Post-Conference thoughts from Alma 33
One of the things I found myself declaring in the heat of the final talk from this last conference was that we need to make our own spaces. If church leadership is unwilling to accept queer people, we have to find our own ways to lift each other up and connect to Him.
Today I decided to read out of Alma on a vague prompting and found myself in Alma 33. You may want to read it yourself but here's what stuck out to me.
Alma 33 comes after 32's oft-quoted chapter on faith being like a seed which must be nurtured. Alma is talking to the poor among the Zoramites, and after having received instruction on how to grow their faith, they asked how they could exercise their faith -- given that they had been cast out of their synagogues, the very places of worship which they had helped build.
"…Behold, ye have said that ye could not worship God because ye are cast out of your synagogues. But behold, I say unto you, if ye suppose that ye cannot worship God, …ye ought to search the scriptures…
"For [Zenos] said: Thou art merciful, O God, for thou hast heard my prayer, even when I was in the wilderness … and thou wast merciful unto me when I did cry unto thee in my field; …And when I did turn unto my closet, O Lord, and prayed unto thee, thou didst hear me.
"Yea, thou art merciful unto thy children when they cry unto thee, to be heard of thee and not of men… I will cry unto the in all mine afflictions, …for thou has turned thy judgments away from thee, because of thy Son."
---
I don't have specific ways to follow this advice, but it's my hope that we can make our own places of shelter in the wilderness and gather together where we can. For some people, that might be in their local wards. For many of us that has meant a break from attendance, or potentially permanent leave from the faith community in which we grew up.
(Brief vent: I personally have not felt a great desire to return to church knowing that the people around me also seeking to follow Jesus might be seeking to persecute and otherize queer people. I have a hard time worshipping in the same church as a person I know who is seeking to "eliminate transgenderism" and sees no conflict between this and Jesus' teachings. I don't want to go to a place where I might be called on to debate queer people's existence when I can barely stand up for or conceptualize my own gender identity. But I miss the community that comes from sharing thoughts on how we can be better people and help others.)
Would love to hear y'all's thoughts on how we move forward.

Psalms chapter 77
1 (To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph.) I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
7 Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8 Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
10 And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
11 I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
17 The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. the years of the right hand of the most High.

Lord, have mercy upon me, have mercy upon me. All the night long I am troubled with evil thoughts, and in the daytime my comfort is fleeting. I have lived before thee in boundless sin; my greed knows no end. I have squandered the goods of my father and mother, and have eaten myself full. Do not the sick and weary lay in the street corners and beg? How many of them besought me, that I should give them from what I have? Yea, it is even thine own voice which calleth out to me, Spare us some money, and we shall eat another day. O how vain is my faith, even when I called daily upon thy Name, how vain it was, when I heard not thy voice. I said in my heart, If I call him not, he is not here. Demons surround me constantly, to command me to renounce thee. Did I not renounce thee already, when I confessed thee with my mouth, and betrayed thee in my works? I put my trust in my works, and forgot thee; so I was in the time of my apostasy. Betimes I mocked thee with my mouth and in my heart, in the days before I saw thee with mine eyes. When yet I saw thee, I confessed thee with my tongue, but changed not my ways, and walk still in wickedness. Lord, thy mercy is endless, and thy graces have been shewed to me all my life. In all time of my trouble thou hast delivered me, and in no wise shalt thou cast me again away from thee. Search the thou uttermost corners of my heart, find thou all trace of unbelief, and root it out, O Lord. My years have worn me down, but they are as nothing in thy sight, for my life is but a moment in thy sight. O that I were as thy servants in the lands over the sea, who are daily subdued and trodden down under evil feet! Would to God that I were taken captive by the malefactors, and killed! Take thou this life of mine, smite me with thine unbearable might, and bring thou me to thee straightway; make no long tarrying, but take me into thine arms again. Strengthen thou my soul, that in sorrow I seek thee; yea, even when I am in the mire, I will lift up mine arms unto thee.

“The Book of Lamentations is an acrostic (i.e., alphabetical) poem that begins with the Hebrew letter Aleph (א) in the word "eichah" (אֵיכָה), which also marks the Hebrew name of the book. "How (eichah) lonely sits the city that once was full of people!" (Lam. 1:1). The sages note that this word "how" (i.e., eichah) could also be read as "where are you?" (i.e., ayeka: אַיֶּכָּה), God's first word spoken to Adam after he broke covenant in the Garden (Gen. 3:9).
Note that God's question is often our own: "Where are you? Where are you, God? Are you here, in the midst of this tedious moment? Do you know my loneliness, my ache for love? Do you understand the troubles of my heart?" And yet how many people have faith that God’s call is one of comfort and restoration? God uses our loneliness ("how lonely...") to search our hearts, asking each of us, ayeka – "Where are you?" Return to Me. "Why have you turned away from me and chosen a state of exile?" Our haunting sense of God’s absence impels us to seek for him... God awaits our only possible response, "Hashivenu!" -- an imperative (urgent appeal) for the grace to repent: "Turn us back to yourself, O LORD, so that we may return to you; renew our days as of old" (Lam. 5:21).
Our response to the questioning love of the LORD is called teshuvah (“turning [shuv] to God”). Teshuvah is an “answer” to a shelah, or a question. God’s love for us is the question, and our teshuvah – our turning of the heart toward Him – is the answer. As Jeremiah confessed in the hour of great trouble: "I called upon thy name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit; Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.”
Shabbat Shalom chaverim!”

[ Hebrew for Christians ]
“I called on Your name, O Lord, out of the depths of the Pit. You heard my plea: “Do not ignore my cry for relief.” You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.”” Lamentations‬ ‭3‬:‭55‬-‭57‬

Daily Devotionals for November 21, 2023 Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 28:19-20 (KJV): 19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. 20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. Proverbs 28:19-20 (AMP): 19 He who cultivates his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless people and pursuits will have poverty enough. 20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich (at any cost) shall not go unpunished.
Thought for the Day
Honest work will always be rewarded, while those who scheme to get wealth will not go unpunished. Gambling is one of the oldest addictions in the world. Like alcoholism and drug addiction, compulsive gambling drains national and personal economies. Families are the ones who suffer the most. Many people feel gambling is an enjoyable pastime, and even some Christians support lotteries, horse racing, and casinos. Video poker has become so popular it is referred to as "the crack cocaine" of gambling. However, Scripture is clear that it is a snare that can lead to poverty. It is the ultimate get-rich-quick scheme, and Christians should pay attention to the Biblical instruction regarding it.
Anyone attempting to gain money at someone else's certain loss is not practicing Christian principles. A casino preys on the weakness of people. Gambling is contrary to the principles of working, saving, and giving. Gamblers ignore discipline and accountability for their spending. To many, gambling is a scheme to escape work. Some do not realize the gravity of their sin, justifying it because their present income does not meet their needs. God desires these persons to look to Him to meet their needs. He will give a plan for becoming debt-free if they seek Him and search out His economic principles in the Bible. The Lord can bring deliverance to those caught in the web of compulsive gambling. He will break the bondage of all who call upon Him.
Doing an honest day's work is the way to earn a living. Faithfulness to a job brings its reward. God's blessing upon honest labor goes beyond any paycheck. No man can buy peace of mind, health, protection, or joy in the Holy Spirit.
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and we can certainly carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness" (1 Timothy 6:6-11).
Prayer Devotional for the Day Dear heavenly Father, thank you for Your many blessings and help me to be content with Your daily provision in my life. Deliver me from all worry and anxiety. Lord, help those who have fallen into the snare of gambling. Deliver them and set them free so that they will be able to trust You for their needs. May we all be content with Your daily provisions. Thank You for Your wonderful gifts of love, joy, and peace, which cannot be purchased with any amount of money. I am most grateful. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen. From: Steven P. Judges
Chapter 5
1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying, 2 Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. 3 Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel. 4 LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water. 5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel. 6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways. 7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel. 8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? 9 My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye the LORD. 10 Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.
11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates. 12 Awake, awake, Deborah: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam. 13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty. 14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer. 15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart. 16 Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart. 17 Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches. 18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field. 19 The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money. 20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
21 The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength. 22 Then were the horsehoofs broken by the means of the pransings, the pransings of their mighty ones. 23 Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty. 24 Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent. 25 He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. 26 She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples. 27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead. 28 The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots? 29 Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself, 30 Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colours, a prey of divers colours of needlework, of divers colours of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil? 31 So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

2 Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is no one to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her;  they have become her enemies. 3 After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile. She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place. All who pursue her have overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed festivals. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish.
5 Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. The Lord has brought her grief, because of her many sins. Her children have gone into exile, captive before the foe. 6 All the splendor has departed from Daughter Zion. Her princes are like deer that find no pasture; in weakness they have fled before the pursuer. 7 In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no one to help her. Her enemies looked at her and laughed at her destruction.
Jerusalem has sinned greatly and so has become unclean. All who honored her despise her, for they have all seen her naked; she herself groans and turns away. 9 Her filthiness clung to her skirts; she did not consider her future. Her fall was astounding; there was none to comfort her.
“Look, Lord, on my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed.” 10 The enemy laid hands on all her treasures; she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary— those you had forbidden to enter your assembly. 11 All her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive.
“Look, Lord, and consider, for I am despised.” 12 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering that was inflicted on me, that the Lord brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?
Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
1 Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? 3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God? 4 Now when I think thereupon, I pour out my heart by myself; for I went with the multitude, and brought them forth into the house of God; 5 In the voice of praise and thanksgiving, among such as keep holy-day. 6 Why art thou so full of heaviness, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?
42 They shall cry, but there shall be none to help them; yea, even unto the LORD shall they cry, but he shall not hear them.
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
O GOD, wherefore art thou absent from us so long? why is thy wrath so hot against the sheep of thy pasture? 2 O think upon thy congregation, whom thou hast purchased, and redeemed of old. 3 Think upon the tribe of thine inheritance, and Mount Sion, wherein thou hast dwelt. 4 Lift up thy feet, that thou mayest utterly destroy every enemy, which hath done evil in thy sanctuary. 5 Thine adversaries roar in the midst of thy congregations, and set up their banners for tokens. 6 He that hewed timber afore out of the thick trees, was known to bring it to an excellent work. 7 But now they break down all the carved work thereof with axes and hammers. 8 They have set fire upon thy holy places, and have defiled the dwelling-place of thy Name, even unto the ground. 9 Yea, they said in their hearts, Let us make havoc of them altogether: thus have they burnt up all the houses of God in the land. 10 We see not our tokens; there is not one prophet more; no, not one is there among us, that understandeth any more. 11 O God, how long shall the adversary do this dishonour? shall the enemy blaspheme thy Name for ever? 12 Why withdrawest thou thy hand? why pluckest thou not thy right hand out of thy bosom to consume the enemy?

January 18 Morning “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” — Heb_4:9 How different will be the state of the believer in heaven from what it is here! Here he is born to toil and suffer weariness, but in the land of the immortal, fatigue is never known. Anxious to serve his Master, he finds his strength unequal to his zeal: his constant cry is, “Help me to serve thee, O my God.” If he be thoroughly active, he will have much labour; not too much for his will, but more than enough for his power, so that he will cry out, “I am not wearied of the labour, but I am wearied in it.” Ah! Christian, the hot day of weariness lasts not for ever; the sun is nearing the horizon; it shall rise again with a brighter day than thou hast ever seen upon a land where they serve God day and night, and yet rest from their labours. Here, rest is but partial, there, it is perfect. Here, the Christian is always unsettled; he feels that he has not yet attained. There, all are at rest; they have attained the summit of the mountain; they have ascended to the bosom of their God. Higher they cannot go. Ah, toil-worn labourer, only think when thou shalt rest for ever! Canst thou conceive it? It is a rest eternal; a rest that “remaineth.” Here, my best joys bear “mortal” on their brow; my fair flowers fade; my dainty cups are drained to dregs; my sweetest birds fall before Death’s arrows; my most pleasant days are shadowed into nights; and the flood-tides of my bliss subside into ebbs of sorrow; but there, everything is immortal; the harp abides unrusted, the crown unwithered, the eye undimmed, the voice unfaltering, the heart unwavering, and the immortal being is wholly absorbed in infinite delight. Happy day! happy! when mortality shall be swallowed up of life, and the Eternal Sabbath shall begin. Evening “He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” — Luk_24:27 The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had a most profitable journey. Their companion and teacher was the best of tutors; the interpreter one of a thousand, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The Lord Jesus condescended to become a preacher of the gospel, and he was not ashamed to exercise his calling before an audience of two persons, neither does he now refuse to become the teacher of even one. Let us court the company of so excellent an Instructor, for till he is made unto us wisdom we shall never be wise unto salvation. This unrivalled tutor used as his class-book the best of books. Although able to reveal fresh truth, he preferred to expound the old. He knew by his omniscience what was the most instructive way of teaching, and by turning at once to Moses and the prophets, he showed us that the surest road to wisdom is not speculation, reasoning, or reading human books, but meditation upon the Word of God. The readiest way to be spiritually rich in heavenly knowledge is to dig in this mine of diamonds, to gather pearls from this heavenly sea. When Jesus himself sought to enrich others, he wrought in the quarry of Holy Scripture. The favoured pair were led to consider the best of subjects, for Jesus spake of Jesus, and expounded the things concerning himself. Here the diamond cut the diamond, and what could be more admirable? The Master of the House unlocked his own doors, conducted the guests to his table, and placed his own dainties upon it. He who hid the treasure in the field himself guided the searchers to it. Our Lord would naturally discourse upon the sweetest of topics, and he could find none sweeter than his own person and work: with an eye to these we should always search the Word. O for grace to study the Bible with Jesus as both our teacher and our lesson!

Psalms chapter 44
1 (To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.) We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

Only the best Psalm ever
Domine, probasti. God's special providence over his servants.
1 Lord, thou hast proved me, and known me:  2 Thou hast known my sitting down, and my rising up.  3 Thou hast understood my thoughts afar off: my path and my line thou hast searched out.  4 And thou hast foreseen all my ways: for there is no speech in my tongue.  5 Behold, O Lord, thou hast known all things, the last and those of old: thou hast formed me, and hast laid thy hand upon me.
[4] "There is no speech": Viz., unknown to thee: or when there is no speech in my tongue; yet my whole interior and my most secret thoughts are known to thee.
6 Thy knowledge is become wonderful to me: it is high, and I cannot reach to it.  7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy face?  8 If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present.  9 If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:  10 Even there also shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: and night shall be my light in my pleasures.  12 But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light as day: the darkness thereof, and the light thereof are alike to thee.  13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother's womb.  14 I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well.  15 My bone is not hidden from thee, which thou hast made in secret: and my substance in the lower parts of the earth.
16 Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written: days shall be formed, and no one in them.  17 But to me thy friends, O God, are made exceedingly honourable: their principality is exceedingly strengthened.  18 I will number them, and they shall be multiplied above the sand: I rose up and am still with thee.  19 If thou wilt kill the wicked, O God: ye men of blood, depart from me:  20 Because you say in thought: They shall receive thy cities in vain.
[20] "Because you say in thought": Depart from me, you wicked, who plot against the servants of God, and think to cast them out of the cities of their habitation; as if they have received them in vain, and to no purpose.
21 Have I not hated them, O Lord, that hated thee: and pine away because of thy enemies?  22 I have hated them with a perfect hatred: and they are become enemies to me.  23 Prove me, O God, and know my heart: examine me, and know my paths.  24 And see if there be in me the way of iniquity: and lead me in the eternal way.
[22] "I have hated them": Not with an hatred of malice, but a zeal for the observance of God's commandments; which he saw were despised by the wicked, who are to be considered enemies to God.
In most Bibles, it's Psalm 139. This is from Douay-Rheims, and it's Psalm 138. I like the elegance of the Douay-Rheims in this psalm. It's richer than KJV, and KJV is hard to beat.
Annotations are indented.
