For Black History Month, here's a recording of jazz legend William Parker reading an excerpt from his 1995 self-published story/tone poem, Music and the Shadow People, with backing music produced by Andrew O'Connor. Transcription below the cut – the book is long out of print and copies are extremely rare, so paragraph/line breaks (and any mistakes!) are mine.

Chapter 3: Intuitive Tomorrow

One tent of a three-ring circus remains standing

All the horses have run away

The ringmasters were strangled by their own hands

The countryside smells of a battle

That has taken place long before

A brown, light-footed charger

Leads the weary soldiers

Into the maple forest

They wear dirty grey uniforms

Trudging along like sharks

They smell blood

Their faces are masked with red anger

Still other faces overflow with despair

The trees seem to get stronger

You can almost feel yourself

Going up to the top of one

To kiss God on the forehead

This is the setting outside

Inside

This is a living spirit world

The place where babies live

Before they are born

It is the place they return to

After life

The language spoken here

Is a cosmic sound language

A word is a sound

A sound is a vision

The centre of the universe is the periphery

Sometimes for a half a second

We see a blur that contains all the stories

If we look inside while producing

Sound vibrations

We see the horizon

There are thousands upon thousands of orchestras

in the tone world

There is an orchestra of raindrops

And one made of snowflakes

There is an orchestra made of all kinds of light

There are tunnels that lead to the colour world

And the trance world

With continuous sound

And continuous silence

Existing at the same time

There is an orchestra of dolphins and whales

There really are no names

No categories

It is about the one big shape

And the trillion little shapes

That make up the shapeless

timeless space

The naked eye cannot see

The melody or harmony that is present

It constantly speaks about

The intuitive tomorrow

There is a huge silver disc in the sky

It is a message from the father

of sound

It is about vibration

The sky is a burnt blue wall

A curtain of water erupts

To the left of the disc is a fire-red

Planet, a rope ladder

Dangles from the moon

Stars fill the galaxy

A bridge of shells holds

Three hundred prophets

Riding on goats

They dismount and walk towards the sun

Their footprints turn into clouds

Someone is knocking on the yellow birth-door

The doorman who is both male

And female opens the door

A bluish-purple flame

Spirals and laces

The embryo still in the womb

Now droplets of stone

Pour from the opening

At the top of the world

The story is in the strong music

The thunder-drummers produce

I am a wholewheat dumpling

Sauteed in blood

The angel says it is time to go

Blue-white flames line the birth passage

I see no colour

I feel nothing

Grains of sand turn into ants

Why do I leave my eternity

To be with you?

A bolt of lightning

Stretches across the vast darkness

The sun resounds

Like a huge gong

The wind whistles through the holes

In the sky

Trees are strung with sinew

The earth is a soundbox

Of six million birds

Singing six million tones

Simultaneously

Spirit tones float in lava

Ice castles melt

Forming huge lakes

The seeds of oceans

Water tones begin to sing

The thunder-drummers take

Two steps forward

And spin

The earth opens up

And swallows the sound

Tear tones slide down

The bamboo stick

Silver peacocks

Place their hands

On the unwashed altars

In the rice fields

Bell tones of sound

The house of the creator is the body

The altar is the heart

It is also the creator's drum

The rhythm is a lifeforce

The vibration of temples

The green mountain

The worm digging in soil

Children collapse in the bushes

They use leaves as pillows

The pillows turn into light

Then to eternal happiness

Then to stars

Oak and maple harps are plucked

The long breath is held

The tail of the dragon is caught

In the lid of the upper lip

Stone fingers flap

Like skin

Peeled

And placed over gourds

Branches tremble from the corner of the eye

Shadows sparkle

In the golden wetness of visual

touchable dream zones

Every lie that has been told

Since creation

Is written in huge letters

Over the black-purple horizon

The drone begins

Thick rosin dust

Over a field of dandelions

Singular tones bounce

Over low ocean waves

The same song

God is the master of masters

The composer of life

And all that elevates

The instrument is all creation

The creator

Is the improvisor and the player

The spirit that causes all things to dance

Human beings create

Only through the grace

Of the creator

Sound exists

As a force of nature

That leads us

Back to the creator

The intuitive tomorrow

Does not last

It is not about that

It is about the signs that inform

It is about the senses that do not touch

It is about unearthly realities

That science does not understand

Nor chooses to accept

It is about the death of death

And the life of life

The taking away of fear

It is about filling souls with compassion

To sweep one's entire being

With hope

And belief in truth

Leaving this vessel

When we meditate

On peace

Finding the lost children

Who seek passage

On this ship, the ark,

The psalm, the last sunset

One day

The sun will be late setting

the symbolism of revolutionary girl utena is key to understanding what it’s even trying to say narratively and thematically. if you remove the symbolism, if you remove the ways in which the narrative obfuscates itself and abstracts what it’s saying, then what it is saying changes dramatically. if rgu was like ‘yeah lol and did you guys know that incest is bad’ or ‘maybe gay people are good’ or ‘hey did you know that csa victims are Real and Alive and Have Interiority’— like those are all paraphrases of things that it says, but the way that it chooses to say them is so powerful and conveys so much nuance and complexity that those simplistic statements don’t. it provides an incredibly meaningful commentary on the way that systemic violence and abuse are covered up, codified, made part of our culture that supposedly resents those things. it’s examination of incest, the incest taboo and how that impacts incest victims— it’s all so incredibly considered and layered because the show chooses to convey what it’s saying through symbolism, through its metatheatrical framing, through allegory. it retains the reality of these issues; it shows them to us only when we’ve already bought into the system’s lies to make a point about how that operates, how that works to make us all complicit in that violence. nanami. nanami.

dont even get me started on how the movie uses its symbolism to demonstrate how the abuse anthy and touga experienced is simultaneously built into the world and culture they exist in, and always obfuscated and abstracted for the sake of their abusers (also specifically the way that it engenders shame and prevents people from seeking help. rgu is so damn good at understanding how and why people don’t ‘do what they should’ in abusive situations: the systems in place don’t fucking work bc they are an extension of the system built upon that abuse). anthy is the model in all the paintings, the symbol of so many undesirable things, the canvas on which they are painted. her likeness is used as an approximation for all of these awful things, many of which are a part of her in a way, but such that her interiority, her feelings, are never regarded, never seen, never understood. she’s the model. akio is never explicitly named as her painter.

sonadow songs

a thing i’ve been thinking about recently is sonic songs that specifically resemble sonadow

now bare with me because i swear i have a point

the songs i think fit most are both adventure 2 songs, one of which is obvious and the other not at all as it’s a pretty underrated song!!

the obvious one is live and learn! the lyrics just scream sonic, and specifically him being the pov singing to shadow

sonic beats shadow around twice in the game, same for shadow beating sonic depending on if you play hero story or dark story — that second line to me is practically just sonic saying that. life is complicated, ‘tangling you up inside’. one moment the guys on the floor and the next hes towering above him, it goes both ways. right after that we have:

knowing roughly about the pain he’s dealt with and all he’s paid for, even if undeserved. however by following that grief and negative expectation from others he’s practically pulling himself further down, ‘putting him right back where he came’

then it hits with the live and learn which is obviously just the. you know. final kick. however the bridge sort of just beats you when you’re down because johnny what the fuck is this

this is just painful (in a sweet way). to me it’s sonic giving shadow that final hope. the entire rest of the song is pretty aggressive, kind of just yelling to live and learn and get over things but the bridge is such a gentle reminder of why he should do it in the first place. ‘hold on to what if’ aka the what if that shadow will move on from the ark and learn to live. that place sonic is referring to the line before is peace and home.

and then live and learn and shadow fucking dies lmao

but i mentioned two songs!! and that’s because the other song is shadows perspective which is somehow more miserable

this song is none other than supporting me for the biolizard, one of my probably top five sonic songs if not number one. i love it so much it’s so perfect

this song is pretty over looked. you hear it in the biolizard fight but you don’t really listen to the vocals. hell when i first played i didn’t even hear the vocals because i was too busy trying not to fall down the streams and slam my laptop in

the song, unlike live and learn, starts out gentle and soft, and only after the guitar picks up does the first line drop:

after all, it’s what shadow assumes is the final fight. it’s what he thinks is the last thing he needs to do to destroy the threat, hence the desperation.

the verse eventually comes, which could not start harder somehow

now, important. this song could be viewed as a song about maria and his final words to her before he moves on (which you’ll understand when i bring up the next lyrics) and that’s a perfectly good interpretation of it, and probably the intended one.

HOWEVER, it can still be interpreted as a song to sonic, and there will be more on that soon.

anyway, these lyrics are just so good and well sung. the line “i believe in my future, farewell to the shadow” is him accepting the idea of moving on once defeating the biolizard, and believing in what’s next to come via abandoning his past with the destruction of the ark.

‘it was my place to live, but now i need your hand’ the sibling/maria interpretation would be the fact maria died in what shadow thought was his place, and now he needs her support in?? i can’t exactly figure out the last line and it’s tie to maria— WHICH IS WHERE THE JOINT SONADOW INTERPRETATION COMES IN! it was his place to live, it’s his realisation and moving on of his grudges and self + outward hatred. he needs sonics help, and the thing that makes this more fucking painful is the fact it’s a FORESHADOWING OF THE SUPER TRANSFORMATION WHERE THEY REACH THEIR HANDS OUT TO THE SKY TOGETHER.

SHADOW TAKES HIS HAND METAPHORICALLY AT THE FIRST BIOLIZARD FIGHT AND LITERALLY AT THE SUPER TRANSFORMATION.

‘lead me out with your light’ and the line below it to me is what slowly underlines the tie to sonic. he spoke to amy shortly before this fight, and then went straight to sonic, being led out by his guidance to help save the world, the light that he was trying to destroy.

and then the fucking HOLY SHIT THIS PART

this is a straight follow up from the last line before. everything currently IS like an illusion to him, so much is changing and he can barely comprehend its reality.

‘i’ll be losing you before long’ WHICH PLAYS RIGHT AFTER THE LIVE AND LEARN RIFF???? it’s a strong foreshadowing of his death, and the person he’ll be losing is sonic!!! before long!!! it can also be mixed with maria. he’s losing both him and maria by destroying his home and what’s remnant of its present.

the last lines here are what really made me believe this was more towards sonic lmao. ‘i know you are supporting me’ as sonic is currently doing his part in the fight whilst shadow is facing the biolizard. he knows he’s supporting his decision to join his side, and to realise what the right path is.

anyway that’s about it uh shadria and other weirdos dni also go listen to supporting me

Memories summary : The 2k12 turtles accidentally entered the rise dimension when they were 12. After a while of taking care of them, they had to leave after their gateway begins to close off. But nine years later, after the events of both series, a freak accident brings them back. With the groups quickly getting reattached, they help each other with new enemies, past trauma, and getting better with their feelings.

Disarmed summary : Joke Summary: Future Rise Leo fucking dies and somehow wakes up in another dimension and promptly adopts all the turtles emotionally since none of them are legal. Actual Summary: Future Rise Leo gets sent to the beginning of 2012 Tmnt and gets immediately noticed by the 2012 turtles, hi-jinx ensue as Rise Leo tries to figure out emotions and all that shit.

i do think it is a crime that i dont have any video editing skills because sometimes i hear a song and i see an amv that could make us cry so clearly in my minds eye…
