jay makes me insane (affectionate) because like - he just wants to be loved and belong. that's at the core of it all. that's what's going on with this guy. and he just so happens to be so insecure and neurotic about it that it manages to RUIN the things he's built for himself!!! Look at the fuckign love triangle plot!!!! he's insecure in his relationship and tries to forcibly wrangle the people around him into a Very Specific status quo that reassures him - Nya as his girlfriend who'll love him forever and ever and Cole as his loyal best friend who will also never leave or hurt him because he's so so scared to end up alone!!!! and it doesn't fucking work because he's so in his head about it that he completely misses reality!!!!! he's so wrapped up in how he feels and how his loved ones make him feel that he just fuckign forgets that they have some opinions about this too!!!! of course they're gonna get pissed off at him!!!! and then he realized that it's gotten worse, PANICS, and fucking doubles down!!!!!! the cycle continues!!!!
my head is in my hands. JAY.

Not to be the over analyzing Cole fan… but am I the only one both surprised and delighted by this shot?
Cole is in the front and center, running, and he looks SO cool! I am rotting for him and everything he does!
Now, I need to admit this is weird. Cole is rarely put in front and center for shots, he is usually in the back, SPECIALLY in running shots, that’s why I have the head cannon that due to his weight/muscle he is not that fast (When compared to the other Ninja) And the show seems to follow this. To be honest I am having a hard time thinking of a running shot when he is front and center that doesn’t belong to Master of The Mountain. Because in there it doesn't matter whether or not he is the fastest, he was the focus character, therefore the focus of the shot goes to him.
And THAT'S what has me so intrigued. Master of the Mountain was Cole’s focus season, his moment to shine, it made sense when he was leading the Upply for him to be front and center... But Now? I am surprised it isn't Nya.
Okey, ignore for a second, the fact that Cole was one of the main 4, ignore the fact that he was the original leader of the team. Dragons risings is a soft reboot. Meaning that while all the other seasons are still relevant, A soft reboot is written in a way someone that has not watched the previous seasons can still jump in and follow along. That's why we have Arin and Sora, new characters that allow the writers to re-explain old concepts without it looking like the characters we grew up with are being idiots.
With this in mind I have to ask... Why is Cole front and center? (And I repeat, he is my absolutely favorite character here) but from the soft reboot perspective... isn't Cole a new character? isn't Cole someone new to the team and therefore new to the plot and narrative? In relationship to the plot and narrative of the soft reboot, Sora is the character we have spent more time with, yet it doesn't make sense for her to be front and center. Sora has not expressed desire to be the leader, and doesn't have the push to lead a team (at least not rn, when we only have her development up to half s1, and the trailer for part 2). Nya on the other hand, she is a character that through Sora's eyes -our POV character in essence- has some sort of authority, we have been with her for longer too. Nya is someone Sora can look up to, learn from, and follow... So it would make sense to have Nya in the front and center... Yet she is not even next Cole.
Notice how not only are both Sora and Nya parallels at the back, not front, they are also blurry... In fact, Cole is the ONLY character in this shot who is not blurry. In addition to being front and center, the animators blur the other characters as Cole runs closer to the camera. Hell, even in the composition, you could draw a clear triangle with the other characters, and Cole is a the peak. He is the focal point, and this ensures the viewer is looking at Cole, but more importantly HIS expression.
His is the only expression that is 1) clear to see, and 2) not showing fear. He is angry, focused... determined.
This bring the actual question of the post... Why use these visual framing devices this way if not to give Narrative focus to Cole?
Could this episode focus on Cole? could we maybe see how he found the formling and the serpentine? notice too how they are next to Cole, and in front of Nya and Sora -aka closer to Cole (Maybe both figurative and literally)-... Could this episode touch on his new team, perhaps show him leading? Because I can't think of another narrative reason as to why they would put so much visual focus of a running scene on Cole.
And you could say "Duh, the episode is of when they find Cole, of curse they are going to focus on him" and You'll be correct, but also you are not getting my point. What I am saying is that, if this level of focus is anything to go by, Cole fans are going to eat, this episode is going to be a meal. Cole is about to kick some mech's ass so bad that bitch is going to go back to the mechanic crying and we as viewers are going to have front row seats to the whole thing.
Cole might be having a focus episode where his leadership skills are shown, where he is being fatherly, where he is showing himself as the responsible rock of the team. THIS is not any focus episode, this is a five start restaurant meal. A buffet.
Anyways... I am trying to keep my hopes low, but I needed to put this out there real quick.

I like how the original four ninja have consistent weapons that they go for:
Kai always has some sort of sword or blade
Zane usually has projectiles (shurikens, bow and arrow)
Jay has something with a chain (nunchuck, flair/kusarigama)
Cole is less concise but he usually has long stick with something at the end (scythe, hammer)
Idk, I just appreciate that. Even with the movie/SOG redesigns, they were careful to make sure their new weapons are still somewhat in line with what they had prior.

I need sleep but I am thinking about Nya. Spending her teen years largely isolated bc the boys are a team and she's not there yet. Ignored and underestimated because Wu never thought to question his biases let alone teach his students to do the same. The support character. The babysitter. (All day every day therapist, mother, maid.)
But using every slight to her advantage.
Being ignored is all the better for secrets. Being deemed powerless makes it all the easier to hide the power you have. Staying behind leaves time to build and create. Being someone Lloyd looks up to from a young age means he will see her as strong even when the others don't.
She puts so much work and passion into everything she does. She builds her own strength.
And then to learn now the role she was originally denied is what she has to be, like her choice doesn't even matter. Never given a right to her own power because it didn't serve everyone else yet. She's an accessory until they need her to be more powerful for them. It's not fair.
But it's never been fair. So again she rises.
Most of all, I can't stop thinking about her in season 6. After all of this, an accomplished samurai without anyone else's support, and a ninja elemental master who gained her true potential at an incredibly accelerated pace, to go on interviews and get asked about her love life.
To see herself the target of tabloid magazines speculating her private emotions, to get left out of things still even though she has every right to be with the team, to get asked to teach girls how to do their makeup when she's a martial artist, elemental master, engineer, and pilot.
I just. Wish I could give her a hug at every phase of her life, and tell her she's strong enough. That the rest of her matters, not just her looks or her usefulness at the time. The way her storyline morphs from the narrative being against her to eventually supporting her is just,,, so important to me.
Yeah. Nya.

Ok I’m real sorry to everybody who came to my blog for trigun and shit but my Ninjago hyperfixation is coming back with a vengeance so I’m subjecting y’all to another Nonsensical Insomnia Rant!!! this time it’s about my favorite little greasy dead bitch Morro and how freaky powerful he could’ve been (and definitely already was)
Spoilers for the entire Ninjago series ahead lol
So yeah. Morro. Ninjago’s biggest cautionary tale. He is everything Lloyd feared becoming and everything Kai could’ve became. His jealousy and desperation for approval killed him, and his inability to understand that love isn’t won purely via accomplishments ate him alive (he’s an icon for burnt out gifted kids everywhere lol), and most of all: he died tragically, and before he could reach his true potential.
So in the series, we never really got to see any other masters of wind before, and thus we didn’t have any strong guidelines for Morro’s inherent power level. All we know is that he was a prodigy at both martial arts and his elemental powers, so much so that Master Wu assumed that he’d be the Green Ninja (until the Golden Weapons didn’t react, that is). Even in death, Morro was easily one of the ninjas’ more challenging opponents, especially with his great tactical intellect factored in. In a nutshell, he was powerful, skilled, and more than determined to get his revenge on Wu, and the ninja were very lucky that Nya figured out her powers in time to be able to stop him.
Now, going back to the original point, we had no idea if Morro’s power level came from his ancestry, or from his prodigious skill. We do know that he died before he fully mastered his powers, and even then, he’s incredibly powerful. When he first showed up at the tea shop while possessing Lloyd in season five, rocked everyone’s shit almost effortlessly, easily besting all of the ninja in hand-to-hand combat. A case could be made that he was able to defeat them so easily because he was possessing Lloyd’s body, but then again, when they fight him later in the season while he’s not possessing a body, he seems to be just as, if not even stronger. Morro displayed incredible control over his elemental powers as well, being able to summon tornadoes, rip apart buildings, achieve sustained flight, and even alter the weather to his liking, all while canonically having died before he could fully master his abilities. Not only this, but his physical abilities also seemed to have been hampered slightly by being a ghost, which Morro voices frustration about, if I remember correctly.
So, for the longest time, therein lies the question: is the elemental power of wind always that strong, or was Morro’s prodigious strength biasing us? Now, with the introduction of Euphrasia in Dragons Rising, we kinda have an answer: yeah, the elemental master of wind is pretty much always gonna be scary fucking strong.
Forgive me for any errors since I’ve only seen the first season of DR, but from what we’ve seen of Euphrasia, she’s had her powers for a few years at most and is already a force of nature. With minimal to zero training, she was able to achieve sustained flight, finely control wind currents and air pressure, and even use her powers to help seal an interdimensional rift. She’s already easily on par with characters we’ve seen training for most of their lives, and if we compare her to Morro, they’re pretty damn close when it comes to raw prowess. In a fair fight Morro would likely beat her due to having superior experience and training, but it would still be close. So it’s not unreasonable to assume that wind is a powerful element in its own right, and with the right master, it can be really fucking deadly. For example:
Sucking all of the air out of an opponent’s lungs and suffocating them on dry land, á la Zaheer in Legend of Korra
Causing the air pressure in a given area to drop dramatically, inducing hypoxia in everyone present and rendering them unconscious
Manipulating wind currents in a given area on a large scale, altering weather patterns to a high degree
Emitting hyper-compressed blasts of pressurized air that break the sound barrier and rupture the eardrums of everyone in the area, as well as slicing through many materials like a knife through butter
Creating pockets of air in someone’s brain or bloodstream, resulting in an instant embolism
So yeah! The ninja are damn lucky that a) Morro died before he could unlock his true potential, and b) that Euphrasia seems to be on their side, because if not… oh boy.

✨Small Canon Things in Ninjago That Aren’t Necessarily Important to the Plot, but Important to Me Pt 2✨
(in honor of the first post reaching 2.5k notes)
1. the reason the ninja can’t summon their elemental dragons anymore is bc they’re too traumatized
2. Kai takes laxatives
3. Lloyd felt responsible for Nya’s sacrifice
4. Morro took a shot while he was in Lloyd’s body
5. Cole’s favorite color is orange
6. Chamille, the master of form, is a “bad girl” post s4
7. the ninja were literal children when they waltzed into Chen’s tournament and proceeded to beat all the adult EMs in the competition
8. prior to seabound, Nya resented her parents for not being there in her childhood, her mother more so than her father (✨mommy issues✨)
9. Nya is hyper-independent as a result of her childhood; while Kai is more openly accepting to his parents because he has a better memory of them
10. Wu was close enough with Lilly that he could remember whether or not she wore a necklace
11. Cliff Gordon was a “womanizer”
12. Lloyd didn’t naturally hit puberty until s8
13. Cole and Jay are best friends
14. whether or not you see Pixane as a bf/gf situation in canon, they are canonically soulmates
15. Jay has not yet received his inheritance letter
16. at least up until the Merge, Zane’s statue is still in downtown Ninjago City
17. ninjago citizens are fully aware their only protection are six super-powered teens/young adults
18. the ninja are still famous, public figures
19. Jay is the only ninja who hasn’t died (yet)
20. despite being a terrible actor, Lloyd is always sent on the undercover missions
21. the ninja are on first name basis with each others parents
22. Cole’s favorite genre of music is soft rock
23. Zane has selective memory
24. after Nya’s sacrifice, each ninja depicted a different stage of grief (Zane-Denial, Kai-Anger, Lloyd-Depression, Jay-Bargaining, and Cole-Acceptance)
25. Cole never actually had feelings for Nya, he was just flattered by the attention and petty about Jay being mad at him
26. elements react based on the master’s emotions
27. Jay is so emotionally dependent on being around other people that he loses his mind when he’s alone for too long
28. Lloyd had a chat with god and wasn’t impressed
29. Cole’s snoring can be heard throughout the monastery
30. Nya is not a morning person
31. Kai and Skylor have been in a situationship since s4
32. Lloyd being the grandson of god is not common knowledge
33. the group of civilians that were on the bounty when Cole fell are probably the only ones who truly realize the danger the ninja put themselves in on the regular to protect the city, and how close they are with each other
34. Wu didn’t want to tell the ninja about the green ninja prophecy because he was afraid of having a repeat of Morro
35. since s8 at the very least, the ninja all shared a room on the bounty until the monastery was rebuilt
36. Jay’s confidence in his own abilities fully depends on what others believe he’s capable of
37. several villains have called the ninja out on being “just a bunch of kids,” and then proceeded to get their shit rocked by said kids
38. the overlord can gloat to Lloyd all he wants to in crystallized, but fact of the matter is Lloyd defeated him when he was like twelve
39. Kai and Nya raised and took care of each other, it wasn’t just Kai doing all of the work
40. Kai is two years older than Nya
41. Zane’s biggest fear is losing his humanity
42. Lloyd’s biggest fear is becoming his father
43. Nya’s biggest fear is losing her individuality
44. Cole’s biggest fear is letting his family down
45. we the audience are the only ones who see the characters as legos; they’re real people in-universe
46. Kai likes spicy food
47. while elemental masters are immune to their elements to some extent, their elements can also be shown to hurt them in some circumstances
and as always, feel free to add on!!

in the first episode of possession, winds of change, as morro-possessing-lloyd approaches steep wisdom, wu says "i know that wind. that's not lloyd." the wording "that wind" implies that morro's wind is different than a possible previous master of wind's wind, which we can then extrapolate to other elements. therefore, each person's usage or expression of their element is unique to themselves and can be recognized by others, in this essay i will

made a ninjago oc but all it wants to do is party
its name is WULFTRAX (all caps) and it’s playing this with zane extra info belooowww
pronouns: IT'S PRONOUNCED WOLF TRACKS LITTLE MAN (it/he/they) species: WULFTRAX. digital? like, it HAS skin, and a skeleton, presumably, just… not a human head. likes: game, rave dislikes: no rave wants: to party character motivation: biggest loudest party backstory: we think it came from prime empire, but that’s all we got. maybe an unused rhythm game dj…? strengths: WULFTRAX does everything at 100%, and it doesn’t tend to stick around after a fight. it isn't fighting to win, it's fighting to go hogwild. on its back are one to six doc ock-like arms made of wire and interwoven with the stuff in season 9 that triggered everyone’s elemental powers. weaknesses: can only attack on the beat, will only fight if there’s music. it’s actually not that strong, its robot arms and machinery do all the fighting. it prefers to fight/party using someone else — elementals party pretty hard, all their colors and glowing and exploding is its favorite. alignment: very chaotic neutral. it does things on impulse and regardless of morals. he doesn’t seem to want to hurt anyone, just wants to party, and if hurting someone is how you gotta party, shrug! you can sway him pretty easily with the promise of a better rave. it’s not that clever, there is no scheming with this thing, but it does somehow get a lot of machinery and builds massive batteries and speakers and light shows
speech conventions: IT TALKS LIKE A FRAT BOY MET A CHRONICALLY ONLINE GAMER. NOT THE MOST COMPLICATED SENTENCES LMAO.
it also yells like everything it says due to the speakers in its mouth. its favorite people to mess with are kai, jay and lloyd. they have the shiniest explodiest powers, and are more split-second competitive.
#WULFTRAX#my art#‘I have made an oc to help/be friends with the ninja’ I have made an oc to fight them. I have made an oc to pummel them#people have done this before HAHDIDBDHDH except WULFTRAX is 1) a horrible fighter and 2) stupid#ninjago#ninjago oc#honestly it’s definitely someone you could/should use as a henchman. He won’t even realize. He will also destroy your lair#and then go OH MY BAD DUDE and that’s the end of that topic. Now it’s in your fridge#the second two images — it wanted to play DDR with jay and then went BRO YOU WANNA HELP WITH THIS SET so now Zane tricked it into -#bargaining to let jay out of the battery and it immediately agreed and then said WE’RE PLAYING OSU and didn’t leave room for argument so#now zane is playing a rhythm game he’s never played to let jay AND KAI out of the batteries and stop the rest of them from dying in#human osu! which was going to be its dance floor (it forgot people die when they’re hit by lightning)#And ALSO now they should probably stop it from holding the most dangerous rave#if the stuff they have is enough to send an elemental into superpowered overdrive it’s probably not healthy for a regular dude#as a meta note.#it’s obsessed w thrillseeking and adrenaline because he’s been alone for so so long that any new sensations are obsession-worthy#obsessed with feeling things and being real. doesn’t know how to regulate its obsession with something bc it has no sense of moderation#its primary purpose is to make big noise big party like programmed into it is its DJ sets. So now it makes the biggest loudest brightest#sets not understanding that this much noise/power can hurt someone or itself bc hurt is in fact an interesting sensation to it#it doesn’t KNOW this or underSTAND it. And it wouldn’t listen if told. BUT! that’s its pathology#IT HAS NO CONCEPT OF DEATH THERE IS NO THIS IS TOO DANGEROUS. THERE IS ONLY DA PORTY#it and porty mk would be besties#rule of cool with this thing. its cars are big its sets are big its music is loud and it’s got a giant flamethrower and a piano to drop#It broke from its programming but that doesn’t mean it broke from its programming yfeel#hrmmm.... yes........ self indulgent shiny loud digital dogmanthing#ill tag three of em theyre getting situations#kai smith#zane julien#jay walker

You know what, I hope we DO have a time skip, and the world is drastically changed, and different characters are aged up, and I hope that all the ninja are still just 'older teenagers' with absolutely no explanation.
That's the play.

this is the messiest thing I've ever written in my life and I might delete this in the morning. it's super late and I'm so tired I'm gonna say something about aro nya finally. because like - first of all season 3 makes so much sense if you watch it with the understandingf that this is a comphet thing. I'm only gonna speak about s3 here but skybound very much also factors into this. like a whole lot.
like - the love triangle and Nya's advances towards Cole were triggered through the perfect match machine. and that's when she starts showing interest. this very much reads to me as her being confused as to what romantic feelings feel like because she's never experienced them before and mistaking her existing platonic affection for Cole for romantic feelings.
(note: I've also seen people read this as her realizing she's polyam, which I think is also very cool, it's just not what I personally saw in that storyline)
it also offers her a solution to her already strained relationship with Jay - maybe the reason they're not really working out and she can't get herself to feel the right feelings is because he's not her perfect match, so maybe she'll feel the right way with cole.
and then it all goes up in flames. Jay's insecurities turn ugly and Cole fights back. nya is WILDLY uncomfortable. she ends up choosing neither of them. she wants both of them in their life but she doesn't want to choose one over the other. you already know how it goes.
nya at this point has internalized a lot of amatonormativity which does a lot of harm to her. as I mentioned before it ends up straining her relationship with Jay because she's trying to fit this mold of a good relationship but it feels wrong and hollow to her. it's just not the way she feels. so she distances herself from it because it's so uncomfortable and overcomplicated. This causes Jay to feel rejected and insecure and he copes with this by becoming even more clingy and making Nya MORE UNCOMFORTABLE so she pulls away again.
ultimately she wants him in her life but she wants the relationship to feel good and natural and not forced and suffocating. this is why I think a qpr would be a much more fitting progression for their relationship than tgem getting back together romantically. a qpr would be throwing out the window all the inherent expectations that come with a romantic relationship and that they both felt so pressured to fill. it would be them acknowledging that they care about one another deeply and that even though their connection isn't romantic it's still worth just as much. it's a fuck-you to all the things that caused them to fall apart in the first place.

The Ninjago fandom will have to pry Jay's accidental snake motif from my cold dead hands. I don't even know if it's enough to count as a motif but it is to me. We have:
Snakebit and Once Bitten Twice Shy. Self explanatory
Shortly after a fangpyre STILL tried to bite him. only him.
The Book of Elemental Powers described the element of lightning like this: "My kiss is deadly, but I am not a snake."
His travel pillow, looking closer, I'm pretty sure is just supposed to be a vague lightning theme but from some angles it does look like it's supposed to look like a snake (but there are many angles where it looks totally abstract too)
Tumblr media
I know I'm grasping at straws but this pic??? (yes I'm aware that he's not the only one here with serpentine imagery and also it's a magazine pic so it matter way less than anything else lol) he's so happy??? holding a vermillion??? or a baby fangpyre??? idk???
Tumblr media
i'm sure there's more but idk it's 4 am and i know i'm grasping at straws also i'm sure we can find accidental snake motifs for the others considering how prevalent the serpentine are. or just other motifs in general
on a related note, I could also talk about Cole's accidental death/undead motif which I find way more substantial

Sora's speech in DR pt. 2 is so wildly important to me because they touched on something I never expected to be properly handled in a show like ninjago: the fact that systems designed to oppress the most marginalized in society tend to oppress everyone else in more subtle ways, too, and only truly benefit the few elites at the top.
The dragons in Imperium have it the worst, because they are treated as objects and literally tortured for resources. But someone who is willing to treat one group like "mindless beasts" is also willing to treat other groups that way, i.e. everyone in the kingdom.
The media control combined with oppression of the dragons led Sora to be oppressed also, just for not partaking in the existing oppression. A society that wants an immovable hierarchy has to punish anyone who tries to move out of that hierarchy, even those in the middle or higher up on the totem pole. If that happened to Sora, who knows how many others had similar experiences that got swept under the rug or successfully repressed?
So heck yeah, "we are all dragons!" We can all band together to fight oppression. It sounds a bit silly compared with more serious shows, but the ideology behind it is super important, and I'm hyped to see it in children's TV.

It's been like a year since Tales of the Jedi came out but it's still hilarious to me that when returning to early Clone Wars Ahsoka they took one look at the age inappropriate tube top that's impossible to take seriously and said damn did we really put her in this and just retroactively gave her a better outfit and there was just an unspoken agreement with the audience that we would just roll with it and pretend that that was her outfit the whole time.
