I see some lyrics online that I don't trust because they have what appears to me to be grammatical nonsense in them, like "er er við aða" and "alltaf þið vaða" and "lágfara dans" (not technically grammatically incorrect, but I have never seen the word "lágfara" before, and when I Google it all I'm getting is the supposed lyrics of this song plus a single news article where it's a translation of "lowrider" as in a modified car, which I don't think makes a lot of sense here). I've done my best to transcribe what I think these parts are, but I could be wrong.

"Ó nei" technically sounds more like "Á nei", but that doesn't make any sense. Jónsi's vowels can be drawn out into entirely different vowels, but this does mean technically an interpretation of the same line that merely involves a different vowel getting shifted would be "á ný" (anew). I could see either one being it.

"Langar á dans" is what I'm hearing for what the other lyrics have as "lágfara dans", which is also a bit weird but could theoretically be it; I think what I'm hearing sounds like "langar að dans", but that would only make sense if it was "langar að dansa", and there's distinctly no a at the end.

Translation notes

These lyrics are quite cryptic, as is often the case with Sigur Rós, and there's a lot of sort of disconnected phrases where it's not entirely clear how they relate to each other, so the translation can only be a bit vague.

The "you" in the song appears to be masculine: "Ég sé þig nakinn" only makes sense that way, unless it was actually "Ég sé þig, nakinn", as in I see you while I am naked. I doubt that's it, though.

"Vitleysingur" can mean a madman or just an idiot; madman feels more in line with the song so I went with that, but it could be either.

Tysdag 1. november

Byrja dagen med ein runde til Kumamoto slott. Slottet skal vere eit av dei mest imponerande i Japan, men diverre vart det skada under eit jordskjelv i 2016. Det verkar som det framleis ikkje er opna, for me fann ingen veg inn. Det fekk bli med bileta me tok på avstand. Deretter kom me oss på ferja vestover til Shimabara der me kom fram i 12-tida.

Me køyrde nesten direkte opp på fjellet frå ferjekaia, der me kom oss inn på ein fjellveg med bra utsikt over vulkanen Unzen. Det seinaste store utbrotet var i 1990, og det var lett å sjå for seg korleis det var ei fare for Shimabara som ligg på flata nedanfor. Etter litt meir køyring på fjellvegar tok me turen nordover.

Neste stopp var Yūtoku Inari Shrine. Eit av dei meir kjende shrina dedikert til Inari, og heile fjellsida var dekt av spreidde raudoransje tori-portar. Gjekk heile vegen til toppen. Kvelden brukte me i Nagasaki, der me blir verande til torsdag.

For å kunne fungere i det medialiserte samfunnet må ein vere digitalt kompetent, i ein eller annan grad. Men kva er digital kompetanse?

Digital kompetanse er fleire ting, so lat oss byrje med det mest openberre: å kunne bruke digitale einingar og program. Ein essensiell del av digital kompetanse er å kunne slå på ei datamaskin, logge på (og ikkje gløyme passordet til neste gong), opne programmet ein skal nytte, og klare å orientere seg i den digitale jungelen. Kva som skjer viss du trykkjer der, korleis du får opna ein ny fane, kor du finn overføringsfunksjonen i nettbanken, kor nettlesaren er, og ikkje minst kva som er forskjellen på dine personlege notatar og postar på Facebook. Det tek oss eigentleg over til den andre delen av digital kompetanse - korleis ein oppfører seg på digitale plattformer.

For er det noko vi alle har sett, og kanskje til og med humra i skjegget over, so er det Facebook-innlegg som kanskje ikkje var heilt passande, og kanskje ikkje ein gong skulle sett dagens ljos. Å vite kva som sømmer seg og ikkje er eit aspekt av digital kompetanse. Å vere klar over at viss ein berre skriv "ok" etterfulgt av eit punktum i ein chat kan det verke passiv-aggressivt, eller at aubergine-emojien ikkje på nokon måte handlar om frukt er ogso digital kompetanse. Det er ikkje essensielt for å kunne dra nytte av dei digitale verktøya, men det er ein fordel. Viss du postar rare ting på Facebook kvar dag, ser barnebarna dine dei rare postane dine oftare enn dei ser deg, og dei vert med å skape eit bilete av kven du er. Ein må skjøne normene, kva som er innafor å publisere og ikkje, og vite kva publikum ein snakkar til.

I am not sure how much everyone reading knows about 80s/90s sound chips so in short:

The OPL series are budget Yamaha soundchips first introduced in 1984. They do 2-operator FM synthesis, and are particularly notable for their usage in sound cards for IBM PC compatibles such as AdLib cards and of course, the Soundblaster

The OPN series is-- less well-documented in English but these do 4-operator FM synthesis. The original OPN chip was used in a lot of arcade cabinets, and the PC-9801-26k. The OPNA chip was used in the 9801-86. (Then you have the OPNB which was used in the Neo Geo, the Taito Z System, and more arcade cabinets. And finally, the OPN2 which was used for the FM Towns and the Mega Drive and ay, there's a technical writeup on it here!)

Daði Freyr - Hvað með það? (So What?/Is This Love?) - translation

Another old buried translation request. "Hvað með það?" was Daði's entry for Söngvakeppnin 2017. In the final it was performed in English, as "Is This Love?", and unlike with the throwaway Icelandic lyrics for "Think About Things", that official translation is simply a translation of the song. However, there are a few little differences, so here's the original Icelandic lyrics with a closer translation.

Translation notes

"Eigum við að kíkja heim?" more directly translates to "Should we go home?", but I feel like using "home" here in English just makes it sound like "you" are talking about both of them going to their own homes, whereas the implication here is it's an invitation to their home.

(The "you" in the song has no gender indicators; I see it interpreted to be about Árný, though I'm not sure that fits with how I understand how they met, but grammatically, as far as the lyrics are concerned, they could be any gender.)

I do like the Icelandic version of this song better than the English version - in part because I just like Icelandic, but also because there's just a slight difference in tone here. The official English version is titled "Is This Love?", and that's the repeated lyric at the end of the chorus, but it strikes me as just a little more typical and romanticized than the original, slightly bolder but awkward "I know we only just met, but so what?" I also prefer "But still somehow I know this is fate" over "And somehow I know that soon I'm gonna make you mine", which sounds a bit more suave and confident about the narrator's own ability to ensure they will get together. All in all it feels to me like the Icelandic version just has a little bit more of that super awkward head-over-heels sincerity feel that I find really charming about the song. Otherwise the official translation really is very similar, though!

Ekonomski razvoj dalmatinskih gradova u 12. st., praćen obnovom cjelokupnog urbanog života, odrazio se u gradnji velikih katedrala i samostanskih crkava. Najčešće osnova im je bazilikalni tlocrt. Trobrodna unutrašnjost katedrale sv. Stošije u Zadru oblikovana je glatkim plohama na mjestima gdje je zid opna koja omeđuje unutrašnji prostor i oblikuje vanjski volumen, tj. u apsidi, bočnim perimetralnim zidovima, zidu srednjeg broda od završetka pobočnih brodova naviše. Na mjestima gdje je zid, zbog spajanja unutrašnjih prostora, sveden na stupove i stubove, oblikovanje je izvršeno različitimm prostornim oblicima, arkadama u prizemlju i galerijom iznad bočnih brodova. Gornji zatvarač ostavlja vidljivim konstruktivni sklop drvenih razupirača i nosača. Sve te raznorodne arhitektonske elemente spaja zajedničko usmjerenje prema jednoj točki - oltaru.
