the 700, which, despite all the stretching, manages to hold onto some of the stubby glory the 800 and MAX lost. I think the Southwest livery looks extra good on her because of it 😊

what did the indoor exhibits think about the outdoor ones before they all came inside? did they even know there were other engines out there?
The indoor exhibits knew the outdoor exhibits existed, but they didn't really think about them much beyond the way one might think of the people who work at your job but on a different shift.
A thought occurs to me though that some of the older locomotives that were kept indoors might be a bit concerned for the ones outside, if they'd had any experience with being left to the elements. Aside from the Rocket replica, we've put off researching a lot of the other pieces of smaller equipment the MSI has since Pioneer doesn't need to know anything about the guys inside beyond what it would occur to him to ask for Pilot's benefit. You saw my stack of books; this is why we go back and edit the letters every time we update, so we can add in stuff we learned in the meantime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, those guys might harbor a worry for the engines outside, but there's not much to be done about it. The exhibits outside are too big to be brought indoors. These little old engines simply wouldn't conceive a way that the bigger machines could be brought inside... until they dismantle that wall and haul 999 and 727 in. Sure, they had to cut off 727's wings to get her through the door, but they put her right to her new use and both of the girls were now safely indoors.
2903 coming inside didn't seem so farfetched now, but U-505 and Pioneer's train are surely too long to bring inside. They'd take up an entire gallery to themselves! Which was true. They were building the Henry Crown Space Center by then so the indoor exhibits probably assumed they'd build annexes for Pioneer and U-505.
That they started digging instead would have been a surprising turn of events. But they did and Pioneer and his train were indeed given their own gallery. They lowered them into their new parking garage exhibit and everyone agrees he's a fine ambassador for the museum.
But Pioneer is very light, as far as trains go. The idea that they could drop something as heavy as U-505 in a hole on the same kind of pulleys they used to lower Pioneer in? Iffy proposition, the small exhibits might have thought. 2903 by this time had been moved to the IRM, but had he still been here, they might have assumed this was why he hadn't been moved inside too. This is the reason given for why he was donated and it was true at the time. U-505 is much heavier than 2903 is, but he is also (not to disparage 2903) a much more valuable exhibit. They were already saying that Pioneer's exhibit was the model for how they wanted to treat U-505. So they sent 2903 off to his new home and began planning yet another logistically complicated move for U-505.
It did take ten more years for them to get U-505 underground as well, but they did it. And that was truly a feat! It just goes to show how great their museum really is. Like, there's not a standard operating procedure for lowering a U-boat into a subterranean exhibit. The MSI not only presents science and industry as it happens, they make their own.
The exhibits themselves may not necessarily appreciate it on that level, but they do recognize the dedication of their museum to their care and maintenance that everyone was eventually brought in, even the most unwieldy of them and even if they had to send them to a new home to ensure they'd no longer be getting rained and snowed on.

Red Dwarfcember: Santa
@red-dwarfer thought it would be fun to write some Christmasy Red Dwarf fics, so I'll be posting a few I wrote based on her prompts.
Prompt: Santa
Words: 727
Summary: Rimmer explains Io's version of the Santa legend.
Rating: T
A03 link or keep reading below.
“Oi,” Lister calls down to Rimmer. “When you were growing up on Io, did you learn about Santa Claus?”
“What the smeg are you on about now, Listy?” Rimmer says, turning a page in Fascist Dictator Monthly. Lister never can stay quiet when he is trying to read. It would be obnoxious if he didn’t expect it by now.
Lister’s locs and then his upside-down face appear, followed by one hand holding a girly magazine, folded open to reveal a smiling, scantily-clad model in a provocative outfit that vaguely resembling a Santa suit. Lister’s other hand drops out of the bunk to point at it.
“Santa,” he emphasizes. “What’d they teach about ‘im on Io? I mean, it was one thing hearing that he traveled all around Earth in one night, but that couldn’t hold much weight up in the space colonies.”
Lister loses his grip on the glossy pages and the magazine plops onto the metal floor. He shrugs and turns his attention back to Rimmer.
“So, did you hear Santa stories on Io, or not?”
Rimmer gives up on reading his own magazine, and drops it into his lap. He watches as Lister tumbles down from his bunk and settles into a seat at the table, swiping his fallen mag up from the floor.
“Don’t be a gormless git, Lister. Humans took everything they could get up into space with them, including the legend of Saint Nicholas.”
“But how did that work?” Lister asks, “if he was meant to live on Earth?”
“Well, obviously he wasn’t on Earth in our stories,” Rimmer states as if it should be obvious. “He had a base on the ice moon Europa. Humans couldn’t live there, because of the radiation, but jolly ole Saint Nick used his magic to put up protective domes for himself, Mrs. Claus, and the elves.”
“He wha’?” Lister snickers. “And kids believed that?”
Rimmer crosses his arms over his chest and glares at Lister. “How is it any more ridiculous than a man living with elves at the North Pole?” he demands. “If you ask me, the Io Santa is far superior – a Santa for the modern era!”
“All right, all right, no need to get tetchy,” Lister says, putting his fingerless gloved-hands up in mock surrender. “So how’d your Santa get around then?”
“Well, obviously he had a rocket ship that was crewed by reindeer-human GELF hybrids. How else would he travel?” Rimmer retorts, as if that should be obvious.
“And I suppose GELFs made the toys as well?”
“Well, why shouldn’t they? They were made to do what humans want, weren’t they?”
Lister chuckles. “Man, what a smegging story. Did you ever believe it?”
Rimmers stiffens defensively, and deflects rather than answer. “I don’t know what you’re acting so smug about. At least Io’s Santa was based on scientific facts! GELFs and starships actually exist! Earth’s Santa is just a bunch of nonsense and fairy dust. There’s no such thing as elves and a sleigh is one of the most out-moded methods of transport there is! Utter tot,” he concludes dismissively.
Lister laughs, tossing the magazine in the air and letting it fall on the table, where it flops into the remains of his evening curry. “Well, yeah, that’s why only kids believe in it. So, did ya?”
“Did you?” Rimmer returns.
With a shrug and a shake of his head, Lister replies, “Nah. Growing up in an orphanage, they don’t really bother with all that. And by the time I was adopted, I was past being fooled about it.”
“Ah,” Rimmer vocalizes. “Well, that’s probably for the best.”
“Why do you say tha’?”
Rimmer scowls. “At least you didn’t have to watch, year after year, as Santa left your brothers gifts, while you got a lump of coal, only to find out that it was your own mother doing it all along.”
Lister expression softens. “Sorry, man. I wouldn’t’ve brought it up if I’d known…”
“Yes, well, I’m sure she was just pushing me so that I could achieve greatness,” Rimmer says, almost to himself, as he looks down at a black-and-white image of Mussolini.
“I think you’re great,” Lister declares.
Rimmer looks up at him, hazel eyes wide before narrowing in disbelief. “Do you?”
“A great big smeghead,” Lister concludes with a cheeky grin.
To both their surprise: Rimmer laughs.

Black cats, costumes, candy. From the time you were little, Halloween had been your favorite holiday. Your family had always had the tradition of handing out candy and this was something you were excited to continue at Graceland following you and Elvis getting married.
The night began with you adjusting your witch's hat while sitting patiently on the couch, a bowl of candy already in hand. Elvis, adorned in the Dracula costume you so sweetly convinced him to wear, made his way downstairs. You clasped your hands together and giggled as he sarcastically modeled his costume in the living room.  Dramatic as always, he finished his performance with a swish of his cape before falling face first onto the soft couch beside you. Your giggles grew into a fit of laughter as he rolled over and pulled you back against his chest.
"You know, you really do put a spell on me, woman." He said toying with the strap of your black dress before planting a kiss on your cheek. His affection prompted you to lean further into him, yet just as he leaned in to capture your lips the doorbell rang, announcing the arrival of the first trick-or-treater of the night. Jolting at the sound you pushed Elvis away hurriedly. Just as you turned away he captured your hand in his, lacing his fingers in yours and allowing you to lead him to the door. Checking your hat once more in the mirror, Elvis couldn't help but grin at the almost childlike joy on your face as you pulled the door open.
You were immediately greeted by a couple and their two children dressed as ghosts. Greeting the family, you smiled as the father while Elvisstood awkwardly behind you, avoiding eye contact with the visibly excited mother.
"Ok. You guys remember what to say?" The father prompted while pushing the boys up the steps.
"Trick or Treat!" The two young boys shouted in unison. Thrusting their pillowcases forward in search of the day's sweet treasure. Smiling brightly at them you knelt down level with the boys and placed a handful of candy into each sack.
"Well aren't you two the cutest little ghosts I've ever seen!" You cooed, earning a chuckle from their parents and a relieved sigh from Elvis as the mother looked away. Just as you were beginning to discuss Casper the Friendly Ghost with the boys, a long line of trick-or-treaters began making their way up the driveway.
The night continued on like this. You handing out countless bowls of candy to the children of Memphis while Elvis hid just inside the door, staring at you lovingly while avoiding the glances he earned from the mothers who just so happened to be his fans.
-
Passing the last handfuls to a pair of twins dressed as Barbie and Scooby doo, you waved goodbye as they made their way down the driveway. Once they were out of sight you pushed the door closed and flicked off the outside lights. Turning to Elvis, you beamed at him while proudly displaying your once again empty bowl.
"Wasn't that amazing? I mean, growing up we got lots of kids knocking at our door but nothing like that!" You enthused. This earned a low chuckle and a headshake from him. Taking the bowl from your hands, he gently set it on the entryway table before guiding your arms around his neck. He placed a soft yet hungry kiss on your lips before backing you into the door.
"Just think," he said, leaning in even closer to run his faux fangs across the exposed skin of your shoulder. "Let me take this pretty little costume off you and this time next year we could be out there trick or treating with a lil' one of our own...". You hummed lovingly in response, closing your eyes and prompting his hand to trail lower. He trailed kisses down your neck as his fingers ghosted over your panties. Head swimming with his words and this newfound contact, you let out a gasp. Eyes opening wide, you pushed Elvis back as he brought his gaze down to look at you.
"Does that mean we can wear matching costumes?!".

what's 999's favorite activity in her current location at msi
i imagine she loves watching the model railway
She likes the model railway well enough! Especially fun is when they break out the unusual models that don't get a lot of play. Apparently, there's a model Zephyr that doesn't run very well but which they will take out for special occasions! As with real engines, 999 prides herself on knowing things about the models and the engines they're based on and will happily answer any questions about them (usually with an anecdote that circles back to fairs she's been to or engines she's met before lol).
She's great one-on-one and enjoys being able to enhance the guest experience with stories about her past and directing them to other exhibits they might be interested in. Like Pioneer, she's something of an interactive signpost, since she sits right in the middle of the action and makes it her business to know what's going on at the museum. She makes it a point to recommend the 727 exhibit to everyone- "Since it's so close! The view of the hall from the second floor is spectacular!" Really, she just wants to make sure everyone gets the chance to appreciate her bestie.
She's also close enough to hear the Rocket replica's corny jokes he's always telling. Which she claims not to enjoy, but everyone else knows better.

Part #2: About Boeing
Boeing was founded in 1916 as Aero Products Company in Seattle, Washington. In 1917 it was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. Boeing built a reputation over the years for being a leader in safety and building quality aircraft. As their reputation grew, so did their market share. Boeing’s planes became a favorite of pilots to fly — they handled well, and they were designed in a way that they were easy to fly. Boeing’s mission statement as I could discern is “Lead on safety, quality, integrity and sustainability” and their vision is “Start with engineering excellence”.
Boeing had a proud culture of being engineer-driven. The engineers who were designing and building the planes had a lot of sway in the company. The direction the company took, the types of aircraft developed, everything was focused around engineers and engineering. They created commercial jets, military jets, military helicopters, and spacecraft. Boeing was the driving force behind the United States becoming a leader in the sky and in space.
Boeing is contracted to design and build seaplanes for the US Navy for WWI, the Model C. They order 50 of them for the war effort. Boeing is also contracted to build the MB-1 bomber. Over the next few years, Boeing receives contracts to build various military planes, while continuing to build their civilian seaplanes. Boeing’s planes are either drafted for military use during WWII from their commercial uses, or they are contracted to build military-specific planes — like the B-29 Superfortress bomber. This is the model that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The B-29 Bockscar dropped the bomb on Nagasaki.
Tumblr media
In June of 1946, Boeing begins designing the B-52, one of the most notable bombers in their history. Having flown in multiple wars, as well as being one of the primary planes designed to carry nuclear weapons in the event of a global thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union. It is first completed in November of 1951.
Boeing started making commercial passenger jets in 1955 with the release of the 707 twin-jet, first delivered to Pan Am in 1958. The 707 was the first plane that was ordered by the Air Force specifically for use for the President and other high-ranking officials. The 707 was the first jet to be called “Air Force One”.
Tumblr media
The Saturn V rocket is the only launch vehicle ever to have brought humans beyond low-earth orbit. This is the rocket that brought Neil Armstrong and all the other Apollo missions to the Moon. The Saturn V holds the record for the heaviest payload launched into space. The Saturn V was designed by Boeing. Even the Lunar Rover was designed by Boeing.
Tumblr media
In 1967, the 737 was released. Nearly all airlines in the US were flying Boeing aircraft. Southwest is notable for exclusively flying the 737 — their entire fleet is solely Boeing 737 aircraft. From their inception in 1967, they have (with two exceptions) only ever flown the 737 family of jets. The exception was briefly flying 727 jets for short periods. In 2021, Southwest had a total order of 234 737 Max jets which was the largest single purchaser of the 737 Max.
“The Queen of the Skies” — The Boeing 747. This plane made it possible for normal people to travel by plane, and brought about the “Jet Age”. The 747 was the first jumbo-jet, it had 4 engines, it could make it across the ocean with ease, and it could hold an immense amount of passengers. The 747 was the first twin-aisle aircraft, making ingress and egress much easier than a single-aisle aircraft. The 747 is one of the safest airplanes when adjusted for seat count. A modified version of the 747 serves as Air Force 1 — the president’s plane. The 747 is also notable for carrying the Space Shuttle as the Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.
Tumblr media
Boeing’s culture underwent a major shift in 1996. It merged with McDonnell Douglas — who was at the time another major manufacturer of aircraft. The more business-first-focused McDonnell Douglas President and CEO became the President and CEO of the newly merged company. One change that was brought about was moving the headquarters from Seattle (which was near the engineers) to Chicago. The goal of this was to create physical distance from those who may object to changes made by the executives. The new mandate was to design and build the planes more cheaply, get higher profit margins, and increase the share price. Everything else came second.
This was around the time that Airbus was gaining market share, and in some cases, selling better than Boeing. In 1990, Boeing had 80% of the passenger commercial jet market, and Airbus had less than 20%. 5 years later, Boeing had 50%, with Airbus taking 30%, and by 2003, Airbus had 52% of the commercial jet market. The loss of the market leadership drove even higher a push to reduce costs, and increase the speed at which planes are developed and built. This loss spurred the development of the 737 Max, and with the newly required speed and focus on profits, the problems that ensued.

Boeing 727-21, serial number 19260, VP-BAP on departure out of SXM. The Boeing 727 is an American narrow-body airliner that was developed and produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. After the heavy 707 quad-jet was introduced in 1958, Boeing addressed the demand for shorter flight lengths from smaller airports. On December 5, 1960, the 727 was launched with 40 orders each from United Airlines and Eastern Air Lines. The first 727-100 rolled out November 27, 1962, first flew on February 9, 1963, and entered service with Eastern on February 1, 1964. The only trijet aircraft to be produced by Boeing, the 727 is powered by Pratt & Whitney JT8D low-bypass turbofans below a T-tail, one on each side of the rear fuselage and a center one fed through an S-duct. It shares its six-abreast upper fuselage cross-section and cockpit with the 707. The 133 ft (40.5 m) long 727-100 typically carries 106 passengers in two classes over 2,250 nmi (4,170 km), or 129 in a single class. Launched in 1965, the stretched 727-200 flew in July 1967 and entered service with Northeast Airlines that December. The 20 ft (6.1 m) longer variant typically carries 134 passengers in two classes over 2,550 nmi (4,720 km), or 155 in a single class. Besides the airliner accommodation, a freighter and a Quick Change convertible version were offered. 🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬🛫🛬 🛩️Aircraft Manufacturer: @boeing. 🛩️Aircraft Model: B727-21. 🛩️Aircraft Registration: VP-BAP. 🛩️FBO: @signaturefbo. 🛩️Route: TNCM - KVNY. 📍Location: Princess Juliana Int’l Airport, St. Maarten. 📆Date: 3/21/2023. 📸 Photo Captured by: Franklyn Wilson | @beeksphotos . 🛫 🛬 www.linktr.ee/beeksphotos 🛫 🛬 #tncm #sxm #instagramaviation #ilivewhereyouvacation #instagood #teamaviation #aviationlovers #corporatejets #businessjets #bizjets #aviationphotographyphotos #sintmaartenphotographer #sxmphotographer #planespotting #privatejets #passionpassport #privatejetillustrated #mahobeachexperience #malibuconsultingcorp, #boeing #b727 #pjp #fyp #vpbap #3212023 #beeksphotos #swipeleft (at Princess Juliana International Airport Sint Maarten) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqFustJucqB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Chapter 727
Through the glass wall surrounding the model sword… Cale had seen it.
Cale had seen Jung Yi-Rang looking at him.
He saw Jung Yi-Rang lick his lips with a slimy smile on his face.
He truly seemed like a crazy bastard.
The typical energetic high schooler with glasses had instantly turned into a lunatic.
‘…That looks a bit vicious.’
At that moment…
“Keke.”
He heard a stereotypical villain’s laughter from next to him. He turned his head to see that Choi Jung Gun was doing his best to hold back his laughter.
Cale couldn’t help but speak after seeing that.
“It’s him, isn’t it?”
“Yeah.”
“Are you happy?”
“Of course I am happy. The prey has rolled in front of me with his own two feet.”
‘Wow. This guy…’
– Cale, both of them are weird.
Both of them were crazy bastards as the Super Rock mentioned.

Barrel rolling a 707 by Willard Womack Via Flickr: A view from the Boeing 707 that Tex Johnston's barrel-rolled over Lake Washington on Aug. 7, 1955. The photo was taken by his co-pilot, James R. Gannett. This was Boeing model 367-80, the Boeing 707 prototype, and was was always known as, "Dash-80", Once, during my airlines days flying 727s, I had two test pilots from Boeing riding in the cockpit. I mentioned the famous barrel roll by Tex Johnston and one said, oh yes he did that. Then added, probably every 727 had been barrel rolled
