fortunately, ghostbusters; afterlife and ghostbusters; frozen empire are the best remakes of an intellectual property ever.
you cannot argue against me on this one. ghostbusters itself is already campy and cheesy and fucking great, obviously. it’s the perfect series for a 40 yrs later sequel.
it has the perfect amount of fan service (which i eat up every time), classic moments that i adore (oh no! i can’t hold the proton pack straight; the whole team has to grab on and help me!), and random new world lore just for the sake of lore (well the god wants to end humanity because he wants to)
plus they gave mckenna grace a lesbian ghost lover, what’s not to love

Im not gonna lie, I'm in love with McKenna Grace so happy with the ghostbusters movies. I don't really care about how they're a cash grab or purely working off nostalgia. I don't care about how it's full of nepotism babies and Paul Rudd (for some reason?) and I don't care about how it's not the same as the original movie and its sequel. Obviously not, this isn't the 80s. The effects are gonna look a little more HD, making the old ones seem cheesy. Even my aunts boyfriend thought that it wasn't as good because it wasn't as scary. I had to remind him that he watched the first two movies when he was 6 and they were reruns. I wasn't even that scared of the og ghostbusters when I was little cause it was compared to movies like idk the ring and Scooby Doo(2002) (like idk, point is, eggs cooking on counter tops aren't that freighting)
There are two movie franchises that I will watch no matter what. Jurassic Park/ World and Ghostbusters. Obviously I have a major bias for these movies but I think people will take their honorary movie critic certificate and act like they know the pinnacle of film because they saw the Godfather at 16. (Probably haven't even seen Alice (1988)) Obviously these movies are working off nostalgia bait but for what it is I'd watch both Afterlife and Frozen Empire again and again. Sorry for the schpeel I just want more fanfiction about Phoebe and that Ghost Girl

Mckenna Grace and Xochitl Gomez would make a good casting choice for a live action version of ElsaMaren if Mckenna wore high heels to make herself a few inches taller.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously it would be better to get actresses with Lapponian descent, but Mckenna Grace and Xochitl Gomez I still think it's a good casting.

Share some stalking heroes 👀
HAPPY TO.
Historical:
Obviously, Valentine Napier from Elizabeth Hoyt's Duke of Sin, He Who Lives in Walls.
Mick Trewlove does a bit of stalking when he's staking out how to steal Aslyn (in order to ruin his half-brother's life) in Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath.
Magnus literally hunts Melissa down like a dog in S.M. LaViolette's Melissa and The Vicar (after she leaves him).
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale has an EXTREMELY stalkery, villainous hero and I love the degree to which he's just a creep lol. Like, the heroine is all "... how does he know these things" and the answer is "baby girl, he's been watching you sleep probably". TW: the first encounter is noncon (forced marriage consummation). Kinsale is very true to 14th century approaches to consent, but Elena does very much take the reins in the rest of it.
In a different way, the preceding novel (set 10 years before) For My Lady's Heart is also a stalkery hero book. The hero is a knight whose wife left him to join a convent (lmao) and when he's dropping her off there he sees this beautiful (married) princess who notices that he's attracted to her and calls him out... but when he unexpectedly has to give up ALL his money in order to commit his wife to the order--a thing he doesn't want to do!--the princess does him a solid and gives him some cash to get on his feet. And as a result, he becomes obsessed with her, pledges himself to her, and serves from afar in her name for like. 13 years. Then they finally meet again and it turns out she's kind of a bitch! (In the best way.)
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets by Grace Callaway, of course, has Cull, who watches Pippa while she's out doing her vigilante shit and is like, ready to run interference and who knows maybe smell her hair.
Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt of course has the truly insane and stalkery Maximus. Like Valentine, he refuses to call his heroine by her actual name lmao.
The Wolf and The Widlflower by Stacy Reid. Wolf Duke Duke of Wolverton is obviously a duke who lived with wolves for years, and after he realizes that his new shrink, a young man, is actually a woman in disguise (a fact he realizes when he SMELLS. HER. WOMANLY. SCENT. IYKWIM.) he's determined to catch her out lol.
Hotel of Secrets by Diana Biller has a hero who's admittedly a literal spy, but he does start lowkey stalking the heroine because he feels CRIME MAY BE AFOOT. And then he walks in on her... doing things alone.... and he goes "don't stop" and I lost my mind.
Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas gives me this vibe because McKenna is so focused on revenge against Aline that it basically turns into this obsession with everything about her and what it takes to break her down. Like, McKenna gives strong murder vibes and I do find it hot.
The Dragon and The Pearl by Jeannie Lin gives me this vibe because he's like... keeping her captive for political reasons but you can literally see on the page when it starts to shift from politics to obsession lol.
Contemporary-ish:
Mafia Madman by Mila Finelli. I mean, Enzo watches Gia through security cameras while keeping her in a cage after setting up a faked death by bombing a bar after he buys in an Aperol spritz. Peak stalking.
Mafia Target--the book after Mafia Madman, m/m assassin/target... Alessio is literally stalking Giulio for months before they actually meet and he's obsessed with him and it's AMAZING.
All of Kresley Cole's Gamemaker books involve stalking but The Player is maybe the most intensely stalkery book of all time. I can't even tell you how. That would give it away. Trust and believe. This is a STALKER.
Sierra Simone writes some very possessive heroes. Mark from her Lyonesse series, though (starting with Salt in the Wound) gives strong stalker vibes. Partly because he clearly knows way more about Tristan and Isolde than either of them realize and has known it for a while lol. Also, he literally skulks around ruining people's lives, so. That's just WHO HE IS. And I do love it.
Paranormal:
Just shouting out the fact that every single IAD hero is a stalker, but special notes for Lothaire of Lothaire (on EVERY LEVEL, follows Ellie around for years before the book even begins, turns invisible to follow her around in his apartment, watches her from the shadows, has to carry her lingerie around in his pocket so he can deeply inhale it to cope); Cade from Dark Desires after Dusk (followed Holly around for years before the book began... again lmao); Trehan from Shadow's Claim (the MISTS!!!!).
Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison has a heroine who steals a penny from a dragon shifter's lair, and he literally hunts her down like a dog lmao.

———————
July 4ths weekend was finally here a very celebratory date for some to say the most. But for a lot of people, it wasn’t much of a celebration, it reminded them of the nightmares they had to encounter at nights. That was the case for the Halstead family, Jay had served in the rangers almost 11 years ago, to this day he still struggled. He had to leave you and his family for a whole year in his last deployment, each day after he came home showed he was trying his best for his family. He still had some ptsd, minimum, but still there hence why you were currently on Jay’s truck on your way to the family cabin. You had planned to have some family time in a remote place where you could share and shelter your husband and spend time with your family.
The road trip had just started, it was Friday, July 3rd afternoon, you planned to get there by midnight at most. Why so late? Obviously, it had to be this late at noon because your husband had worked today and so did your brother-in-law. So, it was the perfect timing to pack bags and head there before the 4th of July itself.
“So, mom when was the last time you came to this place?” your son William Halstead -Liam for short- asked. And yes, you had named him after your brother-in-law much to your husbands dismay -Will doesn’t need his ego raised hon- those were the words your husband so kindly tried to persuade you with, safe to say they didn’t work.
“Well, it was right before you were born. So that would mean almost 12 years” you said squinting your eyes at the realization of it. Jay on the other hand whistled under his breath before looking at you with raised eyebrows. It had been that long? It felt like yesterday.
“We need go more often” Jay said while keeping his eyes on the road, to which you hummed before going back to your book. Ever so often he glanced back lightly to make sure his brother’s car was still following him. You followed his eyesight and chuckled quietly.
“They’re fine baby” you said quietly, reaching your hand to grasp his, giving a light squeeze.
“I know” Jay said looking between you and the road, making you shake your head amused by his behavior. Well, you had to hand it to him, Will was not the best of drivers and he had precious cargo with him.
“Dad is it true that if you use too much conditioner you can turn blind?” Liam asked breaking the silence, this made both you and Jay share a look, squinting your eyes at the comment, what the hell were they teaching him at school.
“Well, tha- first of all who told you that?” you asked turning slightly to look at your son, a confused look on your face.
“Uncle Adam” Liam said, trying to hide his amusement. Even Liam knew his uncle was bullshitting him, but he just wanted to spice this road trip even if it was at his uncle’s expenses.
“Of course, he did. I’m going to kill that asshole” “Jay Halstead” you exclaimed, Jay raising one of his hands in surrender while Liam laughed. There was something about Liam’s laugh, it was contagious and the definition of joyous. Jay always said that he got the best of you, but in some aspects, you knew Liam was Jay’s spirit animal.
“He is” Jay defended himself. Making you sigh,
“Yeah, he is” you said giving in, knowing he was right. Adam was the definition of a train wreck mixed with a man-child. Sometimes you even thought that he was dropped as a baby.
“So. Why are we like taking a road trip to this cabin?- Dad are you secretly a serial killer?” Liam said raising an eyebrow accusing his father.
“Woah god! Wh- no!” Liam was a curious kid.
“What. Just stating the facts” Liam shrugged his shoulders, you could basically hear the smirk on those words. Oh, that smirk you knew where he got it from, and it was coming to bite you in the ass. You took charge in answering the question.
“Well to answer your question Mr. I’m stating the facts. We are basically taking this trip because…your dad…well- he’s afraid of fireworks” you muttered, pursing your lips and trying to not laugh, hearing Liam’s giggles.
“What. I am not!” Jay defended himself, hands going everywhere as he tried to talk.
“Oh, you so are dad” Liam continued to tease his father, making Jay shake his head with a slight smirk on his lips. Turning to you he raised one eyebrow, an amused look on his face before pointing a finger at you.
“You see what you do” “Me!” “Yeah you! I love how my wife and son plot and make fun of me during this lovely, forced road trip” you both argued between laughs.
Unknown to you Liam was looking at both of you with a smile on his face. He loved his parents and how you both could show your kids how love should look like. That’s something you both agreed when you found out you were pregnant. To always have a healthy relationship and teach them what healthy love looked like. Liam knew the real reason for the trip but he wasn’t about to put his dad on the spot, he knew how much his dad struggled with his ptsd. The walls at home were thin, which let Liam hear how his dad would pant for air after a nightmare and how you both would walk out to the backyard porch to talk.
Just then Jay’s phone rang, Will’s name popping on the screen of the truck. Jay answered it at the second ring not wasting any time. From the other side of the line two voices could be heard,
“Father of mine. Could you tell your brother to not drive like a maniac” you daughter Hazel Halstead -Elle for short- voiced through the speakers, making you all giggle.
“I’m not driving like a maniac Elle. It’s called defensive driving” Will argued back, making you roll your eyes.
“Will. We all know it’s bad driving” you argued back, hearing as Elle and Will started arguing in his car about his awful driving skills.
“Alright. Alright! Children can you behave!” Jay interjected in his dad voice, making the line go silent. You glanced at him hiding your laugh with a cough. The line was silent for a couple of minutes before it was broken.
“Elle dad’s afraid of fireworks” Liam exclaimed. A gasp was heard from the car, while a groan was heard from yours.
“I knew it!” she said between giggles.
“Elle I’m not! Don’t listen to your brother” Jay exclaimed back at his daughter who was laughing.
“Oh, you so are dad” she exclaimed back, voicing the exact same words your son had said a couple of minutes ago. -I guess twins think alike- you thought, there was no arguing that. To this Jay groaned,
“Will, can you just drive safely please. You have precious cargo aka my daughter in your car. Don’t make me pull you over for child endangerment” Jay said pinching the bridge of his nose.
“I am driving safely” “The hell you are. I have come close to death like three times dad” Elle argued back to her uncle’s answer.
“Oh god give me strength. This is going to be a long weekend” you muttered under your breath, to which Jay mouthed ‘It was your idea’ with eyes wide in an accusatory manner. This made your mouth drop while squinting your eyes at him -how dare he- you thought.
“It’s alright. I’ll give her some sleeping pills, so she doesn’t talk for the rest for the trip” Will’s comment was met with your daughters gasp,
“Dad did you hea-” Jay reached over to the screen, cutting the phone call, before sighing.
“Well, that was awkward” Liam commented, making you and your husband close your eyes for a moment taking a deep breath. Indeed, it was going to be a long weekend.
It had been an hour since Liam fell asleep, silence surrounding the truck, it was already dark outside. You were looking out of the window into the woodsy view when you felt a hand slip into yours. This made you turn towards your husband who was stealing glances at you with a sweet smile on his face.
“You alright babe?” you asked smiling slightly towards him, squeezing his hand.
“All good. Just thankful” with that he raised your interwind hands to kiss the back of yours this made you move slightly towards him leaning in for a loving kiss, Jay smiling into the kiss before pulling away and turning his gaze back on the road. You leaned your head on his shoulder, which made Jay sighed in content; it would be a long weekend, but it was going to be in the best way possible.

Ooooh, this one’s fun!! Thanks a bunch for the ask, Greta!! <3
Tumblr media
NAME: Ariadne “Ari” Jackson.
LOVE INTEREST: Annabeth Chase.
SUMMARY: Right along with her twin brother, Ari was used to being “the weird kid” at every school she went to. With their shared ADHD, Percy’s wild imagination and talent for impulsive actions that got him in trouble, and Ari’s autism and obsession with Greek history and myths, the Jackson siblings were almost destined to be the outcasts in any class, very rarely making friends and only having each other and their mom to truly lean on. And when they wind up getting kicked out of yet another school because Percy supposedly pushed a bully into a fountain - which he didn’t, really, Ari was looking right at him when it had happened - Ari imagines it’s going to be the same as always: spend a little while at home with her mom and her crappy stepdad, go on their cabin trip like every year, then head on to the next school and resume the routine all over again. Only, that is not at all what happens - instead, in the course of about a week, Ari learns that she and Percy are the children of an actual Greek god, her mom sort-of dies in front of her while her brother kills a Minotaur, is told that their uncle somehow thinks they’ve stolen his prized possession and is ready to start a war because of it, and has to set off on a quest to find that prized possession with her brother and a very cute girl who doesn’t seem to like her or Percy very much. Oh, and she also learns that Percy’s best friend is apparently some kind of goat creature, which is… she doesn’t quite know what to make of that.
OTHER INFO:
Named after Ariadne of Theseus and the labyrinth fame.
A little baby lesbian!
Also the AuDHD rep we all deserve; her special interest is mainly Greek mythology, but she also really loves embroidery and sewing and her jackets and backpack are covered with patches she did herself. She also gets really into marine biology after learning she’s Poseidon’s daughter.
The braincell of her and Percy’s sibling duo most of the time; she’s a lot quieter and more observant than him, and her autism compounded with her ADHD tends to make her less impulsive, although she’s very supportive of all the spiteful stuff he does to the gods.
Obviously she and Annabeth don’t get together for a while, but Ari pretty much falls head over heels for her the second they meet and they’re an adorable badass couple when they do get together.
send me a fandom and a faceclaim/love interest and i’ll make an oc!!

I watched Frozen Empire yesterday. It was an OK movie, but then again, my expectations were really low.
I loved some things about it and hated others.
Seeing the ogs again was wonderful (I actually thought they would have an even smaller part in this one!) , and Janine joining them was the cherry on top!
They really pulled at your nostalgic heartstrings! Lots of references to the original films!
But... I didn't care for the new characters and I especially disliked that ghost girl... too annoying for my taste!
Trevor was absurdly underused again, which is terrible because he has SO MUCH potential (I like Finn Wolfhard as an actor!)!
And the worst thing... what the fuck have they done to Phoebe? She acted stupid in this one! She went from being basically the smartest one in Afterlife to the stupidest one in FE! Not to mention her personality! She was so annoying! I kinda feel bad for McKenna Grace, she's a great actress too! But her character... 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
My favourite character in the movie? Obviously... Ray Stantz, of course! The movie had another 'vibe', so to speak, whenever he or Winston was on... it shone!
But yeah, I still prefer Afterlife... it's a much, much better film.
And yeah, I still missed Harold/Egon. Very much so.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Review
Tumblr media
A movie that is fun to watch but begins to fall apart after it's over. It serves the purpose of being an enjoyable time at the theater even if it's not all that memorable. It's definitely the lesser of the four canon films.
It's a fine continuation of Afterlife, even if it doesn't follow through on everything it could. At the very least, it's not just a carbon copy like the second movie was and tells its own story. It lacks the humor, wit, and heart of the earlier entries. Too often it feels like a middling Marvel movie, like it's trying too hard to set up future movies rather than be its own thing.
The biggest problem is there's simply too much going on, so nothing feels really fleshed out. There's too many characters and they don't all come together. The last one had a big cast but it all came together.
There's too much focus on Phoebe. Every other movie was always an ensemble but this one treats her as the central focus. Mckenna Grace tries hard, but she's lacking many of the quirks that made her first appearance endearing, like the stupid dad jokes.
Paul Rudd's Gary is lots of fun as the fanboy getting to live out his dream. Paul and Gary obviously love being part of the legacy. He's also got some nice moments trying to be a father figure.
The other returning characters from Afterlife are sidelined. Callie has no story. Lucky is completely unnecessary. Podcast has a lot of fun moments with Ray but no real story. Trevor has parts of a story that feels like most ended up on the cutting room floor.
The original cast fare better, though Bill Murray is basically an extended cameo. Ray has a great story about getting old and trying to relive the glory days. Winston finally gets time to shine on his own, too bad it's basically being a clone of Nick Fury and ordering everyone around. Janine finally gets to suit up. Walter Peck is a nice reintroduction even if it's just the same thing over again. Slimer has a few fun moments, but considering how much the creators cited the animated series as inspiration he should have done more.
The new characters are all pretty useless. There's some new tech guy whose name isn't worth remembering who kinda looks like Egon and disappears most of the time. Patton Oswalt provides a bunch of exposition that used to be handled by Ray and Egon. Kumail Nanjiani is a walking MacGuffin, the last in a line of ancient ghostbusters who doesn't really provide anything interesting. Melody is just confusing, the first talking ghost and apparent love interest to Phoebe for some unnecessary reason.
The villain is a bit of a mixed bag. There's a lot of great build up hinting at what kind of horror is to come. But it's a disappointing reveal. Obvious CGI ruin whatever frightening appearance they were going for. And the whole "freezing people by frightening them to death" sounds like a great premise but just results in big icicles forming everywhere. It's kind of sad that the big bad is outshined by the Mini-Pufts.
There are some stuff for the fans. They finally acknowledge the events of the second film. Plenty of Easter eggs and ghostly cameos. The inclusion of real life commercials, promos, and music videos from the first two films is fun.
While not bad, the script definitely could have used a rewrite or two.

I just read all chapters so far of this fic and I'm absolutely obsessed!
I love seeing everything from Holly's perspective and how she sees and remembers everything, especially since she's so far removed from the whole supernatural plot. And I like seeing how she views Mike and Will's relationship.
I also really like your characterization of her. We obviously don't have a lot from canon, especially since she's still so young in it, but I like how you write her.
I think the format of a diary is a really good idea and works so well the way you do it. And I think it's nice getting to see Holly's internal monologue and how she reflects on everything.
Very excited to see how the story unfolds and congrats on writing such good sties so far!!
This ended up being a bit long but I just needed to ramble about how much I liked it because it's so good and you write so well!!
Thank you!! 💖 It means so much to read the positive feedback this story has been getting! I honestly did not expect it to.
I'm getting so fond of Holly as a character. Not gonna lie - this started out as an excuse to further my McKenna Grace as Holly agenda, but it's been so fun shaping her personality. I'm trying to make it a perfect blend between Nancy, Mike, and something completely her own, and in the process I'm just finding out how similar all the Wheelers really are.
Also I love getting to write about my vision for Future!Byler. I know it's not a very popular belief that they'd move back to Hawkins, but whether or not they actually would, I think it's such a lovely concept.

Thess vs IMDB Again
While doing my baking (and baking prep), I watched Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which they're taking off Netflix in a couple of weeks' time. Currently playing "I Know That Voice", because I do that. (Also I miss Harold Ramis, and that is probably the only good way to use CGI to recreate a person, because a ghost is going to look a little uncanny anyway.)
Best one was looking up Ivo Shandor - JK Simmons. Now, I'm not great with names, but yeah, a whoooooooole lotta J Jonah Jameson. However. That wasn't entirely why he was familiar, because I seldom watch ... well, much of anything, and I knew him by voice. So TIL that the voice and face of J Jonah Jameson ... also voiced Ketheric Thorm, and this amuses me no end, and that is why I play the "I Know That Voice" game.
Finn Wolfhard, obviously. Everybody from the original Ghostbusters cast ... well, duh; I'm old enough to actually remember seeing the original at the cinema, if not by much. Didn't realise Ernie Hudson was in The Crow, though I probably should have - I knew that detective guy was familiar. But IMDB didn't exist back then. (Also did VA work in Star Wars: The Bad Batch and a fair bit else, both VA and screen acting, so good on him.) Mckenna Grace I also thought was familiar, and yep - she seems to have so far been making a career of playing younger versions of main characters - young Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, young Emma Swan in Once Upon a Time, young Theo in The Haunting of Hill House. Carrie Coon ... I had to look up who the fuck Proxima Midnight was since I kind of tuned out a lot of the MCU stuff, but those of you who watched stuff like Infinity War and Endgame in more than fanvids will probably appreciate the range better than I do (though with that amount of makeup and prosthetics, and the little I remember seeing of her in body language, I appreciate it a LOT). And Paul Rudd, and without looking, I wanna saaaaaaaaaay ... Ant-Man? Yeah, and Night at the Museum, and a whole bunch of the kind of comedy stuff I'm not terribly into. ...Huh. Looked into who voiced the Muncher, and that's Olaf from Frozen (Josh Gad). I mean, I've never actually seen any of the Frozen movies, but I don't think you can be online without having heard him at least once.
Again, this is why I play the "I Know That Voice" game.

This week’s episode of the Handmaid’s tale kajxjdjwndidije I feel so fucking alive! I even read the spoilers but that ending was still even better than I imagined. I haven’t giffed at all this season (like I promised I’m sorry) but you bet your sweet ass I’m giffing this.
Personal highlights:
Super sweet moments between June and Luke!! Look I was always team Nick but damn how can you not feel something.
Serena’s face seeing the birthing room, getting hit on by her creepy doctor, being told to go to her room… the face of someone who knows she is totally and unequivocally fucked.
June rolling her eyes at Serena and being like “seriously Serena?” like she’s just a pesky little mosquito that won’t leave her alone.
Serena asking Ezra for the gun giving off huge “just trust me bro” vibes.
This exchange:
Serena: Pray
June: *says beautiful prayer*
Serena: Amen
Serena shoots Ezra instead of June SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER. I can’t figure out if that was her plan all along or if she just felt really compelled by June in the moment. To be determined. I also was expecting her to stand over Ezra and shoot him in the head since he obviously survived her shot to the bullet proof vest, but I guess even she isn’t that brutal.
Serena telling June to GET IN THE DAMN CAR AND DRIVE and June being like WHAT THE FUCK SERENA YOU CRAZY BITCH I’M IN.
Man what a ride!
ETA - how could I forget about Warren Putnam getting what he deserved?!??!! *chef’s kiss* and a phenomenal performance by McKenna Grace.

Do you have any HR with the hero having a profession instead of being nobility?
Yes, def! I love non-noble heroes.
Lisa Kleypas writes a lot of self-made men, with some of the most prominent books I'd recommend (there are other ones, these are just my favorites) including:
Dreaming of You. Derek Craven runs a successful gambling club; he was born in a drainpipe!!! He named himself!!! He lived on the streets, he totally made a success of himself, and now he can't deal with his sense of inadequacy and his dirty, dirty hands sullying Sara (though he will for sure do stuff to her... I mean, if she was wearing a mask and they got started and he realized it was her during... he might as well finish it...)
Secrets of a Summer Night. Simon Hunt is self-made, and he comes off as a super successful industry tycoon. It's hOT. And of course, the conflict of his book is him asking the poor but blueblooded heroine to be his mistress, while she's like "omg he's so COARSE!!!"
Marrying Winterborne. Would recommend reading Cold-Hearted Rake, which does have a noble hero, beforehand for context. Rhys Winterborne is Welsh (!) and owns a department store and he's always like "spend my money babe".
Seduce Me at Sunrise--Kev Merripen is kind of like... a servant for the Hathaways? But he's also grown beyond that. He's most definitely not nobility, and nor is Cam in Meet Me at Midnight (which is also good, but I don't love it quite as much).
Again the Magic--McKenna was a servant for Aline's family, was sent away because of their romance, and made his money abroad
Lorraine Heath has some, which I love:
Between the Devil and Desire. Just re-listened! Jack Dodger was a child thief (the bEST child thief! He's Dodge!) and now owns a gambling club that's super successful.
Midnight Pleasures with a Scoundrel. James Swindler was also a child thief/con artist (a swindler perhaps) and is now an inspector. There's also a novella following this book about their friend, Dr. Graves, who's obviously a doctor and was a graverobber as a child--but I haven't read that one yet.
Her Sins for All Seasons series has 4/6 heroes who were born illegitimate and therefore aren't noble--Beyond Scandal and Desire has Mick, who runs a club, The Scoundrel in Her Bed as a hero who does similarly but is kind of halfhearted about it (and was a horse slaughterer when he was younger), and The Duchess in His Bed has a hero who runs a club for WOMEN!!! There is another self-made hero I've yet to read in Beauty Tames the Beast (I think?).
Elizabeth Hoyt has a lot of heroes who aren't noble:
Scandalous Desires--Mickey O'Connor is an extremely successful river pirate.
Thief of Shadows--Winter runs an orphanage for poor lil babies
Sweetest Scoundrel--Asa is trying to build up a pleasure garden (he's Winter's brother)
Most of Joanna Shupe's Gilded Age heroes are not noble, because American. Special shoutouts to:
The Rogue of Fifth Avenue--the hero is a former thief-turned-lawyer/fixer for a rich man, who falls for his boss's daughter
The Prince of Broadway--Clay Madden runs a casino and begins mentoring his hero (in a revenge plot)
The Devil of Downtown--Jack Devlin is a gangster lol
In the Fifth Avenue Rebels, the first three heroes (basically everyone but Lockwood) are not noble but they do come from money. Shoutout to The Lady Gets Lucky (Kit is rich but demands to be taken seriously by starting a supper club) and The Bride Goes Rogue (Preston is Vague Tycoon Man).
Grace Callaway has:
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets--Cull runs a band of CHILD THIEVES and lives on the criminal/vigilante edges of society
Glory and the Master of Shadows--Wei is a martial arts master who is recovering from some pretty severe trauma, while also handling some dirty dirty deeds on the low.
Sarah MacLean's first two Bareknuckle Bastards books (Brazen and the Beast and Wicked and the Wallflower) have criminal underworld heroes, and Knockout has an inspector hero!
Stacy Reid's A Scoundrel of Her Own has a hero who was born poor but has risen up in society (which is now why he wants to claim his upper class childhood sweetheart as his own muahahahaha--)
Beverly Jenkins's heroes generally are not noble, because she doesn't write about white Brits, but they do often come from money. Galen Vachon in Indigo comes from a wealthy, influential Creole family, and the hero of Forbidden is passing for white, but is actually the biracial son of a plantation owner.
