The Feds, in quite possibly the most glacial reaction to the basic mendacity of modern ‘startup’ culture ever, are throwing the book at former MoviePass execs for making material lies about the (in)ability of MoviePass to generate profits via non-subscription means.
I don’t super care about the direct effects of this case because MoviePass/HMNY has always been a petty insurgent, but the charges levied, intentionally or otherwise, lay the groundwork for going after all the disgraced sovereigns of the ailing Concert of Palo Alto that have ruled Silicon Valley for ~15 years.
Being kinda blunt, a culture of rewarding high-class hucksters is what defined the venture capital driven tech boom. It’s to the point that empirical findings show that solid business fundamentals are anti-correlated with VC investment. The dance has always been to offer a useful and/or appealing service below cost, minimize all investment in labour and durable capital, parasitically embed your service into society, and then use your new-found position as an entrenched actor to get away any slap-dash monetization model under the sun even if it involves heavily service degradation. If you’re particularly ambitious, you can push this out by promising mega returns once a mystical, impossibly-longshot technology is developed.
Growth is easy. Just give shit away or use any number of dark patterns to addict people to your platform. Sustainable growth is hard. Providing real social utility at cost is damn near impossible. Hence, every startup starts imploding when investors who were late to the party start asking when revenue will become more than just a nice-to-have.
Even given the fetid logic of capitalism, Uber, WeWork, et al. have been obviously scam businesses. The fundamentals were never there, and in some cases the business models were transparently illegal. Hopefully, we get at least token enforcement of realistic business practices now.

Sarasota Film Festival 2024 - Top 10 Movies to Watch
As something of a homecoming for this critic, I will be attending the opening weekend of the Sarasota Film Festival this year. I grew up in the city and know what it means for the town and community. It also is a fantastic place to launch a young filmmaker. Friends of mine have not only participated in the festival but have also started Hollywood careers here. This festival holds a special place…

I took this photo last night after watching Lord of the Rings the extended directors cut in theatre. They had one movie at 6 Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. Thankfully I have moviepass so the whole thing was $20 for the month. Otherwise I think it's like $13 a ticket?
So last night at 1015 I sent this photo to my brother who watched the first two with me but couldn't for work purposes watch the third. Just a little brag of neener neener I saw it and you didn't. He responds with "I saw last night, crazy right?" which confused me until I took a second glance at the photo I took.

How to Blow Up a Pipeline: Incredibly well directed film - so tight. But, whenever we flashback to the past, something lags - perhaps because those parts rely most on the acting, and the acting is lackluster. Ingenious script, but the dialogue could have used another pass. I liked it.

Filmrecensie: Call Jane
