McTominay's malaise

He loves a good knee slide does our Scott, but his time at United feels like it should have ended in the summer, and is now dragging his reputation down from loyal servant to jaded employee.

McTominay has always been a grafter midfielder, and his performances for Scotland in Euro qualifying have seen him notch up six goals to date. A good return and some important performances.

International football is a completely different beast though, and playing for Manchester United - one of the biggest clubs in the world - is a pressure unlike any other. We expect. Scotland does not.

McTominay is known for his strength, stamina, and having decent skills when it comes to dribbling and shooting (2 goals vs Leeds ahhh) but his big weakness is possession. Scott is awful for receiving the ball, positioning, and his vision to open a game up. Keeping it short and simple is his bread and butter and that's fine - if he's a ball-winning mid or the DM sweeper type. He's not.

There's a reason the slow, ageing, heart-risk Eriksen is favoured to start versus Bayern over Scott McTominay: you can't just rely on energy and passion to win a game. It helps, but it should be innate in all players.

That brings us to another question: is that hard work and determination coming from Scott at the moment?

Ole Gunnar Solskjær said in a recent interview with The Athletic that several players had (to paraphrase) downed tools because they wanted to leave United. The feeling based purely on the eye test is that McTominay is now in that phase. His heart doesn't seem in it, and that's exposing the weaker side of his gameplay.

I have no ill will towards McTominay, especially when he was one of the few to be arsed and put in a shift in the really bad days - like De Gea's heroics - but I think it's best if he moved on. Perhaps he was promised that in the summer and then we didn't accept a bid, perhaps he was meant to go before Fred, who knows. I just hope this is a bit of bad form and he can step up his game because at the rate he's going he'll alienate a lot of fans and ruin the reputation he's quietly built up over the past few years. That'd be a real shame.

Solskjær Speaks

Well now. Ole Gunnar Solskjær has spoken in an interview for the first time since departing the club in November 2021.

Speaking to The Athletic, Ole spoke about the hindsight of signing Cristiano Ronaldo being a mistake, players having poor attitudes and too great a self-worth, and the frustration of missing out on requested player signings.

For the sake of not just ripping off The Athletic's article, I'll paraphrase and summarise the key bits below.

On Ronaldo: "It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong."

The aftermath to this was that when the going was good it was all harmonious behind the scenes, but when it wasn't then the egos came out and the comradery faded. Poor showing, but something we're perhaps seeing again under Erik Ten Hag...

On the players' performances: Some players felt they should’ve played more and weren’t constructive to the environment. That’s a huge sin for me. When I didn’t start games I wanted to prove to the manager he’d made the wrong decision.

Solskjær here points to agents and family members (and perhaps social media) overinflating a player's sense of self worth, value, and ability, and that leading to a lack of humility and patience.

On potential signings: "Back then, Wayne and Cristiano were the best young players and we signed them. Now, United can’t just go and buy Evan Ferguson. We couldn’t buy the players I mentioned to the club."

Ole goes on to point out the obvious ones: Haaland, who he recommended from Molde to United before he took over for a meagre €4m. A similar fee was proposed for Caicedo before Brighton (£4.5m) and other players such as Rice, Bellingham, and the slightly more expensive Harry Kane.

The good news for OGS fans is that the Norwegian says he is ready to return to management, having been coaching his children with their teams in Norway of late. Ole confirmed he had received two offers from Saudi, but would be open to a return to England and either the Premier League or the Championship, though maybe a European move might be a more interesting challenge.

Whatever he does, we wish Ole the best in the future.
