How to Track Your Gender Fluidity

Recently I made a post with a screenshot of my gender tracker and was asked how I track my gender’s fluidity. I’ve been meaning to make an instructional post on how to set up the app so I redownloaded the app on a spare phone to show you guys.

In this tutorial, I will explain how to edit the MoodFlow App to track the fluidity of gender including changes and intensity, how to keep the app locked so others cannot look at your data, and how tracking genderfluidity can help someone better understand their gender identity. I will also provide some alternatives if you cannot use this app.

This method of tracking can be used by genderfluid, genderfaun, genderfae, genderflor, gendersylph, genderflux, fluidflux, boyflux, girlflux, enbyflux, questioning individuals, or anyone else on the genderfluid spectrum. Some personalization may be necessary but this tutorial will cover it.

Step 1: Downloading

You want to start by downloading the MoodFlow App.

As you can see, it is intended to be a mood tracker but there are customizable features so you can use it to track other things. It is available for free on the App Store and Google Play.

Step 2: Account Set up

The app will ask you to create an account. You will be prompted to put in your name and birthdate. These are optional.

Step 3: Color Palette

As part of the account set up, you will be asked to pick a color palette. You can change these later or customize them but this is the first important thing when it comes to tracking your gender. The app intends these colors to represent how you’re feeling (very bad, bad, okay, good, very good) but we will be using them to loosely represent your spectrum of gender. Later, these colors will make it easy to visually track your gender. There are five colors but it is okay if you have more than five genders. We will get to that later. They’re more like umbrellas for now. These colors will be a broad, simplified representation which gender you are experiencing on a given days. We will now look at the palettes (see below).

As a genderfaun individual, I personally use the "Default-Balance” palette (purple, purple-blue, blue, blue-green, green) to represent non-binary (purple), male (blue), agender (green), and the genders in between (purple-blue for bigender and blue-green for demigender). It is not a perfect system it works for me.

If you are a genderfae individual, I recommend the “Silver to Purple,” or “Sunset” palettes to represent how your gender varies from feminine, to neutral, to faded or whatever else.

If your fluidity covers the whole spectrum, I’d recommend “Farfalle,” “Sea and Sun,” “Pink to Blue,” “Yellows and Blues,” or “Kilimanjaro.” They have a range of masculine and feminine colors as well as some neutral grounds and mixes.

For any boyfluxes or masculine genderflux people, “Grey Means Neutral,” “By The Lake,” “Tea,” or “Into the Distance” could be used to represent the varying intensity of your gender.

For any girlfluxes or feminine genderflux people, “Raise the Lantern” or “All Pastel Everything” could be used to represent the changing intensity of your gender.

“Gray Scale Me” is a good choice for any genderflux individual with only one gender.

“Mojito,” “Outerspace,” and “Into The Distance” are good choices for people who are xenogender, agender, or just do not like the traditional “masculine vs feminine" system.

Again, you can edit these later, make a custom color palette, or you can just ignore using colors and use other features (explained later) but having a color palette to represent the range of your genderfludity is helpful. You don’t have to use these recommendations either. For me, I associate genders with their flags so I pick colors similar to those but you can do whatever feels right. Any color can represent any gender. You can also play around with it later to find whatever colors fit you best.

Step 4: Settings

When you are done setting up your account, you will open the screen to a calendar.

If you tap the three bars on the top, you will be given a sidebar where you can visit your settings.

In the settings, you can change your personal information, log in and out of your account, enable or disable notifications, and change your rating colors (the color palette).

Step 5: Personalization and Security

Within the settings, you will see the options to change your emotions & ratings, background, activities, and add a pinlock.

The background change is self-explanatory. There's a wide variety of stock images that are very nice but you can also add your own. I like using flags. If you’ve seen any of my old posts, I use a design with cats in the colors of the transflag. If you would like any wallpapers, you can ask me, you can check out r/lgbtwallpaper, just use google images, take your own photo, or use your own art.

You can use the pinlock to prevent other people from looking at your data. If you are in the closet, this can be a very useful so people don’t look at your information. Make sure you remember your pin though.

You can also back up data here but that is something to worry about later.

You can make other changes as well depending on preference.

Step 6: Gender(s), Pronouns, Intensity, etc.

Open emotions & ratings to create your genders. You can also add genders later when you are making entries but it is easy to do here.

Here, you can rename your colors. Where it says rating, just tap the words next to it and you can change it.

To make genders, start by picking your layout. The options are grid, mix, segment, and segment #2. I personally like using segment #2. The layout will separate your genders into four categories. You cannot rename the categories (they will be labeled positive & energized, positive & calm, negative & calm, and negative & energized) so if seeing them bothers you, pick mix. For the tutorial, I am picking segment #2.

You will then see a section labeled editor. You will have the option to add emotions and remove emotions. Start by removing all of the emotions. It starts with 60 (the maximum) so this may take some time.

Once you’ve deleted all the emotions, you can add your genders. It will prompt you to name it and put it in a category (positive & energized, positive & calm, negative & calm, and negative & energized). The categories don’t affect anything but it will change the order the genders are displayed and how they will appear in the app’s analysis features.

Since I am fluidflux and like using the segment #2 layout, I like to order them by intensity. I put libragenders and agender under positive & energized, demigenders under positive & calm, paragenders under negative & calm, and “full” genders under negative & energized. If you are not genderflux, I would recommend sorting them by feminine, masculine, neutral/ other, xenogender, unsure, etc. Again, this depends on the individual so you may want to play around with it. Here is mine:

After you create and organize all of your genders, return to your settings and scroll down to activities. Like before, delete all the activities.

Below, there are a collection of icons. Tap one and you will be able to create an activity. I like to track what pronouns I use, the intensity of my gender, and how fluid or static my gender is. You can also add things like how you’re experiencing gender dysphoria or euphoria that day, your gender expression, and how you are presenting that day. There are many icons to choose from so pick which ones you think suit which thing best.

Step 7: Tracking Your Gender

To track your gender, exit your settings to the app’s homescreen. If you are having trouble finding it, tap the middle option on the bar on the bottom that says “Feed.” Then, in the same spot, tap the plus (+) button. You will be taken to a screen where you add your entry for the day. You should ideally add one entry per day. You need to pick a color summarizing your gender for the day and can select the individual genders you are feeling at the time. Here, you can also add or remove genders by hitting customize.

Hit continue to move to activities. Here, you can select pronouns, intensity, etc. You also have the option of adding photos or listing medication. Listing medication is helpful if you are on testosterone or estrogen and the photos are helpful if you want to remember how you are presenting that day or want to track the effects of HRT.

There is also a place to type labeled journal if you would like to write a more detailed explanation of how you’re experiencing gender or if anything noteworthy has occurred.

By hitting customize, you can enable or disable features. A feature you can enable is tracking sleep. Sleep is tracked on a sliding scale so genderflux individuals can use this to track the intensity of their gender as well.

Step 8: Viewing Your Gender

You can best view your gender from the homescreen/ the feed. Any entries from that day will be shown at the top. By tapping it, you have the option of editing it if you would like to change something later. I would recommend not deleting genders from your entry if your gender changes during the day and instead indicating in some way that it changed.

You can scroll down to see the calendar for that month. Each day will be highlighted with the color you choose that day, making it easy to see any patterns. This is why we choose colors representing masculinity, femininity, neutrality, etc rather than having colors represent individual genders.

On the bottom bar, you can tap calendar to see other months’ data.

The journal section is the place to write down any detailed entries. The insight section will provide some analysis of your entries.

The most useful data is at the top. It will display the oscillation of your gender and the spread over an adjustable period of time based on color.

Below, it will also show how many times you selected a specific gender, pronoun, intensity, etc.

Step 9: More Personalization

Everyone’s gender is different. You may need to edit this further to fit your fluidity. Some people have less than five genders they are fluid between so each color could represent one gender, some people may want different colors to represent different umbrellas of gender, and more.

If you are multigender/ experience more than one gender at a time, it can be kind of difficult figuring out how to add an entry for that. Adding more genders and activities can make it more detailed. It just depends how specific you want your tracker to be.

Just play around with it and figure out what is right for you.

Step 10: Why Tracking Your Gender Is Helpful

Pretty much every trans person has those self-doubt moments and people on the genderfluid spectrum often experience that to a greater degree. I think we all know that feeling when your gender changes and you wonder “What if I’ve been this the whole time?” Very scary, especially if you’re just beginning to figure yourself out or if you’ve already come out.

Tracking your gender helps with that feeling. By having something physical you can look at that proves your gender really was a different one in the past and you weren’t faking or deceiving yourself.

You can see my tracking from 2021 above. I started a new gender tracker this year. In 2020, my gender was actually male (blue) most of the time and my gender would change in some way every few days. As you can see, I was non-binary or bigender for pretty much all of January this year and flipped to libramasculine on the final day. That is very unusual for me so if I was not tracking my gender, I wouldn’t know my gender fluidity was following an abnormal pattern and I likely would have doubted myself a lot and questioned if I was ever really a boy.

If you are questioning your gender identity, a tracker can be helpful because it is more reliable than your memory, assuming you don’t delete anything. There is less room for doubt if you are looking at evidence you really did experience something. And, if you are questioning the fluidity of your gender, the same thing applies.

Of course, someone who is not genderfluid can try this and if you later realize you are not genderfluid despite having varied data on a tracker, that is okay as well. This is a helpful tool but it is not for everyone and ultimately you are the best judge of your identity.

If you cannot use this app, you can also use a calendar or planner. If you are in the closet, marking each day with a colored highlighter isn’t that suspicious. You can also write down the genders you experience on different days and such. You could also try using a period tracker but that may be more difficult since you usually cannot change the settings and symptoms on those.

❤ There's no topic that she is shy of. Periods aren't some taboo thing to her. So talk about it, bring it up, so she can come up with a conclusion.

❤ Queue at-home remedies like weird yoga positions and heating pads. She might even be inspired to invent some new form of a pressure point presser to help you.

❤ She'll remember to check up on you. I can imagine her downloading a period tracker app just to track your cycles.

❤ She'll even massage your lower stomach, doing it absentmindedly, as well as making a scene: lighting candles, giving you pillows and a hot rag for your head, and making it into a complete spa day.

❤ But she expects to same treatment when she's on her period, too.

❤ Even though she's usually not as selfless, she'll definitely go out and buy pads and tampons for you so you don't feel uncomfortable or get misgendered.

[HAIR] A mid-back length mess of loose brunette waves, generally pulled forward to drape over one shoulder. Soft and silky smooth, its care obviously involved much love and attention – and vanity.Touch at your own risk.

TREASURE HUNTER Kjrn presently makes her living by delving into ruins, tombs, and other such places most folk have no business wandering into in search of anything she might turn a profit on. Want some company on a good ol’ dungeon delving? Or your character responds to a posting she’s made seeking assistance?

SKY PIRATE Annnd sometimes when the more legally palatable treasure hunting jobs are lacking, Kjrn may or may not turn to a bit of piracy to fill the gaps. She’s targeted everything from small Garlean crafts to merchant vessels, usually trying to avoid violence where she can. Maybe your character was on one of these vessels, or has come to seek one of the bounties placed upon her for said crimes? Or maybe – just maybe – your character is interested in signing on with her?

CAPTAIN OF THE FORTUNESEEKER As mentioned before, Kjrn owns her own small airship by the name of the Fortuneseeker. She claims the title of captain upon her, with a crew of about ten (NPCs) underneath her. Maybe you’re looking to sign onto the crew? Or maybe you just have a more temporary need for someone with an airship to ferry yourself or any goods – legal or otherwise – from one place to the next? The sky’s the limit!

MERCHANT OF MYRIAD MISCELLANEA Naturally, after a victorious venture in dungeoneering or plundering, Kjrn will usually come out of it with a number of items in need of off-loading. She has a particular eye for anything shiny and beautiful like gems and jewelry, but she’s also been known to come back with anything from weapons to magical items to sell to whomsoever is inclined to pay good coin. Come buy something shiny from her!

DALMASCAN RESISTANCE AFFILIATE Kjrn and her wife, Pria, were once fairly respected members of the Resistance, salvaging Garlean magitek to refit and use against them when all was said and done. However, after the former’s passing, Kjrn stepped down from her active position in the Resistance to take on a more auxiliary role by helping support it financially. She still maintains connections to the Resistance to this day, and some still haven’t given up the hope that she might eventually return to the fight.

GAMBLING ADDICT Kjrn’s vice of choice would be a good drink, some good company, and a good game of cards. Or dice. Or anything, really, so long as there are stakes involved. It’s a pretty general and basic hook, but hey! It works!

Fetishistic characters, i.e. “f*ta”, “tr*p”, etc. Actual transgender, agender, genderfluid, etc. characters are 100% fine, but if your character is written not as a fleshed out person but as thinly veiled ERP-bait, I’m not interested.

OOC Romance or possessiveness or clinginess. Just… don’t. I don’t want to date you. I don’t want to sext with you. I don’t want to be up your butt 24/7, and I sure as hell don’t want you up mine. RP partners with reasonable personal space boundaries only need apply, please!

ERP-heavy/only connections. I’m not opposed to sexual RP coming up, but I ask that it not be the goal of every single or even a good deal of the RP we do. To be entirely honest, I much prefer fade-to-black as opposed to writing out such scenes, anyway. Please respect this! Sometimes I feel like a "fake bi" too ( diff anon, saw the other post). Or at the very least, I don't have a huge grasp on what kind of people I'm attracted to. It's harder for me to become attracted to women, but i think this is because I'm unsure of how to interact romantically(?) Idk I hope I'm making sense. But when I am, I fall hard lol. Not having that grasp in preference really does affect me, it's like navigating a stormy sea which fills me with guilt. I feel like I should know by now

There’s not really any reason to interact differently in romantic situations/relationships with different genders. You don’t have to suddenly follow a different script when you’re with a woman as opposed to when you’re with a man. In fact, I’d say you’re having more fun and authentic interactions when you don’t follow any script. Just be yourself and when you don’t know how to proceed with someone (regardless of gender) just say that you don’t know what to do and maybe you can figure it out together.

That being said... I feel like there’s an almost obsessive idea in the bi community that we ~have to~ figure our a preference, and I feel like that’s a very twisted form of internalised biphobia. One aspect of biphobia is people asking us what our preference is bc they want to use that as a “gotcha” against us. The want to argue: “Well if you have a preference then you’re actually more straight/more gay, you’re not really bi if you’re not 50:50.”

Because of that bisexuals have pointed out for years that it’s okay to have a preference, that it’s not making us any less bi if we prefer one gender... all that jazz. And of course that’s true but I also think it has pushed a lot of focus onto the whole topic of preferences and now you get bisexual people who - despite knowing that a preference is fine - are feeling this anxiety over thinking they have to know exactly what their preference is.

But the thing is... the whole concept of bisexuality makes it fucking hard to define what a “preference” even is. Is it how many crushes you have on each gender? Is it how many times per day you see some random person and find them sexually attractive? How would you even count that? Nobody sits down at night and looks at their attraction tracker app that says “today you were attracted to 17 men, 6 women and 8 non-binary people - this means your preference of the day was for men”.

Or is “preference” whatever gender you have stronger crushes for? Again - how would you measure that? And even if you have had strong crushes on women in the past - who’s to say you won’t be able to have a strong crush on a man in the future?

I used to think I had a preference but one day I realised that it got more vague and harder to grasp the more time I’ve spent as an openly bisexual person. I am attracted to a lot of people. There’s a wide spectrum of women that I find attractive so you could say “the fact that I am attracted to many different types of women means that my preference is for women”. But then I am also attracted to men, though my type is VERY specific and thus a bit harder to come by. So when I do find a guy that fits my type I am 110% into him. I give him my everything. Take one look at my personal blog and you’ll see what I mean lol coming from that angle I could also say “my sexual feelings for men are way more intense compared to my sexual feelings for women so I guess I prefer men”. Or I could just not bother with figuring out a preference and enjoy how many sexy people there are in the world.

If you really want to have a somewhat representative image of what your preference might be you’d probably have to wait until the day you die to look back onto your entire life.

And even then the question remains: does it really matter? You have the potential to be attracted to multiple genders - that’s what matters! Whether you go through a period in which you are absolutely horny on main for women or you go through a time where men seem like the best invention since sliced bread... it doesn’t change that fact that you’re bisexual.

Bisexual people can have a preference. For some bisexuals it is very clear and easy to define what their preference is. But if it’s not clear to you then so be it. Try to liberate yourself rom the diea that you have to know exactly what your preference is so you can move forward. Just move. A preference will follow if it’s there!

Google Fit guide: Everything you have to think about Google's wellness stage

Google Fit is the fitness app for the rest of us. It’s not the app that doubles as a social network or offers weekly fitness challenges. Instead, Google Fit focuses on simplicity and doing a few core things really well. There are benefits and downsides to that approach, all of which we’ll explore in our comprehensive Google Fit guide.

Google Fit profile & navigating the app

Fitness apps can be hit or miss — some are overly packed with features and require a learning curve while others have an intuitive design but not many features. Google Fit falls in the latter category. Depending on what type of user you are, you’ll either think Google Fit is the best thing ever or way too simple for what you need. Once you tell Google Fit a little about yourself (gender, date of birth, weight, and height), you’ll see a quick walkthrough of the app’s two main activity metrics: Move Minutes and Heart Points (more on these later). After that, you’ll find yourself on the app’s home screen. There are three main sections of the Google Fit app: Home, Journal, and Profile. A brief description of each can be found below: Home: The Home screen shows an overview of your current day’s activities and health metrics, including Move Minutes and Heart Points, steps taken, calories burned, distance traveled, heart rate data, and weight. Journal: The Journal could also be referred to as a schedule or an agenda. It’s a simple, scrollable list of all your recorded activities, whether that be a short walk or a long swim. Profile: The Profile page is where you’ll adjust your Move Minutes and Heart Points, as well as personal information. Head back to the Home tab and click on the big profile widget on the top. This will take you to a summary of your daily, weekly, and monthly activity stats in the form of Move Minutes and Heart Points. If you scroll through your history and want more details on your activity stats for that day, click on the day and you’ll find all your recorded activities. From there, you can click on an individual activity to see more minute details like distance, steps, calories, and pace metrics.

Google’s goal with Move Minutes and Heart Points is to make the results of exercising easier to understand. It’s a different approach to what other fitness apps offer, but that’s not a bad thing. It just means that if you’re already used to tracking your fitness with another app, you may not want to dive right into Google Fit. However, the focus on Move Minutes and Heart Points is a seriously valuable way to go about teaching users how to stay healthy. Like I said — it’s the fitness app for the rest of us.

Apps compatible with Google Fit

Google Fit is its own app — why would you want to connect it with another fitness app? There are a few reasons. Let’s say you use a Garmin device for tracking your workouts through an app like Runtastic, but you really love Google Fit’s Move Minutes and Heart Points metrics. If you connect your Google Fit account to Runtastic, your fitness data will automatically transfer over to Google Fit. You also might want to connect Google Fit to another app if you’re using a Wear OS device. As we’ve already discussed, Google’s fitness app isn’t the most versatile app out there. So, if you want to keep track of your activity in a more powerful app like Strava or Runkeeper, connecting your Google Fit account to a third-party app will do the trick.

You can also schedule recurring exercises with Google Fit through Google Calendar. To do so, open Google Calendar, tap the “+” button on the bottom-right corner, then tap Exercise. From there, you can choose which exercises you’d like to schedule (run, walk, yoga, hike, etc.), how often you’d like the exercise to recur, the duration of your exercise, and what time of day you’d like to exercise. If you live and die by Google Calendar (like me), this is a great way to integrate it into your schedule.

Devices compatible with Google Fit

A number of fitness and health devices are compatible with Google Fit, most of them being Wear OSsmartwatches. Google Fit is the default fitness app for Wear OS devices (unless a company includes its own fitness app), so you can expect to use Google Fit if you pick up a Wear OS smartwatch. Every Wear OS smartwatch is compatible with Google Fit, though the data the app records will depend on which watch you’re using. For instance, Google Fit won’t be able to record heart rate data if you’re using a Wear OS device without a heart rate sensor, such as the older Skagen Falster. If your Wear OS watch doesn’t have a heart rate sensor but you happen to own a standalone heart rate sensor (such as a chest strap or arm band), you can connect that device to Google Fit to see your heart rate data. Other non-Wear OS devices work with Google Fit too, though there are far fewer of them. Notably, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 and Mi Band 4 work with Google Fit, as well as the Huawei Band 3 Pro. Other Google Fit-compatible devices include the Withings Move and Move ECG, Withings Body Cardio, Body, and Body Plus smart scales, Eufy Smart Scale, Smart Scale C1, Smart Scale P1, and even the old Sony SmartBand. All Polar devices are also compatible with Google Fit. If you own a Fitbit device and would like your fitness data transferred over to Google Fit, there’s a third-party app for that, but no official way of connecting your accounts from the Fitbit app itself.

Do you need the Google Fit app if you already own a Google Fit-compatible device?

Nope, but you won’t get the best experience that way. Smartwatches and fitness trackers don’t have big screens, making it more difficult to view detailed activity information. Installing the Google Fit app on your phone will ensure you’re getting the most data in the best way possible. Also, if you want to connect your Google Fit account to another fitness app that’s not available on your watch, you’ll need to download the Google Fit app on your phone.

What’s missing from Google Fit?

Google Fit’s strengths lie in its simplicity. Essentially, it’s the app version of a basic activity tracker — it keeps track of your simplest health metrics and not much more. The main aspect missing from Google Fit is any kind of social platform. Other popular fitness apps, like Fitbit or Strava, put an emphasis on community. Being able to reach out to a community of like-minded people to help you along your fitness journey can be extremely helpful in certain situations. Fitbit’s app, for instance, let’s you join health and fitness groups, post status updates and photos, comment on posts, and ask for advice if you need it. Strava focuses more on activity progression and staying up to date on how your friends are performing. None of that is available in Google Fit. The app also lacks any training programs. This is certainly an advanced feature that not all fitness apps have, but it’s worth bringing up. Google Fit also doesn’t display progress over time for certain activities. You can’t click on a running activity and see how you’ve progressed over the previous weeks or months. You can do this with weight, heart rate, Move Minutes, and Heart Points, but not with exercises. There’s also no food or water logging in Google Fit, though you can keep track of your weight. Some of these things would be excusable if there was a Google Fit website that gave users more options and features (some apps push the more advanced features to the web to keep the mobile apps cleaner). Unfortunately, Google shuttered the Google Fit web interface in February 2019, so the app is all you get. Overall, Google Fit is a solid start to what could one day be a powerful fitness application. For right now, it’s simple, clean, and it’s compatible with a ton of other fitness and health apps. Also, Move Minutes and Heart Points are genuinely useful metrics that will no doubt help people get and stay healthy. Whether Google Fit is the app for you will likely depend on what type of athlete you are and whether or not you’re already invested in another app. We’ll be sure to continually update this article as more Google Fit features are added. Dhamma 10 day Vipassana

A while ago I signed up for a meditation retreat (https://www.dhamma.org/), got approved to attend it, and have now just returned.

First, the logistics:

The retreat is 10 days long (+2 to account for arrival and departure days)

It is supposedly non-sectarian and non-religious

Every day starts at 4am and goes till 9pm

You meditate up to 10 hours a day, in stretches of 60 and 90 minutes

During the ten days, you don’t talk, read, or write, nor you do any heavy exercise (walking is OK)

Breakfast is at 6:30AM, lunch is at 11AM. At the lights out time at 9PM, you will not have eaten for 10 hours already

The course is completely free, donations are accepted only after you have finished the course

Keeping crazy hours, going off grid, minimising mental noise, and maxing out on meditation, looked to me like an excellent quadruple whammy to try out. I went in with very little expectations and then just let the process carry me.

To jump ahead a little, it was quite awesome, at times trippy, I learned a good few bits about myself as well as about my meditation and, at times, it was odd, annoying, and even infuriating, with the negative categories serving a meta game of extra holding-your-shit-together-ness.

The hardest part, of course, was to sit without fidgeting for long periods at a time. The longest back-to-back sessions were 90-60-90, with 15 minute breaks between them.

I feel quite ambivalent about the whole thing, however in the sum I think it was a strong net positive. Though if you are considering the course yourself, I would suggest doing some more softcore meditation first, e.g. using the headspace app or similar. Speaking of headspace: if you go through the 10 day trial and find out you’d like to try it out for longer, give me a shout and I’ll send you a code for a 30 day subscription.

Premises

The premises were top-notch. I had a private room with full control over a radiator, the meals were decent, the location was in countryside (an hour’s drive west of Gloucester in my case, but they have ~200 venues world-wide) with not much noise going on around, and the meditation hall (my first time to be in one) was spacious and appropriately lit/dimmed. You got a padded mat, and cushion on top of it to sit on, and there were also chairs for the ones who meditate that way, as well as people were bringing their own gear. Oh right, the total number of people was around 200 - way more than I'd have expected.

Oddities

The first thing to mention is that the meditation teacher is not an in-person human but rather a set of video and audio recordings made in 1991. The “assistant teacher” is essentially an iPad DJ, starting and stopping the tracks as per schedule. During the course he didn’t utter more than just a few “let’s take a short break” lines at the appointed times. So 99.5% of what you’ll hear, will be a recording made in the nineties.

The second oddity was the chanting. The teacher in the recording explains that these are not religious chantings, and that they are there to just put you in the right mood. For me they definitely did not do the job. If you can sit through five minutes of this, you’ll most likely be fine. The chanting happens three times a day during the core meditation sessions, three minutes in the beginning and three in the end, with the duration increasing quite a bit as the days went on. The coping mechanism I developed was to keep my eyes open during the chanting, as well as, not knowing Pali, imagining that the old man is reciting to me his shopping list.

The third oddity were the discourses—75 minute long sessions of recorded video playback each evening. If you can sit through 30 minutes of this without popping a vein, you’ll most likely be fine, too.

If you, just like me, can’t deal with either the discourses nor the chanting, you’ll still be fine, you’ll just be running the course on “hard” setting, making yourself more badass in the process.

Finally, the content itself while not necessarily sectarian or religious (a point the teacher insists on repeating), is not exactly secular either. At times stories are retold as “truths” and opinions/interpretations as “laws of nature”, all of which can be forgivable when you treat your teacher for what it is: a recording from nineteen-nineties of a grandpa explaining why it is important to eat cabbage five times a day and how that will allow you to reincarnate into a cave bat in your next life.

To sum it up:

There is chanting six times a day, at the start and end of the core meditation sessions

There are 75 minute long recorded “discourse” videos every evening

The content is not secular and can be described as mildly religious

The technique

For the first three days we were practicing just observing our breath. While the guidelines of the course suggest not to change anything, I did not see any real harm in counting the breaths to keep yourself focused: counting up to ten and then starting again. During these three days people will be making a lots of noise: fidgeting, sneezing, coughing, blowing noses, tooting, burping and, at times, giggling. Not because they wouldn’t be observing the “noble silence” but because some of them are very new to meditation

On day four, with much aplomb, vipassana is introduced, and it turns out to be your plain old body scanning. In the beginning the body scans are more meticulous and can take up to 20 minutes a sweep as you, in your mind, try to get a sense of each body part, but over days it becomes faster and more generic, up to doing a sweep in two breaths. With that also the mediation hall becomes a good deal quieter.

On day 10 “metta” is introduced, which is not a meditation technique, unless you consider “groaning nice words to push out your positive vibrations into the world” a technique, in which case by all means please go nuts with it.

Tripping balls

On day two I became hyperaware of noise (e.g. clattering of cutlery against dishes, shifting of chairs, birdsong)

Surprisingly quickly, the day-to-day mental echoes went away around day three

From around day four, my eyes started leaking randomly during meditation sessions due to what I’m guessing was just plain old relaxation

I started learning the exact duration of subjective time flow around day five, when I ramped down the daily meditation hours from full ~10 to about seven a day, skipping the two 90 minute optional blocks.

I had a mini breakthrough on day five when I gave up on my legs and became able to sit for 90 minutes without changing posture or fidgeting too much. The tracker in my watch started tracking my meditation sessions as “deep sleep”

On day 10 the noble silence was lifted and I found that (1) my voice had went up third of an octave and (2) I had suddenly become very thirsty. Ended up sitting in a corner, drinking water and humming to myself for the first hour.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

While there is a ton to be said about the unnecessity of the chanting, the datedness of the discourses, their shortcomings, the absence of explanation skills in the video-teacher, and the absolute lack of editing or revising an otherwise extremely ascetic and thought-through course, the practice was fantastic for focusing on yourself. The main point was also driven home rather clearly through the practice: that self-awareness and detachment (/equanimity) combined is a very powerful tool at the disposal of anyone. The clarity, or at least sense of clarity that came out if it, is quite intoxicating. I’ve definitely crawled out of the cave feeling stronger.

The good

The premises are excellent

The prolonged meditation + silence combo works and works really well

As it is completely no-strings-attached free, it fits all budgets

The bad

If your body gives out, you are faced with a choice between physical pain that is bit too intense to sink into vs mental boredom. A way to mitigate that would be to introduce an optional yoga session (yoga came around as means for people to meditate longer). The general dhamma policy is that yoga is ok, but that they don't have the premises, which has interestingly been the case for last 30 years

The course is ripe for a refresh—the original discourses were held at a very different time—meditation has now become more mainstream and has been successfully detached from spirituality, and so the topics the discourses address at times aren't relevant at all anymore, at least not in the western world

There was a weird gender thing going on where the course was run as two courses - the two groups were physically occupying different rooms - there was two of everything, the retreat space basically split in a left and right half, a "male course" and a "female course". I can only guess on the motivation but it feels like it would have to do with the situation of the still rather apalling state of womens rights in India. This is not India, however, and you could as well have gendered libraries. If one would like to go bit deeper on the gender front, the whole group was split in old male students, old female students, new male students, new female students. The four groups at times were given assignments one after the another, but the order always prevailed to be male->female.

The ugly

The chanting does very little for concentration and even less for setting the mood

The tone of all communication is prescriptive, lacking any explanations. It’s just “do this in this very specific way” without explaining the why

The teacher has a massive propensity towards extreme repetition. Extreme repetition. Addressing that and the verbal incontinence could allow reducing the evening courses from 75 minutes to 30, making them a great deal more palatable

The entire purpose of this testament is to help you not only secure your home and maintain privacy, but also strike a balance between overall curb appeal and home security. You may not think curb appeal matters, but if you ever need to sell your home or stay within your current abode for a prolonged period of time… it pays to have something nice looking to wait out the SHTF situation or simply having to live amongst those you dislike. =============================================== Assess the situation Before you can even begin to think about how to secure your home you’ll need to ask yourself a series of questions to better understand not only your needs but also what requirements your city, state, country and possibly even the home or neighbor association wants met. The Questions: • What is the demographic in my area? • Are the people lower, middle or higher income? • What permits must I get? • Am I allowed to defend myself and\or my property when threatened? • What are the gun laws in my area? • Are certain breeds of dogs prohibited? • Is there an association that controls certain aspects of the area I live in? • Do I know anyone who does drugs? • Do I know anyone that has ever committed a crime? • Do I know someone whose friends or relatives to someone who has done drugs or committed a crime? • Am I a friend or relative to someone who has done drugs or committed a crime? The reason we ask you to ask yourself these questions is due to the simple fact that not everything you can do would be considered legal or at least within reason. Some associations or laws will limit your use of force or how high one can build a fence or even if one can own a specific breed of dog or not. Some people, depending on the current situation with race relations and/or the political playing field, may not take too kindly to you fixing up and improving your home. Some may simply dislike the fact that you’re a new face in the area and distrust you. Certain areas and classes tend to be safer than others, while simply being in a suburb may put you on the list of houses to get robbed. Even having partaken in drugs, a crime, or knowing someone who has done so can increase your risk at being robbed, or worse. No matter what, you need to know your laws, know your rights, and know what specifically you can do to your property in order to protect yourself. =============================================== The Criminal Element Most of your ‘Professional’ criminals strike during the day and not at night. The criminal element that operates at night usually consist of amateurs, gangs, drug addicts, people looking for thrills, or minors—your true blue criminal who knows a thing or two will strike during the day, usually around 9AM when people are at work or school. Real professionals don’t want to hurt you, your family or your animals, and they’re usually more afraid of you then you are of them. These true criminals will spend weeks to months scouting out an area. They’ll operate in middle class to upper class areas. They’ll look the part of a sale representative or someone simply visiting. They look for clues and tells of whether you’re home or not, like for instance if your car is parked outside your garage and what type of car you drive. They’ll monitor Facebook feeds, use Google Maps (among others), tap into your phone lines or simply try to pick up the same frequency as your handheld phone, your child’s walkie-talkie or a baby monitor. They appear friendly, don’t look criminal, and even will talk to your kids and the people around your neighborhood. They can even be working for a legitimate business like construction, lawn care, or simply appear to be selling magazines or some sort of service. The entire point is they don’t look like a part of the criminal element and they know what to do, how to do it, and appear not to be doing anything out of the ordinary at all. They know you, your family and your schedule and can use today’s technology, besides social networking, to help themselves to your belongings. They want to be in, out and not draw attention to themselves. So that means you need to take the proper precautions, have your security in layers, and learn how to minimize your losses as you can’t fully prevent loss. =============================================== How a Mark is Chosen Some crimes and robberies may be random, yet that shouldn’t make you think it isn’t any less important to be quite prejudice with those you associate with. We’re not talking outright bigotry or racism, mind you, however we do mean learning that location not only matters but also how you, yourself act and how you care for your property. A lot of criminals, professional or not, look for several key factors before they mark a house to be hit. The below is only but a few of the items they possibly look for before choosing if a house is worth the risk or not. Some questions that they may ask themselves are below: Familiarity with the target(s) and their property: • Is it occupied? > If so, what is the number of occupants? > Do they have pets? • If not, are they moving in or out? > Is the house completely empty? > Is it being remodeled? > Are people there working or picking up belongings? • Have I ever been within the house? • Do I know these people? • Have I conversed with them before? • Do their pets know me? • Can I gain entry again through previous interactions? • Do they have weapons that can be used against me? • What are their personal attributes (sex, gender, sexuality, religious and political beliefs…etc) • Is the house vacant for extended periods • Is the house routinely empty during the day • Are the occupants new? • Are the occupants young or old? • Is it a house with college kids or not? How convenient is the location: • Is the house in a high crime area? • Are there already potential offenders nearby? • Is the house near a major thoroughfare? • Is the house near an artery street/road? • Is the house on the outskirt of the area? • Has the house been burglarized before? • Have other houses within the area been burglarized before? How good is the house’s Visibility: • Can I be seen from afar? • Can the neighbors see me? • Can I see the house from afar? • Can I see the house on Google maps? • If I survey the house, will people see and question me? Accessibility: • Are the house’s plans online? • How many windows and doors do they have? • Do they lock the garage? • Is the garage attached? • Are there decks or trees I can use to gain access? • Is there a basement? • Are the basement windows secured? • Do they have a security system? • What kind of cover exists around the house? • Is it secluded? • How good is the lighting around the house (A lot of people will avoid robbing a house with light on)? • Is the house on a corner lot? • Is the house designed with concealing architecture? • Is it next to the alley? • Is the house old? • Are entry points (windows and doors) showing sign of decay or disrepair? • Are the occupants careless about security procedure? • Does the house have any security devices that I can see? • Houses displaying signs of wealth (expensive items, decorations, boxes and packaging of high-end items) • Do they have a security system? Potential rewards: • Are they wealthy? • Do they live a comfortable lifestyle? • Do they have items I can gain without going too far into the house? • Do they have a safe? • Do they encrypt and password protect their electronics? • Would they use trackers on any of their property? • Is the risk worth it? • How quick can I sell off the loot? As you can see, just from guesswork alone, if someone were to rob a house and ask themselves these questions… they’d cut their risk, a lot, while increasing yours. It’ll be easier to break in and rob an elderly couple or someone new in the area than a young couple or some college house that has been in the area for awhile. It’d also be easier to take advantage of and possibly worse of a woman than a man. =============================================== Securing points of entry This chapter is dedicated to explaining what you can possibly do to your doors, windows and garage. These three areas are the most common and should be the only real possible points of entry to your home. Everything here should be taken into consideration before being applied to anything. Laws and neighborhood associations aside, having a fortress of freedom in the middle of suburbia may increase yours odd to be investigated or robbed than lessen them. Always think and assess before doing any of the suggestions below. Not all doors or windows will need the same level of security as the others, whereas some will need something much more drastic. Bars in the middle of a suburb will look out of place and give people a reason to question you and your motives. This doesn’t mean you can’t outfit some frames and pre-installed brackets and sockets, just in case. Be aware you’ll run into some suggestions for windows, doors or the garage already suggested on another list within this chapter. The door: The door will always be the main point of entry, if possible, for any criminal element. Especially if the door is out of sight or is the least visible point of entry. They would rather go through a door than try to force a window and draw possible attention to themselves or cause more noise than necessary. • The money is worth the initial investment • All tips should be applied to any and all doors on your property • ADT or some other security sticker on all doors and garage doors (ensure the company is real and does business in your area) • Ensuring all doors are locked when away or not in use • Never post or place NRA stickers on your doors (the stickers are magnets for gangs that are on the lookout for houses to steal guns from) • Never post or place political stickers on your doors (this, too, acts like a magnet for some troublesome people) • Place an emergency sticker on your doors that alerts emergency respondents that you’ve animals on the property (this also acts as a warning to would be thieves you’ve animals that’ll probably make noise) • Installing and using a deadbolt (either with a removable handle or a double cylinder) • If using a deadbolt look into installing a secondary deadbolt at head height or higher • Ensure the key is never left within the lock of deadbolt. • If you need to keep the deadbolt key or handle near the door, hang it above the door and out of reach or against a wall away from the door • Ensure the key can’t be grabbed by smashing through the door’s window • Invest in buying a ‘Lock Jaw’ (http://www.amazon.com/Lock-Jaw-Security-1001-Polished/dp/B000RZQAPM) for each and every deadbolt you own if you can’t remove the handle • When purchasing locks, look for bump-key protected locks • Always invest in buying a solid steel door and door frame • Don’t buy pre-hung • Always use piano hinges that go the length of the door, never use exterior hinges • When installing the door and/or door frame, ensure you use galvanized screws that are quite long and guaranteed not to bend or snap • Look into reinforcing the door jamb with steel plates (http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Homes-International-55724-Reinforcer/dp/B003P5KJJO) that run the length of the door, and, again, use galvanized screws that are long and guaranteed not to bend or snap • If you can’t reinforce the door jamb, at least reinforce the strike plate (http://www.amazon.com/MINTCRAFT-HSH-004BN-Security-Strike-Brushed/dp/B000UVR4BC/) • Look into installing individual alarms (http://www.amazon.com/Window-Door-Alarm-Kit-Pack/dp/B007RUGANC) on each door within your house and garage • Invest in buying a ‘Club’ (http://www.amazon.com/Door-Stopper-Resists-Force-Protect/dp/B00007E7LN) for each and every door within your house, including service doors and doors that enter an attached garage or similar building • Don’t buy and invest money in a door cane/bar (http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-265DCCSEN-Dual-Function-Security/dp/B0002YUX8I/) (goes under the handle). Most are easily bent and pushed through, but if you want to buy one make sure it’s very solid and is paired with the above • To go the extra mile, you can get two brackets and install them on either side of the door (again, galvanized screws that are both long and guaranteed to not bend or snap). Then lay a heavy and thick piece of wood or metal pipe across said brackets. This creates another layer that should help prevent kicked in or forced open doors. This can be painted and decorated to look more natural and match the home’s décor; however it’s advised for doors out of sight or rarely used, like side doors. • Always ensure to lock and properly secure all sliding doors, try using a cable or lock (http://www.amazon.com/Window-Door-Restrictor-Cable-Multiple/dp/B00UYDY3XS/) • Security lights (motion activated) should be installed above each door that leads to the outside • A security camera should be installed, be it fake or real, above each door that leads outside • The trim around the door should be covered, be it with siding or another form of covering • Bells or some other noise-making object hung where the door will hit or placed on the door itself • Place a “Do Not Disturb” sign on door and/or a “No Solicitor” sign on all doors or next to it • Even if not religious, have a religious item, statue or picture in sight if someone looks through the doors or their windows (can scare or cause guilt in some) • Keep all keys, documents and valuables away from doors • You’ll always have one unsecured door when you leave the house and no one’s home. Ensure the door you leave from is one in plain sight of the street and neighbors • Ensure all other doors are secured properly before leaving The windows: If a potential thief can’t use any door on your property, their next point of entry will most likely be the window if they haven’t decided to give up. Some will give up as the window will most likely cause more noise than going through the door whereas some others have prepared for just this case. • The money is worth the initial investment • All tips should be applied to any and all windows on your property • ADT or some other security sticker on all windows (ensure the company is real and does business in your area) • Ensuring all windows are closed and locked when away or not in use • Ensure the child protection safety latches are enabled • Never post or place NRA stickers on your windows (the stickers are magnets for gangs that are on the lookout for houses to steal guns from) • Never post or place political stickers on your windows (this, too, acts like a magnet for some troublesome people) • Place an emergency sticker on your windows that alerts emergency respondents that you’ve animals on the property (this also acts as a warning to would be thieves you’ve animals that’ll probably make noise) • Install security film (http://www.amazon.com/Security-Window-Film-Wide-Roll/dp/B004LDBPY2/) on all windows possible (look into tinted too) • Install or put up blackout curtains, especially ones that offer noise cancelation (prevents people from peeping in and/or listen in) • Look into a window bar or simply use a piece of PVC | WOOD | METAL | PIPE above all windows • Look into installing a window lock (http://www.amazon.com/Cardinal-Gates-Window-Warden-White/dp/B007PLZUUC/), if possible • Place bars on all basement windows • Look into installing individual alarms (http://www.amazon.com/Window-Door-Alarm-Kit-Pack/dp/B007RUGANC) on each window within your house and garage • Ensure all frames are thoroughly sealed and caulked, double check for possible flaws • Even if not religious, have a religious item, statue or picture in sight if someone looks through the windows (can scare or cause guilt in some) • Keep all keys, documents and valuables away from windows • Place ‘security hedges’ (thorny bushes) under windows or close to them, make sure they’re dense enough that someone can’t hide in them or by them • Basement windows should have a cap placed over them (those plastic domes) • If windows are older, replace them with double or triple pane • Windows that are never in use or pose a bigger threat, even with the above done, should be screwed shut (not nailed) The garage: Doors and windows aren’t the only point of entries. Many people, especially in higher class neighborhoods, tend to leave their garages completely unsecured. No one really pays much mind to the garage until it’s broken into. This is why you should be pro-active and secure your garage to further minimize your loss, especially if you’ve a garage attached to your house. • The money is worth the initial investment • All tips should be applied to any and all garages on your property • ADT or some other security sticker on all windows and doors (ensure the company is real and does business in your area) • Get a solid garage door, not a thin aluminum one. A solid steel or wooden garage door can help deter would be thieves • Ensure your garage door doesn’t have windows, if it does, secure or board over them • Limit the access points into your garage, board up windows if you don’t want or need them. • Ensure you’ve installed individual alarms (http://www.amazon.com/Window-Door-Alarm-Kit-Pack/dp/B007RUGANC) on all doors and windows, like suggested above • Ensure all service entrances have deadbolts, secondary deadbolts and bump-key proof locks • Ensure you always keep your garage clean and organized, this helps you see if anything is stolen or has been moved • Always park your vehicles in your garage. A car left out can suggest you’ve more than one car or are hardly home enough to use your garage • Zip-tie the emergency garage door release. Thieves and intruders can use a variety of means to release it and open your garage • Always close your garage door, even if you’re in there. An open garage door allows people to enter and scout around, possibly even allow access to your house. • Always invest in buying a solid steel service door and door frame • Don’t buy pre-hung • Always use piano hinges that go the length of the door, never use exterior hinges • When installing the door and\or door frame, ensure you use galvanized screws that are quite long and guaranteed not to bend or snap • Look into reinforcing the door jamb (http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Homes-International-55724-Reinforcer/dp/B003P5KJJO) with steel plates that run the length of the door, and, again, use galvanized screws that are long and guaranteed not to bend or snap • If you can’t reinforce the door jamb, at least reinforce the strike plate (http://www.amazon.com/MINTCRAFT-HSH-004BN-Security-Strike-Brushed/dp/B000UVR4BC/) • Always ensure the service door leading to the house can be locked only from the house and not the garage • Ensure all windows are closed and locked when away or not in use • Ensure the child protection safety latches are enabled • Install security film (http://www.amazon.com/Security-Window-Film-Wide-Roll/dp/B004LDBPY2/) on all windows possible (look into tinted too) • Install or put up blackout curtains, especially ones that offer noise cancelation • Look into a window bar or simply use a piece of PVC | WOOD | METAL | PIPE above all windows • Look into installing a window lock (http://www.amazon.com/Cardinal-Gates-Window-Warden-White/dp/B007PLZUUC/), if possible • Invest in locked cabinets, lockers and toolboxes to keep thieves out of your tools and belongings. This also prevents you from supplying them the tools to break in • Ensure all explosives, flammables and similar items are put away, locked and out of site. These items can be used to gain entrance in your home • Look into investing into a good bike lock or two, non-combination. Use these to secure tools and larger items to your walls or to weights of sorts to prevent theft or use against you • Ensure you’ve installed private drive, private property…etc signs around your garage • Security lights and cameras (real or fake) can also help deter would be thieves and intruders • Check your garage door’s tracks. If they allow it, you can secure your garage door further by placing a lock-bar or a simple steel coat hanger through the tracks to prevent the door from being forced Before we continue into the next chapter, we’d like to remind you that the above is simply a series of suggestions. Your needs may be quite different, and doing all the above would be pointless if you only need to do one to two of the options only. Always assess your security and privacy needs before starting any of the projects or suggestions above. Remember to also go the cost effective route and not the cheapest or most expensive – you don’t usually need titanium screws that are a foot long to secure your hardware. =============================================== Your Property, Your Rights We’re granted a lot of rights as to do what we wish with our property, but due to some laws and varying home or neighborhood associations (that could give Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany a run for their money) there exist some limitations. This is why we stated in a previous chapter on asking yourself several questions ad also investigating your local and state laws. It’s quite crucial you do this as legally as possible without voiding anything and bringing hell down upon your head. This will result in less security and privacy if you do so, which also will increase possible danger to you and yours. You also must realize that if all other possible points of entry are secured and locked tight, they’ll look for other possible points by gaining even more access to your property through your backyard or the side of your house to look and test for possible weaknesses. This is why you also need to doubly check your laws and such, for if you want to prevent them from stealing some prized plants (meth heads steal the strangest things) or decorations and ornaments... you must be on guard even with the law. Now, similar to OPSec, you’ll want to compartmentalize your property with the proper fencing. Everyone loves a wide, open yard until raccoons or neighbors begin inviting themselves to your expensive Jacuzzi. And, if you do build a fence, remember to always go to the legally allowed maximum height. You want to go with the legal material, too. Some places aren’t too keen on h iron fences topped with razor-wire and broken glasses. To make it simpler for you, we’re going to list the things you need to know about building a fence. Things to know for safety and legal purposes: • When picking the material, and if it’s wood, let it dry a day or two before construction • Let the wood dry, especially after construction, before applying any finished or varnishes on • Always buy your posts a little longer, as you always want to set and sink said posts quite deep to prevent sagging, movement and easily lifted posts • Ensure the hinges are sized correctly, no matter what • Ensure you “Step” the fence up or down, changing elevation, when dealing with slants and hills • Spaces and gaps from “stepping” can be covered with chicken wire or a lattice • The “nice side” faces toward the outside of your property (toward the neighbors) and not you • Always check your codes, some places will want your posts sunk deeper than two feet • Always have someone professionally check for lines and such before digging Things to do for privacy and security • Always build your fence the maximum, legal height and width • Check for clauses and codes that may prevent or allow you to put up a lattice on your fence (deters would be thieves, also can break and generate even more noise. Possibly leave DNA behind) • Always ensure the fence has at least two good locks • If legal in your area, and the fence is high enough, look into “anti-vandal” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-climb_paint) paint • If not violating anything, ensure to have visible signs that range from “no solicitors” to “Private property” and even those advertising the use of “Anti-climb paint” and that you have “Cameras in use” • If you own a dog, don’t use an “Attack dog” or “Guard dog” on property sign. Use a “Dog on property” sign to avoid potential lawsuits (two advertise a violent dog while the other simply states you own a dog) • Install bells or chimes on the fence and ensure it makes noise if jiggled or being opened • Ensure to have lights around or on top of your fence to help illuminate the area Your fence is all but one part of securing your property. You also need to ensure your yard is seen as clean. You can’t leave toys, belongings and miscellaneous items lying around. These will not only entice people to investigate your property, but also advertises what you may own or have on your property. You also need to keep your yard in shape, which isn’t to say you need a perfectly manicured lawn. Just keep it mowed, the hedges trimmed and weeds pull make people see that someone is there and keeping up on the property. Not much can be done outside of common sense; however you need to ensure you don’t advertise your political beliefs and party to the whole neighborhood and world. People are notoriously fickle individuals who’ll vandalize and steal property (http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/oct/9/romney-signs-defaced-excrement-virginia/) belonging to another simply because they don’t vote the same way or believe in the same things. And, on the upside, you also lessen hazards presented on your property or items that can be used to break into your house. Talking about hazards, people are quite curious; ensure you keep your yard smelling crisp and clean. If you have pets or kids, just keeping up on the lawn and putting your property away won’t matter much if something smells out of places. Hose down your sidewalks and pickup after Fluffy ASAP! It takes one concerned, elderly neighbor to have SWAT descend upon your house like flies toward Fluffy’s processed dinner. Take the 10 minutes and cleanup after your pets and kids. Better to be safe than sorry. And, to handle things more humanely, also looking into planting attractive plants and flowers on your property instead of putting up enticing ornaments and such than attract people like birds to a shine object. And, besides, decorating your property isn’t too bad of a thing. Shingled patios and pea-stone pebbled drives or walks generate noise and can spook would-be thieves due to the added noise. Also, a reminder: Always keep your part of the alley clean, too. It takes one pet carcass or some spilt red paint for the police to question you about the state of your garbage cans. It doesn’t hurt to bleach them out twice a month to prevent mold, mildew, bugs and whatever else might cause someone to question your garbage and recycling receptacles. =============================================== Your Home, Your Rules Not many people think that outside of doing the above that they’ve anything really left to do, however these people are wrong and probably will end up with their property broken into and items stolen. You’ve a bit more to do before you can feel as if your home is properly secured, and this chapter’s the fun on in our opinion. You see, as we stated, a criminal isn’t going strike during the night, but during the day when most people are at work. And, like we’ve stated before, the ones coming at night are amateurs, gang members and druggies (Meth heads will cause havoc). Those coming in at night will wreck your property; possibly even drive a car through your wall to get inside. These people aren’t going to hit a high end neighborhood with a few security guards or an active populace, though, and rarely will attempt it in desperation unless they have family or friends within the area—like vampires, they usually have to be invited into the area beforehand (possibly by a drug deal?). Your professional criminal or at least semi-intelligent one will strike when you’re at work. They’ll have spent several days learning your schedule and the schedules of your family, among other people in your area. They’ll look for weaknesses and easily overpowered individuals (remember the questions). They want to get in, out, and do so quietly. This is why the previous chapters recommended so much and basically suggested bells and chimes on your doors. You could also even use a motion detector in and around your property; however once they’re inside or feel confident enough it won’t matter. This is where it’s time to be a diabolical little devil. If you can afford it, do get an alarm system besides doing the above. They do work, although they shouldn’t be relied upon due to the fact that some companies do have criminals amongst their ranks. There’s also the fact that no alarm is foolproof. A cat or small dog could destroy censors, or bugs can cover them up or even get inside the sensors or cameras and wreck them. So, yes, get an alarm but never rely on them. And, just as an FYI, always sleep with your alarm set. You want them to go off instantly once the door or window has been opened, breached or broken. The noise will spook most would-be thieves into evacuating the scene instead of being taken in by the police. You also want to get not one but two dogs as most people think they can take on a big, mean looking dog. A good pairing is getting a small dog, as they’re usually prone to bark, and one nice sized big dog that look as if they could tear a person’s face. The reasoning behind the two dogs is quite simple: Companionship for you and each other, but also because one won’t likely shut up while the other begins to cave a would-be thief’s butt in while trying to flee the scene. Now, if you want to ruin someone’s night or day and really cause some undue stress and take a few years off someone’s life—get child safety locks. We’re not joking here. Seriously get yourself some child safety locks on everything you can. From Velcro “Safety bands” on your fridge to cabinet and drawer locks. Each and every possible container and appliance that may contain something of value or something a person could take should be locked by a child safety device, even the toilet. People, when breaking in, no matter how many times as we state it, want to get in and out. They want to basically get in and out. Noise, lights and visibility scare them away, so imagine what happens if they get in and can’t even open up a drawer without the trademark “KLLLLLCCHHHH” sound from Velcro or having to struggle with applying just the right amount of pressure to open up a drawer. Go the full nine yards and even do this to the garage, too, along with every outlet on your property having a child protection cap. You might as well put a protective case around your thermostat, too. Imagine the surprise when a thief has to traverse these potential time wasters alongside worrying about noise and lights. You also want not one but several safes and cabinets that lock. The reasoning behind this is that it causes one of those “too many choices” moments, yet also causes another time waster. They can’t just smash a safe as that, too, causes noise and picking the lock is going take awhile. Guns, jewelry, small and portable electronics, documents and what have you should always have a place and be within that place before you leave. A good, solid filing cabinet with locks is another good idea. Keeping your house clean is also very important as this hinders would-be thieves and any potential tools they can use to break into things. This also makes it look like that you either just stepped out or have a maid service to clean your property. Some people will leave simply due to the fact that you could be home any second and just possibly stepped out for a smoke or some more cleaners. This is also why it’s important to keep your house and not just your property smelling nice. If someone smells something off or as stale, they might see that you’ve been gone for awhile or get curious enough as to call the authorities on you for an off smell. Another good point is keeping something on, when away, to simulate conversation or noise like a radio or a TV. Some of your newer TVs do allow people to set timers to turn the TV on when a specific show is on or time is met. Getting a clapper for lamps is also a good way to help keep people off guard when they’re unsure someone’s home or not. You also want to buy timers for your radio, as when the TV goes off, having your radio go on simulates that someone may be in the house. Basically, we’re simply stating that nothing is 100% safe and will prevent thieves and criminals from breaking into your home, hence the constant layering of protection and safety. You need to ensure your house’s and property’s entry points aren’t only secured, visible and monitored by a camera and lit up whenever someone comes near, you also want the same with your fence. You also need to ensure your home and your belongings are secured and safe and locked up nicely; too, to ensure people just can’t smash into your house and run out with its goodies. And, before we close this chapter, we’d just like to remind people that they need to ensure expensive items that can’t be stored in a safe, like a TV or stereo, are properly secured to a wall or their stand--a pain for you, but doubly so for others wanting your stuff. =============================================== Afterword As mentioned in the above, it’s really just layering and being on guard. You can lock everything up and ensure you’ve the proper insurance (home owners…etc), however if someone wants it they’ll try to get into your house and property and take it. You need to be aware of everything around you and realize the biggest threat to your stuff is you. Remember OPSec and compartmentalization for your family and home: • Don’t advertise your guns or belongings • Always lock everything up and turn off what isn’t needed • Keep a light on and something that makes noise • Set your washer or dryer to turn on a few minutes after you leave (to simulate activity) • Never leave your house without say “goodbye” to someone (simulates activity and occupancy) • Befriend trustworthy neighbors (they’ll keep an eye on you and your property) • Never announce when leaving or going on vacation (especially not on social media) • Replace your mailbox with a locking one • Asking to have the post office hold your mail while away • Having friends or family (that you trust) to watch your home and property while you’re gone (or at least to stop by, walk around and check things once a day) • Always keep your property and house clean and smelling nice • Keep your property and home organized • Put your belongings away • Lockup and store things away when not in use • Always password protect everything you can • Etch your name, phone number and address into electronics and attach labels inside of items that may get taken • Take pictures and catalogue everything of value and worth, even if sentimental, and keep a physical album with up-to-date descriptions and serial numbers in your safe or a safety deposit box • Be aware of who you're friends with • Remove your house and property from online maps (Check the Paranoid’s Bible PDF for more information) • Anchor TVs, monitors, and other similar items to furniture or floors • Don't flaunt expensive things, valuables...etc • Don't gloat about items of value or rarity • Don't advertise your recent purchases (always destroy, break down...etc packaging and throw a bit at a time) • Always use a cell to call police, thieves can and have tapped landlines or gotten access to your phone before or during break-ins • Don't throw away receipts or important documents (shred or burn) • Tell kids never to open doors and/or talk to strangers • Invest in bike locks, cable locks and other similar items to secure tools and work benches (even if locked before) to cement or other similar weights • Remind kids to never tell if you're not there or asleep • Don't leave drills, ladders...etc laying around (helps break into your house) • If ordering a taxi, get it on the corner of your block • If being dropped off by a taxi, get dropped off at the corner or a nearby shop/business • Keep your vehicles empty and in the garage • Don’t advertise political parties or beliefs on your car • Don’t use “Family stickers” as these can be used to gather info on you • Just don’t place anything on your car outside of permits and security items • Keep drapes closed, but if opened keep expensive items out of sight • Wasp/bear or mace will ruin a person's night if sprayed in the face • Make copies of all your important documents, including copies of all your credit cards (store in safe or safety deposit box) • And remember: You can do everything correctly and to the letter of the law, yet people will still try to find fault with your actions. Again, as we stated numerous times: You can’t prevent all break-ins, only lessen your loss. We hope this helps you and your family stay safe and keep your home and property safe.

6'1 , 25 y/o male, spent the majority of the past 4 years dropping from 430lbs to a current 198lbs. The weight loss has left me with large amounts of sagging skin on my inner thighs, pelvis, abdomen, chest and upper arms.
