I can't believe Othar's Twitter-Story-Geister-Wife ended up having regular canon relevancy at all, let alone AFTER twitter began generally disintegrating

OK, going through the GG posts on your blog, one of them mentioned you had a thing about othar/anevka, can we hear more about that?
I have some truly insane feelings about this crackship, it's A Lot.
They do not meet in canon. To the best of my knowledge, they've never even been in the same city in canon. I don't even have the ship happening while she's still alive, for pity's sake, but...
This ship started out as a joke. We were talking about a GG/Danny Phantom crossover on discord and I threw in fake-married Otharnevka (him gay, her a dead robot lady), where the ongoing joke was their fake relationship being goals for everyone, because she'd like... ask him to help her reach a high shelf, and instead of just grabbing the thing for her, he'd lift her up onto his shoulder to do it herself, and bow to kiss her hand, that sort of thing.
Except canon Othar isn't gay (the twitter story is canon enough that we can assume he likes women), so the next time it came up, it was less of a joke. And just. I kept getting invested?
He is a hero! She needed a hero, but never got one. She is the mad scientist's beautiful daughter, but she's the mad scientist herself too, except she's not a spark anymore, but she's still a sadist. He thinks he can help her be not-evil. She thinks she can corrupt him. He dotes on her and is an absolute gentleman without ever actually underestimating or coddling her. She's so ready to kill, and he might be a hero but he's fucking unhinged so it's not like always stops her! He's strong enough to carry and lift her 900kg body and make it look easy. He's ready and willing to stand around looking pretty while she politics, and she takes pleasure in pretending to be a damsel for him to save, especially if it ends with his shirt ripped up.
Othar: I can fix her! Anevka, in a condescending voice: Don't you want to help me kill this awful, evil spark? Othar: ...well, maybe a little murder. (Tarvek, who does not want to be here: This is not how you fix a person. I should know, Agatha fixed me.)
He's annoying, but she doesn't have to be around him when he's annoying. She's pretty well-made to just tune him out, even, and even that is rare; it's so much more fun to pat him on the arm and say 'that's nice, dear' when he's having a Heroic Monologue Moment, and then swan off to poison someone while he tries to recruit himself a new sidekick.
I just. They give me dopamine. They're awful, but not actually The Worst by GG standards. Even Anevka's mostly just Traumatically Dramatic and could probably be aimed at problems once she's got a bit of distance from the Aaronev situation.
Here, have a few Otharnevka posts:

The Boys are Back!!
Tumblr media
and if you want to read the Othar Twitter, fear not, it's archived on the GG site under Fun Extras
edit: I was mistaken, Eotain is not his Alternate Universe Wife, her name was Oslaka, and apparently Othar found Eotain while unsuccessfully searching for her (given that his sanity in the other world is a bit suspect, and that even there she was killed and revived by the master of paris for information- the likely hood of her appearance remains slim) (I'm sad)

magicalspacedragon:
out of curiosity are u aware that canon is a peggy sue for othar and has been since the castle arc
i am, yes!!! i’m not sure if it would play into things here bc i don’t remember how his personal timeline lines up with the comic? like, i know he spends 36 years with oslaka and then gets dropped back into things before he ever met her, right before the castle arc, and he first met her later than that? but while simon voltaire was still master of paris, but also idk if the timestop happened/what actually went down differently in his original timeline—do we even know how/when gil died? or what happened to agatha? so i do need to reread that whole section of his twitter, but i’m getting off track here bc my original point was, my impression is that that all goes down for him offscreen alongside canon, and wouldn’t affect the ot3′s interactions with him in a paris era canon divergent au? i think?

a quick survey of my tumblr drafts folder, for the hell of it:
Girl Genius: 5 Items
timeline for A Family Reconstructed, which I’m almost certainly never going to finish, and some ideas for a sequel, which I’m DEFINITELY never going to write
the lists of Girl Genius: The Musical, Part 1 and Part 2, and Part 3 WIP and ongoing [enough plot has probably happened for me to finalize Part 3...]
the first several of paragraphs of the hypothetical mythological retelling of a hypothetical Girl Genius Sburb session, including a list of classpects I’d decided upon for all relevant characters
an attempt at a plausible timeline for events in Othar’s Twitter Darkest Timeline
copy from a chat with @constancecomment of a modern au in which college-age Agatha, Gil, and Tarvek invent real AIs - well, Agatha does all the coding, and Gil builds their robot bodies for their new computer children, and Tarvek meant to be a politician but ends up being the leading activist for AI rights. Together, the three of them are parents to a whole new species. I tried twice to turn this into a non-fanfiction story, and both times gave up when the projected length just kept getting longer
Critical Role: 2 Items
ideas for the pretentious Latin tag for Matt-as-the-DM(-as-divine)
half a bit more of that CR/LotR AU
Other: 6 Items
half-written Chrestomanci headcanon about Cat adopting more and more animals, not to mention faerie creatures, that I possibly meant to turn into a fic? But now I have no idea what else there was to it
3 bullet points on quotes from Enlightenment philosopher Denis Diderot that made me think of potential meta-analysis of fanfiction, the internal logic of which I no longer understand
the first three paragraphs of an essay I’d titled “The Sea is Not Wild, or, An Idle Comparative Meta on Historical Adventure Genres, and How To Be Less Racist While Maintaining Key Elements of the Narrative”, in which I’d started comparing American Old West adventures (ie, anything John Wayne) with Pirates on the High Seas adventures (ie, Pirates of the Caribbean). Iirc I stopped because a) I realized that the difference was, I’m pretty sure, how positively or not they viewed the Wilderness (vs Civilization), and also I had to go to class. [I’d still be pretty down to write this tbh. It’d be neat. Could compare character journeys of, say, Elizabeth in PotC with whatshisface protagonist in The Searchers]
information for renewing my Clipper card, when I needed somewhere to write it down
half-rewritten Ozymandias poem to be about obsolete gaming consoles, because @professorsparklepants (yes, I’m calling you out) added the original poem to a post about that but she didn’t rewrite it to be more fitting, which, why even bother then? Weak.
the first 8 lines of an attempt to rewrite the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air song to describe how the revocation of the Glass-Steagull Act led to the Great Recession of 2008

Big Gay Nerds Masterpost
The idea for Big Gay Nerds was born on a long bus ride. I was listening to a new podcast about some funny brothers playing D&D, and I thought, “My friends and I could do something like this. It would be a great excuse to play with them and really make something out of my favorite hobby. But there are probably hundreds of podcasts like that; what would set us apart?” Then I remembered that a lot of my tabletop-playing friends were also queer, and the phrase “LGBT RPG” manifested in my head. It would be at least a year until I worked up the confidence to actually organize anything, but the seed was planted, and now the delicious idea-fruit is YOURS to enjoy!
Tumblr media
BGN is an actual play podcast starring Owen (myself), Levi (my boyfriend), Saturn, Sara, and Ian (sometimes called Othar or Oats). Our sessions tend to lean towards the casual side, mixing character-driven roleplaying with the kind of tangential banter you would expect from a bunch of friends. We also try to give a good overview of the game’s mechanics so that listeners can decide if they want to play too. Rather than focusing on a single system, we experiment with multiple games and take turns running them, though we already have one reoccurring campaign and plan to add more.
The individual games can be found here:
Monsterhearts
Our first and most enduring game, Monsterhearts is a Powered-by-the-Apocalypse system about supernatural horror and romance in the vein of Twilight and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s also VERY gay, which is why I picked it. Our campaign is set at Mater Dolorosa College, a Catholic school with some decidedly less-than-pious students.
Ring of Fire
Ian makes his first appearance running this homebrew, using the versatile Lady Blackbird system to depict his original world that combines the Old West with Feudal Japan. The adventure starts in medias res, as most of the party had played it before, but it’s easy to jump into the katana-wielding, train-robbing roguery.
Dungeons & Dragons
We couldn’t stay indie forever; the siren song of Fifth Edition drew us back to the bread and butter of RPGs. With Levi at the helm, a ragtag band of heroes-for-hire crawl through some dungeons, slay some monsters, and run off with all the gold their grubby mitts can carry, just like Gygax intended.
World Wide Wrestling
Another PbtA game, featuring Levi as “Creative” and our friend James in what is hopefully the first of many appearances. WWW is clearly written by a pro-wrestling devotee, dedicated to the in-ring and backstage lives of the performers, but its unique mechanics make it a hit even among non-fans. Plus, we get pretty wacky with the character concepts.
Blades in the Dark
We went in expecting more PbtA, but Blades in the Dark is very much its own beast, despite drawing heavily from video games like Dishonored and Thief. Saturn’s running, and everyone else plays ragtag criminals who call themselves the Resurrectionists and get in way over their heads on wild heists.
Pigsmoke
We’re joined by Pixie, our second guest star, to play what is essentially Monsterhearts in reverse: our PCs are professors at a wizard college who have to educate a new generation of spellcasters. More importantly, they have to deal with their own petty ambitions, rivalries, and vices. Pigsmoke is the first true comedy RPG I’ve played, and I think it deserves more attention.
Spell
In a big BGN landmark, we were actually approached by a game designer to preview Spell: the RPG while it was still being Kickstarted! In a truly unique system, we must use random letter tokens to spell out the magical effects you want to cause, resulting in unexpected and often hilarious outcomes.
One-Shots
While long campaigns can be fun, it can also be fun to have bite-sized adventures that are last about as long as a movie. We haven’t done many of these yet--and for some reason they’re all science fiction themed for now--but you can expect more in the future.
Our episodes are hosted on Soundcloud and iTunes, and we have accounts on Facebook and Twitter, though right now this Tumblr is probably the best place to find extra content like art, character sheets, and whatever treasures our fans produce. If you like Big Gay Nerds and want more people to know about it, rate and review us on iTunes, tweet using the hashtag #biggaynerds, or reblog this post!
If you want to support us more directly, we have a Patreon that we use to fund our Soundcloud account and frequent rulebook purchases. Patrons who donate $3 or more receive special BGN stickers, and $5 will also get you a mention in our frequent post-recording shoutouts!
We’re eternally grateful for all of the support we’ve seen so far, and we promise that there’s a lot more material on the way, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open!

GG fandom ask meme: 1, 9, 16, 22, 23
(Ask meme!)
1. How/when did you first find the comic?
Okay. Okay. So, I used to spend a lot of time onTvTropes. I still like it - it’s a fun place to waste time and a useful tool for analyzing fiction - but I’m talking like a single, years-long wiki walkthat never quite ended. TvTropes was slightly responsible for me trying outHomestuck, completely responsible for me finding El GoonishShive, and so on.
And it introduced me to Girl Genius.
…Not really in an ideal way.
So, this is the page image for the article Showing Off TheNew Body:
Tumblr media
Objectively, this is not a very good first panel of Girl Genius to seeever. The coloring in this arc is entirely heavily airbrushed jeweltones. Lucrezia has a Looney Tune eye but only from one angle, Tarvek looks likea brick, and the exaggerated pose is an inch away from qualifying for amention on Escher Girls. It’s supposed to be uncomfortable in context, butout of it? Yikes.
Anyway, the description below the image links to Lucrezia’s big entrancein the page’s entry for GG, and I was kind of darkly fascinated. I wanted toknow what the actual hell was going on. So I clicked the link, and opened it in a newtab. I expected to skim the page very briefly to orient myself, then go back tobrowsing with my interest sated.
The trouble was that the page did not explain what wasgoing on. Neither did the next handful after that. They were, in fact, even more confusing. More eye-assaulting jewel tones and women of odd proportions and features in unfortunateexaggerated positions.
Tumblr media
This pose is completely physically possible AND YET.
I’ve really come to appreciate Phil’s art, but myfirst impression was of this parade of oddly-modeledaliens.
I skimmed through dozens of pages growing increasingly baffled and frustrated, asquickly as I could get the images to load. For ambiance, I think the background at thetime was cute cartoon airships on turquoise.
When the comic cut to the B story (the Rescue Party), Ididn’t read the pages at all, clicking through them with a vengeance as Ibecame more engaged in the sunk cost fallacy-fueled quest to figure out whatwas going on with all the weird-looking women in the part of the plot withgoddesses and ladies and priestesses. I was already primed to ignore the Party because right after the page I was linked to the story cuts away to them for only two pages before getting back to the Lu scene.
Eventually, I hit a draft of pages about the Rescue Party so dense that I actually slowed down quite a few deep and read some of them. This represented a turning point. Because the Rescue Party B story? Is hilarious.
Tumblr media
Every single thing this group of characters does in thatsection is pure gold. It’s stuffed with examples of brilliant comedic timing mingled with snappy action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And unlike the continuity-heavy plot surroundingLucrezia’s entrance, all its strongest beats work fine with absolutely no context. Which is what Ihad. This is still true if you start it halfway through, I can attest, frompersonal experience.
Tumblr media
This entire page murdered me. I’ve been dead for years.
So that’s how I got linked to the end of Volume 5 and transitioned to reading with rapt attention in the middle of Volume 6, determined not to miss another joke. I’m not sure how far I got. Pretty far. I might havefinished the volume before I decided I wanted to take the long way to not beinglost and started over at the very beginning. I definitely got past “Backto Castle Wulfenbach! Woohoo!” so keep in mind that this long-awaitedreturn was my first exposure to Gil and Castle Wulfenbach when I say thatsomebody should really ask me #11 (first impression of a character) for him.
9. Something you’d love to see happen in canon at some point? (Independent from it’s likeliness to happen)
Bring back Zulenna.
Bring back Moxana.
Bring back Tinka.
BRING BACK ANEVKA.
16. Have you read any of the bonus stories (Radio plays, short story breaks, Othar’s Twitter, etc)?
I’ve read everything in the online archives (é͞ve͠r̷̕̕y̸tḩ̶í̸̛ǹ̛͡g͜) and nothing exclusive to print. I’m fuzzier on the two breaks with guest art and the actual convention-based audio recordings of radio plays, which are a bit too rough too briefly to really hold my attention. Which is a shame because the creators are magnitudes better at writing for radio than the quality of the audio available would lead you to believe. Othar’s Twitter is a trip, and also a really nice example of that format of storytelling, if you ask me. It got abandoned, sure, but we’ll always have (rendezvous in the sewers of) Paris, yeah?
All the bonuses are great but my absolute favorite is the Cinderella Christmas thing. (Nobody needs me to link to that, I just think it’s like. Enriching. To reread.) I will…never understand how the studio crew considered writing and drawing that a vacation. Honorable mention goes to the Opera Synopsis.
22. “Fools! I will show you all! (ask me how!)” This is me asking you how.
The world is very lucky that I would, realistically, probably leave a lot of half-finished doomsday devices lying all over the place. Ugh, I’m having a grisly flash-sideways of my alternate universe mother asking me, “So have you gotten any work done lately on that project with saving the environment with the bioengineered barnacles? I loved that one!” and me going “UGH, I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.”
I’M WAITING FOR MY MUSE TO GALVANIZE ME, MOM. I’M TOYING WITH SOME NEW PASSIONS RIGHT NOW MOM.
23. Where in that crazy world would you prefer to live? Paris? Wulfenbach territory? England? A miscellaneous tyrant’s town? Under the Storm King’s/Fifty Families’ rule? Skifander?
Paris sounded awesome before the story actually went there, and now that it has? It’s clearly even more awesome. Heroing and villainy as a club activity! A massive, ancient library with secret rooms where “Catmaster” is an official position with the motto “To read what you want, you have to be free”! I WANT TO GO TO THERE.
